Re: Opinion: A Big Life Change Means I'm Happy To Wait For A Brand New Animal Crossing

Splash_Woman

Congrats!!

I entered some sort of fugue state at the beginning of December, thought "Yeah, sure, I've got the money to do this", and bought my 7 year old daughter her own Switch 2 for Christmas. Even though we already owned Animal Crossing, the ONLY thing on her Christmas list this year was the 3.0 update. Regardless of how many times we told her that wasn't really something that Santa could deliver, that was the end-all gift, so I decided she might like her own copy of the game to start her own island separate from mine. And, hey, if said island is on the Switch 2 edition (and if our original Switch 2 suddenly becomes all mine 🤫), then that's all the better!

Not only has playing Animal Crossing together over the past month brought us closer, she's learning patience, she's expressing creativity in ways I haven't seen before, and she's doing it all at her own pace in her own weird, unique way. Sure, she has a pile of fossils just sitting outside her museum, and half the island hasn't been weeded, but have you seen how awesome her house looks!? Not to mention she's WAY further in Happy Home Paradise than I ever had the patience for.

And it's not just us playing together, either. My dad and his spouse never stopped playing for even a day since 2020, and all of a sudden we've both been let in to this part of their life that we haven't seen before, flying back and forth to each other's islands almost nightly and, honestly, spending more time with them than I have since my daughter was born. I'm not going to say Animal Crossing is necessarily life changing, but it's been fun to find something that really clicks with my whole family.

She really needs to either sell or donate those fossils, though...

Re: Nintendo Switch's Hulu App Will Be Discontinued Next Month

Splash_Woman

My spouse and I used to watch Hulu on the Switch when we stayed in hotels without a smart TV. Plenty of good(?) memories of trying to get comfortable on a strange mattress while attempting to balance the Switch on a pillow, a process made nearly impossible thanks to the OG's stand. We haven't used it in years, but it's still bittersweet to see it get the axe. Say what you will about the Switch "not needing it", but considering it obviously has the capability to do so it's WILD to me that one of the most popular tablets in the world doesn't have more streaming apps, let alone a web browser.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

Splash_Woman

As a USA gal, our cover will always be iconic. But beyond just looking better overall, I actually took a trip to Denmark in 2007 and bought a copy of this for the Wii while I was over there, so that cover will always be a bit special to me! And yes, the Wii version IS hands down the best version.

Re: Censored Dispatch Artwork Spotted On Nintendo's Digital Storefront

Splash_Woman

I think what bothers me the most about this is that they scrambled so quick to find the big red emergency "Hide the Cleavage" button that they couldn't even be bothered to redraw the star on the middle girl's swimsuit. "Nope, just paint over the whole thing, we can't let the children see God's dirty mistake!"

"But sir, won't they see even MORE exposed breasts if their parents take them to a water park over the summer!?"

"HA! In THIS economy!?"

Re: Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties Is Getting Its Own Direct Right Before Christmas

Splash_Woman

Playing 0 Director's Cut earlier this year finally cracked this series open for me after years of trying! I just finished Kiwami 2 and moved onto LAD: Ishin to pass the time (it's on sale on NA PSN for $12 right now). I'm waiting until this comes out to continue Kiryu's story, it's wild to me that after all these years I'll actually, excitedly be playing a Yakuza/LAD release at launch!

Re: Mega Man Star Force: Legacy Collection Continues The Celebration March 2026

Splash_Woman

It's a LUDICROUSLY good time to be a Mega Man fan! Dual Overide (aka Mega Man 12) was announced, this got a release date, my hand drawn guide to Mega Man 1 is on the way, AND after 16ish years The Protomen put out Act 3! This is all in the span of a month! I don't know whether to be elated at the bounty or terrified that the series will inevitably go back into hibernation after all of this is said and done.

Re: Opinion: Resident Evil Requiem Needs To Solve The Series' Villain Problem

Splash_Woman

As one of the uncultured rabble that hopped onto the series with Resident Evil 4, and who has never played Code Veronica, I've always associated the franchise with green herbs, upgradable guns, ridiculous tentacle monsters, and over the top nonsense rather than any overarching villain or...you know, any plot to speak of. From where I'm standing Wesker wasn't even around all that long. Heck, he himself told me he only had seven minutes to play with me!

Re: Random: Four Legendary Devs Walk Into A Bar... And We're So Very Jealous

Splash_Woman

Imagine the conversations, eh?

Suda51: "Hey guys, I've got this weird rash on my back, you think I should get it looked at?"

Sakurai: "Yeah, that's not great."

Ueda: "I think I've got some cream back in the car, I'll let you borrow some."

Mikami: "I gotta take a leak, be right back."

Sakurai: "Come on, stop picking at it, you're making it worse!"

Suda51: "But it itches SO BAD!"

Re: Video: Check Out Red Dead Redemption's Switch 2 Improvements In This Side-By-Side Comparison

Splash_Woman

From what I can see, both the Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions are giving you entirely different feels based on what you're looking for. Without question, the S2 version looks better. Better lighting, skybox, framerate (at least to my eyes)...across the board a more "real" looking experience.

But then I have to ask myself, is "real" what we really want from RDR1? There's something to be said for the fact that it doesn't quite look like the real wild west, which in turn makes it feel like you're playing an old Western movie. The choppier framerate, the flatter lighting, the sky box that looks like a matte painting hung behind the production, it all comes together to form a different feel that's not 100% better or worse than the S2 improvements.

So the question you have to ask yourself when picking a version is: do you want to be a cowboy, or do you want to be a movie star?

Re: Resident Evil Requiem Almost Had Mouse Controls, But It "Confused" The Gameplay

Splash_Woman

Excerpt from an interview with the developers: "Actually, and I don't know if this is out there yet or not, one of the most interesting quirks with the dev kit for porting games to the Switch 2 is that in order to implement mouse controls you first have to explain the plot of the Kingdom Hearts series to the gameplay. And on some games, you know, the gameplay just gets it! No confusion at all! But Requiem...was not one of those games! (laughs) We actually lost it when we got to Coded, we think explaining Dream Drop Distance may have crashed the code altogether! So we got lucky in that respect!"

Re: Feature: How Mega Starmie Became The Internet's New Queer Icon

Splash_Woman

Also, thanks for the article! You don't see pieces like this as much any more, and while I personally don't think I'll give Mega Starmie another thought after I close this tab, this story put a smile on my face on a hard morning. And the fact that a sexy starfish can give hope and meaning to other queer people like me is a common delight! Keep doing what you do!

Re: Poll: What Do You Make Of The Mario Galaxy Movie's Leaked Yoshi Design?

Splash_Woman

It's not bad, but much like the rest of Illumination's designs it just FEELS off. Like, if you hadn't pointed it out I may not have even noticed it was different, but upon closer examination...like, yeah, the eyes are big, but it's not even that it's...I don't know, really. It's like it's Yoshi's doppelganger, close enough to fool you into thinking it's the real thing, but really it's a monster waiting for its opportunity.

Or it's a CGI dinosaur in a kids' movie, one of the two.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Animal Crossing: Wild World

Splash_Woman

I think I get what they were going for with the Japanese cover. After all, it's not just YOUR world out there, is it? Anyone else with a copy of the game has their own world, and you'll be able to visit those other worlds so long as you're Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is strong enough (Wi-Fi donkey sold separately).

....doesn't mean it doesn't look dumb. Though.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Hey You, Pikachu!

Splash_Woman

I wasn't sure if I should go with the terrible one or the terrible one, but I ended up choosing the terrible one.

And yes, I remember this game all too well...as a child of the 90's I had quite a strong stomach for finicky jank in my games, but even at the time this one's obtuse nature, clunky interface, and general unresponsiveness was a bridge too far. It was like a toy you get by trading in your tickets at an arcade: no, it doesn't work, yes, it breaks easily, and WOW, you spent WAY more money acquiring it than you should have.

I got a cool Pikachu themed N64 out of the deal, though. Thank you, Toys R Us clearance bin!

Re: Newcomers Can Break Final Fantasy VII Remake With New Difficulty Settings

Splash_Woman

Newcomer shmewcomer, as someone who beat the original on PS4 and then Intergrade on PS5, I think I just might turn these on for the heck of it! Unless it bars you from unlocking certain things, of course, but......nah, it'll be too fun to storm through Midgar with the powers of a god while every bad guy in every cutscene continues to think, "You know what, guys? I could take 'em!"

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct September Predictions - What Do You Hope To See?

Splash_Woman

Very unironically: my biggest wish is for confirmation that Powerwash Simulator 2 is coming to Switch 2, along with a release date. We can get into the weeds on other pie in the sky hopes and dreams all day (new 3D Mario, Ace Attorney 7, Mother 3 localized on NSO), but PWS2 being confirmed with a date seems so plausible I can almost taste it...after washing all the grime off, of course.

Re: Review: Bubsy In: The Purrfect Collection (Switch) - Limited Run Cleans Out The Kitty Litter

Splash_Woman

Dark secret time: I was a Bubsy kid. I had 1 and 2 for the SNES, and I distinctly remember renting 3 for PS1 from Hollywood Video. To this day I can say "Go for baroque" and my mom will laugh, and if someone is cooking steaks I'll tell them to throw another dillo on the grill. I never beat any of them, but I have several fond memories of desperately trying...to, you know, make it past level 3...

...I have absolutely no interest in going back.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 System Update 20.4.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

Splash_Woman

You know, we all laugh, but one day we'll all find ourselves in a situation where we'll need to walk across a tightrope, possibly away from a burning building to an adjacent high rise 90 feet in the air, possibly as the culmination of years of clown school at the behest of the old ringmaster that's been letting us stay free of charge on his couch while we look for gainful employment, and what centerpiece of electronic entertainment is gonna be there to steady us on the way across? Not the PS Portal, that's for darn sure.

Re: Yooka-Replaylee Appears To Be Getting A Proper Physical Release For Switch 2

Splash_Woman

@MirrorFate2 I don't despise Banjo-Tooie. It's fine, and as a kid I did (almost) 100% it (curse you, Canary Mary). But it's too bloated; I prefer the simplicity of Banjo 1, where sans Freezeezy Peak/Gobi's Valley you can completely finish each world before moving on to the next (and even that is mitigated by popping into Freezeezy, not collecting anything and only learning Beak Bomb, then going over to Gobi's Valley whilst pretending you were never in Freezeezy to begin with.) To paraphrase a TV show, I see the appeal of Tooie, and I would never take it away from anyone, but I also wouldn't stand in line for it, and Yooka-Laylee is unarguably more of a spiritual successor to Banjo 2 than Banjo 1.

Re: Yooka-Replayee Appears To Be Getting A Proper Physical Release For Switch 2

Splash_Woman

I was super excited for this game when it came out, and it's truly super exciting to see another "full game on card" release!

However...

If someone remastered Banjo-Kazooie for modern hardware, I'd be there at the door Day 1.

If someone remastered Banjo-Tooie, I'd vaguely smile and nod with outstretched fingers to say, "No thanks!"

...this game is Banjo-Tooie.
