Still on Xenoblade X and picked up Rendering Ranger: R2. Been waiting ages for the new release on Switch, so finally get to play this game. As a big fan of Turrican and Manfred Trenz's games since the C64, it seems great.
I did play Jeff's games on C64 at the time and continue to do so to this day. Very unusual and very unique, glad Jeff and Giles are still doing what they're doing.
Xenoblade Chronicles X, my copy arrived Friday so had a decent start on the game. I remember buying Chronicles on Wii at lauch and it's great to finally play X as I never had a Wii U. Aside from that will continue with Beyond the Ice Palace 2 or Tomb Raider 3 on Switch, or if I feel like something less involved, some Ridge Racer 2 on PSP / PS4.
This week I charged my old PSP and bought a copy of Ridge Racer 2 as I've been enjoying replaying the game so much on PS4. It still looks great now and is one of the best arcade racers ever. On Switch continuing Tomb Raider 3, and also decided to buy the belated sequel to Boyond the Ice Palace. Liking the game so far, challenging, really nice music and great atmosphere for a retro style game. Not much like the original I played on C64, but that game was 10 mins long if you were good at it.
I did have the original on the C64, got the cassette version for £1.99 at the time. it was hard, but if you were good you could probably finish the game in 20 minutes. This is a strange release, I saw from some clips where the original music is used later in the game, but it doesn't have much resemblance to the original, which to be fair was very simplistic. It looks like a quite good game, but it's a shame it doesn't at least include an emulation of the original (though would need a bit of work to run properly, as would have been 50Hz on the Amiga and the C64 I think). Nice to see some comments from other posters mentioning Elite, reminds me of scanning through cassette tapes in WH Smith in the 80s.
When a Switch port is unfavourable to the PS3 version I played years ago, something has gone wrong. This collection seemed like the minimum was done to Bluepoint's original work to get the games running on modern consoles.
At work today...when not and have some time, back to some classic Tomb Raider. I've completed AoD and Chronicles on the new collection. I'm not sure I enjoy The Last Revelation's open eneded approach as much as the linear levels, so I went back to TR2 and finally completed the game for the first time (despite first playing it on PS1). Moving onto to TR3 next and really enjoying both remastered collections overall, they've really got me back into the classic games.
My other thought is to try to complete Zelda TotK finally, but I always get side tracked with that game.
It's one area Sony is doing better with the PS1 and PSP classics. As they are releasing on PS4 I am getting the newly emulated versions of games I bought years ago on PS3 for 'free' on PS4 as they are on my PSN account, same with PSP games I bought digitally back in the day. The newer PS1 emulations also offer NTSC versions as an option which is even better as a PAL gamer. Thinking about all those Wii VC games I bought forever tied to my old Wii console, it's a shame Nintendo didn't include this kind of option for games previously bought digitally on the VC.
Beyond the Ice Palace 2 is so odd, I played the original on C64 but it doesn't seem to have much of a connection to this new game. They should have included the original as I wouldn't mind revisiting it for nostalgia's sake. The whole game was really short, had good music though.
Completed Tomb Raider: AoD and on to the last couple of levels from Chronicles on the new remastered collection. Glad I finally got to play AoD in a decent state, and looking back realise I prefer the old methodical Tomb Raider games overall to either of the reboots.
Picked up Dead Connection on Switch Arcade Archives which is fun, and might play some more X-Out: Resurfaced or Turrican. Also have a feeling to play though Strèets of Rage if I have time.
I added to the wish list for a sale. Watched some gameplay and looks enjoyable but the starting price is a bit much for me for a single GBA game I've not played before.
I might trade my Lite but keep the OLED, if I cant activate all three on my account. Hopefully Nintendo will take the approach to let you activate Switch 2 as an additional console, but you never know.
Willl be playing some more R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 on PS4. I never played this one at the time as I was a Saturn owner, but the game is great even now. It has such a late 90s feeling and the visual design and music are outstanding. It's up there with SEGA Rally for timeless arcade racing.
On Switch still playing the new Tomb Raider collection, AoD is an interesting historical oddity so good to finally play it, though there are some frame drops in this game on later levels on Switch so hopefully gets a patch.
Also on Switch I picked up X-Out: Resurfaced, I did have the game on my C64 but the tape loading was a pain. I really like this updated version of the game and Chris huelsbeck's excellent music is just as memorable here as in the Turrican games. The fake crack intro at the beginning is a nice touch for oldies who remember them.
I'm enjoying AoD... a few jumps in Hall of Seasons still caused some annoyance but looking at older reviews, it's much improved control wise. I'd never played it but it's good to finally do so in a better state. Weirdly I had it downloaded for pre order and there was day one patch with really improved the game. The initial download had bad frame drops and the rain in Paris looked awful, only realised was patched second time I loaded it up, much better thankfully.
For me it is as good as the first collection, I never properly played TR2 or TR3 as I went from the Saturn original to the other two games on this collection on Dreamcast and never owned a PS1 at the time, so I have nostalgia for these games. I realise the controls are probably challenging for those who started with Legend, and there are certainly high and low points for each game, but I still think Core Design did great things with these titles and as an older fan it's good to have them back on modern consoles.
@Manguy888A Have you tried summoning / jolly cooperation? Always helped me in the Souls games I've completed where I almost felt like giving up. They specialise in making you feel you can't win, and when you finally do, feels like a real achievement. I got a bit lost in Elden Ring as it's so massive compared to Bloodborne and Dark Souls, I must to get back to it at some point.
Finished Stray on Switch which I really liked, the resolution dropped quite low in some scenes in portable, but overall a really great port of the game and first time I've completed it.
I've been playing R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 (PS1) and Ridge Racer 2 (PSP) on PS4. It's actually really good that Sony is making PSN games I purchased digitally PS3 available on PS4 as they become available on the classics catalogue. They are also updating regional 60Hz variants as an option to the PS1 games. Also, thought I'd charge my Vita for the first time in years for some portable Ridge Racer (PSP) and it still works! If only the Switch had a Ridge Racer game.
Lastly finally playing Tomb Raider AoD in the new remastered collection on Switch. Feels like a 'lost' game in some ways to me, so it's great to have it updated and available alongside Last Revelation and Chronicles which I had played on Dreamcast.
I really like the OLED so would pay more for one out of the gate. I play handheld a lot and the difference with the true blacks in games which use darkness is really noticeable compared to my Lite. Having two options at the start would be best, though perhaps unlikely.
I like NSO for the convenience, I quit PS Plus as it's cheaper and I play retro games more anyway. I dont really mind that its a subscription as most actual retro games I want to own physically I have purchased over the years. Hopefully it carries straight over. One thing I have thought about is whether I'll need to deactivate one of my two Switches (I own a Lite and an OLED) in order to 'activate' my NSO and digital games on Switch 2.
Still playing some Daytona USA and Ridge racer 64 when I have some gaming time. Also bought Stray in the current sale on Switch. I did start the game on PS Plus a while back but didn't get too far. Seems like an impressive port. May also try get back into Wizardry on Switch, which I've not played for some time.
Been playing some Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2 on PS3, still as great to play as they ever were. Will also play some more Ridge Racer 64 after the suprise NSO release, the game is new to me as I never owned it and arcade racers remain one of my favourite styles of video games. Also still on my Half-Life 2 replay.
I saw this video a few days ago and it's really taking off. Honestly that's a remarkable oversight for a remake that looks like it ruins the well designed flow of the original, in two player mode at least. Hopefully it can be fixed for fans.
I completd Portal 2 on Switch, first time I played through the game and it's outstanding. Might go back the the Still Alive bonus levels of the first game, but I also feel like replaying Half-Life 2 now as not played it in years. Still enjoying Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 and I might try to finish Moonwallker on the Mega Drive as I finally got around to picking a copy of the game up last week.
Seeing those 'vintage' comments I see familiar names from when I was first on this website, I think was VC Reviews back then or maybe only just Nintendo life. Tried the game earlier and it's an unusual puzzler for sure.
I still think it's a good Switch port, the 30fps feels fine on Sonic Generations to me and the visuals are crisp on the OLED, even though I also have the 60fps PS4 version. Shadow's game is a bit blurry and the framerate feels worst though I've mainly only played the Sonic part of the game. On PS4 Shadow's game is reduced to 30fps, so it's evidently asking more of the Switch. I've certainly played the game more this time than when I had it on PS3.
Working today, but when I'm not been playing some Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged. Picked up in the recent sale on Switch and it's a fun racer. Also finished Portal and working through Portal 2 which is excellent.
Retro picks for this week, bought a copy of Land of Illusion for the Master System which I'd never played before and it's a great little platformer. Also bought Moonwalker for the Mega Drive which is another game I've never got around to.
A nice extra but Shame it's limited to classic Sonic, as the point of that part of Sonic Jam was he was in 3D. Still I really enjoyed the Switch port and the 30fps didn't bother me that much, I also bought the PS4 version but ended up playing more on Switch.
As I've skipped the PS5 after PS4, hopefully this will be my next console purchase as I've built up a large digital Library. I hope the screen options are going to be comparable to the current OLED though.
A great idea, nice one Nintendo Life, will be using this for certain. I also really like the user review option, will be good for some of those smaller titles that have possibly slipped under the radar. I may even post one or two.
Only thing I'd add is the Sea Life places are pretty expensive, though they sometimes have admissions discounts if you are travelling on National Rail, so worth checking if travelling to one for a visit.
I played SOMA on PS4 and while thematically interesting, I didn't find the game that compelling in practice, though I did finish it. Performance was also a bit wobbly and distracted from the atmosphere. The Bunker looked quite interesting, but I do wonder how the visuals will hold up on Switch.
I finally competed Portal last week, on the Switch Companion Collection. Another game I started on PS3 but playing on the Switch that really made me appreciate how outstanding the game is. Started Portal 2, so will be playing some more of that. Also need to finish The Thing Remastered.
In terms retro I think will play some Batman Returns on Game Gear, finished the game a couple of weeks back but need to try the harder difficulty routes on the stages. It's a really good game, similar in style to G.G. Shinobi.
@Slobbert Yeah I agree, I'd rather pay more for an OLED version to begin with. Would feel like a downgrade to have a less vibrant screen, even if the graphics were better. Those true blacks on the OLED really make a difference for the atmosphere in a lot of games.
I don't really mind, once it's properly announced I'll pay attention, just hoping for a screen as good as the current OLED out of the gate (in addition to more great games of course).
Ace Combat 7 on Switch, which I've progressed futher in than I did on PS4. The Switch port has really made me appreciate how good the game is.
The Thing Remastered which is a game I played on its original release in 2002, but it's nice to have the quality of life improvements on Switch, it's certainly less difficult and frustrating to play.
Retro wise, I took a few of my old Mega Drive games down from the loft so may play some Shadowrun, New Zeland Story and Rolling Thunder 2. Also got The Revenge of Shinobi on Vinyl over Christmas so will be 'playing' the soundtrack.
Metroid Prime 4, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 are the ones I'm looking forward to. X always looked interesting but I never did buy a Wii U, CFC 2 has some great games I've not played since the Dreamcast. Also interested to finally play Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness despite its poor reputation and hoping we see The Last Ninja Collection (Though not on this list).
Chase H.Q. would be a great candidate, never had an arcade perfect port as even the Saturn version which I got on import was lacking. I've picked up quite of a few of these, most recently Warrior Blade. As SEGA gave up on their own AGES series, they should licence some of their classics out to Hamster. I'd also like to see Midnight Resistance, or the Mega Drive version on the NSO app would be great too.
Edit: Realised arcade Chase H.Q. did appear on a compilation for PS2 in Japan, but still rare though to make a potential Arcade Archives version a top pick for me.
Ace Combat 7 looks pretty impressive, it's a little blurry portable on the OLED screen, but the game looks really nice on a tv and I prefer the locked 30fps to the unstable 60fps I played on PS4 a few years back. It's a port, but an outstanding one from a visual standpoint.
I got the NES version of Batman at Christmas, so finally getting around to playing it, it's certainly challenging. Also made me revisit Batman Returns on Game Gear which is a really good game.
When not retro gaming I've been playing some Ace Combat 7 on Switch, it's a really good port.
@NintendoWife They did fairly well to improve Blade Runner with patches, including letting you switch back to the original graphics. Was launched in a pretty bad state though.
I do like their remasters generally, might get The Thing when gets released on Switch in Europe at the end of December, I enjoyed the game on Xbox but it was really difficult towards the end.
For me the Switch just has something that seems to be getting forgotten in the push for ever increasing graphical fidelity. It's just a fun video game system to pick up and play. I bought Ace Combat 7 in the recent sale and I've already progressed further than I did when I originally played on PS4. I'm interested to see the Switch Successor and it's great backwards compatibility is confirmed as I've bought a lot of digital games. Has to be one of my favourite consoles ever released at this point, and I started on the Atari 2600.
I like the Mega Drive as part of the NSO, but if they are delisting old games to set up their own subscription that requires yet another account, I'd not be interested.
Just bring back OutRun 2006 and port some of their arcade back catalogue to modern systems.
Some new Switch releases and sale items. I initially rolled the credits on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Prypiat after about 30 hours, so have moved on Shadow of Chernobyl.
I've also started playing Victory Heat Rally which seems quite good and bought Ace Combat 7 and The Karate Kid: Street Rumble in the current sale. Ace Combat compares really well to the PS4 version and The Karate Kid seems a really decent beat 'em up at half the original price.
Still playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, as I mainly have time for gaming the weekend. I also bough Victory Heat Rally in the new releases which seems a fun arcade racer.
Additionally I picked up a copy of Gremlins 2: The New Batch for NES in CeX yesterday, so will be playing that some more. It's a fun little game and I'd never played it before. Great music, but then it is Sunsoft.

@World It is! Was anticipating this release and the recent X-Out: Resurfaced. Great to see these old Rainbow Arts games come back.

Nice looking forward to finally playing this one (never had a Wii U).
Re: Where To Pre-Order Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition On Switch
I've ordered from Argos, £42.99 I think so cheaper than digital. Interested to finally play this one and if it doesn't click can always trade.

I don't really mind, once it's properly announced I'll pay attention, just hoping for a screen as good as the current OLED out of the gate (in addition to more great games of course).
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th January)
Re: Nintendo Highlights Multiple Switch Games Launching In 2025
Metroid Prime 4, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 are the ones I'm looking forward to. X always looked interesting but I never did buy a Wii U, CFC 2 has some great games I've not played since the Dreamcast. Also interested to finally play Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness despite its poor reputation and hoping we see The Last Ninja Collection (Though not on this list).
Re: Hamster Releases Its First Arcade Archives Switch Game Of 2025, Teases A Year Full Of "Surprises"
Chase H.Q. would be a great candidate, never had an arcade perfect port as even the Saturn version which I got on import was lacking.
Re: Feature: 15 Best-Looking Switch Games Of 2024
Ace Combat 7 looks pretty impressive, it's a little blurry portable on the OLED screen, but the game looks really nice on a tv and I prefer the locked 30fps to the unstable 60fps I played on PS4 a few years back. It's a port, but an outstanding one from a visual standpoint.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (New Year Edition)
I got the NES version of Batman at Christmas, so finally getting around to playing it, it's certainly challenging. Also made me revisit Batman Returns on Game Gear which is a really good game.
When not retro gaming I've been playing some Ace Combat 7 on Switch, it's a really good port.
Re: Opinion: Nightdive Studios Had Its Best, Most Prolific Year Yet In 2024
@NintendoWife They did fairly well to improve Blade Runner with patches, including letting you switch back to the original graphics. Was launched in a pretty bad state though.
I do like their remasters generally, might get The Thing when gets released on Switch in Europe at the end of December, I enjoyed the game on Xbox but it was really difficult towards the end.
Re: UK Charts: Nintendo Can Be Proud Of Its Last Christmas Before 'Switch 2'
For me the Switch just has something that seems to be getting forgotten in the push for ever increasing graphical fidelity. It's just a fun video game system to pick up and play. I bought Ace Combat 7 in the recent sale and I've already progressed further than I did when I originally played on PS4. I'm interested to see the Switch Successor and it's great backwards compatibility is confirmed as I've bought a lot of digital games. Has to be one of my favourite consoles ever released at this point, and I started on the Atari 2600.
Re: Sega Is "Evaluating" Its Own Netflix-Style Subscription Service
I like the Mega Drive as part of the NSO, but if they are delisting old games to set up their own subscription that requires yet another account, I'd not be interested.
Just bring back OutRun 2006 and port some of their arcade back catalogue to modern systems.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (Christmas 2024 Edition)
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (14th December)
Re: Nintendo Shares Special Message: "Thank You For Joining Us Now And Into The Future"
The Switch is pretty much the only console I play these days, aside from a few games on my PS4 (not counting retro games).
