To my eyes, the classic mode now looks like it matches the 60fps of the modern graphics, I think... Edit: I had another look at classic mode this morning and I think it does actually still run at a lower 30fps framerate, but it feels smoother than at launch when switching between the two modes.
Will get back to the games, was half way through the second after completing the first.
Ha, I just realised I'd commented on the original Wii review on this site in 2010...was a unusual but enjoyable game if I recall. If performance is good I'd be interested to replay on Switch. I played the sequel on PS3 too.
When not at work, I'm hoping to fit in some time gaming. I rolled the credits on Uforia the Saga 2 on Switch, so picked up HEBEREKE Enjoy Edition which I'd never played but seems fun. Also recently picked up a copy of Lotus 2 R.E.C.S for the Mega Drive and while it's not up to the Amiga version standard in sounds or graphics, it feels more responsive to play so still a decent retro racer. Quite challenging too.
Travelling today, but if I have time may play some Star Wars Battlefront (now I can invert Y) and also bought the Alwa's collection in CEX so started playing the first game.
I think I had this on my 'Ambassador' 3DS, I never really played it though. It's not my top choice for GBA but I guess its a good game if you enjoy the series. To be honest I mainly want Mario Land GB at this point, it feels like Nintendo are purposefully avoiding adding it, which is odd.
I did buy it thinking the Y-axis inversion issue had been updated, but it hasn't yet... Despite all the issues I've still enjoyed the space battles in Battlefront 2. Dog fighting in a TIE interceptor is something I could play endlessly for some weird nostalgic reason. Once the Y-axis invertion option is patched for ground battles, I'm sure I'll have some fun with the game at least in single player. Endor in Battlefront 2 runs very poorly though. Might go test my original Xbox version to see how it compares at some point.
@-wc- I actually went back to the game after this article and managed to beat the boss I'd been stuck on a year or more ago, in a couple of attempts... OK, so I may continue with the game.
I also bough the game a couple of years ago, but got stuck on a particularly challenging flying foe and stopped playing. I might go back to the game at some point, I thought was a decent port and I really liked the night time aspect.
Might get back to Tomb Raider 2 in the Remastered collection. Also possibly play some retro games, Castle of Illusion or still playing Top Racer (Top Gear) 2 on Switch, and Lotus 3 on the Amiga which I started last weekend. Not had much gamig time in the week at all, so picking up where I left off last weekend.
Very little gaming time this weekend as busy, but enjoying Top Racer 2 on Switch in the recent collection encouraged me to go back and play Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge on the Amiga. It's a great retro racing game, just a shame you cant have music and sfx at the same time.
@MirrorFate2 Found myself asking that too. There was a Eurogamer article, seems Saber had the developer behind OpenLara as lead on Tomb Raider Remastered. So the lead developer was effectively a super fan of the series, and that really shows in the finished product.
I'll certainly stay away from this, at least until the option to invert the Y axis is added and probably for a sale, it seems quite expensive.
@Grumblevolcano I noticed that too, for a minute I thought was also running at 60fps, it's certainly smoother either way in classic mode.
Photo mode has some changes too, you can move Lara about independently in photo mode. Photo mode is actually a really interesting feature that's helped me with some of the more cryptic sections of the two games I've not previously completed, as you can scope levels out without having to walk everywhere.
I tried the demo and it seemed rough. Oh well, at least I still have my copy of Contra 4, though I had to import that at the time as it never had an EU release.
Just here to also say why still no Super Mario Land? It's one of my favourite games in the series and a defining Game Boy game, I still play through it every so often.
Working today but should have some time for the Top Racer Collection and the Tomb Raider Collection. I'd not really played Top Gear / Racer previously, but I do like them. The first one reminds me of Pitstop 2 on the C64, though I realise it's most closely related to Lotus Turbo Challenge. Fun retro racing.
I'm still working through Tomb Raider 2 which I'd never completed in it's original form, though I did finish the first game on the Saturn and initially played through the game again on this new collection. The tank controls seem old fashioned, but they are so precise it's been fun getting back into playing these games.
@-wc- I agree, an unstable framerate in a racer can really have an impact. The Dreamcast port of SEGA Rally 2 always comes to mind. It was slightly less of a problem in Road Redemption on Switch, as the game is chaotic anyway. In a technical or arcade racer though, this is a disappointment.
I never played these at the time, but seems the Lotus games ran smoother, certainly on the Amiga. I have one of these (the first one) on the Evercade and it did seem pretty jerky there, I'd not played SNES sequels so was hoping they'd be better. Scaling is always a problem and scanline filters are hit and miss... can you remove the artwork on the boarders though? I'd always rather just have a black screen to the sides with retro games.
Finished the first Tomb Raider in the new Remastered collection, so many Saturn memories of returning to those virtual spaces I played though so long ago. Started on Tomb Raider 2 which I never played properly (I did have the PS1 version on PS3 but never finished it). This collection is really great overall, once I adjusted back to using the classic control scheme.
Picked up two new releases on Switch, Dark Forces and Ufouria: the Saga 2 so will be playing those.
I downloaded it, bit improved, gliding is smoother I think and overall textures seemed to load in more than they used to, though the framerate still drops. The Batmobile can still turn into a slide show while speeding around the streets, which no doubt impacts gameplay, and the game also crashed on me within about 20 mins. So, I can see they have tried, but I cant see it ever being considered a good way to play this game.
The Digital Foundry video is worth the watch, the original running at 70fps and the game's speed tied to this creating some uneven frames at 60Hz is interesting. Now, I'd only played the PAL PS1 version at 50Hz with a super low framerate, so the Switch port plays comparatively very smoothly to me. I can tell the music is slightly off, but this still the best and easiest way for me to play the game at the moment.
Been replaying the original Tomb Raider in the new collection, just as challenging as I remembered.
Also came across Nightdive's release of Strife: Veteran edition on Switch, as I was browsing what else they had published while waiting for Dark Forces Remastered, and what a unusual and innovative fps game it must have been at the time.
Seeing Endless Ocean return was great, I really enjoyed both Wii titles. I'm also interested to see how Epic Mickey performs on Switch as it's multiplatform. I did own the Wii version and played the sequel on PS3. Flawed but interesting games in my opinion.
@PKDuckman I'll also be approaching with caution. Regretted purchasing Jedi Academy as frame rate was all over the place. Thankfully I'd bought it physical, so could sell it. I thought with Tomb Raider maybe Aspyr had improved, as the ports there are really well done. I then read on Eurogamer that the Tomb Raider project was exceptional, as Saber Interactive recruited the modder behind OpenLara to head up development. Will definitely wait and see on this one.
Well, would be an alternative to Bert Weedon's Play in a Day! When I was first learning was some books from the local Library and that was about it, well, maybe a VHS tutorial guide if you were lucky ha. This looks really well thought out, they should give it an international release.
The Switch is still putting out games I want to play.... next on the wish list is Dark Forces Remastered, past month I've played Legend of Grimrock and Alisa which are the kinds of games I enjoy.
When I look at current gen consoles, there's little I care about that I can't play on my PS4, except maybe the Robocop game looked good. A Metroid Prime 2 Remaster would be great as I never did finish that game, or 4 if it ever arrives!
I ended up buying Tomb Raider Remastered so replaying it for the first time since the Saturn... I've forgotten a lot of the platforming solutions! Still playing Alisa Developer's Cut and have dug through my retro collection for games and come up with Batman Returns on Game Game and (the very early 90s) Skitchin' on Mega Drive, it's still a fun alternative to Road Rash. The Mega Drive's attempt at chugging 90s guitar for the soundtrack is also pretty good.
So in the end Aspyr have done well, certainly better than Jedi Academy with it's framrate issues. Part of me wants to revisit the original which I first played on Saturn. I'm playing Alisa at the moment where saving is going to a specific room and spending resources, so saving here would not bother me. I don't really like auto saves, I like to save when I consider most optimal if I have an option.
I'm a little cautious with this after Aspyr's Jedi Academy, which has a framerate that is all over the place on Switch. If it consistently performs well, I'd consider in a sale. I completed the original on the Saturn (still have my copy) but never got through the other two, as no PS1. I purchased TR2 on PS3 but never completed it, very challenging game to approach years later. I did play TR3 on a friends PS1at time, as a Londoner, I liked that it had a level on the tube.
That's a shame, I bought Superstars day one and it's probably the best 3D rendered representation of 2D Sonic I've played. My only real issues were some inconsistent music quality, and bosses which broke the pacing. The multiplayer I also hear was underwhelming, but I didn't touch it.
Couldn't find my copy of Master System Sonic 2, but found a replacement in a retro shop, so playing that. Also some G.G. Shinobi.
Over on Switch picked up Alisa Developer' Cut. I've found it reallly challenging at the start despite having played classic survival horror back in the day, but made some progress. Still think the game should let you use the d-pad for tank controls, but the 8bitdo controller has the analogue/ d-pad swap function at least, so that's one way. Still playing Grimrock too, think I am at about level 9 of the dungeon.
The tank controls suit the fixed camera, I find the 'modern' controls less intuitive here as when the perspective switches, your characters pivots to an alternate direction. I feel the d-pad should be utilised for the tank option though, it feels wrong with an analogue stick. If you have something like th 8bitdo M30, you can map the analogue to the d-pad and the game feels like playing Resident Evil on the Saturn.
I like this style of game and what the developer has gone for here. For me it has a real sense of the uncanny about it, and the call back to 90s survival horror aesthetic and design works in it's favour to add to that atmosphere.
Still playing Grimrock on Switch which is great for fans of the dungeon crawler genre, and some more Tears of the Kingdom. Still not finished TotK and even after 145 hours plus, I seem to discover something new every time I come back to it.
Except for that, playing a few retro games, I picked up Robocop Vs. Terminator for the Mega Drive recently (which I'd never played) and it's a fun platform shooter. It's really reminiscent of arcade games of that era.
I could never get behind the Sonic 3 main sprite. I think it also came out at a time where I was leaving games behind (before coming back with the Saturn), so I only played it years later, on Sonic Jam initially. To me, it's my least favourite of the Mega Drive games but I don't really know why. I just prefer the music and graphics in the first two games I think.
@JohnnyMind ha yes, the final boss of Sonic 2 is a little annoying, you can almost cheat the first section getting 3-4 hits in a row, but the second is all about patience. No rings, so if you're hit you start over. Getting all the chaos emeralds legitimately is also really challenging, you pretty much need a 2nd player in the later bonus stages to get enough rings (or just try to control Sonic and Tails with two controllers at once)!
With Generations, If Switch is 60fps, will get that version. Switch is my platform of choice but occasionally if it can't quite make the graphics of a game work, I go with PS4 at least. Dont have a PS5 as I really do enjoy portable play a lot.
On the subject of bosses, on reflection, even Eggman in Sonic 2 is a pain... beating the (not Metal Sonic) Metal Sonic with no rings was easy enough as you can bounce on him a several times in a row if you time it right, but beating the Eggman's robot was more a test of patience. I like Superstars a lot, but Sonic final bosses never seem to be much fun after the first game, and I say that as a fan since '91. Nice to get another free dlc character for Superstars. Generation's on Switch is good and I found it a fun if not outstanding game on PS3, but if its 30fps on Switch and PS4 is 60fps, I'll go for PS4 at least as I don't own a PS5.
I initially bough a Lite. It pretty much led me to buy an OLED as I realised it had become my main gaming device! This is a neat mod, bringing it up to something more like the original Vita.
I liked Generations on PS3, the 3DS version was also interesting as was it's own thing. To be honest I'd want a port to be 60fps to improve upon the PS3 experience, so most likely you'd start with PS4 at that framerate if SEGA include previous gen consoles. A Switch port at 60fps would be great, if they could do it.
Still playing Legend of Grimrock, but taking some time out to play the Arcade Archives release of Rainbow Islands and picked up the new Switch version of Hitman: Blood Money. The alternative music in Rainbow Islands takes a bit of getting used to, but the game is as fun as ever. I've not played much of the Hitman series, but it reminds me of something like Ocean's The Great Escape which I played on the C64 way back when, even if the objective is quite different. I've encountered some proper UI glitches though, so hopefully Feral have a patch planned.
Legend of Grimrock, the announcement for Switch was such a nice suprise and it plays great. I've meant to play the game for years as I have a lot of nostalgia for Dungeon Master, which my friend had for his Atari ST back in the day. I found the game so atmospheric. Really enjoying Grimrock so far, it's a great update to the Dungeon Master style. The lightning also looks really nice on the OLED portable.
Tomb Raider is grid based, so the controls were digital, I wonder how the 'modern' controls will work. I only ever completed the first game on the Saturn and it was quite a challenge, I have played 2 and 3 on PlayStation years later, but I never finished them. The Saturn original really impressed me at the time. I'm not sure these are games I'd want to revsit these days, even with the graphical updates.

Generation's on Switch is good and I found it a fun if not outstanding game on PS3, but if its 30fps on Switch and PS4 is 60fps, I'll go for PS4 at least as I don't own a PS5.
Re: Random: Handheld Specialist Creates Prototype 'Switch Lite OLED' Mod
I initially bough a Lite. It pretty much led me to buy an OLED as I realised it had become my main gaming device! This is a neat mod, bringing it up to something more like the original Vita.
Re: Community: What's The Best Switch eShop Game We Missed? (January 2024)
@drspaceman0 I agree, Grimrock is great and a great port.
Re: Rumour: Sonic Generations To Be Featured At PlayStation's State Of Play
I liked Generations on PS3, the 3DS version was also interesting as was it's own thing. To be honest I'd want a port to be 60fps to improve upon the PS3 experience, so most likely you'd start with PS4 at that framerate if SEGA include previous gen consoles. A Switch port at 60fps would be great, if they could do it.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 27th)
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 20th)
Re: New Star GP's Retro Racing Speeds Onto Switch This March
I'd not seen this one before, but a new arcade racer always has my interest.
Re: Aspyr Finally Reveals More Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Details
Tomb Raider is grid based, so the controls were digital, I wonder how the 'modern' controls will work. I only ever completed the first game on the Saturn and it was quite a challenge, I have played 2 and 3 on PlayStation years later, but I never finished them. The Saturn original really impressed me at the time. I'm not sure these are games I'd want to revsit these days, even with the graphical updates.
