IMO the HD version made some changes I don't like to the art style, if they did ever release it... I suppose they don't need to what with NSO but a "classic" and "enhanced" graphics option would be nice!
I do like the concept of the Japanese one, but the execution of it doesn't quite sell me on it over NA/Europe. Feel like it needs to be just a little more dramatic.
Team Asano finally came up with a normal videogame title and everyone hates it. I swear, they'd say The Legend of Zelda was an awful name if it wasn't an established series.
All I'd really want is the original higher-res backgrounds, not just upscaled from the PSX compression that has haunted us ever since... I know some are out there! and it hurts to not have them, but Square probably lost a bunch somehow anyway... That and touched-up higher-res cinematics. There's part of me that would love to see FF9's world in full 3D (but FF14's already giving me a tase of that!) but I do think there's some artistic framing in the prerendered backgrounds I'd hate to lose and I don't entirely trust Squeenix to handle it just right. Oh, and maybe a little overhaul of Trance; at least make it fill more in boss battles and less against random encounters.
Given the non-open world games they've helped out on, I figure there's also gotta be a degree of "we've got all these artists with nothing to do between when we need them on the big games, might as well hire them out to make some decorative items so we can keep them on"
If they ever do release 14 it's probably gonna be a massive install; doesn't make much sense to have a cartridge release for an online-only game with periodic gigantic patches. Might skip physical including game key cards altogether, probably for the best.
@sanderev I don't think a free tech demo game that was later followed with a bigger retail game counts as just "basically an ad" for it... at least at first, any more than Wii Sports was an ad for Wii Sports Resort. Now, granted, they did specifically put in a countdown, store link, and some very obscured easter eggs for the main game as/once Astro Bot released.
Can't believe they're targeting me personally by putting in every Mario character imaginable (or unimaginable) but still not, so far, Diddy Kong. Starting to give up hope for my boy. But still excited!
Game key cards just seem like all of the inconvenience of physical versions [having to put the cart in], without any of the convenience of physical versions [not having to download]. Why? If you just want the box itself as a collector's item, codes-in-a-box gave you that without the extra inconvenience! If you want to lend out your digital games ... Nintendo literally announced a solution for that last week, and it doesn't even require a Switch 2! Now, there's a little finagling in that you have to bring the actual Switches together ... but this seems a bit extreme as a solution. Just don't see any point, myself.
I just want higher-res backgrounds. Not upscaled from the PSX-crunched ones - recreated from the original files, if any survived. There are some higher-res renders out there on a few of the artists' portfolios, and they're gorgeous! FMVs could use some touch ups or remaking as well. There's been 3D re-imagining of FF9's Alexandria in the last FFXIV expansion, and it's great; I'd begrudgingly accept a full 3D remake. But I think there is some really artistic framing in the pre-rendered backgrounds you might lose.
The 3D models are the most blatantly of-its-time, if impressive for PSX, and I think those could be upgraded freely without messing anything up as long as they keep the right cartoony style.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership would be immediately better just from slightly quicker loading times. Similarly, Echoes of Wisdom being just so much more stable. Curious if the TTYD remakester could pull off 60 FPS on Switch 2; I think the shiny graphics were worth the stable 30 FPS for me, but I know plenty of people weren't happy.
I think a lot of people don't get just how big, for as weird and niche it is, Tomodachi Life was. It's sold over 6 million copies! That's... a couple Metroids Dread worth. 😬 Which makes me feel a little bad for Metroid more than anything. But I can definitely see why Nintendo considers this a big announcement. It was!
So basically a built-in version of those shaders mods? More toned down than some of them, really, I think for the best. Still a bit much for me though, I think.
Ah. I got a notification that they added Mario Wonder, and I was really confused because wasn't it already there 🤔 Must've been a wire crossed somewhere.
Loved this game, though I really hope this team gets a chance to make another M&L that can be even better from here. Maybe a bit more polished. I was able to get through it without really running into any bugs or glitches, don't think they're a huge obstacle for the typical experience, but man does it seem to have a lot of them on the edges 😛
Stop saying it's going to happen this week! Now Nintendo's going to push it off for another week to punish us for presuming to know their ways and keep us on our toes!!!
Brothership's an immediate 9, 10/10 if New Switch can load everything a second quicker. I don't think it's THAT bad, but it's definitely an easy pain point to latch on to.
@roboshort I feel like game writing has enough constraints and challenges and pitfalls that "getting professional writers" with no experience with games doesn't actually result in better-written games. Getting them to do some world-building and then using that as a selling point is ... probably about the best that's ever gone?
I love me a turn-based RPG, but I'm open to action as well. I just want a proper Party, in some form. And non-human looking characters again (outside of VII) would be nice!
Must be a lot of pressure being the last of the old DQ guard, hope he can keep going as long as he wants but not work himself too hard. I'm both excited and a little afraid for XII. There's definitely directions I'd like to see DQ change in, and I think it could grow to fill a classic FF shaped hole in my heart I haven't been getting enough of from FF lately. (Music not being bad MIDIs will of course be a huge upgrade from the get-go.) But I hope they don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Dragon Quest being a more consistent series has its own charms, and I don't want all of that to be lost in chasing something new!
I feel like an entirely straight remaster of Xenogears or maybe even FF Tactics would end up Looking sorta HD-2D by default. Might as well polish it a little from there, but I don't think they'd need the full conversion treatment.
I still need to get to this, might wait for the DLC then; got a ton of RPGs on my plate already between Mario & Luigi and Dragon Quest 3 and maybe Fantasian and-
Finished Prime yesterday, a few rough difficulty spikes for me (and I hate the permanently missable scans, had to settle for ~95% completion) but overall really enjoyed it! Would love to be able to play the sequels first. Still mad I didn't pick them up when the Wii prices were still reasonable.
I just wish different levels/types of the same items/enemies could be collapsed into one spot horizontally, and then you could select a different one from there - maybe by moving vertically instead?
@roy130390 First "walking simulator" to really simulate walking at this level 😛 But yeah, Kojima obviously loves movies, he's said some things, but if he really just wanted to make movies, I'm pretty sure he could at this point. He's clearly interested in game systems and what interactivity can bring to stories (or he wouldn't keep having them put in) as well as all the overwrought cinematic stuff. Sometimes the end result's unwieldy, it's certainly not for everybody, but I'm glad it exists.

I prefer both NA or JP to EU, but I think them splitting with the same art is letting EU cruise ahead.
