Just leaving a note here for anyone that gets this and doesn’t like the sound of the keycaps bottoming out: I tried putting keyboard o-rings on them, but it doesn’t work well with the design of the switches. 2 o rings worked okay on the bean shaped caps, but not on the circular ones I actually use. It is interesting that a game key cards like Madden 26 have only the game key card version reduced in price. Nice! Maybe if I get back to playing this I will load it up on Switch 2. I played this a bit on Switch 1 in the summer after getting it on sale for $16. I did fall off of playing it after getting to a bit I found difficult and not realizing how the save system interacted with recovering your previous body. I think I could have not saved at a certain point and just tried a section again to not lose my upgrades. If I play again I may restart or maybe see if I can get through a boss I am at with no upgrades. There is always assist mode, but I’d rather not. There were some spots where the game dropped from 30 fps so hopefully that is not an issue on Switch 2.

When I am not distracted by SF6 I am playing Silksong which I think I still have a fair amount left in in spite of playing for 45 hours.
I think if I pick up a non-Nintendo platform in the future it would likely be a Windows PC or Windows PC handheld. I have a MacOS laptop but the selection of games on Steam for Mac is quite limited and generally overlaps a lot with Switch. People love the SteamDeck but I have some concerns about the selection still being limited or having issues due to the translation layers involved.
@kmtrain83 for the “simpler times” experience the Playdate console may be a good option. It is pricey though for what it is (probably due to it being produced by a small company at relatively low volume).
I love all these unique controllers we are getting now. I bought the 8bitdo leverless and have had fun trying it out on a few games. I’ve replayed some of Celeste with it and played bits of Silksong with it (beat Last Judge with it, but it may have caused me to take more tries than I otherwise would have). I’ve switched back to a pro controller for Silksong, but I may try it again with the leverless. I also bought Street Fighter 6 while it was on sale because I have been curious about getting in to fighting games. SF6 has nice tutorials so I’ve had fun with it in spite of the fact that I am new to it and therefore bad at it.
It is neat to see a controller that adds analog as an option. I could see this being good for games like Hades or TMNT: Splintered Fate where it might be nice to use separate fingers for right hand inputs while still having analog control. That said, I am not ready to splurge on another controller right now.
I’m still playing Silksong because boss fights and gauntlets take me so many tries. I think I am improving somewhat though. After I finish a fight I am always excited to keep going.
I’ve also been dabbling in learning fighting games via Street Fighter 6.
I’m definitely interested in this one. I may pick it up in the next few days if I get a chance to play it with a friend. Otherwise, it will be on my list of games to eventually pick up.
That is a neat fact. I am not sure I would call 1/400 of RAM “incredibly inefficient” though. If the text is constants in code files then this is how it would work naturally. When a program is loaded into memory all of the text that is included as constants in the code is loaded as well. Of course, you can also put text in separate files and have the program load those files at runtime as needed (which it sounds like SMG2 does).
I said about once a month, but a lot of them are indie games and are digital. I am curious with how popular games like Fortnite and Roblox are with kids if they will continue to play those kinds of games as they get older. I wonder if the kinds of games middle aged gamers like me like will decrease in popularity over time.
I’m still playing Silksong. I am about 40 hours in and just got to Act 2. It takes me a lot of tries on bosses and gauntlets, but somehow after finishing one I end up thinking “well, that wasn’t too bad.” I also bought the 8bitdo arcade controller (the leverless one). I replayed a bit of Celeste with it to get used to it, then picked up Street Fighter 6 while it was on sale in spite of the fact that I never got into fighting games in the past. I have to say Street Fighter 6 has a really nice tutorial and that has helped me understand it more than any fighting game I’ve tried before. I also ended up deciding to use the leverless for Silksong as well and I was okay enough with it that I decided I was going to beat the last boss of Act 1 with it and last night I finally did!
I wasn’t too excited for a new character, but now I think this looks really cool since it seems like there are ranged attacks. Curious how they’ll balance that.
I’m not sure I understand what arcade mode is. Is it no longer roguelike and you can just continue on or something? Edit: never mind, I clicked through and it seems like it is still roguelike but with some differences
I don’t play fighting games but I’ve considered getting the 8bitdo leverless for 2D games to see if I could teach myself to use it. I did try playing Celeste on a keyboard though and it was a bit rough. I could probably tweak some things from what I was doing with the keyboard in terms of mapping and hand position but it would take a lot of practice and I’d probably need to start with simpler games.
I think I am objectively worse at Silksong than many people. I’ve definitely spent 1-2 hours on individual bosses and gauntlets and I am still in Act 1 something like 25 or 26 hours in. It is always exciting when I finally get past the challenge though and I think I am getting better. I only played the original HK once all the way through and that save file had 55 hours on it.
I’m hoping to be able to get better generally so I don’t have to grind specific encounters as many times. So far my notes of things to remember when playing are:
keep my eyes on the boss/enemies (and keep track of hornet more in my peripheral vision)
first focus on dodging/surviving to learn patterns
once I know the patterns get more aggressive with attacks at the right moments, but never force attacks that aren’t there.
I also have heard people talk about tools. I am probably underutilizing those.
I have both Wii versions. I also have 3D All Stars (physical). I still kind of want these, but I think I’ll hold off in hopes of a bit of a sale. I’d want digital now though so sale may be unlikely. If I end up deciding that I am going to spend the time to really play through them again, I will probably buy these versions though. $70 seems like the new default price Nintendo is going with so it doesn’t really surprise me. They are two great games.
I am a bit stuck at a point where I think I need to do one of two gauntlets to proceed. I’ll get through them, but I don’t enjoy the gauntlets as much as the boss fights because multiple enemies makes it feel less like a pattern to recognize. (Of course each individual enemy has their patterns, but the way they combine together isn’t always predictable enough for me to have a clear strategy).
I’m over 10 hours into Silksong because I took the day off yesterday to play. I feel like I am just scratching the surface of it though. I played through the original in probably 2019 and only revisited it briefly a day before Silksong came out to refresh my memory a bit. If I had known it would take so long for Silksong I probably would have replayed it at some point.
I’m loving Silksong. I like how it is hard, but even when my health is running low in a fight I still feel like I have a chance because it is possible to avoid hits if I don’t make mistakes and getting my own hits in might allow me to fill my silk and heal. The original of course works similarly, but I think the way this mechanic works is what really hooks me on this game. The way it is all or nothing in Silksong enhances the risk/reward aspect of healing. Sound, visuals, etc. are all great as well of course.
I was a little surprised by one area that I think I was trapped in until I farmed some items from enemies in order to get the ability to escape. It was okay, but I think they should have required about half the number of items. It sort of worked in a way as a storytelling element though.
I ended up starting Pikmin 4 recently. I’ll probably stick with that until Silksong comes out at which point I will be dropping everything and playing it.
I had started Nier Automata around a month ago on Switch 1 and was enjoying it until I hit a part that really bugged me where there was a save point in the middle of a mission that I reflexively used and then got stuck without restorative items right before a boss. According to the web, there is supposed to be a vendor nearby too but they made him killable and I think he probably got caught in the crossfire. I’d gladly redo the mission from the beginning and try to get better, but I think my only options are to get really good and beat the boss with no items or lower the difficulty and essentially put it on autopilot to get through the boss. Unfortunately that choice has put me off of the game. Hopefully I will get back to it at some point.
It makes sense, but I knew the option was there so I changed it immediately. For other games that are different enough (BOTW/TOTK), I haven’t changed it (I didn’t realize the option existed in the Zelda games honestly, I guess I never looked for it).
I really enjoyed Hollow Knight when I played through it years ago. I’m excited to play the sequel when it comes out. If it shadow drops I will probably end up starting it in spite of the fact that I have quite a few games in progress right now.
I played around with it tonight and let the kids try it out. Liked how the HD Rumble gave the movement a tactile feel. I thought it was pretty neat overall. I think it is very reasonably priced, but I don’t plan to get it because I don’t think it is something I would play a lot. It seems like the kind of game that will be difficult to play casually online because the people that get into it will get very into it and become very skilled (which is great for them). Unless maybe Nintendo implements some kind of match making that tries to match skill levels.
I really recommend TMNT: Splintered Fate (which is on sale for $14.99) if you like hades but want to play a game like that with a friend (and don’t mind that it isn’t as hard as hades and probably doesn’t have as much variety). I’ve been having a good time with it!
Even though they are great as-is, and available on NSO, I’d actually kind of like to see remakes of Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World. Or maybe just remasters with widescreen mode. Maybe add some fun achievement-style challenges or a bit of new content.
Game key cards have their place: People who want to play and resell. Libraries being able to lend copies of games. For both of these, game key cards are better if the alternative is a digital only release (of course a real physical release would work as well for both use cases and would not require downloads).
My preference is changing toward digital, but I bought almost all physical for first party games on Switch 1.
I think I’m at the end of Donkey Kong Bananza. I did slow down as I got closer to the end and did a bit of backtracking and started playing another game, but now I am ready to finish off the main story. I will of course revisit it occasionally to collect some more bananas and dip into whatever additional post game content there is.
I also started Nier Automata on Switch 1 and am enjoying it so far, it is pretty unique and I am enjoying that. I do wish it was stable on Switch 2 (I haven’t tried myself but am trusting the warning on the eShop page). I don’t have any other platforms to play it on so I am happy enough with this version, even if I do wonder a bit what it would be like to play it on another platform.
A random thing I meant to mention: I got the Savage Raven Dockable Switch 2 grip (the Neo Grip) and I really like it. I got the bundle with their Max Carry case which is large but nice. I use MobaPad M6 HD for handheld mode on Switch 1, but decided to get a grip for Switch 2 for now. I am really happy with the grip. I also sort of on impulse bought the Savage Raven thumb stick grips. I got the ones that match the accent colors to add a bit more color since I got the all black grip. The thumbstick grips improve the feel of the sticks more than I expected them to.
This. I just bought it in the recent sale and started it on Switch 1 last night due to the reports of it not working on Switch 2. It would be great if they fix it at some point.
I'm still working my way through DK Bananza and enjoying it I like how they mix some things up a little bit as you progress. I feel like based on the number of Kingdoms in Odyssey I may be getting close to the end, but who knows. I also may want to backtrack and do a bit more collecting (at least finding and doing all the challenge levels — I've been doing them as I come across them if I find them).
I also played more TMNT: Splintered Fate with a friend the last two days. Still really enjoying that game. It definitely has some bugs, but they don't really affect the gameplay. And there are some tweaks I wish they'd make. I wish that in multiplayer it did a better job of tell you when you get hit (in single player there is a red overlay on the screen). I also wish it did a better job of communicating when your special and tool charged with controller vibration or some graphical effect close to your character. The corner of the screen where it tells you is too far away to really look at at least when playing in TV mode. So I just have to do it based on feel and timing.
I've played a little Dead Cells in between other things lately. I bought it a few years ago and never got into it, but I am liking it now. It is definitely difficult and I've only gotten to the first boss once in the few hours I've played recently. I need to be better about remembering that refilling health is manual and takes a little time.
I didn’t want the game until after the direct when they explained it in full, but the smashing itself is actually way more fun than I expected! It is such a good game all around! I think my favorite thing so far is to find the more hidden banana in the challenge stages where 2 are obvious and 1 is hidden.
@Moose_4 that sounds like a great collection! I didn’t hold on to my systems and games from years ago. I think It would be cool if I had. It would be neat to play on literally the same SNES or N64 I had as a kid.
I had lots of digital 3rd party games for switch 1. The convenience factor really won me over to digital for switch 2 for first party. I am much more likely to pop into a game for a short time to do some post game stuff or replay a bit if it is digital. Virtual game cards let me share my digital games with my kids now as well (if they end up with a Switch 2 at some point — they have Switch Lite now so sharing switch 1 digital games has been nice).
Does anyone know if there is a zip around case that fits the Switch 2 with this and the large handles installed? It seems like they have a bundle with a case but it it is unclear to me if it fits the grip with the larger handles installed.
I am considering one of these, but I am also considering waiting for something like the Mobapad M6 HD for Switch 1. On switch 2 I had two Hori Split Pad Pros (first one got worn down from use), and then shortly into using the second one I found out about the Mobapad M6 HD and bought that with the case for the rumble and gyro. Trying to avoid buying as many ergonomic hand held solutions for switch 2. I also play less in handheld mode than I used to though.
I've also considered trying to 3d print a switch 2 grip for now from a design people have shared online. I have a 3d printed one I've used for the 3DS XL and 2DS XL that worked okay. I also considered trying to design my own 3d printed "adapter" for mounting the Mobapad M6 HD to the switch 2, but it would be complicated a lot by the magnetic attachment (and of course I'd need to charge them separately even if I solved the magnetic attachment problem by embedding some metal into it).
I’ve still been playing TMNT: Splintered Fate. I tried a few solo runs this week. Still enjoying it. That has also got me to revisit Dead Cells which I bought a few years ago but never got in to (I think I was coming off of playing a bunch of Hades). Getting into it a bit more now though!
Also been playing Mario vs DK and Mario Kart World in between other things. It seems to me that MKW single player got rebalanced with one of the updates. It feels to me like rubber banding was decreased a little and now it feels more like playing previous Mario Kart games where I can actually be in 1st for a bit (I’ve only played 150cc single player knockout tour lately)
Looking forward to DK Bananza this week (still need to finalize my decision on if I am going digital for switch 2 like I was planning).
This story is interesting from a technical perspective. I always assumed modern Nintendo cartridges would contain technology similar to a Hardware Security Module (or Trusted Platfom Module on a computer) which is essentially a chip that contains a unique private key where that key cannot be read, but only overwritten or asked to do asymmetric cryptographic operations such as performing a signature of some data. This can be used for challenge response authentication which would strongly prove possession of the game card. This is similar to how passkeys work for web authentication (although for passkeys the private key is less strongly protected in most cases where no special hardware is being used — although hardware options exist)
Perhaps this technology is just too expensive to integrate into the chip they put in game cards since they are mass produced and instead they use some kind of static identifier.
I wonder if since game key cards do not contain significant memory if they contain a stronger authentication mechanism such as what I described above.
I’ve been playing quite a bit of TMNT: Splintered Fate with my son. We are really enjoying it. Had our first successful run last weekend. I was unsure of this game being so similar to Hades, but I really like it, especially the co-op aspect. It is on sale right now too and I’d recommend it.
Like some others have said, I am planning to switch my preference from physical to digital for Switch 2. I am going to get by for a while with internal storage by removing games with no Switch 2 enhancements and playing those on my OLED. I’ll be curious to see the price of these and other 512GB cards in the US (right now I think only 256 is readily available).
I thought a lot about the digital vs physical decision (way more than is reasonable). I came to the conclusion that the reason I bought physical for Switch 1 was mostly for price (buying used) and being able to let my kids play my games in their consoles. If I am buying a game day 1 the price one doesn’t apply, and virtual game cards solve the other issue nicely (if the kids even end up with their own Switch 2s at some point). I like being able to quickly swap between games as well. I also decided that the long term benefits of one vs the other are hard to predict and decided to not worry about it. I may still end up with some physical here and there for switch 2 if I buy used but I am planning on going digital for day one purchases. Not that this will happen, but if Nintendo had a program for trading in physical Switch 1 games for digital, I might even do it (especially for games with large Switch 2 edition downloads anyway).
I am considering going more digital for Switch 2, but can’t make up my mind. I bought almost all physical for 1st party stuff for Switch 1. Since I think all cartridges these days (including Switch 1 of course) are just flash memory I am a bit unsure of their longevity. At least I can back up the encrypted data on a MicroSD Express card and can transfer it to another card as long as my console lives. There may even be offline console to console transfers but I am less sure of that.
I am not too interested in game key cards, but they make sense for folks that want to play and resell (or buy a digital game used).
Been bouncing between games: Mario Kart World, Fast Fusion, F-Zero X, F-Zero GX. I feel like the analog stick controls in GX are super sensitive. I’m using an original pro controller though. I tried the in-game calibration and I’m not sure it helped much.
I also am not a big FPS fan, but I started playing Goldeneye on NSO in widescreen with the N64 controller setup with move on the d-pad and look on the stick. I played this game a bunch back in the day so I have some nostalgia for it. Not sure if I’ll continue playing it all the way through, but it was fun to pop in to for a bit.
I did finally take another 3 tries at the final boss in Metroid Prime Remastered to finish that one off.
Now that I am planning to get DK Bonanza, I’m trying to decide what in the backlog I should get in to before that comes out.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (11th October)
I’m still playing Silksong because boss fights and gauntlets take me so many tries. I think I am improving somewhat though. After I finish a fight I am always excited to keep going.
I’ve also been dabbling in learning fighting games via Street Fighter 6.
Re: Review: Absolum (Switch) - Evolves Arcade, RPG & Roguelike Formats Into Something Fresh & Exciting
I’m definitely interested in this one. I may pick it up in the next few days if I get a chance to play it with a friend. Otherwise, it will be on my list of games to eventually pick up.
Re: Random: The Super Mario Galaxy Games Are Full Of Secrets, And This One Is "Horribly Inefficient"
Re: Poll: How Many New Games Do You Buy In A Year?
I said about once a month, but a lot of them are indie games and are digital. I am curious with how popular games like Fortnite and Roblox are with kids if they will continue to play those kinds of games as they get older. I wonder if the kinds of games middle aged gamers like me like will decrease in popularity over time.
Re: 'Scurge: Hive' Spreads Its Isometric, Metroid-y Retro Virus To Switch This Week
I never heard of it but I am curious. I won’t be picking it up right away but I added it to my list to possibly check out at some point.
“Brutal boss fights” is likely not what I would be looking for in an isometric game, but maybe it would be okay.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th October)
Re: TMNT: Splintered Fate Lands Huge Free Content Update And New Paid DLC Next Week
Re: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate Teases New Playable Character
I’ve really enjoyed playing this game in co-op mode. I am not too excited about just a new character but hopefully it adds a new area too.
Re: Review: HautePad X Arcade Controller For Switch & Switch 2 - A Modular Masterclass At A Premium Price
Re: Team Cherry Explains Hollow Knight: Silksong's "Steep Difficulty"
I think I am objectively worse at Silksong than many people. I’ve definitely spent 1-2 hours on individual bosses and gauntlets and I am still in Act 1 something like 25 or 26 hours in. It is always exciting when I finally get past the challenge though and I think I am getting better. I only played the original HK once all the way through and that save file had 55 hours on it.
I’m hoping to be able to get better generally so I don’t have to grind specific encounters as many times. So far my notes of things to remember when playing are:
I also have heard people talk about tools. I am probably underutilizing those.
Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 For Switch?
I have both Wii versions. I also have 3D All Stars (physical). I still kind of want these, but I think I’ll hold off in hopes of a bit of a sale. I’d want digital now though so sale may be unlikely. If I end up deciding that I am going to spend the time to really play through them again, I will probably buy these versions though. $70 seems like the new default price Nintendo is going with so it doesn’t really surprise me. They are two great games.
Re: Mario Movie Domain Names Surface Online Ahead Of Mario's 40th Anniversary
My guess is that they do a galaxy 1+2 remaster at some point soon. Maybe they even announce it today.
Re: Talking Point: Is Hollow Knight: Silksong Too Difficult?
I am a bit stuck at a point where I think I need to do one of two gauntlets to proceed. I’ll get through them, but I don’t enjoy the gauntlets as much as the boss fights because multiple enemies makes it feel less like a pattern to recognize. (Of course each individual enemy has their patterns, but the way they combine together isn’t always predictable enough for me to have a clear strategy).
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (6th September)
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong: Walkthrough & All Collectibles
Not reading this because I want to discover on my own, but it is impressive you all put a guide together so quickly without early access to the game!
Re: Reminder: Here's When Hollow Knight: Silksong Releases In Your Time Zone
I took tomorrow off work to play. I’ll definitely be playing in the evening today and maybe get a little time in at lunch.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (23rd August)
Re: Donkey Kong Bananza's Dig Button Placement Is All Thanks To Miyamoto
It makes sense, but I knew the option was there so I changed it immediately. For other games that are different enough (BOTW/TOTK), I haven’t changed it (I didn’t realize the option existed in the Zelda games honestly, I guess I never looked for it).
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong "Special Announcement" Is Coming This Thursday
@Divide_and_Wander That is an interesting theory.
I really enjoyed Hollow Knight when I played through it years ago. I’m excited to play the sequel when it comes out. If it shadow drops I will probably end up starting it in spite of the fact that I have quite a few games in progress right now.
Re: PSA: Shoot Some Hoops With Drag x Drive's Dev Team This Weekend
I played around with it tonight and let the kids try it out. Liked how the HD Rumble gave the movement a tactile feel. I thought it was pretty neat overall. I think it is very reasonably priced, but I don’t plan to get it because I don’t think it is something I would play a lot. It seems like the kind of game that will be difficult to play casually online because the people that get into it will get very into it and become very skilled (which is great for them). Unless maybe Nintendo implements some kind of match making that tries to match skill levels.
Re: 59 Switch Games You Should Pick Up In The 'Play Together' eShop Sale (North America)
I really recommend TMNT: Splintered Fate (which is on sale for $14.99) if you like hades but want to play a game like that with a friend (and don’t mind that it isn’t as hard as hades and probably doesn’t have as much variety). I’ve been having a good time with it!
Re: Feature: What We Expect From Nintendo For Super Mario Bros.' 40th Anniversary
My guess is Galaxy 1 + 2 re-release.
Even though they are great as-is, and available on NSO, I’d actually kind of like to see remakes of Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World. Or maybe just remasters with widescreen mode. Maybe add some fun achievement-style challenges or a bit of new content.
Re: Nintendo Sends Out Second Game-Key Card & Physical Game Survey
Game key cards have their place: People who want to play and resell. Libraries being able to lend copies of games. For both of these, game key cards are better if the alternative is a digital only release (of course a real physical release would work as well for both use cases and would not require downloads).
My preference is changing toward digital, but I bought almost all physical for first party games on Switch 1.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (2nd August)
Re: Nintendo Switch 2 System Update 20.3.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
> Please tell me they fixed NieR…
@SplatRay001
This. I just bought it in the recent sale and started it on Switch 1 last night due to the reports of it not working on Switch 2. It would be great if they fix it at some point.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (26th July)
Re: Random: Shigeru Miyamoto Did Exactly What We Did When Playtesting Donkey Kong Bananza
I didn’t want the game until after the direct when they explained it in full, but the smashing itself is actually way more fun than I expected! It is such a good game all around! I think my favorite thing so far is to find the more hidden banana in the challenge stages where 2 are obvious and 1 is hidden.
Re: ICYMI: Here's A Look Inside Donkey Kong Bananza's Switch 2 Game Case
Re: ICYMI: Here's A Look Inside Donkey Kong Bananza's Switch 2 Game Case
I did almost all physical for Switch 1, but got Mario Kart World and this digitally for Switch 2.
Re: Review: Savage Raven By Skull & Co. NeoGrip For Nintendo Switch 2 - Does The Job Very Nicely
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (12th July)
Re: PSA: You Might Want To Be Careful Buying Pre-Owned Switch 1 Games For Your Switch 2
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (5th July)
Re: Struggling For Switch 2 Storage? TeamGroup Launches A Range Of Micro SD Express Cards For The Console
Re: Forget Switch 2 Game Key-Cards - "Full On-The-Cart Physical Releases" Are What People Want, Says Publisher Lost In Cult
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (21st June)
