Re: UK Charts: Metal Gear Solid 3 And Gears Of War Shake Up The Top Ten

GravyThief

@Slideaway1983 I assume this must include Code in a Box sales, as Shinobi on Switch didn’t get a proper physical release in the UK did it? Checking Amazon UK, I only see the code option for Switch. Also, as these are the UK charts, this won’t be the LRG release of Shinobi as LRG don’t release games in the UK. It looks like in the UK Sega released Shinobi.

Re: New Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Physical Switch Release Spotted

GravyThief

I’ve just checked Amazon US and that particular listing is now showing as temporarily out of stock. So either loads of people bought it (and we’ll soon have an answer as to whether it’s genuine or not) or the listing was a mistake and Amazon have taken it down while it gets updated or whatever.

Re: Forget Silksong, This New Terminator 2D Overview Trailer Looks Stupidly Good

GravyThief

@Daggot it would be yes. But from memory any time I’ve encountered a boss rush, it’s either as a cheap way to prolong the end of a game before you get to fight the real final boss, or the bosses don’t become available in a separate boss rush mode until you’ve defeated them once in the main game/story. By which point I have no desire to practice or fight them again.

Still, I’m guessing some people must enjoy them because they crop up in many games.

Re: Forget Silksong, This New Terminator 2D Overview Trailer Looks Stupidly Good

GravyThief

Looking good, although I’ll probably end up just doing story mode. I’ve never really been that into playing levels over and over again unless there’s an incentive to 100% a level and (crucially) it’s enjoyable to do so. Also I’m not sure I’ll be into those other modes. I don’t think I’ve ever once thought “yes! I love a boss rush!”. I also hope the stealth sections aren’t too frequent. I’m really not into stealth, or as videogames translate it, crouching and crawling through games.

Re: Where To Pre-Order LEGO Game Boy

GravyThief

@Shadeon_Koopa I’m positive it was available when it was first announced. I suspect it’s already out of stock. I hear you normally get little extras when pre-ordering direct from Lego so maybe it’s proven more popular from there than other outlets.

Re: Nintendo Was The Only One Making Steady Revenue On NES, Says Capcom Vet

GravyThief

Nintendo’s cartridge business model from the 80s and 90s was terribly one-sided. I’m pretty sure they even got fined for it afterwards for it being anti-competitive. But they were in a dominant position at the time and abused it as such.

It is also part of the reason why Sony was so successful with the PS1 and the N64 performed so badly in comparison to the NES and SNES. Sony purposefully made their format and business model much more attractive to third parties, helped by the use of CDs of course. And Nintendo paid the price.

Still, alls well that ends well.

Re: Random: Final Fantasy 14 Director Thinks "Aspiring" Game Devs Should Play Echoes Of Wisdom

GravyThief

This game just makes me worried that all future 2D/top-down Zelda games will follow this formula. I hated it.

Just like BotW and TotK make me worried that all future 3D Zelda games will follow that formula. Which they probably will.

God how depressing. Zelda has been my favourite gaming franchise since I first played A Link to the Past. I’m just going to go for a little cry.

Re: Review: Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Controller - The Return Of The King

GravyThief

“ Think of it like a WaveBird, but with rumble intact and without the extra space required for the AA batteries; the best of both worlds, then.”

Personally I’d much prefer it if this controller (and all modern wireless controllers for that matter) took AA batteries thank you very much. At least I’d know the battery life would still be fine 10, 20 years down the line.

Re: Random: Do You Remember This Utterly Insane Marketing Stunt For Super Mario Sunshine?

GravyThief

I loved Mario Sunshine at the time (and still do). I thought the graphics were amazing (still looks good, especially the heat haze on a CRT), and I loved the holiday/sunshine setting and playing around with the water gun. The only annoyance I recall were the blue coins. Not that there were 30 (I think?) per level, more that it didn’t track which ones you’d collected so if you were missing only a few and used a guide to get the rest you had to go through locations for all 30 of them until you found them. Mario Odyssey is the same with its purple coins.

Re: Pokémon Fan Loses "20 Years Worth Of Data" After Performing Switch 2 Transfer

GravyThief

@PLATINUM7 thanks for the explanation. That’s so very Nintendo, but also quite impressive at the same time. Whether by accident or design, you can transfer your Pokemon from as far back as the early 2000s to today.

Does it go back to the GB/GBC games? Could you transfer them to the GBA games on a GBA? Or would you use Fire Red / Leaf Green on GBA and Heart Gold / Soul Silver on the DS to get Pokemon from those games?

Re: Piggyback's Metroid Prime Art Book Delayed Until October, Pre-Orders Live

GravyThief

Shame there’s not much text (from what I can tell). I much prefer a book that has lots of lovely artwork AND lots of text to read, talking about the art, the artists, the development of the games or whatever.

There is a really good art book for Fighting Fantasy gamebooks called Magic Realms which gets the mix spot on in my opinion. There are loads of full page, full colour pieces of artwork, as well as multiple pages containing lots of smaller illustrations, but crucially it also has pages of text talking about the artists themselves, their background, how they got the commissions, them talking about specific artworks, the books themselves etc. It makes it a much more appealing book and it lasts longer too.

Other good examples are the Visual Compendiums or Box Art collection books from Bitmap Books. They have loads of lovely artwork, pixel art, scans of book art etc, but again there is a fair amount of text to read about it all as well.

Re: Review: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - The Best Way To Play, But 'Zelda Notes' Sucks

GravyThief

Does this plug into a Switch 1 and work? Reason I ask, I don’t have this game for the Switch (I played it on Wii U), and I was thinking of getting it, but at some point in the future I’ll get a Switch 2 and want to benefit from the Switch 2 upgrades.

I know I can upgrade the Switch 1 version of the game, but I like that this has the upgrade on the cart.

Re: Review: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller - A New Benchmark In Comfort And Design

GravyThief

C’mon, test the d-pad properly Nintendo Life. It isn’t difficult. You don’t need to wait “weeks and months”. All you have to do is play a 2D platformer with it. Mario World. Do a couple of levels. You’ll be able to tell straight away.

From what you say, it sounds like it isn’t fixed, but before I spend £75 on a controller, I’d like a review to confirm this.

Re: Nintendo Shares Video Detailing New N64 Features For Switch Online

GravyThief

Im annoyed the CRT filter is locked to the Switch 2. I can’t play N64 games on the Switch 1 via NSO as they just look too clean and clear. I know that sounds weird but they just don’t look right like that. It really benefits N64 games to me blurrier and from that little video the CRT filter looks quite good.

Re: Hellblade Looks To Be Getting A Limited Run Physical Switch Release

GravyThief

I might have to get this. I got the standard physical release on PS4. Despite it making my PS4 Pro sound like a jet engine (which thankfully I could mostly ignore as I played it with headphones as you’re supposed to), it was a great game. I’ve not played the Switch version but I like the idea of having it on Switch and playing through it again.

Re: Zelda Fans Are Concerned About The Free Switch 2 Updates, But Don't Worry

GravyThief

I never understood all the fuss about the frame rates in these two games. I definitely noticed the hitches, and I definitely notice the difference between 30fps and 60fps, but was it really that bad?

I was more put off by the games themselves. Link’s Awakening was just lacklustre, and I thought Echoes was very dull and not a Zelda game at all. No improvements to frame rates will solve those issues.

Re: Limited Run's Switch 2 Numbered Releases Will Reportedly Include The "Full Game On The Cartridge"

GravyThief

As I suspected in the last article. Sega would have been the driving force behind the game-key card release for their game. While I’m not the biggest fan of LRG, I do buy the odd game from them so this is good to hear. The proof will be when they release a Switch 2 game though. I also suspect they’ll increase the price of their releases, if they’re having to pay more for the game cards.

Re: Nintendo Showcases Switch 2's Fancy New Battery Charge Settings

GravyThief

It’s about time we had a standard set of lithium batteries. Then we can easily replace them iwhen they inevitably deteriorate, with high quality branded ones too. Instead, we’re given daft options like ‘don’t use the full capacity of the battery so it lasts longer because you won’t be able to replace it in future’. Yeah thanks.
