[Update 21/4/21, 13:20 ADT: Looks like the physical release is not download code only - the code is probably for the bonus content, and the game will be on a cartridge.]
It's appropriate that the abbreviation for the long-running Ace Attorney series is "AA", because that's roughly what we're all saying right now.
Finally, finally, The Great Ace Attorney (and its sequel!) has been freed from its cage, and is making its way to the West with an official localisation. The game first came out in Japan in 2015, and has been top of the list of Ace Attorney fans' list of wants for a long time. In fact, while we've been waiting for it to be localised, Spirit of Justice (2016) came out — and, not counting HD re-releases, that's the last Ace Attorney game we've seen.
The Great Ace Attorney games are set in the vague, hand-wavey "past", in old-timey England, where the protagonist (and Phoenix Wright's ancestor) Ryunosuke Naruhodo meets "Herlock Sholmes" and solves various mysteries around the Queen's Realm.
The Great Ace Attorney 1 and 2, known as "Adventures" and "Resolve", will be packaged together in the "Chronicles" version, similar to the Ace Attorney Trilogy, as well as extra content, including:
- "Story Mode", which auto-plays the game, so you can watch it like an anime movie
- A gallery of art and illustrations
- Commentary from the art director
- "Moving pictures (i.e. fully animated videos)"
- The ability to switch between Japanese and English audio at will
- Eight additional ”Escapades” (mini-episodes separate from the main story)
- Two “Special Trial” videos
- Three alternate, optional costumes for The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve
- Thirteen video clips from “Ryunosuke Naruhodo’s Seven Days of Sin”
We're not sure what Ryunosuke Naruhodo's Seven Days of Sin is all about, or why the press release describes videos as "moving pictures" like it's still 1910, but we're definitely intrigued.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles will come to Switch, PS4, and Steam on July 27th, and a physical release will be available for Switch, although it's not yet available in Europe for pre-order.

"Capcom please stop making prosecutors so attractive"
Eh? What?
I am SO pumped!! I've been waiting for a new Ace Attorney game on my switch ever since I finished the trilogy. Definitely a day one purchase for me.
YES so hyped! Thank you Capcom 😍
I was just listening to Pursuit from the first AA game. Awesome timing
I played the fan translation of the first game, it was really refreshing to see a new take on the Ace Attorney cast. I’m very excited to check out the sequel, I’m happy that Capcom is putting a lot of effort into this localization.
I believe only some of Sherlock Holmes is public domain - its something like after a certain point in the canon, it's not public domain anymore. Something like that.
Edit: Okay, from what I can gather from a quick google search, Sherlock eventually becomes nicer, and more respectful towards women, and that version of Sherlock is not in the public domain.
Cool.
Now port Gacha Force.
Best news this week.
Hopefully a true physical Asian English or the Japanese version has English subtitles like the HD Trilogy.
Whoa, the inclusion of a "Story mode" is absolutely laughable.
It... completely removes the gameplay element from the visual novel!
Yessss! I've been waiting for so long...! Finally!
Still can't believe that is real. After waiting so, so long...
YESSSSSSSSS!!!
The only thing we're missing now is AAI2. My God what a time to be alive.
Yes!!
Here's hoping for an Asian physical release with the game in English on a bloody cartridge! Download codes in a box can go **** themselves.
Yes! This is fantastic news!
Maybe getting closer to a Miles Edgeworth collection huh?
@1ofUs I SAID WHAT I SAID
does it weird anyone else out that they arent localizing any part of naruhodo's name to match wright's? it feels like someone might not draw the connection immediately if they didnt know his japanese name
@everynowandben I figured there was some legal thing I didn't know about, but I'm honestly ok with the goofiness of Herlock Sholmes anyway!
NO OBJECTIONS HERE
YES
Ace Attorney is probably my favourite series so I’m super keen to finally get the chance to play these.
YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS
Regarding the physical version, I think the download code is for the pre-order dlc. Or at least I hope so
amazing news! i'm so excited!!!
@KateGray I agree 😀 goofy names are part of the series' charm. I just wanted to point it out because I think it's odd and vaguely interesting.
@KateGray I think your source regarding the physical version just being a download code has misunderstood. If I'm reading correctly, the download code is for the pre-order content labelled "From the Vaults".
https://www.ace-attorney.com/great1-2/us/product/
Sadly there is no mention of a physical edition at all in the UK page..
Case with download code? Well, play-asia, here i go again.
Nice! I've never gotten an Ace Attorney game before, but I might get this one. I'll probably wait on reviews.
Most exciting news I've heard this year. Capcom is on top of the world right now. So happy I'll finally be able to play these games.
Nice. I have the originals but it will be nice to go back through on switch. Here is hoping the second trilogy is ported.
Why a download code only physical release! That’s completely unnecessary and defeats the point of a retail release! The games aren’t even that big to require the large capacity carts!
@KJ85 Updated! Cheers for the heads up
I would probably get this day 1, if Neo TWEWY didn't come out on the same exact day.
so another game from the leak turns out to be true
Alright, I am gonna buy Ace Attorney trilogy and then the great ace attorney.
Hurry up Capcom... I wanna see pre-orders
Will be getting this physical as soon as preorders are live.
As long as the physical version contains a cartridge, I'll be pre-ordering this as soon as it becomes available. Best video game news I've heard all year!
@KateGray No problem, but I think you should mention that the physical version does not seem to be planned for Europe..
https://www.ace-attorney.com/great1-2/uk/product/
@KateGray Basically all of Sherlock holmes except the last short story collection is in the public domain. The stories in that collection were published between 1921 and 1927 and some of them have since gone into the public domain as Disney didn't bribe any politicians to extend copyright yet again.
As @everynowandben said one of the things still under copyright is him mellowing out but my favourite thing still under copyright about him is how he retired to the Sussex downs to raise bees. I live in Sussex so always liked this part.
@Glassneedles I hope the next BBC Sherlock episode is about bees and not hacking or whatever
I'm starting to like how full of releases July is getting!
My wallet disagrees and is trying to sue me for abuse.
Edit: Same release date as Neo: The World Ends With You. Please send help.
1st we have MH Rise, then Capcom Arcade Stadium, then we have Ghosts and Goblins, then we have Stories 2, and now this for switch?
Along with RE Outrage (if true) and Great Ace Attorney, Capcom will be my favorite company
This year is giving us DP remakes and the last Ace Attorney games I haven’t played/seen.
Eat your heart out 2017!
Hooray, I’ve played the fan translation but nice that we’re getting an official version!
"a physical release will be available for Switch, although it's not yet available in Europe for pre-order."
If I know Capcom Europe as well as I think I do, we won't be getting a physical release in Europe at all. The EU page only mentions a digital release, so I think it's safe to assume that will be the case.
I picked the perfect time to get into Ace Attorney, started with the Trilogy on Switch last summer and have now played all the games sans Miles Edgeworth which they refuse to re-release or port to the west and I am not salty about that not at all why would you think that.
@Dethmunk Mythology? Arthur Conan Doyle was still writing this character around 100 years ago. The character and adventures are 100% undisputedly fictional
Never thought we'd see the distant prequels ported (and finally localized!) before the IV-VI collection, but far be it from me to complain. More Ace Attorney goodness on Switch!
At this rate, even Investigations 2 might make the cut someday. And then there's that seventh flagship game long in the works... :3
Only BotW2 can top my excitement for this, my favorite piece of gaming news in months!
But wait, they are naming Holmes that but are leaving Ryunosuke Naruhodo? No Robin Wright? No Finch... Rong? Jay Okay?
now capcom just needs to translate the miles edgeworth 2 game.
I'm torn. I used to love this series and I was always curious about these retro AAs. That said, after playing through seven of them already, I think the magic is gone. But for anyone new to the series, they're definitely worth checking out.
FINALLY!! This just topped all summer releases for me.
The most hypest of all the news!
Can only assume this date has been set for ages cause releasing at the same time as TWEWY is rather inconveinient.
Though, makes for a good way to break up the two games. Gotta savour the new AA feeling
I'm not crying! You are crying!
..okay, we are all crying, this is really a localization miracle ;w;
Day 1!!!! My only gripe is that they changed Iris’ last name but will buy either way
Genuinely the most exciting game announcement of the year for me, I can't wait <3
This so cool, so excited that i can play this!
Capcom have gone into overload!
Arcade Stadium
Monster Hunter Rise
Ghosts n’ Goblins
Monster Hunter Stories
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Resident Evil 8
theres so many games releasing in july my wallet is done for
So excited for this news. Love this series so much!!!
Coincidentally, "AA" is also a rough translation of Naruhodo.
Sorry I’m late. I had work.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!
Any love for a western 3DS release?? 👍🏼👍🏼
@Bobb Well he is Japanese, It would be weird to have an English name.
i hope in italian too
@Fulbright I know, but so was Phoenix before they decided to localize the game setting to the US.
It was mostly a joke
DAMN YOU CAPCOM!! TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY!!
And Europe gets shafted again. Not surprising, but disappointing for sure.
I will... TAKE THAT!
im so pumped IM SO PUMPED. i stayed away from spoilers of this for so long waiting for an offcial release, cant wait to get it
Yay, I'm glad it's been confirmed as real! The Great Ace Attorney games are all new to me, so it'll be like new games!
This is exciting; I just recently replayed SoJ and made me really want to play more Ace Attorney games; and these games always seemed very interesting with their own twist on the formula. The only thing I don't like is that it's coming out in July--the same month as Monster Hunter Stories, my most anticipated game of this year. I mean, I know that's a weird thing to complain about, but still...
Appreciate the Professor Layton joke!
Well, now that this is official, this is the most excited I’ve been for a game since...I don’t know, Metroid Prime 2 (sequel to my favorite game of all time)?
Good things come to those who wait.
And there's also a U.S. physical release. Sweet!
I strongly doubt that Capcom would deign to release this in Australia/Europe though. I'd flip 'em a bird or two, but they're still getting my money at the end of the day.
Please Capcom. A 3DS version for the West.😞
@MarcusIsCool Why would you want that when you're getting a better version?
Took them a while. Especially since they went after a fan translation
@Entrr_username I don’t own a switch. Just a 3DS.
@RupeeClock It should probably only be unlockable after beating the game, but otherwise, why not? Instead of a "visual novel," it's simply called a "movie," or in Internet terms a "Let's Play" video just without additional commentary from the player.
Overall, it's pretty interesting to see a story-driven games turned into an official movie adaptations. "Metroid: Other M" and "Lego Batman 2" did the same thing, and there have even been some semi-official anime adaptations of certain games including the original "Ace Attorney" trilogy itself. Heck, "Ace Attorney" even has a live action movie adaptation that was pretty good.
@J-Biz Um, isn't most mythology fictional, or at least partial fiction (like Johnny Appleseed) or disputed depending on your religious beliefs? The word comes from "myths," after all. Also, just because a certainly mythology has a traceable origin doesn't make it any less of one.
There's no time requirement for the concept, either, even if something is still being actively written by the original author. You could even discuss the current mythology of "One Piece" if you want.
Physical copy in the US has me excited!
There some things I still question,
-Physical version of Ace Attorney Turnabout Collection is Japan only, two cartridges or both on a singular cart?
-Westerns physical release of the Great Ace Attorney has a cartridge or is it a download code in a box?
-Does the Ace Attorney Turnabout Collection Japan physical edition include an English option in addition to its normal Japanese?
I am... impressed that they’ve done this. Given the lengths gone to obscure the Japanese origins of the original Ace Attorney games, I had long assumed that localising these entries would not be a top priority for Capcom. And given the number of years it took, maybe that’s a fair assessment. But either way, it happened, and I’m impressed with the effort put into it. Especially the voice work, which can be make-or-break in a narrative driven game like this. It seems they haven’t much dialled down Van Zieks’ penchant for being a incorrigible racist. One with pretty hair, admittedly, but a racist nonetheless.
Now I should really get around to actually finishing the second game...
@Low_ink you’ve got to get the trilogy, the gameplay is such a blast and they make you get emotionally attached to the characters like no other game.
@TheFox I know what you mean, I feel that the magic was gone in all the entries after the trilogy (except great ace attorney), and that’s because the creator of AA, shu takumi left after the trilogy, he was the one behind the amazing characters and witty dialogue, but he’s back in the great ace attorney! It’s bound to be magical again.
Woo!
AFAIK Sherlock Holmes still isn't fully public domain in the US despite being so in most of the rest of the world, hence the spoonerising.
I kind of like the change, I think having a thinly veiled parody of SH instead of the real one fits the tone of the series well.
@KateGray Let’s hope the BBC Sherlock finale doesn’t go the same way as the poor ONM Twitter account.
https://twitter.com/nintend0mag/status/608647915674955776?s=21
Did they remake the entire game for the Switch? Because it looks really, really good for a 3DS game!
I never thought we'd be getting these games! Perfect way to celebrate AA's 20th. Can't wait to buy and play this myself!
@RupeeClock horses for courses.
@Maxz Matthew always thought these tweets were me, but I promise they weren't! I would never stoop so low
@Mahhayo I think I may, sounds fun!
The fact that they changed Sherlock Holmes' name by just moving the S in his first name to the beginning of his last name is both dumb and amazing all at once. Perfectly on-brand for the usual "Frank Sahwit" style of the localizations.
@Mahhayo I didn't realize the creator left, but it makes sense. What really made the original trilogy so great was the relationships between Phoenix and Maya, and Miles and Gumshoe. The other games tried to recapture that, but the back and forth between Apollo and Trucy or Miles and Kay (maybe? she was really forgettable) never came close.
@KateGray The plot thickens... Who needs Sherlock Holmes (or indeed Herlock Sholmes) when life’s greatest mysteries remain unsolved.
“Grate Kay and the Case of the Bewildering Bees” is a work unfinished. The game is afoot!
@OstianOwl Sheri Bobbins: It's an original creation, like Rickey Rouse or Monald Muck.
Is the standalone version on Play-Asia physical does anybody know? Description is frustratingly vague.
Thank you so much Capcom! I’ve been waiting so long for this as a huge Ace Attorney fan! Can’t wait to play it!
I am a bit confused on how PS4 won’t have physical copies in the West but NS will
@TheFox yes exactly! The fun, witty energy in the relationships and dialogue was gone imo.
