Still playing Super Mario Wonder and Sonic Superstars. I also picked up Ghostbusters Unleashed on Switch and despite the framerate dropping pretty bad at times, it's fun to play.
Edit: Unleashed seems to have just reset all my upgraded gear to level 1, so seems to have a few glitches.
Go SEGA and try the Mega Drive game, it' quite good! The 2009 remaster is the best for me of those I've played, I played it first on PS3, followed by the Wii version. The NES version isn't as good as the C64 version in my opinion, which is the one I played back in the 80s.
I ended up buying Wonder after Sonic, though originally intended to wait! I really like the game (and Sonic's latest), the little animation touches add a lot of personality that was slightly missing in the 'New' series.
@Olliemar28 Ah, good to know, thanks for the confirmation! MGS for PS1 I am sure could still be much better presented than what I've seen, but at least they have the NA version as an option. Still looks like pretty basic PS1 emulation, image quality wise, hopefully Digital Foundry cover it.
Can anyone confirm if MGS for PS1 is the PAL version for the PAL release of this collection, if so and is running at 60Hz, the frame pacing will be off even at 30fps.
@Paulo I only played SML 2 years later, I appreciate it's ambition, but the zoomed in graphics and slowdown make it a bit over ambitious for me. The original was perfectly designed to work on the GB, simple, stylised graphics and the music is so memorable. I can play through SML almost on auto pilot, and I still enjoy the game! I also hope they add Solar Striker and Balloon Kid, the current GB selection would really benefit to showcase those early games.
I had a Master System (and a C64) instead of the NES, so the GB is the Nintendo system I have most nostagia for.
@Paulo The absence of Super Mario Land puzzles me, it's really iconic for the GB and I actually prefer it to the sequel. I didn't have a NES so it's Mario Land I have most nostalgia for. At least I bought the VC version for the 3DS when I could.
I think someone on here (or Push Square) mentioned the PS1 emulation is possibly the PAL 50Hz game presented within a 60Hz container (for the PAL release of the collection)... if so, then that will be the PS Classic all over again and an exceptionally poor way to present the first game.
I did have the PS3 collection and the 30fps in Switch is also disappointing on the sequels. Will wait for a full analysis, maybe Digital Foundry will pick it up.
It's good, one of the best Sonics of recent years for me. Performance has the occasional Switch issue, but overall I like the game a lot and the new visual style is a nice change to Mania. At times even reminds me of what I enjoyed about the Master System games. I hope SEGA keep doing this as a side series.
@samuelvictor Yes, I think Jun Senoue is composer (or co composer) of the Frozen Junkyard track in Team Sonic Racing, which is great. I definitely feel it's something of the arrangement and instrumentation here, but it doesn't quite match the other aspects of the game for me. The SEGA blue skys are there, but the music feels slightly lacking.
Overall though, I think the game seems great and I really enjoy the call backs to the 8 and 16 bit titles. I know some have complained about the slower pace, but I like that as reminds me of Sonic 1 and the Master System games. I'm wanting to replay and explore the levels rather than speed through them in a linear path.
@samuelvictor I've got around to playing some of the game now and like yourself, I'm really enjoying the game, it does feel like a true succession to the classics. The music is a little disappointing to me though, it reminds me of Sonic 4 and feels a bit repetitive. A couple of the tunes have stood out at least.
Sounds great, I was waiting on actual reviews and hands on impressions of the Switch version as was concerned about possible poor performance, but will pick this one up!
@samuelvictor Yeah, I'll be picking up Sonic before Mario, the nostalgia is strong for me. I appreciate the enthusiasm, ha, I pretty much buy and play every Sonic game that comes out and as you say some are better than others. Either way, Sonic is still one of my favouite video games, particularly the original Mega Drive and 8-bit versions and I'm always interested to see the next game arrive, even now, 30 or more years later. Will post once I have a chance to play it and share my views!
@samuelvictor Your enthusiasm certainly comes through! I'll most likey buy it digitally on Switch as my only other option is PS4, am just glad it sounds like the game runs well portable as well as docked. I'll most likely contribute some views once I've played it, but good to hear it sounds like long time fans of the classics will enjoy it.
@Woderwick Ah yes, getting stuck before the internet was really something. My friend had Knightmare on the Amstrad, we got about as far as you did at the time, great tv show though.
@Woderwick Yeah, the Robocop theme is great, though as a C64 owner I had the broken version Ocean put out (the time limit was made too short on one stage, as the following stage was glitched and unplayable). I'd saved up and bought the big box version when it was new too, Ocean saw me coming I guess. The Spectrum certainly won out there!
I had the 2009 game on PS3, replayed on Switch, it's still good though a bit unfinished compared to some of the footage out there, the famous lost 'Parade' level could have been great!
@Woderwick I had the C64 version, was a strange but engaging game. Ghostbusters 2 was sadly less fun, even though it tried an 'Ocean' approach to movie licences with a number of differently playing levels.
The 2009 (can't believe it's that old already) game was fun, I also liked the Wii version which was a nice alternative to the HD release.
Not quite this weekend, but I played Beyond a Steel Sky late last week on Switch and thought it was a great game. I'd seen videos which mentioned visual pop in which seemed pretty much fixed by patches since review.
This weekend will continue my playthrough of Super Castlevania IV and Doom Eternal on Switch if I have some time.
@samuelvictor Ah, glad you remember Turbo, it was pretty good! I actually like Marble Zone and even Labyrinth Zone, the changes of pace are something I enjoy replaying the game and the music is all good. I'd maybe dust off the PS4 and boot up Frontiers again after downloading the patches, thanks for the heads up!
@samuelvictor Yep, I remember playing the Mega Drive version on a demo unit in Index the Catalogue Shop in the early 90s and entering the cheat code to see the other zones...
Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive is almost still my favourite, maybe its just nostalgia, but I actually liked the run speed limiter in the first game (which you can toggle with a cheat in origins) as I felt they designed the slower paced platforming sections with that in mind. The Master System games had a similar set up. I got Sonic 2 pretty much at release, and immediately noticed the slight physics change where you didn't need to roll to keep building forward speed, but could just run. I'd usually end up running into a badnik or off a ledge! There have been some bad Sonic 1 ports, the GBA gets attention but Dreamcast Smash Pack Vol.1 is joke emulation and the DS versions cropped the edges of the screen. I think Origins has been patched into a good compilation at this point, and it really excels for low latency.
I think with Frontiers, I was limited to the PS4 version, so in part it was the irregular frame pacing at 30fps that was putting me off. I should download the latest patches and see if it's improved at some point, or otherwise wait until I possibly get a PS5 at some point to play it.
Now, does anyone remember 'Turbo the Tortoise' on the C64, sadly, he got no sequels...
@samuelvictor I'm also a mid 40s Sonic fan I suppose, ha, still have my original Master System, Game Gear and Mega Drive carts, plus obscure stuff like the Japanese version of Gems on the GameCube which I imported specifically at the time as I figued they would add the US version of CD to the PAL version with the US soundtrack. Stuck with SEGA throughout the Saturn era with Sonic R, enjoyed Adventure 1 and 2 on Dreamcast despite its issues. Played the later games on Wii and PS3, including the disappointment of Sonic 4, along it's quite a lot better episode 2 (what happened to episode 3, it had potential). I liked Mania, less impressed with Frontiers. Looking forward to this new game, though if the performance is poor on Switch, I might need to go for PS4 at least.
@Woderwick Yes, thanks for the memory lane trip kicked off by Roland Rat... Also noticed you mentioned Undernauts there, been meaning to try that game as I am a fan of grid based dungeon crawlers, ever since I played Dungeon Master on a friends Atari ST. Will add that one back to my Switch wish list.
Had to work so far... hopefully though will have time this evening to play some Super Castlevania IV. Just bought a 8BitDo M30 controller, so going to test out some other retro games via Switch Online.
@samuelvictor Ah yeah, TVAM I remember well, and Timmy Mallett on Saturday mornings and school holidays, Transformers was first shown (I think) in the UK on Wide Awake Club, or Wacaday, can't remember which now!
@samuelvictor ha, I have the 'Just Say No' 7 inch vinyl release, it's not a bad tune... no Rat Rapping, but still. Zammo owned a locksmith for a while I think. Yep, 'we may not be the young ones, very long', how true it was!
Now, if Star Fox had this stuff, would truely confound!
@Woderwick Ah Roland rat, along with Roland from Grange Hill, the two Rolands of the 80s that immediately jump to mind. Suddenly also remembering the horror of having a tape you really liked get chewed up in a stereo...
I remember seeing the screen shots with the city in 'Total' magazine I think, I never owned a NES, but I liked the games basic but distinct look. Noticed in the eShop listing the Japanese version has a different main sprite, which I never knew. I think I borrowed the GB version once, did play the newer game on Wii and have the Switch port, not sure if I ever finished it. Still not played the NES game, but I believe it really benefits from a guide. Might pick this one up.
The PS4 version of Akham City is still a mess, framerate wise. I'm not confident they'll optimise these releases as they never bothered to fix them on PS4, though I see a poster above says the Switch release is based on the original rather than the 'return' versions, so here's hoping. Decided to give Double Dragon Gaiden a go and I quite like the game. Some graphical elements and the specific gangs remind me of The Combatribes and Renegade. Feels like the frame rate drops a bit on Switch, but will be trying another play through to see further into the other stages.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Mortal Kombat 1 On Switch
