Re: Sonic Frontiers Director Excited About Next Game, Promises Even "Greater" Experience

CoastersPaul

General impressions I've gotten is that there's a pretty fun core in there with... some roughness around the edges, so I'm happy it sounds like they're planning to stick to that formula for a bit and make it better now that they've got a base to work from.

Hope Pokémon can do the same thing instead of randomly taking some steps back because they had to start working on the next one before they could take any lessons from the last one :/

Re: Review: Live A Live - A Brilliantly Faithful Remake Of A Unique And Influential JRPG

@Gracetrack From what I've heard, Chrono Trigger had a pretty rough development that didn't come together until the end, and the Dream Team was largely a marketing gimmick. But there probably has been some over-correction; the DQ and FF influences are obvious, and Toriyama's character design is, of course, even more so. A shame CT has to come up in contention for the release of two much more obscure games.

@Shredderlovespizza As someone who generally just plays turn-based stuff, Neo TWEWY's my favorite take on action RPG with way too many characters, because it takes it down to one button (of your choice, based on which move you equipped) to switch characters and use their move ... and then eventually you get up to 6 buttons to press and it's ridiculous but somehow just manageable, and it feels great when it works.

Re: Video: What Legend Of Zelda Games Can We Expect To Fill The Gap In 2022?

CoastersPaul

@RubyCarbuncle People here are voicing their objections against paying $60 for a 9-year-old remaster of a 20-year-old game. And, fair!

But I never got to play Wind Waker. So as hard of an ask as $60 is... I'm definitely not paying $90 to play the original on my Wii. And that disc was a killer deal compared to other prices I've seen! (I still curse my past self for not looking harder for it years ago - and also not picking up a Wii copy of Prime Trilogy when I saw it on shelves, before everyone started caring about Metroid again.)

It's possible buying a used Wii U and getting it on the e-Shop might actually come out to less than that. Still probably over $60, though... for one game.

So if Nintendo actually wants my money, they should probably just move it over to the Switch as well. And everyone who's already played it - well, they don't have to buy it again!

Re: Nintendo Hypes Pokémon Scarlet And Violet's Rich Open World As An "Evolutionary" Step In The Series

Really weird they haven't been rushing to change up wildly selling kids' games.

Man, growing up on Wii and PC, BotW was my first time having to deal with camera controls. I'm sure kids these days can handle it, but it's easy to forget how much of a jump that is for people not used to it. I think that's more why they stuck with fixed views for so long than anything.

Would love to be catered to more, but ultimately I'm not the main audience. There's plenty of meatier RPGs out there; Pokémon is, more than anything, a gateway.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Games Of 2021

Surprised - but very happy - Neo TWEWY made it to the top 10 here. Sad it didn't sell better - I think it's super underrated - but easily my personal GOTY!

Then again, the only other things I've really played were Metroid Dread (have enjoyed what little I've played so far, but had trouble keeping at it) and Animal Crossing 2.0, so hardly an exhaustive list

@EliteXeos It literally was, and they weren't? About as neutral as here, really, with commenters chiming in about how greedy and arrogant Xecuter had gotten - enough even the rest of the hacking community was kind of glad to see them go: https://kotaku.com/1847979149

Kotaku has its problems, absolutely, but so much of the hate I see for it seems so disconnected from anything real. It's not gonna kill anyone (okay, maybe the excess number of ads legitimately might! ) to occasionally see the articles themselves instead of repeating a whole mythos mostly based on some particularly awful headlines getting bounced around social media.

Re: Metroid Dread Producer Hopes Fans Look Forward To "Future Episodes" Once The Current Story Arc Concludes

CoastersPaul

Just hopes this doesn't mean they're sidelining Samus. Especially not killing her off - her becoming a commander/mentor for a future protagonist could be cool, actually! But she absolutely should stay around in some form; I think she's much more crucial to the Metroid brand than the Metroids themselves are. (Though I guess they could always bring her back from anything with clone nonsense.)

Re: Soapbox: It's The Summer Of Visual Novels On Switch, And It's Just The Beginning

Can't wait for Neo TWEWY, a heavily voiced little VN with a whole action JRPG in between 😛

TWEWY definitely had more direct VN roots, but even those bits could be more dynamic than you might expect... which was an important lesson: full VNs can and do still look cooler than I'd taken for granted! I do still tend to prefer other gameplay on the side, but there's a lot I've overlooked.

Neo TWEWY's another stepped removed though, more pushing the TWEWY style even further, and it’s absolutely sick. The comic frames get sketched out and wiped from the screen (quick enough to just be cool instead of a distraction), there's so many more unique reaction shots (even if the main characters get literally no more, I think they're already as expressive as you could possibly need), anyway, I'm so hyped!

Re: Square Enix Has Released A Demo For NEO: The World Ends With You

CoastersPaul

@BloodNinja Ha. Those are rookie numbers! I've played 3 Zeldas at once (ragequit Twilight Princess for a while after I just couldn't get the second mandatory motion control fishing done, finally started Link to the Past since NSO made that easy and liked it enough to get several dungeons in, then got Link's Remakening for more 2D Zelda goodness, beat that, and then went back to beat TP, still need to finish up LttP sometime), and another time 3 Final Fantasies at once (VI was my first but I hit a point where I needed to grind, picked up IX on sale after recommendations and got absolutely hooked, XIV the MMO is far more game than I could possibly finish and I'm still well in the bits under the free trial.)

Anyway, been enjoying the demo so far, as someone who never played the original.

Re: Metroid Dread Is GameStop's Top Pre-Order Following E3 2021

CoastersPaul

@Gamepro500 There’s been Legends of Zelda with Link but no Zelda to be found, pretty sure they can always make more Metroids without needing Metroids!

And even so, "marking an end to that story arc" about "the uncanny relationship between these Metroids and the heroine Samus" doesn't even imply an end to the Metroids themselves! It could just as easily mean no more starring Samus (dumb), or simply that they're less central to the plot, or at least less connected to Samus personally. And even if they are finally ended, totally for real this time...
... they're games, they can absolutely find an excuse to bring them back.

The end of a story arc isn't the end of a series, it's a possibility to start new arcs. Or fill in the rest of the timeline. Who cares? If people are actually buying them again and the developers want to and Nintendo okays them, there's nothing stopping them from making more later!

Re: Final Fantasy IX Is Being Turned Into An Animated Series

CoastersPaul

I feel like it's already the one that feels the most like a (great) show. It's cartoony, yes, and there’s plenty of comic relief, but it’s a surprisingly dark game under there; I hope it doesn't get toned down too much for the apparent audience, but I think there's room to pull it off - that's the vibe of a lot of kids' cartoons these days. So I'm tentatively very exciting.

If nothing else, at least it's an excuse to get to talk to more people about Final Fantasy IX, which I love to bits.
