If you haven't played the Trails series and are planning on jumping on with Trails in the Sky Remake, be wary of spoilers in the video. Also, this looks great and I can't wait!
I just watched the movie for the first time a couple weeks ago, and I was quite shocked Grant didn't get his due credit. Stupid excuse not to give it to him. He's one of the best ever at his craft.
Two of my favorite RPGs, and games of all time for me here. I'll gladly replay them on Switch, even though I still have the big box versions on PS1. Sample my goods!
Ys The Oath in Felghana is probably the best Ys game and a great starting point for those who want to get into the series or just test the water. As long as you don't take a boat out into said water.
Interesting, so it has the Daybreak battle system and art style it appears. I'd like to see the original games ported in the old art style, with the improvements Zero/Azure got. It does look like I'll be playing Sky for a 3rd time, and it's great people who don't play on PC or PSP/Vita finally get a chance to experience this amazing story.
I'd take a prequel to where you play as Ouroboros. Or back even further to the War of the Lions (not related to FF Tactics lol) where you play as Prince Dreichels, Lianne Sandlot and Roland Vander. Or a new IP would be fine too. I guess I just trust Falcom to deliver the goods.
@Joshie0234 I believe this is the first Switch game developed by Falcom themselves. The older Switch ports, like Ys 8,9, Cold Steel 3 and 4 were by NISA, so this one should run better. That being said, I'm getting it on PS5 myself lol.
@OorWullie Gameplay wise they're very similar, and I'd give Felghana and slight edge because: A. You don't have to beat the game 3 times to get the full story B. It's not as overly punishing if you miss a treasure chest as it is in Origin. I mean, if you miss a single piece of Cleria Ore, you're screwed against the next boss. Both awesome games, though.
Nice write-up! It's much easier to sell new people on a long-running series with an ongoing story with, "Just buy the newest game." And it seems like this is the case with Daybreak. That being said, having played the previous 10 games myself, I was quite excited to see a few familiar faces in the opening cinematic. This is my most anticipated game right now.
I've had the same rotation of games for the last few weeks. On Switch I'm playing Unicorn Overlord, about 40 hours in. On PS5 FF7 Rebirth, about to go to Cosmo Canyon. And on Steam I'm replaying Trails in the Sky the 3rd, on the final chapter.
I am caught up! Well, at least as caught up with the series as a non-Japanese speaker can be at least. Can't wait to finally explore the Calvard Republic! I love this series like Tio-Tot loves Mishy.
@ScalenePowers If you only have a Switch, start with Trails from Zero and then its direct sequel, Trails to Azure. Then pray the other games (Trails in the Sky trilogy and Cold Steel 1+2) get ported to Switch.
@Rudolf Ok cool, didn't know that. I figured he was always Dogi in Japan, and someone went rogue and called him Colin in the west. And there was an anime based on Ys 1+2 and they referred to Reah as "Leah" there, so it must have been similar to Crashman/Clashman there. Localizers didn't quite know what to do with that name.
Lloyd Bannings from Trails to Azure/Reverie is my #1. Followed by Garl, and great shout on Partitio, he deserves to be on the list for the saxophone in his theme song alone.
@Beefcakeyamato Yes, great shout out for Shining the Holy Ark. I have great memories of that game in the Summer of '97, before Final Fantasy VII took over the world a few months later. The battle music from StHA still pops in my head from time to time, even though I haven't played it in about 25 years.
I voted for Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia, and Virtua Cop. It wasn't on the list, but I'd love to see a new Shining Force, or a remaster of SF3 all 3 scenarios, as only part one ever got a proper English release. RIP Saturn.
@Tyranexx Others have already left a similar comment, but I'll be a +1 on Mother 3. The game is a masterpiece and the fan translation is as good as most official translations. I played it on a GBA repro cart.
It's a red flag if a publisher chooses not to send out review codes for one specific platform. Remember how bad Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was on Switch compared to the other versions? Looks like history repeating itself here.
@EarthboundBenjy I've played all 10 Trails games available in English, a bit out of order though. I played Cold Steel 1-3, then Sky 1-3, CS4, Zero, Azure, Reverie. It sounds like you're in a position to start with Sky and play the series in order, I'd totally recommend you do it like that.
Really looking forward to this, as I've completed all 10 English mainline Trails games, and I'm working on a replay of the Cold Steel arc right now (I'm on chapter 2 of ToCS2.) As for the imprecise platforming, unfortunately that's just par for the course for a PSP era Falcom game. It can't be any worse than the dash jumping mechanic from Ys 6 or the clocktower climb from Oath in Felghana... can it?
