Re: "It's Make-Or-Break For Sure" - Shovel Knight Dev's Fate Rests On Upcoming Zelda-Like

@bleeflooflah you're right. I misremembered the overall commitment, and I didn't mean to imply Yacht Club did too much. As I said, I absolutely love the game and the developers! I think you said what I meant in a much more clear way; they got a little distracted with the side projects.

Regardless, I really want Mina the Hollower to be another big success for them, and I am confident it will be. I could see it selling 1 million copies in its first year, across all platforms, if it's up to their standards of quality - which it will be, given their willingness to take the risk of delaying it!

I would love to see an in-depth item from Nintendo Life (or any reputable gaming site, really) about what's been going on at Yacht Club. I have followed YC for years, and it sure seems like their predicament is a combination of overpromising on the Shovel Knight Kickstarter, and mismanagement since the game came out.

The initial Shovel Knight Kickstarter campaign came with a LOT of stretch goals, and the funding hit all of them. They got the base game out in a reasonable amount of time, and it was great! ...But then they had to start delivering on those stretch goals, many of which were free DLC. So, they were pouring time and resources for years after release into free content that wasn't necessarily generating more revenue.

I love, love, LOVE Shovel Knight. I love it so much, I have bought it at least five times that I know of (digitally on Wii U, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch, and two more physical copies) and I've played hundreds of hours of it and its spinoffs. I personally wanted a "Shovel Knight 64" but I'm definitely picking up Mina the Hollower sight unseen. I really hope YC is able to overcome their mistakes and deliver a great game that sells!

Re: Gear.Club Unlimited 3 Speeds Onto Switch 2 Later This Year

JJtheTexan

The first Gear.Club was mostly fine, and the only racing sim on Nintendo Switch with real licensed vehicles for a year or so. The second is largely identical to the first; it's "fine." I bought both physical editions. Both games run at 30fps which is less than ideal for this sort of game.

A GCU 3 needs to be 60fps / 1080p at an absolute minimum for me to consider it. I'm not a graphics snob, I swear, except when it comes to racing games xD

Re: Nintendo Launches 2026 Calendars, Including One Just For NSO Subscribers

JJtheTexan

@lifer that makes sense! Apologies for my American-centrism.

@Briarback in the USA it's very weird: Sunday is part of the "weekend," and most people have the day off (schools, government, typical businesses) but on calendars, it's the first day of the week. Technically our weeks run Sunday (start) to Saturday (end), so if today is Friday and something is happening on Sunday, we would say it's happening "next week."

I have no idea where this dumb and bad system started, but I'm used to it.

Re: Poll: Is Your Third-Party Switch 2 Dock Still Working After This Week's System Update?

JJtheTexan

I want a second dock for my bedroom TV. I really don't want to spend $120 U.S. on the official one, but I vividly remember reading about third-party docks bricking original Switch consoles years ago, and stuff like these software update reports make me even less confident in cheaper options.

Frankly, it stinks. Linus Tech Tips did a whole video addressing this several weeks ago, specifically how Nintendo apparently created its own proprietary HDMI tech for this purpose. Very anti-consumer if you ask me.

Re: Reggie Is "Surprised" We Haven't Seen More Xbox Titles On Switch 2

JJtheTexan

What confuses me the most is the total absence of Call of Duty. They're literally bound by legal contract to provide it for a ten-year period... so where is it? They can get it running on the Xbox Series S, so surely a Nintendo Switch 2 port shouldn't be impossible.

Not that I care too terribly much. I'm not a CoD player, and while I'd welcome Halo or Forza, I won't lose any sleep if they never come to NS2.

Re: Square Enix Aims To Automate 70% Of QA With Generative AI By 2027

JJtheTexan

I absolutely hate and deplore AI replacing human QA testers, because they are the last line of defense before release and work an exhausting and thankless job, usually for meager pay.

That said, I could see AI-driven QA having some actual potential. Where it could become a problem is if S-E decides to just fire all its human QA testers and go full speed ahead with AI. Can't wait for the rotten state games will release in should that happen.

Re: Rare NES Platformer 'Little Samson' Is Coming To Switch In 2026

JJtheTexan

@AlanaHagues I think there might be another interesting story angle worth pursuing (or maybe @Damo Time Extension can) if you have time. The "fine print" at the end of the Limited Run trailer reads:

"Seiri Densetsu Lickle (Little Samson) was developed in accordance with Article 67-2, Paragraph 1 of the Japan Copyright Act... Production and sale has been authorized by the Japan Arbitration System for products of unknown copyright holders."

Basically it sounds like nobody could find the copyright holder / IP owner, so they appealed to Japan's copyright office and convinced them that it was abandonware and no longer subject to copyright protection. I think.
