Re: Shantae's Revived GBA Game 'Risky Revolution' Finally Scores Switch Release Window

GravyThief

@Mario_maniac no worries. It was more that I wasn’t sure if I’d missed it as I’m always missing their releases and end up having to buy them elsewhere (usually at a mark up!). I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for this. I’ll have all the Shantae games for Switch when this comes out except, of course, Pirate’s Curse. There’s no way I’m spending £300-£400 on it from eBay or wherever.

Re: Shuhei Yoshida On Higher Switch 2 Game Prices: "It Was Going To Happen Eventually"

GravyThief

I’m just surprised it didn’t happen sooner. I feel like games have been underpriced for the past two decades, certainly what you end up paying for them anyway. Compared to other media and the costs involved, they’ve always felt under priced. Ultimately the market will decide, if they don’t sell enough to make a good enough profit, prices will either come down or they’ll look to reduce the cost and time it takes to make games (i.e. make smaller games).

I blame the proliferation of open world games for it all!

Re: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Now Boasts 300 Playable Titles

GravyThief

There’s also the fact that NSO seems to check you have a subscription every other day in my experience. So if you don’t have access to the internet at that point, good luck playing the games you’ve paid a subscription for! I find this same issue with all sorts of apps on iPad too. I spent ages downloading shows or games so they would work offline. But did they? No, most didn’t, because they still need an internet connection. Mario Run is the worst, it literally won’t work without an internet connection, even after I’d paid £10 for it! I hate this modern subscription or ‘must be connected to the internet’ rubbish.

Re: Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible With Other Games, But There May Be Some "Issues"

GravyThief

Since I realised you can buy a 3rd party (Mayflash) GameCube adapter for £18, and I have an abundant original GameCube controllers knocking about, I’ll just go with that option. I even have a Wavebird so can still play wirelessly too (not that using a wired controller bothers me).

Does rumble still work via the GameCube adapter and original GC controllers does anyone know?

It also means I don’t have to worry about yet another bespoke lithium-ion battery to maintain, and look forward to it degrading to the point where it’s next to useless in the next 5-10 years and can’t be replaced easily. Will we ever get standardised lithium batteries?

Re: Ex-PlayStation Boss Comments On Switch 2's "Hefty" Price Hikes

GravyThief

I’m not going to complain about the RRP for Switch 2 games until I see what they are actually going to cost. I don’t think I ever paid RRP for a Switch 1 or PS4 game. I also remember a time when SNES and N64 games cost £59.99 (sometimes more!) back in the 90s.

To be honest, I’ve always felt games in recent times have been under-priced when you think of how much time and cost it takes to develop them, and how much value you get out a game compared to games from older generations. The number of studios cutting staff or outright closing could point to games being under-priced in the market. Maybe this is the adjustment the industry needs to becoming more sustainable?

At the end of the day, the market will make the decision. If the games are too expensive, nobody will buy them and Nintendo and the like will either have to reduce their prices or stop making games.

Re: Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Aren't Tied To Nintendo Accounts

GravyThief

This is a much better option than the current ‘Code in a Box’, as you can lend or sell it like a full physical game for the foreseeable future, unlike the one time codes. So I think they should be applauded for this aspect of it.

My only concern is whether this means more publishers will go down this route rather than the full physical route. That I most definitely would not like!

Re: Hands On: Mario Kart World Brings The Utter Chaos In Knockout Mode

GravyThief

@NintendoWife I couldn’t agree more. I’ve always been more into the older Mario Kart games, with tighter tracks and fewer characters and vehicles. Double Dash was probably as much as I liked, I even though that had too many vehicles!

I liked MK8, but found the number of characters and vehicles to be too overwhelming. More is not always better, as Open World games prove.

Re: Hands On: Mario Kart World Brings The Utter Chaos In Knockout Mode

GravyThief

I really don’t understand the whole Open World aspect of racing games. I’ve never played Forza or Burnout Paradise. Plus I really don’t like Open World games in general.

Will you be just aimlessly driving about? If you have to drive to get to races, then won’t it just take longer to get to proper racing? I really hope it has a strong single player and local multiplayer aspect. I’m not into the social, online nonsense in games.

Re: Oops, Yoshi's Woolly World Featured In Switch 2's "Compatible Switch Games"

GravyThief

@NFrealinkling yes it does, but the other bits work differently. You don’t automatically make an egg when you grab an enemy with your tongue like in Crafted World. Also you get multiple eggs per enemy on mellow mode in Crafted Word, and you also get more hearts for each heart pick up. These little things made it difficult for my young daughters to get to grips with Woolly World, so I’m hoping they bring this in line with Crafted World if they do port it over.

Re: Oops, Yoshi's Woolly World Featured In Switch 2's "Compatible Switch Games"

GravyThief

My daughters loved Crafted World. It was perfect for their ability with mellow mode, not having to press down to make eggs from enemies, getting more hearts and eggs in mellow mode, and being able to constantly hover. If WW is coming to Switch, then I hope they tweak it to match Crafted World in this regard. They tried playing Woolly World on the Wii U but found it more difficult due to it not working in the same way.

Re: Rumour: GameCube Revival Planned For Nintendo Switch Online

GravyThief

I’m in too minds about this. I really don’t like how N64 games look on NSO. They’re too high-res, too clear, too clean. I suppose you could say that technically they’re better than the originals (higher res and all), they subjectively look worse in my opinion. They lose the atmosphere, and they make clear how old the 3D graphics are.

I’m worried GameCube games would be the same. I suppose I’ll have to wait and see.

Re: Nintendo Shares New Image Of Switch 2 Ahead Of The Big Day

GravyThief

@Coversnail I’ve literally just been playing my Switch in kickstand mode on the dining table while I was pumping some weights (grrrrrr!). I played a bit of Shantae in between rounds. Admittedly I don’t do it often, and I could just as easily done it in handheld mode, but I do like it from time to time.

Re: Review: 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller - Probably The Best Budget Switch Pad

GravyThief

I’ve been having issues with my 8bitdo SN30 Pro. The Switch just stopped recognising button presses from it, despite the controller showing as being connected. I had to use another controller or the Joy Cons to carry on playing. A software update on the SN30 seemed to have rectified it for now, but it’s not what I would expect from the ‘premiere’ makers of 3rd party controllers.

I’m now experiencing another issue. I’ve been playing Mario Odyssey with my daughters and we were using the SN30 Pro, as it fits better in their hands than the official pro controller. I took control to help them and everything felt off. It didn’t feel good. Example I was in those tanks in New Donk City and aiming the cannon with motion controls or the sticks felt rubbish. Changing to the official pro controller fixed the issue.

So yeah, my experience with an 8bitdo controller is far from the ‘premiere’ moniker I keep hearing and I won’t be buying another. I’ll stick with the official pad (although I need to do the fix with the d-pad as it’s terrible on the official controller).

Re: Opinion: It's Taken 30 Years, But 'Terminator 2D' Could Right A Childhood Wrong

GravyThief

I always preferred the first Terminator film. It was darker and Arnie/The Terminator makes a much better baddie. Both are great though.

I watched it well before I was 18, because my Dad recorded it from the TV then went over it to record over all the F bombs and the ‘love’ scene in the motel towards the end. The rest was fine though. The shooting, stabbing, Arnie gouging out his eye. No problem with that! 🤣

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Suikoden I & II HD Remaster

GravyThief

I was on the fence with this one, but after seeing videos of it I’ll have to pass. I just don’t like this clean, HD aesthetic for old games like this. Same way I won’t get the FF pixel remasters. I don’t know what it is. It all just looks too clean and mobile-y. The text boxes and new portraits all look too clinical. I’m probably not explaining myself very well, but I’ll stick to the originals. I didn’t have any issue playing the original PS1 Suikoden 1 a few years ago, so I’ll do the same for the sequel when I ever get around to it.

Re: Analyst Fears U.S. Tariffs Could Spell Disaster For Physical Games

GravyThief

What games are actually made in Mexico. Is it Xbox and PlayStation?

In Europe, PlayStation games are made in Austria, not Mexico. No idea about Xbox games because I’ve never owned one.

I’m not sure about Switch games. All I see on the case is ‘made in Japan’, so are they produced in Japan? It even says this on western developed games so it isn’t referring to the developers or publishers. If they are, then I suspect Switch games for America are made in Japan too.

In other words, which physical games are actually impacted by these new tariffs?

Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part

GravyThief

I’m guessing the other console versions are 60fps? It’s a shame the Switch version is only 30, I’m sure with some more effort they could have made it 60.

Were the originals 30 or 60? I played the first game recently and didn’t notice any issue so if it was 30 then this isn’t really a problem. You could argue it’s more authentic 🤣

And before anyone says “it’s an RPG it doesn’t make a difference”, it does. While it may not affect gameplay, you can still notice it when moving about. 60fps will always look and feel better, regardless of genre.

I still don’t know whether to get this game. I’ll check out the video review. I played the original a couple of years ago and always planned to do the second game (both on the PS1). Playing the second on the Switch is much more convenient, but I’m still not sold on the new look. I do love a good retro game and the graphics that come along with them. Decisions, decisions….

Re: Zelda's SNES Soundtrack 'A Link To The Past' Joins Nintendo Music, Here's Every Song Included

GravyThief

My first experience of a Zelda game, and Zelda music. Absolute classic. This is why Zelda was my favourite game series. Until BotW that is. But that’s another story.

I love the artwork from the manual for this game too. I’d love it if they made a traditional 2D (or even 3D) Zelda game that looked like this artwork. They have the power now, but instead they go with that yucky plastic look of Link’s Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom.

Re: Opinion: Nintendo, Let Us Buy The Games Being Delisted From Switch Online

GravyThief

I don’t agree with the argument of Nintendo wanting to drive people to NSO. I got the expansion pack subscription for £25. Based on previous VC pricing, all it would take is the purchase of about 4 games (depending on the system) to make that up. If people weren’t going to subscribe anyway, then they’ve not lost anything, BUT I imagine lots of subscribers would also buy the odd VC title. I know I would.

Re: Anniversary: HAL Laboratory Is 45 Years Old Today

GravyThief

How does the HAL/Nintendo ownership work? Do HAL or Nintendo own the IP to Kirby? And how much of HAL does Nintendo own?

I’m not the biggest fan of Kirby (or Smash Bros!), but I must say Planet Robobot is one of the best platformers I’ve ever played. I’m not even sure what it was about it that I liked so much. I’m guessing the excellent hidden bits, as well as going around in robots smashing everything up. That will usually do it!
