Balan Wonderworld is a strange game. Mascot platformers were all the rage around the turn of the century, but that fad has long since died off. Yet here comes a brand-new seemingly high budget entry in the genre that feels straight out of 2001 (not in a good way) and it’s produced by Square Enix no less. Unfortunately, Balan Wonderworld feels like a period piece in many respects... only it’s a new release and not a relic of two decades ago. Stiff controls, uninteresting level design, and many other issues all come together to make for a game that simply fails to properly achieve what it sets out to do.
The story starts off with you selecting either a boy or girl character, followed by a short (though well animated) cutscene which thoroughly fails to explain any of the events which follow. The children are both unhappy(?) and as they wander the streets of their city, they happen across a mysterious entrance to a place called Wonderworld in a back alley. Upon crossing the threshold, they’re quickly accosted by a grinning and vaguely menacing showman figure named Balan who whisks them away to a fantasy land to presumably do something good for other people.
Honestly, we’re not entirely sure what the narrative is here, as Balan Wonderworld refuses to explain what’s going on. Is your character dreaming? Are they dead? Is all this a hallucinogenic trip they’re experiencing in that alley? Each of the worlds is oriented around an NPC character with their own tragic backstory, and it seems like you’re somehow helping them out by collecting things, but it’s never made clear how or what you’re really doing.
For example, one of the first worlds is about a scuba diver who enjoys swimming with her dolphin friend. Then the dolphin turns on her and tries to kill her by removing her air tank. The girl is hospitalized as a result. But, after the boss fight at the end of her world, she goes back to the ocean and finds that the dolphin is back to its old self, and she joyously swims with it again. The player’s actions obviously had a hand in this redemption, but what actually happened is never explained. Why did the dolphin go bad? How did collecting trinkets and beating a boss character fix things? Will the dolphin’s urge to kill come back again?
All of this is to say, Balan Wonderworld does an absolutely awful job of telling its story. Platformers are, of course, not known for their complex narratives, but even given the low bar set by other games in the genre, this comes up short. It fails to grant you even a simple, coherent explanation for why you’re collecting items and exploring this strange world. Unfortunately, problems with storytelling are only the tip of the iceberg of issues responsible for sinking Balan Wonderworld.
Gameplay unfolds in a standard collectathon 3D platformer fashion; each world consists of two levels with a smattering of things for you to pick up and then it’s finished with a simple boss fight after the second level. Your objective for each level is to simply reach the end and pick up a fancy-looking heart trinket, but along the way there are also eight golden Balan statues to pick up which are this game's equivalent of Stars or Jiggies. Pick up enough of them, and you’ll unlock more levels. Between all of these, there are also ‘Drops’ to pick up, which sort of function as Balan Wonderworld’s version of coins. So far, so similar, but the wheels start coming off almost as soon as this train gets going.
Moment to moment gameplay is mostly built around the 80(!) suits you can pick up along the way, each of which have exactly one function. The spider suit lets you climb spider webs. The dolphin suit lets you swim through water. The wolf suit lets you do a spin-jump. In a better game, having this diversity of ideas could likely lead to some fascinating gameplay, but Balan Wonderworld somehow finds a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
See, the issue with the suit system is that it’s a mile wide and an inch deep. Having all these suits is one thing, but having interesting levels that take advantage of their abilities is quite another. Balan Wonderworld never finds many ways to go beyond the absolute most basic obstacles possible for these suits, which means gameplay gets dull quickly.
Moreover, many of the suits can’t justify their own existence. For example, one from the dolphin girl’s world allows you to swim through floating tubes of water. Five minutes after finding it, you find another suit which allows you to do the exact same thing, but with the added ability to jump out of the water tube whenever you please. As a result, this second suit completely invalidates the utility of the first, making it worthless. The developers could’ve probably cut half of these suits out of the game and lost virtually nothing in the process, which speaks to their overall value in the larger game design. Great games take interesting ideas and explore them from a variety of angles — Balan Wonderworld is a game which just shotguns weak ideas at a wall and hopes some of them stick.
On top of this, Balan Wonderworld simply isn’t fun to play moment-to-moment; by this, we mean the controls are stiff and unintuitive. They don’t feel very good. Where Mario joyously leaps and bounds his way through environments, the characters here feel like they jump more out of a sense of begrudging obligation. A lot of this is down to the animation quality, which is just terrible. Even the basic walk animation looks goofy and stilted, as if they’re trying to act like they’re walking rather than just doing it, and this stiffness affects virtually every aspect of the gameplay. There is no point in this adventure where the controls suddenly click — no point where they feel smooth and natural.
The control issue would be damning enough on its own, but it’s further compounded by the shoddy level design, which could best be described as confused. For example, the first time we found a golden hat in a level, Balan suddenly appeared and offered to ‘share his power’. We were then ripped out of the level and forced to engage in a fever dream sequence where he punched rocks in a featureless void while we did quick-time events. Upon completing the last one, we were given a statue and dumped back into the level as though nothing happened.
When you’re not getting roped into non sequitur sequences like this, the basic levels themselves are nothing to write home about. There’s not much reliance on challenging player skills here, as hazards are painfully easy to negotiate. Enemies show up every now and then in scripted fights, but they put up almost no resistance and can be mostly ignored. The main ‘challenge’ comes from scouring levels for Balan statues, yet these are almost always hidden behind simple and obviously overcome obstacles that require a specific suit to reach.
It’s this focus on simplicity that really deals the damning blow to Balan Wonderworld. There’s nothing wrong with setting up different hurdles in levels for each suit’s abilities, but Balan Wonderworld fails to go beyond scratching the surface with the creativity of these obstacles, a creative failure that extends to the control scheme limited by one button. All the face buttons and both the triggers do the exact same thing, which for most suits is some version of a jump — in some cases, it might be a basic attack instead, but it can’t be both. The result? Wearing an attack-focused suit literally means you can’t jump anymore. There’s no reason for a limitation like this to exist and it only makes an already frustrating game that much more baffling. What were they thinking?
Worse yet, the few things that Balan Wonderworld really needs to explain to you don’t get properly introduced to the player. For example, the hub world is overrun by these colorful chicks called “Tims” that you’re supposed to feed with Drops you pick up in levels. The Tims build a tower in the middle of the hub, but this tower’s importance (if at has any) is never explained or referenced at all. You’re never told outright that you can swap out suits at checkpoints if you hold down the action button, either. For such a simplistic game, it’s honestly amazing that Balan Wonderworld manages to drop the ball in explaining its most basic systems.
To its credit, Balan Wonderworld at least looks decent. The worlds are all nicely detailed and brightly colored, giving you quite a bit to look at as you fuss around with the weird controls. Unfortunately, performance is terrible; the 30FPS cap is very rarely hit, things hover more in the 15-10FPS range. If enemies spawn, or even if you swivel the camera around just a little too quickly, the frame rate tanks and the game chugs considerably. Then there’s the downright weird artistic decisions made, like how NPC characters and creatures will randomly be dancing in lines on various parts of the level. If you approach them, they just vanish into thin air — in that regard, you could say Balan Wonderworld achieves its goal of showing you a dreamlike world, but there’s just not enough here graphically to justify the awful performance.
Conclusion
We’re not going to mince words here, Balan Wonderworld is a waste of your time. Monotonous level design, awful performance, and shallow gameplay combine to make for an experience that is simply not fun to play. It may look pretty (when it’s framerate isn’t chugging), but there simply isn’t enough good content here to justify your time or money, and this is doubly true when you take into account that this is a full-priced retail release. If you’re looking for a good 3D platformer for your Switch, this most definitely isn’t it.

This right here is one of the most disappointing games to me in recent years. The initial trailer showed so much promise. It's a shame, it really is.
IDGAF I’m supporting my man Yuji Naka
So weird that square chose to push this out without delaying and listening to demo feedback.
They have used this demo feedback for a lot of games recently and seems they really missed the mark with this.
@Strictlystyles That's nice
I said it twice and I will say it a 3rd They should have delayed this game. Everyone was telling them to and you know what they said? "Here have a ban-aid to fix up that Whole in your chest". And if you think I'm just a hater I like many people was really hyped for the game, but after the demo that hope and hype died, But maybe if just maybe if this game goes on sale for maybe HMMM 15 bucks (Even thats asking to much) then maybe I will give it a shot.
(And my god there better not be dlc for this game)
Yeah they should’ve delayed the game...honestly restart development entirely or scrapped it.
Shame it looked really interesting.
I think everyone knew this score was coming. Right from the start this has looked nothing but awful. Considering there were no reviews for it at launch despite it being a game from a major publisher, clearly even they know just how bad it is.
I still want to buy it now because it’s a notable failure during the Switch era. Just like I bought Cooking Mama Cookstar game haha
@TheLightSpirit But for some people and alot of people that are probably on a nintendo site Is bc they only have a nintendo switch/switch lite.
Yep, played the demo on Steam... it was really awful. Super slow, the quick time event bonus was really really poor and it was just an absolute faff messing about with the power ups.
I so wanted this to be good.
This is a sad day indeed!
At least the demo showed anyone who cared what crap the game was
For all of the comments about delaying the game, I'm not sure if that would have helped as at it's core it's just a bit rubbish. You can't polish everything.
@Lord Ya I don't get it, What was the point of the demo if you just was going to brush any of the feedback to the side, not to say they didn't do anything what soever, but they didn't fix the main problem people had with the game.
From the demo it seemed to be cobbled together from old Sega mechanics and sound effects but suffering from the old Sonic 3d games flaws of having too many characters (abilities in this case) to work with. Mario 64 and beyond were great because they built upon a few core mechanics to fine tune the gameplay and I feel this could really have benefited from having a much tighter focus in that regard. Even from the limited demo it seemed clear they couldn't go too far with level design as they wouldn't necessarily know what powers you were going to bring with you.
I'm a huge old school Sega fanboy who really enjoys the likes of Bug, Nights Into Dreams and Burning Rangers on the Saturn. Yet this just feels almost like a fan game thats just thrown in various elements from past games without ever understanding what made them fun in the first place
Arzest strikes again. How do they keep getting work?
@mikegamer actually I lm playing game on ps5 and it’s actually.... not that bad. I’m surprised
Let's be honest, we allll saw this coming when the trailers and gameplay footage came out.
@jump Yeah, this one's pretty salvageable. They would have had to scrap it and start it from scratch which is probably too much to ask so I guess they just decided to cut their losses, release it anyway and hope that a few people pick it up before word gets out.
"Balan Wonderworld somehow finds a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" is an excellent turn of phrase
@BenAV I wouldn't have cared if they had to delay it by another two years, as long as it would have been a great game.
@Strictlystyles I had a much better time on the ps4 then the switch thats for sure.
@KateGray
It is indeed. Admittedly it does cause an image of a someone narrowly esaping getting eaten by a shark. Why, I have no idea.
This game looks like pure trash from head to toe.
Having said that if people are getting enjoyment out of it then fair play, one person's trash is another's treasure and all that.
Devil's Third got panned.
I actually thought the single player was about a 7, and the multi was an 8.
Judge for yourself in life.
@KateGray At least we had the demo, just think if we didn't [Add Horror music here]
I said this on Reddit and I'll repeat it here:
3D Sonic only got good once Naka was out of the picture. The Boost games (sans Forces) are no classic trilogy, but they're better than the Adventure era and "dark age" easily.
I knew this game was garbage the instant I saw it first announced. Beyond all of the other problems that cropped up between then and now, the core premise was bland, soulless, and uninteresting. It looks like a project that wants to evoke memories of everything from Alice in Wonderland to 90s and 2000s games like Nights Into Dreams and Psychonauts, but it ends up having no defining identity of its own.
@Peteykins I kinda had that vibe to.
@AtlanteanMan first thing when I booted up the demo I thought the levels was just a water down psychonauts.
@Lord ikr. They did this with Bravely Default 2 and I think they did this with Octopath Traveler and just recently Project Triangle Strategy.
Why didn’t Square listen to the Balan demo feedback
This year really isn’t too great for Square Enix
Looks like Yuji Naka will be making a quick departure from Square... I wish him better luck next time.
Guess I saw this coming after early impression videos.
Only people id expect to not find this game bad are sonic fans, they like this type of quality on their games.
Always a bummer with this guy. Such cool ideas that are rarely, if ever, executed in a way that results in a good video game.
It's so bad that it can apparently make you ill!
Good thing this came out so soon after announcing, otherwise we'd probably have another No Man's Sky or Mighty No. 9 fiasco.
Yikes.
@Ardisan Except this time it doesn't have their waifus and husbandos they cling to.
@SmaggTheSmug @Ardisan Ouch yall cut me deep.
@Noid This is a unpopular opinion I can agree with. Boost formula is also a very unique gameplay style that ive seen no platformer have, and stood Sonic out from other 3d platformers. It has two games that really suck imo but I really enjoyed the boost gameplay in Unleashed and Generations.
Tried the demo and thought what a terrible mess, the trailer was cool but the game is crap.
My very first impression after seeing the trailer was: wtf, how can Square publish such a crap game?
@SmaggTheSmug mighty no. 9 was good. Just overhyped expectations
And here was I thinking the seizures would be the end of the controversy.
I mean, Naka’s done Phantasy Star and Sonic only so I never thought he was Square’s answer to Eiji Aonuma.
How thoroughly disappointing, Yuji Naka is my absolute favourite game designer of all time, I was really hoping this would be a modern equivalent to the excellent Nights, ho-hum.
I can't help but feel that the "What were they thinking?" line was an AVGN reference.
It's really a shame. Yuji Naka made very unique games in the past. But this one's gameplay is so uninspired... It's like NiGHTS as an extremely generic 3D platformer.
Might as well take this opportunity to suggest that people try Poi, a good 3D platformer that had the misfortune of launching at the same time as Super Mario Odyssey, and got completely overlooked as a result. Not sure what the publisher was thinking, to be honest.
Credible review, but I disagree with suggestion that narrative is largely inconsequential for platform games. The best platformers benefit GREATLY from narrative. DK, SMB, and Kirby make all those jumps and dodges feel meaningful because of the universe they're built in.
The suits system here reminds me of swapping blades in XC2 to meet the specific field skill requirements, swap back to the blades I use in battle, ran into another obstacle that requires swapping blades seconds later, and have to swap back to my usual lineup again. Systems that require constant swapping for simple purposes are just so lame.
that score should have been at least an 8/10
Well at least I'll be saving a few bucks for not buying this game.
Odd how the critics and YouTubers love to crap on this game but the Metacritic users seem to enjoy it though. I recently got the game and though it's not my cup of tea my nephew seems to enjoy it so if I had to give it a score it'll be a 8/10 in my book. The one button thing for everything is lame but considering this is coming from the creator of Sonic which itself is a game that use only one button for everything, it make sense.
@Lord demo feedback probably isn’t going to make a really bad game good.. especially with just one round of feedback that is late in the development cycle.
@JimmySpades
I have Poi Explorer Edition Switch version in cartridge, bought from playasia. 😀
Still gonna get it once it goes on sale since my kid really wants it. This might be a rare case that I will opt for the ps4 version since it looks like the switch performance issues from the demo is still the same now. Even the devs themselves admitted that they got carried away prioritizing the next gen version iirc.
@Muddy_4_Ever Hmm, for me, narrative is an excuse to be doing all the running and jumping. Not a reason for it. Get the girl or save the planet is generally enough for me lol.
“Snatch defeat from the jaws of victory” is a phrase my dad has constantly used for years when referring to sports games.
Anyway, it’s a shame that Balan Wonderworld missed the mark in so many ways. I was really hoping for a remarkable experience, but it’s just so basic all around. Too basic for its own good.
The very first trailer gave me an uneasy feeling. It all just felt off and kind of creepy.
I didn't bother with the demo and the trailers made this game look pretty poor and inexplicable. All of the comments about delays seem to ignore that the issues with the game largely aren't technical shortcomings that can be addressed in a timely manner, but more mechanical and design wise. The issues that need to be resolved would likely result in a completely different game.
I'm a longtime Sega fan, but if I am being totally honest, it has been a loooooooooong time since Yuji Naka's name being associated with a game gave me any sort of confidence.
I enjoyed the demo and it had its challenge. I think also they are expecting something that wasn't there. This game was more oriented towards non-adult group and I had no issue playing it. If one is looking from a adult point if view then they missed the boat. This game non of the violent adult genre and that's probably disappoint those here. If so there are plenty of other games out there to curb your violent tendencies.
Dang I wish this was good the sega art style looks awesome. I guess rodea the sky solider is better
@Medic_Alert So it's not review bombing, it's review glittering. They are giving it glowing reviews on purpose? For shame. I'm still keeping my 8/10 score though.
Yeah I will be avoiding this one at all costs. Why couldn't it have had the polish and love put into it like New Super Lucky's Tale or A Hat In Time? Quite a shame.
@Linker2A03 Heard it in Yes, Minister, the other day.
When I saw this game during the Nintendo Direct, it just screamed "bust" to me. It looked like Mario 64 meets Banjo Kazooie and Crash Bandicott, but with none of the charm or fun.
There are so many great platformers out there, particularly on the Switch, that this can be easily avoided.
This and Cyberpunk 2077 will fight for the biggest recent bust in gaming.
Imho it's 5 or 6 / 10. Got the same crazy vibe as Nights 20 something years ago.
I expected this after the demo.
It's such a weak platformer at it's core that it makes middle of the road late 90's and early 2000's forgettable 3D action/platformers games like Croc, or the Legend of Kay look like they're Super Mario 64 or Crash Bandicoot.
It feels like a game that was made with blinkers as if no other 3D platformer existed and that being able to move and jump was good enough to start making a game with.
@Noid The adventure games were amazing. That's crazy talk! I like most 3D Sonic games though, including Forces. Didn't like the Balan Wonderworld demo one bit.
PSH! Strange is my middle name. I'm buying it!
Hm, sounds like it should be called Banal Wonderland, amirite?
Beware the PS2 3D platformer apologists over on Twitter. Apparently there were great platformers in this era...
@GumballOopsEggWobble
Appreciate the honesty. I'm picking this up as well. Looks like it is straight out of my brain.
@Elvie James would absolutely be saying that
I think we all saw this coming, but good lord, this is sad.
Conflicted between wanting to support Yuji Naka but not wanting to play this
@masterLEON Banal Blunderland
I'm so happy about this 3/10 after the bulls*it that they are doing on metacritic. They really deserve it
Yeah that sounds like exactly what I'd expect from the creators of Sonic.
@GrailUK "Get the girl or save the planet is generally enough for me lol."
Oh certainly, platform games don't need to be Citizen Kane or anything . But DK getting so angry about banana theft or Bowser stealing Peach AGAIN never fails to make me laugh. When I fall into the pit for the 1000th time, it allows me to smile about the whole enterprise a bit. I think there's value in that.
that's disappointing. guess i'll wait for the next sonic to come out (if that even ends up being good.)
It’s a real shame, I had high hopes that this game would be something of an unofficial follow up to Nights, but the demo was pretty bad.
The lack of analogue control was baffling, considering Nights was designed around the Saturn’s 3D pad and the camera would constantly reset its position back behind the main character rather than stay where I’d placed it.
Apparently the 0-day patch addresses those things but without an updated demo I don’t really want to plonk down the cash to find out. It’s a real shame as I’d like to have supported Yuji Naka and show Squeenix that there is still a market for these types of games.
Too generous...
I would say Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima are simply behind on the times and ignored how platformers evolved in the past twenty years, much like the issues with Suzuki stance on game design and Shenmue 3, but this game doesn't even hold a candle to Sonic Team's offerings in the mid-90s.
NiGHTS and Burning Rangers on the Sega Saturn, the two non-Sonic games this pair is probably most known for, are better games overall.
NiGHTS's gameplay isn't all that similar to Balan Wonderworld, despite the aesthetic similarities, but is the perfect example of minimalism design working well. Balan Wonderworld aims for minimalistic controls in a genre where it doesn't work.
Burning Rangers has certainly aged, but is a great experimental take on 3D platformers while the industry was still struggling to figure out how to make that genre work. Balan Wonderworld plays it way too safe in comparison.
If what Naka said was true, this was Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima only chance from Square Enix. This game is now a huge stain on their career and it's going to be even harder to get a game greenlit elsewhere. It's a shame, but they're probably going to get sent to the Final Fantasy XIV sweatshop.
Plays fine on my switch.looks great.not saying game of the year or anything like that.but I'm not have those issues plays great on switch
@Muddy_4_Ever Yeah, it would be boring without them
@Madder128 I agree on Devil’s Third - a hidden gem - but it brought a lot to the table mechanically and really tried to do something different than every TPS at the time. It was panned for what it wasn’t, rather than for what it was. I think Rodea Sky Soldier is the better comparison.
Balan seems like it’s failing to do what it set out to do. I think the game stands on its unique style and vibe alone which will probably be enough to get sales and carry some people through a slog of a game.
How did this get out of the company?
They should be paying people to play this game.
I have to assume that those defending this game are being willfully contrarian.
@Dr_Lugae Darnit I was going to say that
@SwitchForce What are you talking about? The game that is this heavily inspired by Nights would definitely be appealing to the people that played Nights originally. And they would all be adults now.
And just because the game is not focused on violence doesn't necessarily mean it isn't a game adults would enjoy, and review poorly. Super Lucky's Tale is a game designed for a younger audience and it still reviewed well. Many Nintendo games are enjoyed and designed for both younger and older audiences.
For anyone disappointed in this game, I urge you to consider picking up Kaze and the Wild Masks, it just dropped on Friday and while it's a 2D platformer, it will definitely cleanse the palette from this bad experience. It is like old-school Sonic 1, 2, & 3. It's just smooth and fun and fast. Highly worth it.
The demo was enough to tell me to stay away, but the seizure inducing mess that was patched out.. makes me want to never get this game. It seems like an absolute garbage fire.
Looks like modern Sonic games don't even need Sonic in them to fail miserably.
Bought it and love it ♡3♡
@KateGray
It's a very old turn of phrase...
It's even in this widely used dictionary:
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/to-snatch-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory
I thought this clever inversion originated from Churchill, but a bit of research (using the internet!) seems to suggest it could be far older than that.
@Linker2A03
Right? It's worrying that a writer would think that it's new.
@Strictlystyles finally, I found Mr. "CONSUME THE PRODUCT" man himself
Always awkward when the super hard core show up and try to tell the other 99% things are actually really great. Look I’m a fan of things that nobody else should spend their money on either - it’s ok, you can still enjoy the game.
without even mentioning something as good as Super Mario Odyssey, when you can play New Super Lucky's Tale or the original Yooka Laylee on Switch why would you even bother with this unholy mess...
@Donnerkebab I think the craftsmanship of level design and the realization of the world those levels happen in is symbiotic and harmonious. I'd really recommend this video if you haven't seen it. It breaks down just how INTRICATELY Tropical Freeze was in level design:
https://youtu.be/d5wIIwBL784
When you compare these compelling characters in spaces that invite exploration with... whatever Balan Wonderworld is... the consistent quality of Nintendo becomes even more appreciable.
It's idiotic to think that liking the fast action platforming gameplay in Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic Heroes means you must automatically like this completely different game that just got designed by the same person who worked on some Sonic games.
@Ardisan It worked in Unleashed because the graphics were pushing that 12fps gameplay, and most of the levels were lengthy in 3D sections.
The boost games suck because they're huge pace breakers, Generations is basically a fancy demo if you strip out the 2D gameplay. Then of course comes Forces with its "hold-a-button-to-win" gameplay.
After playing this game for a solid 3 hours I have to say it’s really not THAT bad. I didn’t play on switch so I didn’t experience the technical issues but I’d give the game a 6.5. Game is definitely a bit dated by today’s standards but it’s also not a game you wouldn’t want to finish (like the way I felt about 06’ sonic the hedgehog)
If the game goes on deep sale I’d recommend giving it a try.
Yeah, saw this one coming. The demo was utterly abysmal, I knew this game was a dumpster fire by then. Shame, this game really needed a win.
@Strictlystyles Support him by withholding your money thereby encouraging him to make great games, not by buying his duds. What's the incentive for him to do better if you incentivize his mediocrity?
@Scoopz I’ve been playing it all morning and it’s really not that bad. Glad I didn’t listen to this review to be totally honest.
And also that’s not how game publishing works, if you don’t support they’ll never get another chance. I’m all for boycotting ***** publishers doing ***** things but if one of my favorite developers makes a so-so game I’m going to support him so that I might see future projects from him. Nothing wrong with giving a game dev feedback and letting them know how you feel while still supporting them.
This game almost gave me a seizure
This game should have been no more than 20 bucks, even at that price though I simply wouldn't be willing to spend the time to sit down and play it.
Some of the music from this game seems pretty solid, shame about literally everything else!
@Okapi The character design is pretty good too. But for some reason they decided to make them practically non-entities.
You'd think with 80 different creature characters and 14 human characters including the main characters. They'd do like Mario, Banjo or Spyro where you talk to and do tasks for them. Rather than them being glorified props dancing on a loop.
I have a feeling when the articles on the usefulness of demos comes back around Balan is going to be a very important mention. The interest drummed up by the trailers and Nights energy was decimated by the demo.
These guys played the demo and made a full group video ragging on how terrible it was. And nothing seems to have been changed. No surprise given how it came close it came out to launch.
Did nobody involved know how bad this was turning out? Then again the studio's named after this character, so it must be the dream project from someone at the top. I don't think they're going to get more games after this.
The only waste here is this review. 3/10, yeah right...
Maybe the Switch version graphics suck, which is not on PS5. But this score is nonsense. This is not a AAA game, but at least a 7-8/10
It's a platformer, it boots to the title screen and doesn't crash. It's more fun than staring at grass all day.
7-8/10
No mention of the final boss that's so difficult that it could actually kill the player and not the character?
B-but the meta critic user scores said this game was fantastic!😩
The first time I had seen the trailer last year, this seemed like a sub-par, half-arsed effort which stood on only one thing, poking those nostalgic nerves. Interesting to know that they haven't done anything extra to make the demo worth downloading.
When the only positive for your game is 'half-decent graphics' you know you done f****d up. Should have launched around Christmas with a LOT more care and attention, possibly from outside studios, to make this semi-playable.
@Shiiva Just checked, it's £49.99... like... WUT?!?!?!
This demo was bad. The mechanics are fundamentally broken. Jumping feels off, there's no weight to the character, there's seemingly no point to what you're doing, the QTE's didn't add anything - and seriously, I thought we were done with QTEs? Who ever thought they were a good idea? - the different abilities is an interesting concept, but executed so poorly... If one of your abilities is lost, and you need it, what then? Backtrack all over the place to find a crystal that HOPEFULLY is holding the one you need at that time? They seem to show up randomly in the crystals, so you could potentially keep getting ones you can't use. What a mess of a game, and this was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Nights? Maybe stick to the 2D plane, Mr. Naka.
Has anyone seen the bot accounts on metacritic giving this a 10/10. Its riddled with them. Then go all the way down to the bottom of people warning about the bots and giving a 0/10.
@Franklin oh no, a writer enjoyed a specific phrase, better discredit her career and inform her that Google exists
I only wish there would be a physical version of this game ☆3☆ Alas, I still can dream of it ^3^
I still curiously wanna play this game, but there is no way I'm paying the retail price... I'm buying this game used online for hopefully 10 bucks or so
Looking at the Metacritic reviews, this isn't doing well on any platform....
Unless you count the user reviews, some calling it the best game of the generation, lol.
I personally have no interest in this game, but looking at those perfect reviews, there's probably a lot more entertainment to be had from those trying to overhype it.
As admirable as it is to support a creator, I can't help but wonder what those reviews and feedback would be if Yuji Naka wasn't involved in this game.
@Neopolitan I agree, when I saw the trailer I thought that it could be fun, especially with the Nights-esque styling and it's been universally panned. Shame.
Whats so interesting is the 10 score reviews in metacritic.
I understand that some games gets reviewbombed by children but this is like reviewbombing too.
It feels like it is the same person that gives it 10 on different accounts.
I havent tried this game, the gameplay looks really really stiff.
I expected some Sonic adventure open world style game with flawless controls but it feels like Bubsy 3d when I watch it xD its so stiff.
Yuji Naka's Mighty No. 9.
I bloomin' saw that Doshin face you hid there, Alex.
I JUST HAD ONE CHANCE, I DON’T KNOW WHY
IT DOESN’T EVEN MATTER HOW HARD YOU CRY
KEEP THAT IN MIND I DESIGNED THIS GAME WITH COSTUMES IN MIND
THAT’S ALL I KNOW
GRAPHICS AND FRAMERATE ARE KEY
WATCH IT FLY BY AS THE SWITCH VERSION BLEEDS
WATCH THE CLOCK FLY TO THE END OF THE DAY
THE BATTERY TICKS AWAY
IT’S ON UNREAL?
SHOULD’VE LOOKED OUT BELOW
THREW RPGS RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW
TRYING TO HOLD ON, BET YOU DIDN’T EVEN KNOW
ABOUT THE SEIZURE INDUCING BOSS
I KEPT EVERYTHING INSIDE AND EVEN THOUGH I TRIED
IT ALL FELL APART
WHAT IT MEANT TO ME WILL EVENTUALLY
BE A MEMORY OF A TIME WHEN
I TRIED SO HARD TO BRING BACK NIGHTS
BUT IN THE END, IT’S JUST A S*** GAME
I TRIED TO RUN, BUT ONLY JUMPED
IN THE END, IT’S JUST A S*** GAME
Looks like that Hat guy in Mario's Odyssey, obviously copied. Sometimes I think Nintendo is the Apple of the game industry, everyone just followed whatever Nintendo is doing.
@Muddy_4_Ever While story can help, mario doesn't have a deep story
@Samsamsam Notice how the 10 scores are worded, they sound like something an AI would write
Arzest strikes again
@TheLightSpirit Genuine question, on ps5 do the creepy dancing characters still disappear when you get close to them? I tried the demo on switch and they made the game world feel so soulless.
Yikes across the board 😬
@Muddy_4_Ever Good point: and don't forget Celeste. I died more than 5000 times to get to the end of that story!
@Lord "They have used this demo feedback for a lot of games recently and seems they really missed the mark with this." Marvel's Avengers says hi. And that game got a delay.
@KateGray Even I, a non native speaker, had already heard that. Accept that you are wrong with dignity.
We all saw it coming.
I kept an open mind until I played the demo on my PC which is an absolute BEAST power wise. I set everything on ultra and still had a locked 60 FPS and it didn't help what so ever. This game is pure SEGA crap!! WTF is wrong with SEGA developers? The game looks awesome however all the gameplay is absolute *****. Too bad it turned out this way.
@TheLightSpirit An interesting point, indeed. So, there's the first impression which is based on trailers, screenshots, and articles on sites such as our lovely NL. If something passes this stage, I would be seeing some real gameplay on yt. And then I would buy it or add to the wishlist or just skip. The real judging part, however, comes only after I'd actually have played the game. Accordingly, my initial post was not an expression of an opinion or judgement (meant as a point or a assertion) but just a recollection of my first psychological impression of that game (as an experience) which eventually turned out to be in line with this review.
I still don't get why people expected anything from this game. It looked horrible from the very first trailer, and more like a game for 3yo than for adults, although I didn't expect it to be this bad.
This game never looked interesting since the first trailer. And the weird hype it got without even playing it was dumb.
Seems gamers haven't learned anything from the Mighty No. 9 hype fiasco, huh?
@nimnio I'm not going to enter an argument with you or others. I just said what I thought. If you don't agree or think that I misunderstood what she meant then that's fair. The fact is that I am not the only one who thinks this. Have a good week.
@mauhlin12 and I had forgot about that game until now.... 😂
Balan Wonderworld is anything but Wonderful.
@TheLightSpirit No sorry, i meant the dancing creatures that are dotted around the level. I have just looked up some footage from a ps5 playthrough and they do still disappear. I wonder why, it’s such a bizarre choice. Btw i’m not hating i was just looking forward to this game (i loved nights) and i was really disappointed with the demo. I know it’s silly but i feel let down in a way.
@Smug43 This game has nothing to do with Sega.
@TheLightSpirit It's perfectly fine. That's what we are at this site for, I guess. Thank you for allowing me to clarify my point.
@Nintendo4Sonic we get it you like the game. Good for you
More like Balan Underwhelm, amirite?
Balan for Smash
Balan Blunderworld
@SwitchVogel I'm still holding out hope for Bubsy.
Sounds horrible. They should put gameplay elements of any Nintendo game so this site could hype it pushing pre-orders then give it a bad review.
Why was it necessary to Square for this to be out by March 2021, why not just delay the game? If the cost of a delay and rework were too much then why was the game green-lit to begin with?
I am not sure we expect devs who made good games to keep doing it. "I like your old stuff better than your new stuff" doesn't just apply to musicians.
With Artoon/Arzest's track record you would think they were full of staff from Micronics rather than staff that worked on the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Fantasy Zone.
I have a lot of respect for Naka-san and his work, but i just can't get over how utterly HIDEOUS the art direction for this game is. Did they focus test the designs at all, because if they did, I'm sure more than one gamer would have objected to such fuggly ass designs. It's like Lisa Frank levels of hideous.
I knew after watching the original trailer, that this was most likely going to be terrible and not worthy of my money.
I’m still interested but concerned about the seizure triggers. I know they say it was patched but I will wait till I see more reports of its safety.
A THREE! Oof! I was excited about this one, but now...
@samuelvictor What exactly do you find "incredible" about the level design? I found the levels to be very simplistic for a collectathon platformer and not fun to explore, the Balan statues aren't particularly well hidden so there's not really much incentive to explore the levels.
And yeah, we get that the levels are supposed to be dreamlike. That doesn't make the disappearing NPC thing sensible or good. The levels are already barren with only a handful of enemies appearing once in a while in the levels, not having actual NPCs make them feel like barren wastelands. It doesn't leave me wondering what's wrong with this world, it leaves me wondering what's wrong with this game. There's barely anything going on in the level and yet it looks and run so poorly.
I just finished it. Had a really good time. Yes it is flawed but there is heart and charm in it...
@jump THANK YOU. That's what I've been saying. If the foundation is poor, it doesn't matter how much they delay the game. Same thing with Sonic Forces. That game was polished and was fine in that regard. However, the level design and controls were what dragged it down, and delaying the game straight up wouldn't have fixed that.
Blinx The Time Sweeper is proof that Ohshima should have been the director of Balan Wonderworld.
The dude actually knows how to make a 3D platformer.
How disappointing. I was really excited for this game when it was initially announced. I love mascot platformers, but I like to play a variety of different franchises. Even though I haven't played all the Mario games available on Switch, I'd rather try something else. I was hoping this would be it.
@SwitchVogel Mitch no
The art style of this game is so unpleasant.
Square Enix should have delayed the game indefintely and rework urgently the game, when you game don't feel reponsible/engaging to play like the 3D Mario game, is a sign you need to go back to the drawing board, now we see the results of Balan Wonderworld more like Balan Brokenworld.
,
@The__Goomba more like Balan Brokenworld.
Seems whenever this kinda game happens big name develper returns to make a game in genre made name in like shemue 3 or Mighty no 9 always seems to disappoint.
Also guys it's fine to enjoy a bad game or a low scoring game yourself but saying this reviewers wrong should be insert really high score stuff is nonsense. Reviews while they are only an opinion as such however they are way more objectively based than your subjective personal experience with any game and tastes. If you get enjoyment out of it great but professional reviewers are rightfully pointing out its flaws. Its why we read reviews.
@AndreaF96 I laughed at a joke that my friend told me the other day. Turns out he didn’t write it, he’d heard it somewhere else. It was actually quite an old joke.
I should not have laughed. It should not have enjoyed the joke. I’m going to say it now, for all the world to see, so that there can be no doubt as to the sincerity of my self-condemnation...
I WAS WRONG! I WAS WRONG TO LAUGH. I WAS WRONG TO SO MUCH AS CHUCKLE. FOR IT WAS AN OLD JOKE. OLDER THAN I. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER. BUT I DID NOT. AND NOW I PROSTRATE MY WRETCHED SELF BEFORE THE ASSEMBLED MASSES, LEFT WITH ONLY THREE WORDS TO SAY.
I.
WAS.
WRONG.
@TheLightSpirit that’s interesting. This game just sounds fundamentally broken and overall of poor quality. Yes I’m sure it’s an improvement in every way on ps5, but being on ps5 can’t somehow magically fix a fundamentally bad game.
@TheLightSpirit my comment and open ended question was genuine. I haven’t seen or read any of your discussions with other posters so I’m not sure what “you’ve gotten into” and sorry if it was a negative experience.
I’m coming from a place of genuine disappointment bc as a (very forgiving) Sonic fan I was excited to support this game. But what I’m hearing is pretty dreadful and my comment was simply: you can pretty up a bad game on ps5 sure, but does that suddenly make it not a bad game?
And yet my 8 year old loves it. He has so many options to choose from, and he loves this game. So do the cousins. I didn't want to buy it because the reviews were coming in on the low end, but he begged me for it and I got it for him. Maybe it's time won't last, but these kids love this game.
@TheLightSpirit well that’s fair, but the review just came out and we’re still discussing the game because it’s fresh but I promise I definitely won’t dwell on a bad game haha. Won’t be the first and last game that’s a disappointment. And I agree sometimes the back and forth in comments can get exhausting.
this game is like Yooka-Laylee, only I'd have more fun playing that instead
Always glad to see future AVGN material coming out, so thanks for this game I guess.
I thought the original trailer looked pretty bad, so for me they snatched defeat from the jaws of defeat
Add 4 review points If you're a fan of Nights and Billy Hatcher. I'd give it a 7/10 but I'm 35 and hate most modern games, so balan reminds me of a more enjoyable time in gaming.
@samuelvictor That's a very low bar to clear for the level design, those are basic things a game needs to get right. And there are some basic things it still doesn't get right. I would disagree about no space being wasted, there are lots of empty stretches where you're just running and there's nothing to interact with. And just backtracking to a simple puzzle isn't really fun, it's tedious. Backtracking is usually better when backtracking to an old area unlocks a new section. Balan rarely does that because of its linear nature.
And there are better ways to portray that desolation and crumbling mindscape than having plain looking levels with nothing in them. Like you know, having more than 5 enemies in an entire level for starters. The levels could've shown that the levels were actually crumbling and infested with enemies to show that your interaction with the levels is actually fixing the characters' problems but nope.
The simplicity of the game proves to be a hindrance, not a benefit. Simple games can be fun when they provide a level of focus that makes the game engaging and varied, Balan does not. It's just simple to be cheap.
What you say? This is best game of century!
that's a shame, the art style is pretty and if this had done well, it could've led to a resurgence in big-budget 3D platformers outside of Nintendo and the odd Knack. the AAA space is so homogeneous, but why is this the second major release in the span of 6 months that had to be patched due to potential epilepsy dangers??? like, what? publishers and developers, your games can wait, especially these days when there are more than enough video games available to tide them over while you ensure that it is actually safe to play.
Another major critic has posted their review of Balan in IGN, they gave it a 4/10:
https://www.ign.com/articles/balan-wonderworld-review
So yeah, critics are deservedly slamming this game, it seems like only a matter of time before a parade of low scores sinks what little reputation this game has left.
what struck me playing the demo on Switch, is that graphically, it looked this a PS3 launch title
@Lord Depends on what division of Square was working on this.
@Strictlystyles Wow, you must really like the guy if you feel like you need to light $60 on fire for him.
@BAN I’ve actually played it for a few hours and it’s really not that bad of a game. I can name worse tbh. If anything the gameplay is dated but it isn’t necessarily a bad game.
I am actually a fan of the games that Yuji Naka creates. I will probably buy this when it is on sale. When I play his games I always get a feeling they are a game generation behind. I had a blast playing Rodea the Sky Soldier and a lot of reviews were harsh on the game.
@Strictlystyles There’s like millions of video games in existence so that’s not saying much.
boy am I relieved while reading this review.
I played the demo over and over and wondered what was wrong with me, I feared for my own life. I thought I had lost it, no more taste in games and no longer able to see the bright side of stuff.
fortunately, decent games are still decent games and I can still tell whether a game is good or not. this is not.
the only thing I can quote from the first part of the game is JAMES POND. I hope everyone is old enough to recall the game.
This game is an absolute dog. The result of an artistic vision going unchecked and unrestrained, with yes men greenlighting every creative decision and nobody stopping to take stock or to offer criticism on the product. With all that said, I've had untold fun watching the demo when it came out and now the game being torn apart in Discord streams, with everyone taking the piss and howling with laughter over what a ***** show this game is. The game may be awful but I am always going to have good memories with it for that reason.
I'm amazed they didn't end up marketing this as a budget game for preschoolers or something. The gameplay is utterly infantile, the character designs are appealing and the environments are bright and colourful, and there is a lack of English text being used throughout the game. Then maybe the criticism would have been less harsh.
As everyone already knows about me I like to support devs by buying all major games on Switch. However this is a big NO. Everything about this game has always looked like UTTER *****. What the ***** is up with that main characters stupid design? To think this platform also has the actual games of this side of the millennium in Breath of the Wild, MH Rise, Mario Odyssey too.
Oh yes, it is definitely a WONDER land, it got that part right.
Dear SE,
You've done a good job with the Switch so far. Saga games, Final Fantasy games, Star Ocean, Legend of Mana, Trials of Mana translated for the west-- Not bad. Feel free to continue using your resources to, I dunno... Toss Act Raiser, Soul Blazer, and Illusion of Gaia our way again, and maybe send at long last Terranigma to the western hemisphere. KTHNXBAI!
@Mynameishello Can you say what's precisely wrong with "main characters stupid design"? You got me asking.
@sonicbooming After reading your comment about Kaze and the Wild Masks have checked and it looks like there's a physical version being released so I'll be getting the physical, thanks.
Watching a little, like 10 seconds, of gameplay from that first level game me an extremely bad headache from that weird warping effect on the game world.
@Strictlystyles feeling bad already?
@ChinaTheAce
No. I’ve played through most of the game and albeit dated, actually isn’t as bad as the reviewers say.
I want to get this game — when it is 67% (or more) off.
It is a nice-looking version of a 1990s platformer.
Great idea but terrible execution.
Someone from Famitsu gave Balan a 9.
Balan Wonderworld – 7/7/9/7 [30/40]
I tried this, and all I have to say to the people that think they should have delayed it's release is "you can't polish a turd".
Balan Wonderworld is best game! Y'all are just mean!
@Bibi This will end up in discussions as worst game of the generation.
I just bought this game on clearance at Walmart for $4 brand new! FOUR DOLLARS!! I have never seen that before...and ya, it sucks
*its, for the phrase "when its framerate".
