[Update 21/4/21, 13:20 ADT: Looks like the physical release is not download code only - the code is probably for the bonus content, and the game will be on a cartridge.]

It's appropriate that the abbreviation for the long-running Ace Attorney series is "AA", because that's roughly what we're all saying right now.

Also, this

Finally, finally, The Great Ace Attorney (and its sequel!) has been freed from its cage, and is making its way to the West with an official localisation. The game first came out in Japan in 2015, and has been top of the list of Ace Attorney fans' list of wants for a long time. In fact, while we've been waiting for it to be localised, Spirit of Justice (2016) came out — and, not counting HD re-releases, that's the last Ace Attorney game we've seen.

HOW OLD IS THE JUDGE AND HOW IS HE STILL ALIVE

The Great Ace Attorney games are set in the vague, hand-wavey "past", in old-timey England, where the protagonist (and Phoenix Wright's ancestor) Ryunosuke Naruhodo meets "Herlock Sholmes" and solves various mysteries around the Queen's Realm.

The Great Ace Attorney 1 and 2, known as "Adventures" and "Resolve", will be packaged together in the "Chronicles" version, similar to the Ace Attorney Trilogy, as well as extra content, including:

  • "Story Mode", which auto-plays the game, so you can watch it like an anime movie
  • A gallery of art and illustrations
  • Commentary from the art director
  • "Moving pictures (i.e. fully animated videos)"
  • The ability to switch between Japanese and English audio at will
  • Eight additional ”Escapades” (mini-episodes separate from the main story)
  • Two “Special Trial” videos
  • Three alternate, optional costumes for The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve
  • Thirteen video clips from “Ryunosuke Naruhodo’s Seven Days of Sin”

We're not sure what Ryunosuke Naruhodo's Seven Days of Sin is all about, or why the press release describes videos as "moving pictures" like it's still 1910, but we're definitely intrigued.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles will come to Switch, PS4, and Steam on July 27th, and a physical release will be available for Switch, although it's not yet available in Europe for pre-order.
