I've recently heard there are some concerns about DK and Metroid Prime 4 causing motion sickness. Along with MKW these are the only games I'm interested in, so I'm waiting for the first adopters to be guinea pigs before I commit to anything.
I don’t ‘need’ to make changes, I just have a perception of value where I’m not going to waste money just for the sake of it. A £70 game is a year of Netflix or Disney or a guitar pedal or a lot of other things that give me more value than a video game.
I remember when the Wii U released with Assassin’s Creed, COD, Mass Effect, Arkham City, Darksiders 2 and Zombi U…
…And Nintendo fans in general didn’t care.
That’s what worries me most about the Switch 2. That Nintendo believes they can fill the Nintendo shaped gaps with old ports of western shooty games. It’s never really worked in the past.
I always find these bundles odd. They are obviously aimed at Star Wars fans, but you would assume most Star Wars fans would at least own some of these games already which sort of lessens the discount- especially when the individual games are on sale as well.
Yeah, Microsoft could get Rare make another Banjo Kazooie, but wouldn’t you all prefer Rare to keep making Sea Of Thieves microtransactions until the end of time?
The reasons to buy a physical version for me is to:
-Preserve the physical game. -Avoid downloading the game over my ropey internet. -Save money with UK retailers. -Saving space on the hard drive or a memory card that will also be expensive.
Platinum have made some of my favourite games ever. There is so much innovation and surprise in games like Bayonetta and W101. But it's pretty obvious these games don't sell enough and they're doing a lot of grunt work for other companies far less interesting games. Sad for the people who want to innovate in gaming.
Memory is a big part of the Switch 2's problems. Bigger file sizes that need to be read faster means we have to pay for it in either game cards, or memory expansion.
Saying that, I don't see why companies making smaller games without large graphical needs don't just keep making original Switch games instead?
With the price increase, my Nephew and I were talking about this. Not so much what we were looking forward to playing again, but what we would be willing to pay over £60 for.
My own list was Bayonetta 4, Xenoblade, Zelda, Donkey Kong and 3D Mario. Certain other games are on a case by case basis, but I’ve come to the conclusion I don’t really play Smash, Splatoon, Mario Sports or party games enough to pay out that sort of money.
Yup, we get the Switch 2 has been designed to have all the K’s, flops and thingamajigs you could fit in the thing.
But I get the feeling the argument from most core Nintendo fans is it goes against the traditional ideology of Nintendo to make consoles and games that are affordable to everyone, not just enthusiast gamers who care more about lifelike graphics than a bit of fun jumping on mushrooms.
Guessing it’s a Neodymium magnet. I’ve seen them used in guitars to hold metal slides in place firmly on the body but so you can take it off when you need to.
Aside from price, I do think the biggest issue Nintendo have with the Switch 2 is the lack of up front information. It seems very weird there are going to be 2 versions of this game on release, and I have no idea what each one will cost without trawling through the Internet.
Same goes for the other 3rd party games prices and the different upgrade prices for Switch 2 versions. It shows Nintendo knew the price increases would be contentious and they thought they could lessen some of the criticism by not being clear.
I had an N64 when it came out. The games were upwards of £60 and Turok was over £100. I got 6games for it, Mario 64, Pilot Wings, MK64, The Two Zelda’s, and Blast Corps.
Then the PS1 came out with much cheaper games and I forgot about it very quickly. That is the risk Nintendo is taking with the Switch 2.
Let’s be honest, aside from the hardcore audience no one is going to consider buying this at that price, especially tucked away on the eshop. It’s not even like recent Inazuma games (anything after the DS games) have been applauded for their quality.
Yes, £1000 is expensive for a shoehorn, but this one is diamond incrusted so it’s a bargain.
Personally I think there is tech in the Switch 2 like the Game Chat and the 4K resolution that might not be fully utilised by developers or players. Without that tech, they could have lowered the price.
If I’m honest, I’m probably willing to pay a lot of money for MKM, DKB, a 3D Mario, or a mainline Zelda.
The problem with that is there are other games that will also get a price rise that I’m on the fence about, and the sweet spot of £40-£50 makes me willing to give them a go. Kirby is a game like that, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime 4. At £60 to £80 I will just ignore them. Same as a lot of 3rd party titles. I wouldn’t risk my hard earned cash on something that I’m not guaranteed to enjoy 100% like Octopath Traveller- looks like my sort of game but was a bit lacking to justify £65.
Plus there are games like Bayonetta and Xenoblade that I adore, but I know they will fail miserably if they launch at £65 as they are so niche. I get prices have to go up with greater workload and inflation, but that high cost of means every game has to be my ideal game ever, and I’m guessing for a lot of fans.
Imagine if McDonalds started making 15 dollar/12 quid burgers. Lots of people would complain that the thing they were used to wasn’t being aimed at them any more.
The burger may even be worth it, but it is alienating a huge customer base that they’ve built. I mean I’m going to buy a Switch 2, but you can see it isn’t going to be as popular as the Switch one, both with how many adopters and how many games they buy. Nintendo are naive if they didn’t expect some blowback/mockery for their decision.
My point is Mario Kart World, DK Banaza etc… are exclusives for the Switch 2, but a lot of it’s library is going to be Switch games- including new titles Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Rhythm Heaven, Tomadachi Life, probably the Yoshi’s Woolly World port, and likely more coming. I bet more people will play Tomadachi life on the Switch 2 than Welcome Tour. Nintendo isn’t just switching off the Switch 1, it’s just adding a higher tier of entry with the Switch 2 to play beefier games.
The Switch 2 is basically the physical equivalent of the NSO+. It’s just you have to pay £400 quid for entry plus games.
Basically the Switch 2 is actually a Pro version of the Switch 1 like the PS5 Pro is to the PS5, except it has exclusive games. I can imagine the Switch 1 still getting games into 2027 and perhaps beyond. I could see anything that doesn’t really need the power of the Switch 2 (remasters of old games, indies, less graphics intensive games) being Switch 1 games, possibly with an upgrade offered.
I can see myself being a lot more selective in choosing what games to buy for the Switch. I believe Mario Kart World probably is worth the money for me (hopefully I can get the bundle version), but I can see myself skipping those maybe games for me like Splatoon or Metroid Prime, or new titles or 3rd parties that I would have bought on the Switch.
When the first Switch launched there was only a few games to play, so we bought Snipperclips, 1 2 Switch, Bomberman and anything else to play as well as Zelda.
This time there is Mario Kart, but we’re also bringing our Switch 1 games. We aren’t going to be blindly spending out a tenner for things games like this.
You can see why Nintendo has Switch One games coming out in 2026, I’m guessing Nintendo will keep a supply of smaller games coming so they can point at them as a ‘budget option’ for families.
I get the Financial situation and political climate is affecting Nintendo pricing, but this is just scummy.
I bought Kirby on the Switch for £42, and you can buy it now for between £20-£37. I think the Zelda games may have both cost me £45-£47. Money for old rope.
Pretty sure Nintendo have deleted the full 4 hour Treehouse livestream on YouTube with the drop the price chorus and put up separate videos for the games instead.
Nintendo have always told us they don’t swim in the red ocean, competing with graphics and power, fps and 4K gaming. They swim in the blue ocean innovating and making fun weird games for families and everyday gamers.
From the trailer MKW looks like a mix of BOTW and MK8, so I wouldn't be willing to say it isn't worth the money, but it's the fact the upgraded switch games being a similar price is concerning. I couldn't see myself buying 3rd party games at that price, when a lot of the lineup is 5 years old and discounted on other systems.
At the end of the day, I still own a working Switch 1with a backlog, and don't need to rush to buy a new system until I feel I must have it and am going to get enough out of those pricey games.
The direct didn't really show it actually has any fun gameplay to it. They could have made it an NSO perk if they were determined not to give it for free.
I wonder how much they'll be asking for a five year old game?
Also, you can guess big games are around 50-60 gigabytes- internal storage of Switch 2 will hold 256gb, 256gb expansion card is about £80. Carts may still be the way to go.
By announcing it’s for a limited time when they did seems like they aren’t confident their preorders will sell out, and they are trying to build a bit of FOMO
I wonder if they expected the discourse to be as negative as it was out the gate?
Time to be more selective. I don't think this would stop me from buying the big games, but stuff like Hyrule Warriors or Mario Party would be not worth it for me any more.
Also it seems like Nintendo will be competing against physical retailers this time around.
As someone who has been conditioned by Nintendo to not put too much importance into graphics over the quality of the games, I really don’t care about enhancing games I’ve just played on the last system. Nice option but not one I will use.
The reason why I’ve found the PS5 so flat is because so many Japanese games have tried to copy Western game styles. FF7R and Astrobot are at least zany and fun.

Not a stellar launch campaign Nintendo.
