Mostly same as last week, Last Ninja Collection on Switch, Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Dragon's Dogma 2 on PS5. Also started Alan Wake 2, not sure it rate I'd as high as some so far, but will keep going to see.
I bought on PS4 and of course it ran way better on PS5, I think there was a native PS5 version I could download for 'free'. Still quite an old school and uncompromising game to get into for me, as someone who never played it before (I was always a console gamer after the 8-bit micros). I'll get back to it at some point on PS5.
@SirVick Yes, most games I played on PS5 had a method to move your save over, but not Lies of P. Was suprised they'd not implemented it, shame as really liked the game but had played so many hours on the PS4.
@SirVick Had that issue with Lies of P on PS4 /PS5, got the PS5 version 'for free' as owned the PS4 game digital, but I'm not ready to start all over again. Always great when you can transfer the save, the RE games do that on PlayStation.
@NoodleWad I did get the update, but not replayed the games. I know from experience Aspyr have made games worst with patches before (Star Wars Battlefront on Switch introduced very noticeable visual glitches with an update). I should have held off on this one by the sounds of it, the original release of the first TR collection was really well done, so dont know why they would mess with it for a few not very interesting outfits.
Working today, but still playing the Last Ninja Collection, completed 2 on C64 and Remix on the Amiga next (on Switch). International Karate on the C64 is also still just as good as it ever was.
Aside from that I bought Dragon's Dogma 2 cheap on PS5 and am really enjoying it, and Tokyo Xtreme Racer which I'll be playing for a while yet, it's great.
Still waiting for a 60fps patch in classic mode. Blimey reading the comments above, I should have stopped this game from updating on Switch. At least I still have my copy for the SEGA Saturn, the true original version of Tomb Raider.
I bought on at PS4 at launch, but the best way to play on consoles seems to be the PS4 version on PS5 (even though I own the PS5 version 'for free', from my digital PS4 purchase), I can accept the lower visual setting for a far more consistent 60fps. From always seem to have issues with their frame pacing at 30fps, remains to see for Switch 2.
I tried the demo on PS5 and was suprised that it didn't look great on the console, particularly as was locked at 30fps. I did have the Wii remake which I thought was OK, the original game I played on the Xbox with the fixed camera angles was one of my favourite horror games at the time. I thought it was much better at creating tension that the Wii remake, and the credits song on the original game was great, perfectly timed to the ending sequence. That Wii remake couldn't really compare and this one feels more like the Wii version and other newer Fatal Frame / Project Zero games to me, from the demo at least.
As the Last Ninja Collection finally released on Switch, playing some C64 Last Ninja, Last Ninja 2, Remix on the Amiga and International Karate on C64. I have a lot of nostalgia for these games and it's great to have them on my OLED.
Over on PS5 be more Tokyo Xtreme Racer and some Shenmue 3 which runs much nicer than it did on my PS4, finally going to try finish the game as I started with the originals on Dreamcast all those years ago.
I was so hyped for... Tokyo Xtreme Racer, as a fan since the Dreamcast games that was my PS5 pre-order for this month and it's great. Will get to Requiem later down the road.
I'll be playing over on PS5 as didn't invest in the Switch 2. Will wait for the hype to fade a bit though and the price to go down a little for the disc version.
@Res462 Some editions seem to add more I think, so cost more? This one is £4.19 in the UK. Part of the reason I went with the PS5 recently was I realised I owned quite a few native PS5 games that came 'for free' with the digital PS4 versions. Not all, but most, only Wreckfest was paid for for an update from the games I owned, and some were PS4 versions which were just boosted, like Need for Speed: Hot Persuit which has the 60fps mode enabled. I did like this game though on the OLED.
I do feel they are overpricing here, it feels like this should be free. I dont have a Switch 2, but it's things like this along with the overall lofty prices that have put me off getting one. I did buy this one at launch on Switch 1. I think I read the 60fps code was discovered to be already present in the game. If they are charging, they need to do better than this.
I've actually never finished 8, I got to a very action heavy bit later on and I've just not gone back to it. Its the one RE I've not completed this point, even though I played it at release.
Was a pretty good 60fps when I played on PS4. Recently I bought it digitally on sale on PS5 so playing again there, it's still good but forgot how off some of the first person boss fights can feel. The remakes got me used to playing in third person I think. Was a great reinvention of the series at the time after Revelations 2.
Such a high cost of entry, to rent games and be left with an empty shell, a plastic replica and then without an original controller. Even if I'd picked up a Switch 2, this would be an definitive no from me.
The problem with their virtual console was initially the lack of an account, so your games were 'stuck' to your single console (and the PAL 50hz games were very disappointing). Then they wanted more money to buy them again on your subsequent Nintendo consoles. As newly emulated PS1 classics and PSP games are released on PS5, I've got a lot of titles 'for free' where I owned them digitally on PS3 or PSP. That should be the standard. The current NSO approach of not selling them digitally at all, and additionally locking them behind a sub, is far from ideal.
With this if you are asking people to buy a plastic replica for that much money, I think the games should be their's to keep. I never owned one at the time, never even saw one in person though looked interesting in the magazines.
I already think it costs too much, so wont be buying one. Managed to get the digital PS5 for £290 before Christmas in Argos so will be playing more demanding console games there, and indies or retro collections on my OLED.
Racing games are a favourite genre of mine, partly why I went PS5 over Switch 2. The adaptive triggers on the PS5 are an interesting way to play racing games with a control pad if well implemented, though I like you can also turn them off. I still find it weird Switch 2 omitted them. It's not just racing games, it's almost any game with a driving or acceleration component. I tried a few racers like WCR on switch 1, and even where you could move acceleration to the right stick, was less than optimal. My favourite Switch 1 racer works very well on that console though, Slip Stream.
Having to travel a bit this weekend, so brought my good old 2DS XL. Be playing some Super Mario Land (still one of my favourite Mario games), Balloon Kid, G.G. Shinobi, Streets of Rage. I think I prefered when you could digitally purchase retro games to the NSO. Also OutRun, of course.
At the moment its at it's 'special offer' price of £390 in Argos in the UK, plus £65 for the pro controller for that console experience, and that's with no game. We are a long way from Nintendo as cheaper and innovative ideas option days of the Wii. These prices are already probably way too expensive for a lot of people, let alone putting them up.
Ah yes I did buy and replay RE when it was released on DS, my first playthrough was on Saturn not PlayStation. Nice little version to play with headphones at the time.
Started replaying the PS4 remake of MediEvil on PS5, I think it's still a great remake of a fun game and nice to play with a locked 60fps framerate, as PS4 struggled when I first played it there a few years back. Also been going back to Need for Speed: Hot Persuit with the remastered version, which in an age of open world racers feels like a refreshing call back to playing Burnout on the GameCube. Will also continue with some Elden Ring if I have time.
I'm not buying one for the foreseeable future, the PS5 digital got down to less than £300 over Christmas, significantly cheaper than Switch 2, so I finally upgraded my PS4 instead. Already had lots of free upgrades and PS5 versions included with my PS4 digital purchases, and can always buy a disc drive down the line. Switch 2 just wasn't good enough value to me in comparison, so will just be keeping my OLED for indy games.
Back to some Elden Ring, Star Wars Outlaws and Robocop on PS5. Retro wise, probably some SEGA Rally on Saturn, maybe some Revenge of Shinobi on the Mega Drive.
Part of the reason that I bought a PS5, looking forward to this one, was slightly less keen on RE4 remake but hopefully this one be more on the survival horror side. Been playing the series since the first one (on Saturn for me).
@SuperEndriu I'll give it a try at some point, certainly the soundtrack seems good and the design of the world still looks outstanding in some areas, though quite inconsistent. I remember getting the first Prime on the GameCube and even though I'd not played if for years, Remastered proved it held up as great a game as it ever was.
Prime 4 for me went from highly anticipated, to a potential second hand purchase down the road. From what I've seen of the game the hand holding, quippy dialogue, and linear yet long winded design have all dampened my enthusiasm. I really liked the first two games, the third a bit less so. Replayed Prime Remastered and was still excellent, but Prime 4 looks disappointing, to me at least. It's probably done best on Switch 2 as I heard you can use the cartridge on Switch 1, so sensible to get the '2' version.
As I finally bought a PS5, I've been playing a couple of 'current gen' games I'd wanted to try, Robocop: Rogue City and Star Wars Outlaws. Both quite good so far, but Elden Ring has also pulled me back in as the PS4 version at 60fps is so much more playable. Aside from those modern games, going to play some Road Rash on the Mega Drive.
'The Invaders... A Quinn Martin Production!' On no, that's a different one. I have the Space Invaders collection on Switch so suppose I am covered here, but a good one for them to commemorate in the excellent Arcade Archives series, I've bought quite a few and am sure more I'm interested in will be forthcoming. Great that Hamster do this and unusual titles like Kangeroo, which I played on the 2600 originally, are just not games you'd see rereleased anywhere else.
I had a PS3, a DS, 3DS and a Wii, a PS4 and a Switch. Just bought a PS5 but won't be also buying a Switch 2, the combination just costs too much for me at present. It's a point where the value proposition to have access to Nintendo's games may have to skip a generation as I did with Wii U. Plus the unique qualities the DS and 3DS are rather lost post Switch, so 3rd party games are typically just less proficient versions of PS5 / PC games, the bonus being seamless portability. I'll certainly still be using my OLED for games like Terminator T2D and The Last Ninja Collection where nothing is lost in the Switch port, so still be buying those games there.
Didn't realise it was Saturday! I bought a digital PS5 over Christmas as the price finally dropped enough for me, plus I have a large library of digital games and 'free' PS5 updates to try so wont need to buy any games for a while. Downloaded Dirt 5, Hot Wheels Unleashed and the RE 2 and 3 remakes to start.
Retro-wise I got Road Rash and Streets of Rage 2 on the Mega Drive as gifts, not played in while so shall give them a go. Over on Switch probably play some more Terminator 2D: No Fate, working my way up the difficulty settings.
I feel that with these big budget games, studios are so concered about chasing mass market success they opt for increasingly homogenised game design in an effort to appeal to everyone, and often instead end up half baked and alienating a lot of the original fans of an established series, so having less appeal overall.
RE6 always struck me as that kind of game typififed, it wanted to be everything to everyone, chased 3rd person shooter trends and ended up a bit of a mess (though I still found some parts of the game to enjoy). Open worlds feel like that now. Having said that, I've not played Metroid Prime 4 yet but from what I have seen, the attempts to bring other popular design elements into the game don't really enhance what was great about the original Prime. Still intend to play the game when I have a chance as I really liked the first two games.
I felt similarly about Arkham Asylum, it was small and perfectly designed. City still kept it together and expanded on the original but Knight for me was less enjoyable, I ended up enjoying the more restrained Origins more despite the big 'next gen' game coming out around the same time.
My main gaming Christmas memories are The Hollywood Pack for the C64 (Platoon mainly, amazing music) and getting Streets of Rage for the Mega Drive. Think I woke everyone else in the house up with SoR as had the volume up so high, great tunes. Might play them today, will see how it goes, Happy Christmas!
This weekend be likely playing some Terminator 2D: No Fate on Switch, Neon Inferno and Dirt 5 on PS4, Home Alone and OutRun on the Mega Drive, and SEGA Rally and OutRun on the Saturn. Maybe I'll also play some Christmas Nights on Saturn, tis the season afterall.
PS4 performance was quite disappointing too, I picked the game up there a while back and didn't seem to be a stable 30fps, not sure if was uncapped but was very distracting playing the game. I was wondering how it would even work on Switch one, as PS4 was struggling.
@DennyCrane Yes, there was a certain coldness to some stages, but overall a great game. If only Namco had gone with that Switch version could have been the best racer on the platform, Ridge Racer doesn't even need analog triggers.
Well they should, stop passing on the storage cost and put the game on the cartridge would be preferable for me. I hear the speed problem, which only really should apply to big budget open world games with lots of streaming, if is the case.
@DennyCrane yep, or have an option. I remember some PS3 games let you install to improve performance from the disc alone.
To be honest, this generation has priced me out. I'm not willing to pay these prices for video games, and the PS5 and Switch 2 I don't see myself purchasing for some time for what they offer. PS4 is excellent value at the moment though, and the games still look pretty great to me, still playing my OLED too. Also going back to retro on the Mega Drive and Saturn as I have good collections of games there. I started with the Atari and C64, so first generation I've probably skipped, or at least I might just get to current gen when its last gen.
Honestly, I'd beware some of their updates, I recall they made Star Wars Battlefront on Switch worst. Introduced framerate issues and glitches in textures not present at launch. I've not downloaded in ages to see if they fixed their 'fixes'. I found this one OK on my OLED to be honest, not quite finished the game but acceptable version and fun to play as I'd not replayed since PS3.

Think I woke everyone else in the house up with SoR as had the volume up so high, great tunes. Might play them today, will see how it goes, Happy Christmas!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th December)
Re: Review: System Shock (Switch 2) - Performance Woes Tarnish A Classic
PS4 performance was quite disappointing too, I picked the game up there a while back and didn't seem to be a stable 30fps, not sure if was uncapped but was very distracting playing the game. I was wondering how it would even work on Switch one, as PS4 was struggling.
Re: Rumour: A Game-Key Card Alternative? Nintendo May Have Smaller Switch 2 Carts In The Works
@DennyCrane Yes, there was a certain coldness to some stages, but overall a great game. If only Namco had gone with that Switch version could have been the best racer on the platform, Ridge Racer doesn't even need analog triggers.
Re: Rumour: A Game-Key Card Alternative? Nintendo May Have Smaller Switch 2 Carts In The Works
@DennyCrane That's right, one of my favourite games, Ridge Racer 7 had the option.
Re: Rumour: A Game-Key Card Alternative? Nintendo May Have Smaller Switch 2 Carts In The Works
Re: The US Suffered Its Worst November Since 1995 In Terms Of Hardware Sales
To be honest, this generation has priced me out. I'm not willing to pay these prices for video games, and the PS5 and Switch 2 I don't see myself purchasing for some time for what they offer. PS4 is excellent value at the moment though, and the games still look pretty great to me, still playing my OLED too. Also going back to retro on the Mega Drive and Saturn as I have good collections of games there. I started with the Atari and C64, so first generation I've probably skipped, or at least I might just get to current gen when its last gen.
Re: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Updates Planned For Switch Platforms
Honestly, I'd beware some of their updates, I recall they made Star Wars Battlefront on Switch worst. Introduced framerate issues and glitches in textures not present at launch. I've not downloaded in ages to see if they fixed their 'fixes'. I found this one OK on my OLED to be honest, not quite finished the game but acceptable version and fun to play as I'd not replayed since PS3.
