Re: Random: Someone's Tried To Fix Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom's Awful UI

GravyThief

Luckily you only need to use about 5 echoes for most of the game so they’re always ready to select. And if you could just whack the enemies then you’d only need about 3. But I suppose the game would be over even quicker if you didn’t have to wait for your echoes to bother to whack the enemies all the time. What an extremely lacklustre Zelda game. I really hope this doesn’t set the template for future games in the series.

Re: Metroid Prime Remastered Studio 'Iron Galaxy' Confirms Lay Offs

GravyThief

@-wc- I know where you’re coming from. I’m on a bit of a GameCube kick at the moment, and playing the original Metroid Prime I can safely say it still plays as gloriously as I remember. But on the other hand, the remaster looks amazing and is definitely the quality all other remasters should aim for.

Re: "Nintendo Is Probably The Easiest To Scam" - Devs Discuss The Current State Of The eShop

GravyThief

I never, ever, browse the eShop or PS Store. Doesn’t sound like I’m missing out. I know what games I want and I only go on if there isn’t a physical copy - I specifically search for that game, add to wish-list, done.

I can see why this is a problem, but all it does is reaffirm to me to avoid digital store fronts unless I don’t have another option, go in quick and get out fast!

Re: Rumour: Switch 2 Game Cases Might Take Up More Space On Your Shelf

GravyThief

I find this hard to believe. It would be a massive step backwards in terms of sustainability, and it will cost Nintendo more and hinder retailers in terms of shelf space. The new game cartridges aren’t going to be much bigger, if at all, so there is just no logic to doing this. Switch game cases are excellent, they are small (but not too small) and extremely thin. I hope the ones are the same or very similar.

Re: Opinion: My Daughter Made Me Realise That Mario Wonder's Difficulty Options Need Work

GravyThief

@MSaturn my daughters are the same. They could hardly play when they were 3. And now they’re 6 and 7 but still can’t really do the run and jump button together or understand momentum etc. But it just takes practice. The more they play, the better they get. They find using the 8bitdo SN30 the best - as it’s basically a SNES pad it’s a really good size for their hands but obviously it has all the buttons and sticks so they can play any game with it.

Re: Opinion: My Daughter Made Me Realise That Mario Wonder's Difficulty Options Need Work

GravyThief

Totally agree. My two daughters really want to play games now, but hardly any are suitable. Shock, horror, children don’t like it when they get punished and penalised for enemies touching them. Who would’ve thought that?

Yoshi’s Crafted World does it really well. Mellow mode lets them fly everywhere, every enemy swallowed gives extra eggs, and they can take loads of hits. They love it. Animal Crossing is another good one. While they can’t read a lot of it, they’re happy just mooching around digging, chopping, and collecting all sorts of critters.

I had similar issues with Mario Wonder. Once they got over that they couldn’t be Peach or Daisy, they were upset they couldn’t turn into an Elephant if they were Yoshi or Nabbit. Why not allow them to use the most fun power up in the game? I couldn’t believe it.

They’ve been watching me play some GameCube recently (they loved watching me play Ocarina of Time on N64 so now watching me play Wind Waker) and I think I’ve almost going the ultimate game for children. Simpson’s Road Rage! The Sunday Drive option just lets them drive around with no time limits, and they can pick up and drop off passengers as they please. The only issue is Krusty the Clown who wants to go to the lap dancing club 🤣 I just said he wanted to go dancing, which as he’s a clown, made complete sense to them! 😅

Re: Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom Has Been Nominated For Another Award

GravyThief

Completed this 2 days ago. I’m glad it’s over to be honest. What a disappointing Zelda game. I started it before Xmas, but stopped playing during the Xmas break to have a palette cleanse with a real Zelda game with real dungeons. Playing Ocarina of time again made me realise how great dungeons in Zelda games used to be. The ones in this game are terrible by comparison.

I also find the final boss fight to kind of sum up the game really. You sit back summoning a few monsters to get the odd hit in, while Link does most of the fighting and most of the damage.

Please please don’t let this be the design template for all future 2D Zelda games Nintendo. I’ve already lost my beloved 3D Zelda games, don’t do the same with the 2D games.

Re: Genki Claims The 'Switch 2' Joy-Con Can Be Removed By 'Brute Force'

GravyThief

What’s the issue with how Joycons attach on the current Switch? I’ve had zero issues with them and I find the rails to be quite satisfying when you slide them in and get that ‘click’. While magnets seem a more elegant solution on the surface, I just struggle to imagine they’d be strong enough for there to never be any accidental removals during gameplay. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Re: So, Have You Pre-Ordered Donkey Kong Country Returns HD For Switch?

GravyThief

The UK Nintendo Store is doing pre-order bundles with various items such as a microfibre cloth and a bum bag. Even if you have no interest in the game, it’s worth pre-ordering it for these items alone.

Just think how cool you’ll look walking around with your microfibre cloth in your bum bag. People will want to talk to you. Men will want to be you. Women will want to be with you.

Re: Random: Switch Players Report Game Cards Being Swapped Out For Googly Eyes

GravyThief

@JohnnyMind I’ve just been through all my games and got myself about 500 gold points, so not too shabby! I probably could have doubled that at least had I known about this when I first got my Switch in 2023, oh well.

And I probably have about another 1,000 or more gold points I could claim if I opened up all my sealed games that I’ve bought but haven’t got around to playing yet. But I think I’ll leave them sealed as I know they’re worth more sealed and chances are I won’t get around to playing some of them. Still, when I do open any I now know to claim these points.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, it’s much appreciated!

Re: Random: Switch Players Report Game Cards Being Swapped Out For Googly Eyes

GravyThief

@JohnnyMind dang! So is this saying there are literally loads of physical games I’ve bought that I could have earned gold points on but haven’t? I never realised! Does it work for any game i.e. not just Nintendo published games? And I’m guessing one physical copy can earn multiple people gold points if it’s sold and bought second hand within 1 year of release?

Re: Random: Switch Players Report Game Cards Being Swapped Out For Googly Eyes

GravyThief

I’ve learned not to open every new game I get as I don’t always get around to playing them all. To help hold up their value if I never do play them.

However I’ve been making sure to check as best I can that a game card is included in the case for switch games, as I see lots of Amazon reviews where people say an empty case arrived.

I shine a torch through the sides to check it’s there. I should still be ok with this trick as I check the jagged edge of the game card is present, not just a flat dark strip where the game card should be

Re: Stardew Valley Has Now Sold More Copies Than Mario Kart Wii

GravyThief

Is this a farming game like Harvest Moon (as it was called back in the day), or is there more to it?

I’m really not into sim type games, where there’s no real end goal, too much like work. But I’m not sure if there’s more to it and I’m missing out. Then again, I don’t like Minecraft, Fortnite, heck even modern Zelda games, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this is another modern ‘masterpiece’ I just don’t get.

Re: NieR:Automata Surpasses Another Sales Milestone, Plans For 2025 Teased

GravyThief

I bought this a while ago off the back of all the rave reviews, but haven’t got around to playing it yet. Although I do have reservations. I played Astral Chain back in October (which had a rave review on this very site) and I stopped after a while. It was an absolute bore fest. The gameplay was repetitive, the story had me intrigued for a while but once that wore off I just stopped playing it. I bet this game ends up being the same!

Re: Opinion: Nightdive Studios Had Its Best, Most Prolific Year Yet In 2024

GravyThief

I wish you would put proper comments against your screenshots. I don’t know what games most of these screenshots come from. It’s the same in your reviews, you pop screenshots throughout the piece but just state whether it was taken in handheld or docked mode. You don’t actually tell me what the screenshot is showing or anything about it.

Re: Opinion: Nintendo Needs To Let Us Block The Crap On Switch 2's eShop

GravyThief

I’ve never once experienced this issue. Because I NEVER browse the eShop. Why would I? My gaming time is limited, why would I waste my time doing that when I could be playing games.

I only ever search for specific titles I know I want on the eShop, to either buy there and then or add to my wishlist so I don’t forget about them. If I come across an interesting game in my travels then again I’ll do a specific search for it. That’s it. Simples.

Re: Video: Konami Uploads Suikoden Opening Trailer Ahead Of I & II HD Remaster Release

GravyThief

I’m in two minds about this. I have both games on the PS1, and played and completed the first game a couple of years ago. So I’d only play the second game from this.

It would be much more convenient to play it on the Switch, but I’m not really a fan of the HD/modern look of retro-pixel games, unless it’s something like a 2D-HD style.

I’ll have to check out how it looks to see if I like the new look or not.

Re: Lizardcube Co-Founder Leaves To Start New Game Company

GravyThief

Their Wonder Boy remake was magnificent. I had never played the original and had no nostalgia for it. It was their art style and music that drew me in. Afterwards I played the original and watched their documentary about how they made it and I loved it even more.

I hope both companies continue to make great games.

Re: N64 Controller For Switch Receives A Tasty Black Friday Discount (Europe)

GravyThief

@Rainbowjames that’s annoying. I should have been notified when they came back in stock but clearly that feature isn’t working properly! I would also like a couple of them. Not just for playing SNES games on NSO, but for all the 2D platform games I seem to like playing. The d-pad on the Pro Controller is just awful so I’m hoping the d-pad on these SNES controllers is much better.

Re: New Minecraft Movie Trailer Digs Into Steve's Backstory

GravyThief

@Mana_Knight my daughters’ introduction to gaming has been Luigi’s Mansion, Mario, Zelda, and Super Lucky’s Tale. They even recognise what a Metroid looks like, even if they’ve never played the game. So they were never going to be into Fortnite and Minecraft to be fair! 😀

Re: New Minecraft Movie Trailer Digs Into Steve's Backstory

GravyThief

I played Minecraft for the first time ever on my Switch at the weekend, with my two young daughters. It’s not my type of game at all, but I thought my girls would enjoy just building stuff. My goodness how wrong I was. It’s terrible. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about? I hope it’s because we didn’t know what we were doing but goodness me, this just reinforces how far removed I am from modern gaming trends. Minecraft, Fortnite, open world games. They’re terrible. I’m thankful I grew up in the 90s, otherwise I would not be a gamer at all.

Re: 'Nintendo Music' Adds Classic N64 Soundtrack, Here's Every Song Included

GravyThief

@UmbreonsPapa I just had another go, and I managed to trawl through all the games and favourite the tracks I want. So at least I can use it now. The pre-Switch offering is really meagre though. I can’t believe there are only 3 games each for N64 and SNES. These have the best soundtracks. I really hope Starfox/Starwing on the SNES makes an appearance. That game has some belters.

Re: Anniversary: Donkey Kong Country Is Now 30 Years Old (SNES)

GravyThief

I have very fond memories of this game. I got it for Xmas 1994, but the hype in the run up to its release was phenomenal. I remember the coverage on Bad Influence TV show, and the anecdote about when it was shown at E3 (or whatever it was at the time) and everyone thought it was for Nintendo’s next console.

I also remember playing levels repeatedly because I was looking for the ‘!’ exclamation mark to show on the map to show that you’d 100% completed a level. I was expecting it to show on the map itself, in the spot where you enter the level. Little did I know that they just added the ‘!’ to the end of the level’s name! I gave up in the end. I probably got 100% on loads of levels without even realising it 🙈

Re: 'Nintendo Music' Adds Classic N64 Soundtrack, Here's Every Song Included

GravyThief

I need to spend time trying to work out how best to browse this app and add specific tracks to a ‘favourites’ list or something. When I first downloaded it and had a quick look, it wasn’t that intuitive. I hope it’s better. It didn’t help that most soundtracks were from newer games, which let’s face it, have far inferior soundtracks to the classics. I mean, the Mario Odyssey soundtrack is fine, but it has nothing on the 80s and 90s Mario games.
