Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (27th December)

CoastersPaul

Finally getting around to the Super Mario RPG remake after getting it as a gift for myself - I bounced right off the original by the first dungeon, almost gotten back to there; we'll see if the changes and fresh coat of paint are enough, I hope, to hold my attention.
Outside of the Switch, lately I've been obsessed with Kingdoms of the Dump, a literal garbage RPG. Highly recommend if you like Earthbound's humor and can stomach constant trash puns! It's also got some platforming in the world and action commands in battle like the Mario RPG series.
Its kickstarter, forever ago, was just short of the console port stretch goals, but IIRC they didn't rule it out entirely. Right now they're pretty focused on updates and fixes for the PC version, but I'm hoping they can get around to a Switch port eventually if it does well enough, I think it'd be a pretty good fit!

Re: Final Fantasy 9's 25th Anniversary Is Here, But There's Nothing On Rumoured Remake

All I'd really want is the original higher-res backgrounds, not just upscaled from the PSX compression that has haunted us ever since... I know some are out there! and it hurts to not have them, but Square probably lost a bunch somehow anyway...
That and touched-up higher-res cinematics. There's part of me that would love to see FF9's world in full 3D (but FF14's already giving me a tase of that!) but I do think there's some artistic framing in the prerendered backgrounds I'd hate to lose and I don't entirely trust Squeenix to handle it just right.
Oh, and maybe a little overhaul of Trance; at least make it fill more in boss battles and less against random encounters.

Re: Elden Ring's Switch 2 Physical Version Seemingly Tarnished By 'Game-Key Card' Release

CoastersPaul

Game key cards just seem like all of the inconvenience of physical versions [having to put the cart in], without any of the convenience of physical versions [not having to download]. Why?
If you just want the box itself as a collector's item, codes-in-a-box gave you that without the extra inconvenience!
If you want to lend out your digital games ... Nintendo literally announced a solution for that last week, and it doesn't even require a Switch 2! Now, there's a little finagling in that you have to bring the actual Switches together ... but this seems a bit extreme as a solution.
Just don't see any point, myself.

Re: Final Fantasy 9 Remake Hopes Rise As Square Enix Teases Anniversary Projects

CoastersPaul

I just want higher-res backgrounds. Not upscaled from the PSX-crunched ones - recreated from the original files, if any survived. There are some higher-res renders out there on a few of the artists' portfolios, and they're gorgeous! FMVs could use some touch ups or remaking as well.
There's been 3D re-imagining of FF9's Alexandria in the last FFXIV expansion, and it's great; I'd begrudgingly accept a full 3D remake. But I think there is some really artistic framing in the pre-rendered backgrounds you might lose.

The 3D models are the most blatantly of-its-time, if impressive for PSX, and I think those could be upgraded freely without messing anything up as long as they keep the right cartoony style.

Re: A New Tomodachi Life Game Is Coming To Switch Next Year

CoastersPaul

I think a lot of people don't get just how big, for as weird and niche it is, Tomodachi Life was. It's sold over 6 million copies! That's... a couple Metroids Dread worth. 😬
Which makes me feel a little bad for Metroid more than anything. But I can definitely see why Nintendo considers this a big announcement. It was!

Re: Final Fantasy Creator’s Next Script Is Already Done

@roboshort I feel like game writing has enough constraints and challenges and pitfalls that "getting professional writers" with no experience with games doesn't actually result in better-written games. Getting them to do some world-building and then using that as a selling point is ... probably about the best that's ever gone?

Must be a lot of pressure being the last of the old DQ guard, hope he can keep going as long as he wants but not work himself too hard.
I'm both excited and a little afraid for XII. There's definitely directions I'd like to see DQ change in, and I think it could grow to fill a classic FF shaped hole in my heart I haven't been getting enough of from FF lately. (Music not being bad MIDIs will of course be a huge upgrade from the get-go.) But I hope they don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Dragon Quest being a more consistent series has its own charms, and I don't want all of that to be lost in chasing something new!
