From what I can see, both the Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions are giving you entirely different feels based on what you're looking for. Without question, the S2 version looks better. Better lighting, skybox, framerate (at least to my eyes)...across the board a more "real" looking experience.
But then I have to ask myself, is "real" what we really want from RDR1? There's something to be said for the fact that it doesn't quite look like the real wild west, which in turn makes it feel like you're playing an old Western movie. The choppier framerate, the flatter lighting, the sky box that looks like a matte painting hung behind the production, it all comes together to form a different feel that's not 100% better or worse than the S2 improvements.
So the question you have to ask yourself when picking a version is: do you want to be a cowboy, or do you want to be a movie star?
If someone doesn't say, "This battle bus is 100% death proof!" or "Save the World's dead, baby. Save the World's dead." Then I'll be......just as uninterested in watching this as I am now!
Excerpt from an interview with the developers: "Actually, and I don't know if this is out there yet or not, one of the most interesting quirks with the dev kit for porting games to the Switch 2 is that in order to implement mouse controls you first have to explain the plot of the Kingdom Hearts series to the gameplay. And on some games, you know, the gameplay just gets it! No confusion at all! But Requiem...was not one of those games! (laughs) We actually lost it when we got to Coded, we think explaining Dream Drop Distance may have crashed the code altogether! So we got lucky in that respect!"
Also, thanks for the article! You don't see pieces like this as much any more, and while I personally don't think I'll give Mega Starmie another thought after I close this tab, this story put a smile on my face on a hard morning. And the fact that a sexy starfish can give hope and meaning to other queer people like me is a common delight! Keep doing what you do!
The image of a Mega Starmie singing God Help the Outcasts has unfortunately led to the image of a trainer in a black cloak throwing a pokeball at her while singing "Be mine or you will buuuuuurn!!"
I don't know how I feel about this yet, but not all of the adjectives are negative!
At the end of the day it's a list that can't hurt me, and nearly everything I would want to be on it is on it. But if I had to give it a letter grade for its ranking?
It feels like a fake song that would be in a cutaway joke in a TV show. (Man leans in to hit on a woman at a bar) "I, uh, used to be in a band you know." (Shows a clip of "What's that?") "Yeah...we weren't the best, but..."
@The_Nintendo_Pedant I dunno, they probably could have gotten away with "LEGO". After all, it wasn't called "The Barbie Movie", or "The Trolls Movie". Granted, "LEGO" would have been a terrible name, but something like "LegoLand" or "LEGO: Everything is Awesome" (but then that's just "Title colon Subtitle", which also isn't great...)
It's not bad, but much like the rest of Illumination's designs it just FEELS off. Like, if you hadn't pointed it out I may not have even noticed it was different, but upon closer examination...like, yeah, the eyes are big, but it's not even that it's...I don't know, really. It's like it's Yoshi's doppelganger, close enough to fool you into thinking it's the real thing, but really it's a monster waiting for its opportunity.
Or it's a CGI dinosaur in a kids' movie, one of the two.
I think I get what they were going for with the Japanese cover. After all, it's not just YOUR world out there, is it? Anyone else with a copy of the game has their own world, and you'll be able to visit those other worlds so long as you're Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is strong enough (Wi-Fi donkey sold separately).
My daughter's tastes keep fluctuating back and forth between Bluey/Gabby/Paw Patrol and more mature things, and I'm thinking by the time this comes out we'll be firmly in "Bluey is for babies" territory. But man, "Dragon" is her absolute favorite episode, I hope she's still into it so she can play this when it comes out!
I wasn't sure if I should go with the terrible one or the terrible one, but I ended up choosing the terrible one.
And yes, I remember this game all too well...as a child of the 90's I had quite a strong stomach for finicky jank in my games, but even at the time this one's obtuse nature, clunky interface, and general unresponsiveness was a bridge too far. It was like a toy you get by trading in your tickets at an arcade: no, it doesn't work, yes, it breaks easily, and WOW, you spent WAY more money acquiring it than you should have.
I got a cool Pikachu themed N64 out of the deal, though. Thank you, Toys R Us clearance bin!
I very much so enjoyed the article, and it makes me want to dig out my own Mario and try to clean the pet hair out of his wheels to get him working again. But I'm now left with the haunting knowledge that you will be using your children to wipe for the next few months...so thanks for that...
Got mine a couple days ago, and have time set aside tomorrow to get it slapped together. It's coming to work with me to sit right next to my Lego NES and Atari sets!
I vastly prefer third person, and I intend to try it that way, but some games that are designed for first person don't translate well to third (looking at you Elder Scrolls and Fallout). Here's hoping they put enough care into both modes to make them equally enjoyable!
Watch Capcom drive the knife in even deeper by making the Mega Man representatives Roll Caskett and Tron Bonne. "You guys said you wanted Mega Man Legends, right? Doesn't this count!?"
I'm fairly surprised the line wasn't, "Well...while you're waiting...would you like to play the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 game for the Nintendo Switch family of systems?"
Newcomer shmewcomer, as someone who beat the original on PS4 and then Intergrade on PS5, I think I just might turn these on for the heck of it! Unless it bars you from unlocking certain things, of course, but......nah, it'll be too fun to storm through Midgar with the powers of a god while every bad guy in every cutscene continues to think, "You know what, guys? I could take 'em!"
It still seems so weird to me that it doesn't have a release date. The only thing I can imagine is they're wanting to shadow drop it, but...if not at a Nintendo Direct, then when!?
Very unironically: my biggest wish is for confirmation that Powerwash Simulator 2 is coming to Switch 2, along with a release date. We can get into the weeds on other pie in the sky hopes and dreams all day (new 3D Mario, Ace Attorney 7, Mother 3 localized on NSO), but PWS2 being confirmed with a date seems so plausible I can almost taste it...after washing all the grime off, of course.
Dark secret time: I was a Bubsy kid. I had 1 and 2 for the SNES, and I distinctly remember renting 3 for PS1 from Hollywood Video. To this day I can say "Go for baroque" and my mom will laugh, and if someone is cooking steaks I'll tell them to throw another dillo on the grill. I never beat any of them, but I have several fond memories of desperately trying...to, you know, make it past level 3...
You know, we all laugh, but one day we'll all find ourselves in a situation where we'll need to walk across a tightrope, possibly away from a burning building to an adjacent high rise 90 feet in the air, possibly as the culmination of years of clown school at the behest of the old ringmaster that's been letting us stay free of charge on his couch while we look for gainful employment, and what centerpiece of electronic entertainment is gonna be there to steady us on the way across? Not the PS Portal, that's for darn sure.
I played the original when it came out, and played Intergrade in the lead up to Rebirth. I'm unreasonably excited to hang out with Avalanche for a third time on Switch 2!
At least I can usually figure out the intended pronunciation of an "x" title; I know it's been told to me before, but I still struggle to remember the correct way to say 358/2 Days out loud.
@MirrorFate2 I don't despise Banjo-Tooie. It's fine, and as a kid I did (almost) 100% it (curse you, Canary Mary). But it's too bloated; I prefer the simplicity of Banjo 1, where sans Freezeezy Peak/Gobi's Valley you can completely finish each world before moving on to the next (and even that is mitigated by popping into Freezeezy, not collecting anything and only learning Beak Bomb, then going over to Gobi's Valley whilst pretending you were never in Freezeezy to begin with.) To paraphrase a TV show, I see the appeal of Tooie, and I would never take it away from anyone, but I also wouldn't stand in line for it, and Yooka-Laylee is unarguably more of a spiritual successor to Banjo 2 than Banjo 1.
It was Amazing, if for no other fact than he actually came out and said "This wasn't my first choice, Nintendo made me do it, and I told them it was a bad idea", and then the game is actually good!
Having escaped the world of retail a few years ago, after spending FAR more time in it than my life plans initially accounted for, I have a weird love/hate relationship with my memories of that period. I mean, I spent thousands of hours of my life in that store, and they weren't ALL bad. Maybe this game will satisfy the itch for the good times without feeding the trauma of the bad times!
Couldn't have released these a few years ago? The 35th anniversary, perhaps? Sometime before my daughter could finish Donkey Kong Bananza all on her own without her mom's help? No? Fine, then, guess I'm just getting a backpack, a wood block set, and a sense of existential dread.
Japan's over here being the Ducktales to NA/EU's Gargoyles, I see. I'm voting Japan, regardless of its whole 90's Saturday Morning cartoon "every cereal box comes with a One Ring in one of 5 different colors" vibe. At least it's better than the alternative's "found mom's eyeliner and decided to experiment with being edgy" vibe.
"Hi! I'm here to take a look at some b--ches and get a wanko!" "...um...this is an animal shelter..." "Exactly! Oh. And I'd appreciate it of you could point me in the direction of the p--sies while you're at it!"
I'm also glad we didn't get overloaded out of the gate by flashy news toys to play on our flashy new toy. MKW didn't really hold my attention, but in looking for something new to play I attempted to crack the seal on the Yakuza series a third time by buying 0 Director's Cut (I had previously bounced off Kiwami and Like a Dragon). It took this time, and after thoroughly polishing off 0 I've moved onto Kiwami and am LOVING it! That likely wouldn't have happened with something like Bananza screaming "PLAY ME!!" from the corner of the room!
Yes, this is kinda cute, and yes, this is an objectively good thing GameStop is doing. But...I mean, they HAD to fire the person that did the actual stapling, right? All that property damage, all that bad press, there's no way that employee wasn't terminated. Can you imagine having a company turn your mistake into a huge, generous publicity stunt while you stand in the unemployment line? I would be absolutely seething.
I'd love to be wrong, though! I really do hope they still have their job!
The Mega Man series is one of our most important IPs! We're always looking for new adventures for players to take Leon, Jill, and Chris on, and with the upcoming...sorry, did you say, you said Resident Evil, right? Yeah...yeah, guy wearing blue, shoots a gun, that's...that's Leon, right, he...no? It's not a gun? It's his arm? Did you say, here let me write this down, it was, uh, repeat it for me? Mega...Man...okay, got it, let me read that back...okay, yep, it's down here now! Expect a new Monster Hunter coming your way soon!
(Already owns Mega Man 3 in too many forms to count.) (Immediately rushes to download Street Fighter 6 just to play Mega Man 3.) ...I think I have a problem...
I was lucky to have enough money to afford the Mario Kart bundle. It's going to be a minute before my finances recover enough to even THINK about buying any more games, and my next will almost assuredly be Bananza. I imagine I'm not alone on that, either. As much as I'd love to play Cyberpunk and Yakuza, it's just not in the cards right now.
