Re: Talking Point: Did All The Switch 2 Leaks 'Damage' Nintendo Or The Console's Reveal?

speedracer216

I don't think this was ever the intended time or way for the reveal. I think they were planning on waiting until April 2nd at which point they will have a huge, shocking, exciting, fun blow out of information and games!

I think this trailer was given now with little fanfare, simply so they could say "we revealed it". And not have leakers pushing the narrative. Unfortunately that means they're saving all their big punches and secrets for the REAL reveal in April.

Re: Nintendo Believes In "Giving Proper Credit" After Backlash Over Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

speedracer216

@Sonicka
Here's another way to look at it. Nintendo DID give them full credit for their work. Nobody deleted the credits from Donkey Kong Country Returns. Anytime you want to know who designed those levels and made that game, and find those credits. It's not like anyone actually reads all the credits at the end of the game anyway. The point is that there's proof in the wild so they can put it on their resume. So if an employer asks did you work on Donkey Kong Country Returns they can say yes. If an employer asked did you work on the HD remake they can say no.

These credits don't change the fact that they are credited on their original work.

Re: Nintendo Believes In "Giving Proper Credit" After Backlash Over Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

speedracer216

This doesn't bother me that much, but I do wish they would give more information. For example, who should be credited from the original game? If you rebuild the graphics from the grounds up, do original Graphics designers get credit? If you use completely different play testers, should you still just carve in copy those original credits with play testers who didn't do anything on the HD version?

But at the same time, level designers, well it's still the same levels! Seems like they would have a credit somewhere. You don't have to pay them, because you already paid them for their original work. But a credit would make sense.

Re: Sega Is "Evaluating" Its Own Netflix-Style Subscription Service

speedracer216

Subscriptions are terrible. I may be the minority these days, but they add up to so much money per month when you have four video services, two shipping services, two or three game services, music services etc. NO THANKS.

I'd rather miss the content then have to pay a monthly fee.

I'd rather just buy the games I want for a flat price and be done with it. Much cheaper that way... which is why they'd rather you subscribe for the rest of your life!

Re: Review: 8-Bit Adventures 2 (Switch) - A Well-Crafted Ode To Classic RPGs That Goes On A Bit

speedracer216

Why does every throwback RPG have to say that it was inspired by Chrono trigger? I don't believe any of you. LOL

and I sure hope it wasn't inspired by mother 3's plot because what they did to Lucas and his family was not meaningful, but merely sadistic and even icky. I personally hated it.

Anyway, haven't heard of the first game, but this looks interesting. Looks more 16bit than 8bit.

Re: EarthBound 30th Anniversary Merch Will Include A Giant Mr Saturn Plushie

speedracer216

@Kazman2007
I'm shocked how many people love the third one. I finally got to play it this year and HATED what the story did to Lucas and his family. It wasn't heartfelt, gut wrenching, or profound. To me it was just sickening. Icky. Emotionally abusive. Knowing that in an interview he said he wanted the player to feel betrayed, made me realize why they did it. But what a disappointment! I'll never play it again even though the gameplay Loop was as fun as ever. Thank goodness for Earthbound!

Now how do I import a giant Mr Saturn plush?

Re: Review: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (Switch) - Square Doesn't Drop The Ball, Just Some Frames

speedracer216

@phartsy
STORY (No spoilers here)
WHAT YOU MIGHT LIKE:

  • It's sort of like choose your own adventure since the character is a blank slate. Your father is a renowned hero... but goes missing so you embark on a journey to find him and save him if you can. Along the way, you learn a greater evil is afoot. Citizens of the world hope you find your father, but hope more that you stop the evil, but even MORE that you find their lost mcguffin-of-the-week.
  • It has a very significant tie to other Dragon Quest games that slowly yet suddenly reveals itself in the endgame. If you have played DQ1 or 2 or both, this will be especially meaningful. It even connects to DQ11
  • One major twist
  • Character customization means i child save the day with: Lucky (i name every hero), myself alongside, Batman (martial artist/ fighter), and Jean Grey (sage). How cool is that?

WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE:

  • Many side quests don't feed into the larger plot other than increasing your fame.
  • Your team has no dialog since they at customized, so not much characterization other than what you imagine.
  • It is simple: someone destroy the ambiguously motivated big bad before he destroys the world.

Personal: I am HUGE on story and character (Lufia 2 is my all time favorite, Earthbound, that kind of stuff), but somehow I loved this game. I think because the world is very alive and the twist that happens.
Hope that helps!

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake

speedracer216

Dragon Quest fans are nothing if not traditional. Count me among them who fought hard against them getting rid of traditional turn-based battles.

So more than most other series, their fans will want this to feel like it did on the Super Famicom remake if not the NES original. Random battles are surely less than they were on the nes, still an annoyance, but strangely nostalgic at the same time. Sounds like they did well with this one. Not sure I'll buy it since I have it on nes, snes, and Game Boy Color. But we'll see.

But for anyone who has never played it before, you are in for a treat.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Neva

speedracer216

@miwa
I wonder... because I like emotional/ mysterious games even is short. I think Dear Esther is a masterpiece. But Gris feel really flat to me. Too predictable. And movement wasn't very fun. I know it wasn't really a game in the sense of action or challenge, but beyond the art style, it didn't really do anything compelling or memorable.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Might Be Gearing Up For A GameCube Controller Comeback

speedracer216

@Coffee-Waffle
It's funny because I got GameCube on launch day so Charly I've been "cutting edge" in the past. But these days I get much more excited to buy SNES fans I've never played or never owned. It's my favorite system. Different strokes fur different folks, or even the same folks but in different phases of life!

Also, the GameCube controll is in my top two. I'm in for 10!

Re: Rumour: Multiple New Switch Bundles Are Apparently On The Way

speedracer216

@Giancarlothomaz
I think to call it aggressive would need bigger price drops.

I have 1 switch for me and 4 kids. We take turns. If they put Switch (even the original) at $200-$225 we would buy 4 more. But it's still the original $300 so we're waiting to see about Switch 2. Mario Wonder (which we already have) isn't enough to change that.

@SadPanda
I know I'm not winning anyone over. And if you read the whole article, he applies it to downloading roms too. (Not just buying roms). It doesn't belong to you, you can't have it. Simple as that.

Gamers debate this all the time and people basically decide:
1. I don't care, I'll do what I want.
2. It's not a big deal, no one's getting in trouble.
3. It's wrong.
People will justify whatever they want. I wish they would clarify the law though. Or create something like our LIBRARY system where it is easy access to the games. I think a lot of rom folks would rent them for a $1 or borrow from an official library.

Kind of like when napster took over the world... the record companies fought it, but then they changed their mode. Now I don't have to buy a $20 cd for one song. I can just get the one I want for $1! I buy way more music that way.

I think games would be the same, and then people wouldn't have to debate/feel bad for figuring out ways to play out of print games!

Re: Upcoming Emulation Handheld Rocks A Stunning Optional GameCube Theme

speedracer216

@LikelySatan
From that link:
Check out what the U.S. Copyright Office has to say about it:

“Under section 117, you or someone you authorize may make a copy of an original computer program if the new copy is being made for archival (i.e., backup) purposes only; you are the legal owner of the copy; and any copy made for archival purposes is either destroyed, or transferred with the original copy, once the original copy is sold, given away, or otherwise transferred.”

But selling that backup copy is another story, according to the U.S. Copyright Office:

“If you lawfully own a computer program, you may sell or transfer that lawful copy together with a lawfully made backup copy of the software, but you may not sell the backup copy alone. … In addition to being a violation of the exclusive right of distribution, such activity is also likely to be a violation of the terms of the license to the software. … You should be wary of sites that offer to sell you a backup copy. And if you do buy an illegal backup copy, you will be engaging in copyright infringement if you load that illegal copy onto your computer …”

Re: Upcoming Emulation Handheld Rocks A Stunning Optional GameCube Theme

speedracer216

@LikelySatan
Yes, it is illegal to download roms.
Read this: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/why-most-roms-are-illegal,37512.html#:~:text=While%20those%20sites%20were%20sharing,(which%20they%20usually%20are).

Highlights: Legal to make your own copy (must be destroyed when you get rid of original copy), illegal to get a copy from someone else (even if you own the original cart).

Emulators seem fine but obviously most people use them for roms but just don't care about legality. Why? Cuz "I want what I want".

I don't get why Nintendo Life keeps encouraging it.

Re: Soapbox: The Trauma Of Giygas & Growing Up In EarthBound

speedracer216

@ShonenJump121
No spoilers, but I was extremely let down by Mother 3. Just know that the creator said his goal was to make the player feel "betrayed". But not in the fun "twist" way. More like the "give you hope or some set of expectations then change them callously to make you feel upset and helpless". I didn't enjoy that feeling knowing it was forcibly orchestrated by the man behind the curtain. It made the plot and thus the player feel hollow and even sadistic at times.

Obviously a lot of people still like it, but I think those who love Earthbound are often disappointed, like I was. Fortunately, we'll always have Earthbound!

Re: Skies Of Arcadia-Inspired JRPG 'Sky Oceans' Bags A Release Date

speedracer216

@ScalenePowers
This is very well said. Probably worth an editorial here on Nintendo life.

Specifically on Sea of Stars, nearing the end of my own playthrough, I think they did themselves a disservice by advertising that way. Chrono Trigger just has its own feel. So while they scripted battles in a similar way (and people are tiny on the overworld map), that's about it. The puzzle structure is much closer to Lufia 2 or Golden Sun. The battles themselves are more like Mario RPG in a way. Etc etc. It's more like an amalgamation of many great ideas from the 16-bit era. It can stand on its own!
