Re: UK Charts: Mario Vs. Donkey Kong Slips Down The Ladder To Third

GravyThief

It really is strange seeing Nintendo doing so well in the UK that a Mario vs Donkey Kong game gets the number 1 spot. I know it’s been like this for years now with the Switch, but I still find it very strange! I vividly remember the 2000s where PS2 dominated in the UK and GameCube was lucky to get one game in the top ten.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Best Nintendo Remake Ever?

GravyThief

I’m surprised of all the adoration for Metroid Samus Returns in the article and comments. I thought it was awful. I actually quite liked the original, but the remake just felt horrible to play. They made the cardinal sin of only allowing analogue control for a 2D game (and a pretty bad analogue stick at that), but the game just didn’t feel nice to play, I’m not sure what it was. It was pretty dull as well, I couldn’t bring myself to finish it.

I’m also finding Mario RPG on Switch a bit lacklustre. I think the remake itself is great, but the underlying game is just meh. I remember playing the original 20 years or so ago, and didn’t finish it. Now I’m remembering why!

Can’t wait to play Metroid Prime Remaster though. That game is one of the best and the remaster looks absolutely sublime.

Re: Community: Nintendo Life Staff's Non-Game Highlights Of 2023

I have to agree with the opinion on the Netflix show Midnight Mass. I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of horrors, especially ones centred around religion, churches, priests etc. My wife’s the fan of that stuff (which is why I end up watching them 🤣), but there was just something so captivating about Midnight Mass. It was brilliant.

Re: Xbox Reiterates Interest In Bringing Game Pass To "Every Screen" Including Nintendo Platforms

GravyThief

This makes perfect sense from Microsoft’s perspective and I think is a good strategy. They’re clearly going all in on the streaming/subscription model for gaming, so they need to maximise that. Making Game Pass available on as many devices as possible is obvious when looking at it from that perspective.

The bigger question for me is whether they’ll continue to produce dedicated Xbox hardware after Series X/S. Only time will tell.

Nintendo should allow it if it ever comes to fruition. There’s minimal competition between the two (their subscriptions offer different things), and it would possibly generate hardware sales for them. Sony on the other hand….

Re: Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time's Water Temple Was Tough, But It Doesn't Deserve Its Reputation

GravyThief

Never understood the complaints myself. I completed it as a teenager back in the day with no guide. I just remember it being a clever and well designed dungeon, another one to add to the long list of excellent dungeons from A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time.

I miss the dungeons from those games where you have to use the map and think vertically about where rooms sit on top of one another to solve them.

Re: Soapbox: Losing Control - Why Zelda’s ReDead Strike Fear Into Our Souls

GravyThief

Mention of the Shadow Temple reminds me what great dungeons Ocarina of Time had. And the sheer number of them too. Both Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time were the pinnacle of Zelda dungeons for me (and pinnacle of Zelda games for that matter).

100+ shrines in BotW but no dungeons was a massive disappointment. Sad to hear TotK is basically the same.

Re: Anniversary: Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Is 10 Years Old Today

GravyThief

I don’t recall much about this game, but I do recall that I absolutely loved it and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I wasn’t a fan of the graphical style (the original SNES game looks much better in my opinion). I didn’t like the ‘rent a tool’ mechanic - what did it really add to the game? And I have some recollection of a weird octopus with its offspring or something like that (wtf?!!). But despite this, I loved the game. I think it was the wall merging mechanic, which was great and unique, and the music, which was fantastic. It probably helped it felt familiar and I hold the original game in such high regard too.

Re: 56 Switch Games You Should Pick Up In Nintendo's Black Friday Sale (Europe)

GravyThief

I just bought the Castlevania Collection, with some gold coins cost me a whopping £1.08. Can’t say fairer than that! Hopefully the classic Doom games go on sale again soon, love me some classic Doom.

Just got Broken Sword 5 for like £1.50 too. I normally prefer physical but can’t ignore it at that price! Also had to get Gorogoa, looks awesome.

Re: Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition Finally Blasts Onto Switch Next Month

GravyThief

I always get confused between which one this is: Outer Wilds or Outer Worlds.

I’m so glad this is releasing physically next year. I’ve managed to not play this game yet but I think it sounds super interesting. I’ve been waiting for a physical release and here we are. Now I just hope this isn’t being picked up by one of these annoying limited run places.

Re: Surprise! The 3DS Is Getting A Brand New Physical Release Next Week

GravyThief

@Sun_wukong not all of us want to do that. I looked into it a while back and not only is it a faff to do, but it’s irreversible. There’s no way I’d want to do it to my limited edition Zelda 3DS consoles.

Not that I’m bothered about this game in particular, but I do have some other USA region 3DS games I’d like to play. I’m on the lookout for a US 3DS but they seem quite hard to come by in the UK.

Re: Poll: What's Your Switch Controller Of Choice For Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

GravyThief

I’ve only just joined the Switch party, and I was very disappointed that Metroid Dread didn’t allow the d-pad for movement. Made the game much less enjoyable for me (but still a good game). I’m also surprised the 2D retro sections of Odyssey don’t either, but at least they’re only a small part of the game.

One thing I like about the PS4 is the standard controller has a great d-pad and from my experience all 2D games used it. Hopefully Metroid Dread is an outlier as I experience more 2D games on Switch.

I’m glad Super Mario Wonder allows the dpad.

Re: Random: It's Zelda, Not Beyoncé, Who's Apparently Contributing To UK Inflation

GravyThief

Isn’t it just the maths? TotK has sold lots in the past month in the UK, and its RRP will be higher than the average RRP of games from before then (selling at full price when most games don’t). So when looking at the numbers, it’s helped to drive up the average price of video games during that period.

And if videogames have helped contribute to the overall inflation figure for this period, then technically yes, it’s helped drive up inflation.
