Seeing how so many of their games are reliant on non gaming IP- Lego, Harry Potter, LotR, DC Comics, what can they sell besides Mortal Kombat's IP and the development studios?
Owning a PS5 has really cemented my opinion powerful isn't necessarily better. The Switch has been a perfectly capable machine for the things I like to play, and it wouldn't bother me if I was playing on it for a couple more years.
But then it seems Nintendo is moving on, so that's not really an option.
Mortal Kombat always feels like a game that comes out to massive hype and is the discounted a month after. I’m guessing the story mode and all that voice acting make it an expensive game to make.
This exemplifies the absolute randomness of Nintendo. We’ve been questioning if Nintendo were going to carry on with amiibo, yet from out of nowhere they create four new ones for a 2 year old game.
The music industry made a race to cut costs with Autotune and automated drum loops and has cheapened its quality. Hollywood went all in on CGI and now audiences are unimpressed with every exploding city. I don’t see the Video Games and AI being any different- it’s supposed to be a luxury item and not just ‘content’.
Whether they’re worth it or not, I completed DKC Returns and Luigi Mansion 2 and have no desire to play either again. There is actually quite a lot of competition to these games leading up to Christmas (both on Switch and other platforms) and I think both will be forgotten relatively quickly in the shuffle.
I just cancelled the auto renew on the plus part this year. SNES and gameboy games hold up really well, not so much N64. I completed the Gameboy Colour games I wanted to play and the MK8 DLC was pretty bland. I need the basic pack for if I and my nephew need to move our save data over to the next console, but I’d prefer to save the almost £30 for the extra stuff.
Being a savvy/curmudgeonly gamer these days I’ve been grumbling to myself the only Christmas game would be Astrobot for about £60-£70. The fact this is going to be around around £40 has made me happy to skip Astrobot for the time being and get this instead, and possibly something else Nintendo with the money I can save.
Why would Nintendo pay to show their games on an internet advert when they have invented the best games internet advert in the Nintendo Direct? The only reason you pay to show your game is you want to expose your game to an audience who may not see it otherwise. This is the reason E3 also became financially unviable.
I played the first Horizon on the PS4, and it was a big game, but I found Alloy to be completely devoid of character and didn’t really care if a Robot T-Rex bit her head off. Link from BOTW was such a deeper character despite to saying a peep in the entire game.
The Lego version at least seems to have facial expressions.
Summer Gamesfest has the same core issue as E3- it lives and dies on how many games they have to show. Who cares about the ad breaks in between the programmes? Especially when those ads have ads as well for things like snacks and films?
So EA wanted more money by not paying FIFA, and FIFA wanted more money from EA for the license. Now there will be two games in competition with each other which will split the customer base and each will give half as much money to EA and FIFA than before.
Knowing that Nintendo won’t use an IP without a new idea or gimmick, I sort of wonder if there is any where 2D DK can go after some really clever games.
I like the idea of ‘Donkey Kong Odyssey’, using the framework of Mario Odyssey but with DK’s moves instead.
Once upon a time, everybody wanted steak for every meal. It was expensive, but enough people eat it to make it worthwhile to farm.
Then one day, half the people said ‘I’m bored with Steak, It’s always the same. I’m going to try all the other foods, like beans on toast and dairylea dunkers.’
Meanwhile the other half still expected expensive, high quality steak even though there wasn’t enough customers to justify it.
If there was ever an example that 4K graphics and Live Services aimed at dudebro gamers eating Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew weren’t the be all and end all of gaming, this would be it.
This is the reality of gaming acquisitions. EA have made a reputation for themselves as a self styled Galactus ‘eater of worlds’ and it now seems Microsoft are copying the model.
I had it on preorder, but because the Switch version being a mess I cancelled it (the delay did a favour), and I’ll get it on the PS5 instead. I would of liked to play it on the go, but if it has problems running it seems a bit pointless.
It seems he has a pretty good pedigree in getting 3rd party games to run on consoles. I would imagine he is a key part in the transition to the next Nintendo console.
As a business strategy, spending almost $100bn in 5 years on publishers, sacking 9% of the workforce, releasing a few broken games on a subscription service that isn’t attracting as many users as anyone would suspect, and then admitting you need to sell stuff elsewhere because your user base doesn’t care about it is perhaps the dumbest way to run a company.
And yet they continue to throw money down a hole….
I say it every year: what's the point of a day of trying to trick and fool people on the Internet a domain that is all about trying to trick and fool people all year round?
Of course the people who do the survey are likely to be the fanatic Capcom fans that love Mega Man and Ace Attorney. I would imagine a lot of people who play Monster Hunter and Street Fighter may not have a clue who makes those games.
From what my friend who owns a steamdeck tells me, is he’s been playing lots of indie games from his steam library, but doesn’t really play triple A games on it unless it’s plugged into the wall whilst watching TV at the same time. The idea of playing Cyberpunk 2077 on a 20 minute bus ride (with voice acting and cutscenes), doesn’t really work.
The biggest issue they will have is if they can design their games to fit a hand held. Nintendo games work because you can have a quick 15 minute play of a level or two. In general FPS and open world games need more time investment, not to mention the whole online connection issue for multilayer games.
In a year where there seems to be very few big games being released on all platforms, I somehow already have a stacked lineup with Unicorn Overlord, Hifi Rush, and Eiyuden Chronicle on the way. I get the feeling Princess Peach is an ‘in emergency break glass’ game if the games dry up in the latter half of the year.
For me Suikoden was a watershed moment in gaming where a really big story could be told well without ignoring gameplay. I actually cared about the characters and was surprised about where the story went. It was like an PG video game version of game of thrones. Final Fantasy stories have always been a bit convoluted for me with very strange reasoning for why characters did things.
Eiyuden Chronicles is the only game I’ve pre ordered on the Switch.
I really enjoyed the original Splatoon on the Wii U (that really had a better library than people remember), but there’s a law of diminishing returns as they’ve released the same game twice. Splatoon 2’s dlc was wonderful, but I feel I just paid for the same game 3 times now. They need to do something different with the series for the next instalment like they’ve updated Zelda, Mario, and Kirby recently.
Mario generally succeeds by altering the game each time. Just look at how Nintendo knew they needed a different game in Super Mario 2 in the west to keep people interested. When we got to New Super Mario Bros it felt like they were going through the motions. Although there are key things that stay the same with the feel of Mario, it always does better when they go back to the drawing board and find a new twist.
I’m guessing they don’t own any of the IP like Crash, Spyro, and Skylanders, but they can partner with Activision/XBox to license the characters?
I think this is sensible for Xbox because these games don’t really have an audience on XBox and they’re just paying the staff for a product they don’t know what to do with. It’s smart for Toys For Bob if they can keep their budgets sensible and make games people want to play quickly- and have access to the familiar IP. If they have to do something original without those characters it will be harder.
The eshop is selling Unicorn Overlord at £54.99. Altus is selling the boxed edition of the game on their Amazon store for £49.99- and the chances are it will be cheaper in a week, in a month, in 6 months time. And I can lend it to my friends and possibly sell it if I want to. Why would I pay more for less?

I would have assumed they would have given the award to Astrobot this year.
It’s just another excuse for a sponsorship.

Although there was one part that really got my Goat.

It looks great.
I would like to know how much it is and if it’s a particularly short game however, which seems to be the missing information at the moment.

Exactly. How do you sell the game concept without the Lego IP?
