Re: Footage Of Perfect Dark's Cut Feature 'Perfect Head' Emerges Online

GravyThief

@liveswired so is there a modified rom of this game available that has the feature reinstated? As in I can take a picture with the GB Camera and upload it into the game via the transfer pak? I have all that stuff (and an Everdrive 64), so could actually do it. I just didn’t realise there was a version of the game that had the feature reinstated.

Re: Feature: Super Mario Kart At 30: How 16-Bit Limitations Created A Franchise-Defining Mechanic

GravyThief

I don’t know if it’s nostalgia speaking, but I’ve never enjoyed later Mario Kart games more than this one. I really like it’s tight handling and narrower tracks.

Mario Kart tracks these days just feel too wide and long in comparison. It’s less about skilful and tight driving and more about the items. Plus I don’t like all the different vehicles, tyres, kites on the back or whatever.

Re: Nintendo Prepares For 3DS & Wii U eShop Closure With Scheduled Maintenance

GravyThief

I hear all the talk about adding funds to your Switch, but if you don’t have a Switch (like me) will the balance add website still work that’s mentioned here:

https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Support/Nintendo-3DS-2DS/Usage-/Nintendo-eShop/How-to-Add-Funds-in-Nintendo-eShop-Using-Credit-Cards-1626660.html

Using the balance add link here, currently I can add funds to my account that I can spend in the 3DS eShop. I can add funds either via PayPal OR an eShop card (called Pre-paid code on here).

Will this still work after 29th August? For both PayPal AND eShop codes?

A user on here has said it will, but I’ve never seen any comms from Nintendo explicitly say this, nor any news site say it. They all just say ‘you can still add funds via your Switch’, which doesn’t help me.

Re: Random: We've Been Waiting Over Half A Decade For A "New" Mainline Zelda Game

GravyThief

Unfortunately all this extra time is being used to add even MORE ingredients to carry round in your magical bottomless ingredients satchel, so you can cook even MORE food dishes. There is also extra delay because the magical bottomless ingredients satchel is being used by other open world games so they have to wait until it becomes available again. Geralt doesn’t like sharing apparently.

Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Reminds Nintendo Fans About 3DS & Wii U eShop Closure Dates

GravyThief

What do they mean by ‘points’? Points was a Wii thing wasn’t it, that closed ages ago? 3DS and Wii U was all about £??

What I’m confused about is whether I can still add funds via the website after 29th August to use for purchases on my 3DS? And if so, can I only purchase direct or can you still add funds this way from eShop cards?

It’s all a confusing mess to be honest! I don’t have a Switch so can’t add funds that way.

Re: Random: This Incredible Super NES Manual Archive Will Get You All Nostalgic

GravyThief

@Orokosaki thanks for taking an interest in what I do, I really appreciate it.

I do read many of them. I have them all on my phone, and every time I play a retro game (which is 95% of what I play considering how uninspired modern games are), if I have the manual there, I read it.

As for only real geeks collecting the physical manuals. I think what you mean is only real geeks with lots of disposable income and space would collect the physical manuals, considering there are over 800 for US SNES alone. And they’d also have to have unusual collecting tastes, to collect only the manuals.

So I’ll stick to being a geek (with cash to spare for certain complete in box games) reading my PDF manuals, cheers.

Re: Pokémon Happy Meals To Return To McDonald's In The UK

GravyThief

My 2 young daughters recently discovered McDonald’s Happy Meals (we managed over 4 years before they did!). We’ve had some naff toys that they’ve enjoyed, but they know about Pokémon thanks to me so we’ll definitely have to get them one of these each.

They also know who Mario is (again, thanks to me!) so whenever they next do Mario Happy Meals I’ll have to get them those too.

Re: Feature: Remembering Klonoa's Dreamy GBA Platformers - Empires, Champions, And Puzzles

GravyThief

Having played Empire of Dreams recently after thoroughly enjoying the PS1 and PS2 games, I can confirm this entry holds its own with its 2.5D brethren. Which is why I made sure I got myself a physical copy of the game, despite it not being the cheapest.

There’s just something about the Klonoa games I find hugely appealing. The platforming is some of the best around, and it requires real skill in the later levels to get 100% (in all the games). But the music as well. It has a sort of dreamy melancholy vibe, I don’t think there’s another game series with a soundtrack like it.

Re: It's Official, Wonder Boy Collection Is Out On 3rd June

GravyThief

So if I’ve understood this correctly, to get the additional 2 games you have to spend an extra £80 or £130 to get one of the silly collectors’ editions from Stupidly Limited Games? Sorry I mean Strictly Limited Games?

Oh wait, I didn’t see they come with a sticker sheet. Sold!

Re: A Bunch Of NIS America Games Get Huge Price Cuts On 3DS (Europe)

GravyThief

@WCB yeah it’s on for £30. The UK physical game goes for £100+ these days, so £30 is good value I suppose, I just can’t bring myself to spend that much on a digital game that might go away in the near future through no fault of my own. I think I’d rather take the hit on the physical game, at least I’d be guaranteed to be able to still play it 10+ years in the future and I’d be able to sell it if I wanted to.

Re: Best Castlevania Games On Nintendo Consoles

GravyThief

That Castlevania Legacy of Darkness box art is just asking for a Box Art Brawl (if not done already). Although I’m sure my fellow readers will somehow vote for that one to win.

And as for the N64 games, I actually quite like them. I do have a soft spot for early 3D games (I like the experimentation before they got to grips with 3D game design) and the music is so atmospheric.

Re: PSA: You Might Not Need To Unbox The New Smash Bros. amiibo To Use It

GravyThief

I remember this being a selling point for the Shovel Knight Amiibo back when that first released. Maybe they’re doing it as a cost cutting measure. Is there really a need for it anyway? I guess it was to stop people scanning them in store without buying them, but would that really make a huge impact on sales? I’m sure the main reason people buy them is to collect or because they like having the figures.

Re: Talking Point: Can It Really Be 10 Years Since Fire Emblem: Awakening Saved The Series?

GravyThief

Awakening doesn’t have Dorrrrrrcas, so by default it isn’t the best FE game. Also, while I enjoyed Awakening it set FE down a path I don’t enjoy. Fates was absolutely horrendous, but Shadows of Valentia looks better so I’ll give that a play at some point.

I’m really not into the whole creating your avatar thing either. You just end up with the most generic looking characters ever.

Re: Feature: How Limited Run's New Engine Respects The Legacy Of Classic Games

GravyThief

While I can’t really argue with the fact they bring out games physically that otherwise wouldn’t get a physical release, it’s all irrelevant. Due to their time limited or quantity limited releases, you just end up with overpriced copies for sale on the second hand market.

And I don’t order their games from them at the time of release because I’m in the UK. The games just aren’t worth the price when you factor in postage and possible import duty. It would be nice if they could open a distribution centre here in the UK and/or Europe.

Thankfully, for retro releases, I’ll always have the option of playing on original hardware via Everdrives or copied discs.

Re: The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Has Sold Over 500,000 Copies Worldwide

GravyThief

I have my Switch copy all wrapped and ready to play… when I actually buy a Switch!

I couldn’t miss out on this so had to buy it ready for whenever I end up buying a Switch. I recently played Apollo Justice and am currently close to finishing Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. I’ve then got Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice to play. Hopefully by that point I’ll finally own a Switch and be able to play this.

I do love the Ace Attorney games, glad this one has sold well. I wish we got it over here on the 3DS though.

Re: Feature: Hot Zelda: Link To The Past Takes From '90s Game Mags, 30 Years Later

GravyThief

I can’t decide whether this or OoT are my favourite Zelda games, but it doesn’t matter, I love this game and always will. I much prefer a smaller, denser world filled with puzzles and dungeons and things to do, rather than a vast empty world where you just run for long distances as the billions of weapons you are somehow carrying crumble and rust the moment you pull them out.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

GravyThief

I’m in a similar predicament. I want to play DQ for the first time, but where should I start?

I have all the DS/3DS games (bar 10 obviously) and XI on the PS4. I’ll probably start with 4, as I really like the ‘pixel but 3D’ look of the DS games, and it’s the earliest in the series that I have. Although 5 tempts me as it just sounds like it’s one of the best, if not the best, in the series.

I just know that it will take me literal years to play through 4 to 11 and I’ll probably want breaks in between, but I owe it to myself to at least complete one of them.

Re: Random: Here's Why Nintendo Doesn’t Want You Using The Word "Nintendo" To Describe Video Games

GravyThief

This was definitely an American thing. Nobody here in the UK ever referred to any games console as a ‘Nintendo’, likely because most kids didn’t really know much about the NES at the time. All we had were Master Systems, Mega Drives and computers like the C64, Spectrum, Amiga and so on. I don’t recall ever using ‘SEGA’ as a noun either, like ‘I’m playing my SEGA’, but maybe other children did.

Hey, we never even used to call them ‘Videogames’. It was ‘Computer Games’ and I still refer to them as that even to this day.

Re: The 3DS Is Getting Another Physical Release This Year, And It's A Pun On 'Vagrant Story'

GravyThief

@RupeeClock how do you get around the region locking on the 3DS? Is it hacking or is there another way?

I’ve looked into the various hacks over the years, but from what I can tell you can’t easily reverse it once done and I’m not sure I want to hack any of my 3DS consoles. I’ve wanted to buy a US console for ages but never seem to find one. I have a few of the games that only released physically in the US but as yet haven’t been able to play them!

Re: Andro Dunos 2 Switch Physical Edition Pre-Orders Fly Into View

GravyThief

@RupeeClock ha, my order was on exactly the same day! My order says ‘In Preparation’, which I think is different to what it said originally so hopefully that’s some progress. Not had issues with them before so I’m sure it will be fine, I’m just keen to get my hands on the game. Also I’m a bit nervous about import duty, it will be my first order from abroad since Brexit.

Re: Ace Attorney Trilogy Will Be Discontinued On Mobile And Replaced With Console Port Version

GravyThief

I’ll always have a soft spot for the first Ace Attorney game and Ghost Trick on iOS. I don’t think it was the trilogy of Ace Attorney, just the first one, so must have been an earlier release that’s long since been de-listed.

Anyway, it was these versions that got me into these games before I owned a DS or 3DS, and I now own all Ace Attorney games on DS (as well as Ghost Trick). They’re such great games, and they work well on smartphones so makes sense they’ve released them there. I definitely recommend Ghost Trick on iOS to anyone who can’t play it on DS or isn’t willing to fork out the price on the second hand market.
