Re: Feature: 9 Things Nintendo Could Add To Switch 2 So It's Not 'Just Another Switch'

JJtheTexan

I don't want Nintendo to get cute with forced gimmicks at all. I just want a more-powerful Nintendo Switch that can run PS4 and lower-spec PS5 games, with decent battery life, and Hall effect joysticks on the Joy-Con. That's it.

When we look at the "fringe" stuff that Nintendo dreamed up for Switch, a lot of it was abandoned pretty quickly. Very few games use the Joy-Con in ways envisioned by ARMS. I think no more than five games used the infrared sensor on the right Joy-Con. HD Rumble is awesome, but most developers didn't do much with it, and PS5 haptic feedback is much better (but also ignored by pretty much every developer except Team Asobi and Guerrilla).

Stick with what works, and don't increase the cost of the console with junk that most developers won't even use and gamers don't want.

Also, please give it a good name. Switch 2 is fine. Please do not call it New Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch U or Nintendo Beepo or some other nonsense

Re: Expansion Packs And DLC Are Now "Eligible In All Categories" At The Game Awards

JJtheTexan

I generally believe "Game of the Year" should be awarded to the best entirely-new game, but things have blurred so much it's hard to make that a strict and fair rule. Ultimately, if the voters say an existing game's DLC was better than any all-new production released in the last year, then I guess that's as much an indictment of the year's releases as it is an acknowledgement of that expansion's quality.

At any rate, Astro Bot is my personal GotY, but I didn't play many 2024 releases this year besides that and Balatro.

Re: So, Will You Be Listening To The New Mobile App Nintendo Music?

JJtheTexan

I will still be primarily using my private collection of ripped Nintendo tracks which I uploaded to YouTube music, since it automatically plays in my car when my phone is plugged in. I'll probably use the Nintendo Music app only when I'm doing chores or whatever and just want to listen to music on my phone.

My preference would have been for Nintendo to provide its music on YouTube and Spotify and whatnot, but I guess I'll take what I can get.

Re: Sakurai's Penultimate YouTube Video Is All About Iwata

JJtheTexan

I wrote an article for another video game news site many years ago, about Mr. Iwata's contributions to debugging Super Smash Bros. Melee, so I was somewhat familiar with that story, but I apparently got some of the details wrong. What a great video, and a fitting tribute to one of gaming's best contributors.

Re: PlatinumGames Gains 'The Wonderful 101' Trademark From Nintendo

JJtheTexan

I look at this as perhaps a way of Nintendo making good on what was undoubtedly a big financial loss for both companies when W101 flopped on the Wii U. Nintendo has a long and mostly successful history with PlatinumGames, and it's good business to keep the smaller company happy and willing to work with Nintendo. Several of PG's titles have been Nintendo exclusives, after all.

Re: 'Tetris Forever' Compiles More Than 15 Titles In A New Interactive Documentary

This will mean an absolutely unbeatable trove of Tetris games on the Nintendo Switch:

  • Tetris (Elektronika 60)
  • Tetris (NES)
  • Tetris (Game Boy)
  • Tetris (Famicom)
  • Tetris 2 + BomBliss
  • Tetris Battle Gaiden
  • Super Tetris 2 + BomBliss
  • Super Tetris 3
  • Tetris Time Warp
  • Tetris 99
  • Tetris Effect: Connected
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
  • Tetris: The Grand Master
  • Tetris: The Absolute Grand Master

I'm sure I missed something!

Re: Nintendo Life's Switch Summer Survey 2024

JJtheTexan

@antdickens the only problem I encountered with the survey was that the question "Are you ready to move on from the Switch?" was already answered ("Thanks for responding!"), but I never saw the options or had an opportunity to choose one.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel - Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow

JJtheTexan

My copy of the game has that awful Konami's Best art posted by a couple of other commenters. I had a professional printer make a replica of the original box art just so it doesn't look so awful on my display shelf.
(Of course, if I ever sell the game, I will remove the replica art.)

Re: Feature: The Famicom Failure That Almost Bankrupted HAL, But Shaped Nintendo's Future

JJtheTexan

Excellent post here. More like this, please!

As an aside, I knew the general background here without many of the details, and I have often wondered why Nintendo never bought HAL Laboratory outright. The vast majority of HAL's output has been exclusive to Nintendo platforms, with (I believe) only two or three games for mobile and PC over the last 40 years. Nintendo also co-owns the copyright to Kirby, so it seems like a natural fit.

I have the same questions about Intelligent Systems and a handful of other developers who do most or all of their work for Nintendo only. I guess that's just how they want to run their businesses!
