The Japanese website of the upcoming Switch release Shin Megami Tensei V has apparently been updated by accident.
As a result, it seems we now know the release date of this anticipated title. Persona Central reports It's arriving later this year on 11th November. While the game has already been confirmed for a simultaneous worldwide release, the western launch could perhaps be a day or two after this due to the timezone differences.
The error is believed to have been made during the preparation of Nintendo's E3 2021 Direct broadcast, which is taking place next week on 15th June and will run for "roughly" 40 minutes. New details about the story and gameplay have also been shared.
This isn't the only leak that's happened today - ahead of next week's event, 2K's upcoming games schedule has also supposedly been revealed. How would you feel about a November release for Shin Megami Tensei V? Leave a comment down below.

That's what happens when people have been waiting nearly five years for a game.
Hail, Mr. @SwitchVogel! I wish to commend this to your attention, sir; this is a real and genuine Shin Megami Tensei game.
Seems likely to me. Not into the series myself but that’s great news for SMT fans!
Nice! However, BD/SP comes out the following week, so that could completely ruin SMT5's momentum, especially in Japan.
Hope not, tho.
November 11, a Thursday... what an interesting date. I call that Remembrance Day, but it is known widely as Armistice Day. I'm assuming this is coincidental.
I got buddy of mine who's gonna be thrilled about that!
@JuiceMan_V lol, I don't think SMT and Pokemon have that much direct competition dude.
That's great! One of my most anticipated games this year.
I'm cool with November 2025 as long as they nail it
@Heavyarms55
It's not direct competition, but the following week, we know what's going to be tearing up the charts and SMT5 is being positioned as a big game as well.
Like I said, I hope I'm wrong about this.
@JuiceMan_V
Two different demographics, mate. One is for children, the other is for people who want to destroy god.
Either can be either.
Really hyped for this. As a Tokyo Mirage Sessions fan, I can't wait to finally play a new game from Atlus that isn't a port of an older one.
I'm still quite nervous they're gonna do something stupid and turn it into an action game as it seems to be the popular thing to do with JRPGs these days... Or continue with the trend of personafying the story & characters like they did in Apocalypse.
Hopefully E3 comes with a trailer that can put my fears to rest.
Nice to get leaks about actual games as opposed to ethereal hardware lol.
@JR150 Given how any Pokemon "fan" thread goes, I'm pretty sure both fandoms consist primarily of emo, would-be godslayers. I'd rate the SMT crowd as "somewhat less likely to carve pentagrams into their foreheads", though.
@Expa0
I highly doubt they'll drastically change the combat system for a new mainline entry. Every SMT game (1-4A) has always been turn-based so I don't think that'll change.
And given the negative reception to 4A, I also doubt they'll go too hard in that direction, but we'll have to wait and see.
November 11.
This had better be real. I feel like I've waited eons for this game. The wait has been worse for this than Persona 5, which also took forever.
@Expa0 Atlus has already pretty much confirmed it'll be building off of the same combat system as other recent SMT games, and while nothing can be said for sure about the writing, the tone of the trailers we've seen so far doesn't point toward anime tropes and excessive humor. If anything, evidence seems to point toward Nocturne being more on an inspiration on it. Of course, nothing can be certain until we know more about the game.
@JR150
It doesn’t matter if there’s no direct competition or if they’re different demographics.
Sales for either game can still be affected by the other. That’s just basic business if two products are in the same market.
How? The game has been in development for 5 years with NOTHING shown besides the initial trailer. Now they have a release date? *****.
If true that's a week before pokemon which could hinder sales for SMT5 which this game needs to sell
@Chamver Well, we got a new trailer in a Nintendo Direct last year, which is when they revealed that the game would be releasing simultaneously worldwide.
this is exciting news. cannot wait to see more footage of this great game.
Awesome to hear. November's already looking great with SMT and the Pokemon remakes, I'll be buying both myself.
11 is seen as a magickal number in occult circles,so that would be a perfect date.im getting really exited guys/girls.
November sounds perfect, gives me time to finish both the Nocturne remaster and the fan‐translated original SMT.
@JuiceMan_V while Pokémon and SMT share game mechanics, their actual player bases barely overlap AFAICT, due to Pokemon being aimed at all ages and SMT being focused on hyperviolence.
Currently playing Nocturne, and i will get this day 1!!! Atlus and Falcom are JRPG gods
@KBuckley27 Atlus is so much better than game freak, the target audience is not the same xD
That'll be half the direct taken up with unnecessarily long gameplay videos, character introductions, etc... 🙄
@JuiceMan_V Why do the charts matter? If they were similar games you could say most people would have to pick one or the other, but that seems unlikely with these two. Being upset the Pokemon or SMT sells better is like being upset that potatoes sold better than chewing gum. Not really an appropriate comparison.
Plenty of time to release Persona 5/Royal on Switch before that release date.
@JuiceMan_V It's not like Pokemon fans play anything beside Pokemon anyway. Especially not games they consider to be "Pokemon clones".
@nmanifold not necessarily... when they showed the fourth game, they had a 2-3 minutes long gameplay/story trailer
This is one of those, "it was announced so long ago, that I've completely lost interest now" games.
Unfortunately I'm just not interested anymore, I've had my fill of JRPG games on the Switch (and then some) since this was announced.
I'll pass but good news for anyone who still cares.
November release date gives the game a lot of competition but I think it'll pull through. Here's hoping for gameplay at E3.
@gamering oh yeah and this...
This is a gutsy move by the developers, very gutsy. A game like this, unless its got Final Fantasy level marketing attached to it, will not match up well against bigger games due to come around that time.
And literally LOL at everyone who thinks the sale of Pokemon or any other big game won't effect the sales of SMT because "different demographic".
Thats ridiculous...
I mean, you one can't except everyone to have a sense of how marketing works, but LOL...
I clean forgot about this game being in the pipeline.
I can only imagine the kind of torture this title's announcement history has been for fans of the series. ^^
It would be a perfect time! The big third party game for november, same as Skyrim and Diablo 3 in other years.
We would just need to know now the release date of Rune Factory 5 (it´s also coming out this year)! Ah, yes, and Bayonetta 3, but...
@Razer There is ALWAYS a Pokemon game in November. So are you saying no game should be released in any November, ever?? Come on, man, November is the perfect month to release a game, with Black Friday, Christmas and such pretty close. Who cares about Pokemon? Besides, it´s just a (crappy) remake, it´s not the gen IX. I honestly don´t think it will sell that much.
@Heavyarms55
Like how it's a bad idea to release any major game in close proximity to a GTA launch because it might get drowned out, the same principle applies here.
And please stop saying anyone is "mad" at anything. Bringing up a point about the release date of a game is just that.
@JuiceMan_V There is a new Pokemon every year, every November, you can´t compare that to the launch of a new GTA...
Jeez man. Can't leakers take a freaking break
Looks amazing
As someone who is a fan of both. This is going to effect my outcome. Pokémon can wait.That being said, after a month of beating V , I’ll be on to Pokémon. Maybe there are other games they haven’t mentioned that has a late release date 2021. Xenoblade? If that’s the case all bets are off. Xenoblade wins even if it is a port.
Atlus did say they were aiming for a 2021 release, so it makes sense the date would be announced at E3
I was SMT fan back in the day. But now i'm spoiled by Persona charisma and dating elements, i can't go back.
@liljmoore
There was no "leaker" here.
Atlus themselves updated their SMTV website and the information was on there. So this info is straight from the horse's mouth.
@Expa0 I mean, that initial trailer definitely set a pretty bleak atmosphere. I'd be very surprised if the next trailer just suddenly portrays it as a school drama or something.
I'm beyond ready. One of the main things that convinced me I wanted a Switch
@River3636 I'd love to have X on my Switch. Despite all the drama that surrounded it, it's an outstanding game, loved the combat and exploration.
Probably my most anticipated game of the year.
Despite the issues people had with SMT4 Apocalypse, I found the game to be an absolute joy to play through, and far more refined than the original. It lacked compared to SMT4 in the narrative department, but it was more classic SMT, which is always good even if it did have a bit of a Persona twist thrown in.
I do like that this one is apparently taking visual and design cues from SMT3; that desert landscape is definitely giving me some Vortex World vibes. As long as they keep the Press Turn battle system or continue to improve it, I'll be content.
I'd be very surprised if the next trailer just suddenly portrays it as a school drama
@SwitchVogel That's the spirit, Mr. Vogel! But now our fellow gamer, @dimi, needs the encouragement of the community... 😉
LOL at everyone who thinks the sale of Pokemon or any other big game won't effect the sales of SMT because "different demographic".
@Razer Certainly the number of dollars/euros/rupees/yen available for games is finite. I am having significant difficulty, however, believing that a game like SMT, which occupies a distinct niche and calls forth a rabid fanbase, is competing for the same dollar as a near-universal phenomenon like Pokémon. Especially in the release window. I don't want to still your laughter, but I would appreciate your elaboration here...
@xPH03N1Xx86 The rumor is that Xenoblade X may be ported to Switch, but rumors are rumors. I know Monolith Soft is working on an original game. Who knows? If X does come out, it’ll probably be sometime in March 2022. I know SMT is a priority because overall there will be great games that are going to come out later this year. I will purchase probably all of them it’ll just depend on the order.
YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS
@Slowdive lol
@River3636 Actually monolith is working on a new ip for switch supposely to be a medieval type game and wouldnt be surprise they start working on X2 after their done with the new game.
@RiasGremory Yup. That is correct.
One of my most anticipated games since the first announcement. About the Pokémon situation, I also think is a bold move for Atlus to release only one week earlier than Pokémon. But this time:
1- Nintendo is helping with Marketing
2- Worldwide launch
3- Large Install Base
This could be the best selling SMT and this will be great for the series and fans.
I hope this is real, I was expecting a slip into next year, so I don’t now want to get my hopes too high before a formal announcement - hopefully at E3.
@Hobbesyall how is Noctrune HD. Is it good on switch. Are there less to no issues on there?
Now can we get a SMT 4 remaster on switch?
Also isn’t Sega gonna be at E3 as well? And Sega owns Atlus
@JuiceMan_V Okay man. Whatever you want think or say. You do you.
Pleased for those who have been waiting so long. Hope it's true!
@Razer It cuts both ways though. Sometimes when similar games come out it creates a adjacency that’s wouldn’t be there before and in this case, SMT can kind of “drift” Pokémon. Like “Will you buy the monster collector RPG for babs, or the awesome one for interesting people?” Not saying it’s a great strategy, but it is one.
poor Shin Megami Tensei V it sales gonna be destroyed by GTA 5 and Pokémon Brilant Diamond & Shining Pearl.
I hope they announce EO’s succesor
This game and No More Heroes 3, have been my most anticipated titles for quite some time
@Giancarlothomaz Nobody expects a hardcore niche franchise entry like SMT V to sell as well as mainstream juggernauts like Pokemon and GTA. If SMT V comfortably outsells previous entries and expands visibility for the mainline series, then that's enough.
@COVIDberry you see.
You are right when you say that SMT commands a small dedicated fanbase.
So why then, if you only have a small dedicated fanbase, would you want their attention drawn to other bigger games due in the same month?
Because you need to look at this from the other side, many of those SMT fans will purchase Pokemon games too.
But it runs deeper than just that, lets say a 14 year old loves his JRPGs and is a huge SMT and Pokemon fan.
His birthday is in November, which game do you think the parents are going to buy him?
Also if you think the above example is anecdotal, you've essentially proven my point about people's lack of understanding around how marketing works.
@COVIDberry @dimi Been really curious about mainline SMT as I've been hooked into Persona lately after discovering P4G on Steam last year amidst the hype. Then I also got Royal and Strikers shortly after and even emulating P3P on my phone. I am aware of the differeces between the two and been real tempted to get Nocturne but kinda concerned that its not the experience I'm looking for. This one though seems like the best time to jump into the series. I hope we get to see some gameplay real soon!
November 11th? Atlus, you missed the spooky month by 11 days? How does that happen?
Just got the latest one and just started playing it.
I'm glad it's coming out this year. After playing IV and Apocalypse (which I only finished in 2019), I needed a break from SMT. But at this point, I'm ready for another go.
@anoyonmus I’m loving it, it plays perfectly fine, no noticeable slowdowns and the load times are fast enough
