Re: Talking Point: As A Nintendo Fan, Do You Really Need To Play The Virtual Boy?

JJtheTexan

I've had one since 1996. I loved it at the time it was new, but after getting mine refurbished and playable again, I find using it to be unbearable and headache-inducing. It's still a nice display piece and conversation-starter, though!

As for the games, none was all that special, but Nintendo missed a big opportunity in not porting these to the 3DS. It's a shame, since it should have worked (in theory) and would have been the only practical way to preserve the games to be played as intended.

Re: Metacritic Reveals "The Worst Video Games Of 2023"

JJtheTexan

I was curious what Nintendo Life's worst of 2023 might be. I queried the site's game list and filtered by year and review score, and came up with this:

4/10 (Poor)

  • Colossal Cave
  • Digimon World: Next Order
  • DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing
  • Ebeneezer and the Invisible World
  • Hatsune Miku: The Planet of Wonder and Fragments of Wishes
  • Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest
  • Minecraft Legends
  • Molly Medusa: Queen of Spit
  • Mortal Kombat 1
  • Skautfold: Userper

3/10 (Bad)

  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Clive 'N' Wrench
  • MythForce

2/10 (Terrible)

  • The Walking Dead: Destinies

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Drops Out Of US "Top 20" Games Chart For First Time

JJtheTexan

It had to peak sometime. The game has something like a 50% attach rate, which is almost unheard of for a game that isn't a free pack-in with every console. Pretty much everyone who wants MK8 has it by now.

This is also why Nintendo games rarely go on sale. They hold their full retail value because the demand is so sustainable. Make quality products, and people will gladly pay full price.

Re: Random: This Drink Driving Game Is A Nasty Blemish On The Switch eShop

JJtheTexan

I expect this will be pulled from the eShop, but perhaps for an unexpected reason: the vehicle in the first screen shot resembles a Jeep... a little too closely. The distinctive front grille is trademarked by Jeep's parent company and is vigorously defended. The knockoff Range Rover / Land Rover is also probably infringing on IP rights.

Fortunately, news media coverage exposes this stuff since Nintendo is too lazy to care, and it tends to resolve itself pretty quickly.

Re: Talking Point: Which Version Of Super Mario Bros. 3 Do You Prefer?

JJtheTexan

The NES version is among my all-time favorite games on any platform, and I still prefer it to the SNES because of its tighter controls... but I really, really love the extra features and added courses in the GBA version.

I just wish there was a version that had the SNES visuals with the NES controls / physics and GBA extras, except for Mario voice acting. Sorry Ollie, the "Lucky!" and "Just what I needed!' does get old, and fast.

Re: Nintendo Accounts To "Help Ease" Next-Gen Transition, According To Doug Bowser

JJtheTexan

I know Nintendo loves to do things differently, sometimes for their own sake and in spite of themselves, but it would really be great if they would take a cue from Xbox and PlayStation and preserve 100% backward-compatibility on the next console. New PS4 games are still coming out every week, and having access to the full PS4 library on my PS5 adds a ton of value to that console. The same goes for Xbox owners. Everyone wins: developers, consumers, and the platform holder!

Re: Feature: Game Boy Color - A Quarter Century Of Colour Nintendo Handhelds

JJtheTexan

I still have my original Atomic Purple Game Boy Color, a Christmas gift in 1998! I was a college student at the time.

I didn't get many GBC-exclusive games for it, but it really did give new life to my existing Game Boy library.

My favorite GBC game is still The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, though I really do love launch title Tetris DX. I'd love to see it come to Nintendo Switch Online...

Re: Community: 28 Switch Games We Missed, As Recommended By You

JJtheTexan

I love this because it shows some good-looking games that totally passed me by. I plan to check out Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers looks very unique and appears to take some inspiration from Sine Mora, another great shooter now on Switch. Blade of Darkness also looks like it would be something I might enjoy as someone who was too busy with college and work in the early 2000s to check out games like that when they were new.

Excellent finds, Nintendo Life fans and writers!

Re: Random: Switch Exclusive "Watermelon Game" Goes Viral, eShop Downloads Skyrocket

JJtheTexan

I watch a lot of hololive streamers (see the video shared by @Bass_X0 above for an example), and pretty much all of them have been playing this game lately. I am hopeful for a localized release on the North American eShop, but since the game's success apparently caught the developer by surprise, I imagine it could be a while, if it ever happens at all.

It does look like a lot of fun, being simple, addictive, and inexpensive. A handful of obscure indie games hit this cycle every year, it seems, and often long after their initial release. (See also: Phasmophobia, Among Us, Vampire Survivors, etc.)
