Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (23rd March)

jon128

Over 125 hours into Persona 5 Royal and I have a route to the treasure in the final Royal exclusive palace). So probably not too much more to go. I assume there will be a long multi-round (and probably multi-boss) battle to end it. Hopefully will finish it this week.

Also in non-digital games I’ll be playing some KeyForge today. Only in recent years have I started playing collectible card games at all (starting with a bit of casual Magic The Gathering), but I have found KeyForge to be a better fit for me.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 9th)

jon128

Still playing Persona 5 Royal. Doing the 8th palace now, but I did the things to unlock the extra content so still a ways to go. I am ready to be done with it but at something like 108 hours into it I may as well see it through to the end. I’ve enjoyed it but probably would have enjoyed it more if it was like half as long and just more dense.

Re: New Metroidvania From CERN Physicist Focuses On The Wonder Of Science

jon128

Sounds interesting. I was thinking recently that it would be neat if it were possible to have a game equivalent of an Andy Weir novel like The Martian or Project Hail Mary. The first time I read Project Hail Mary I felt like the beginning felt a bit like a video game. This seems different from that, but still interesting.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 24th)

jon128

Persona 5 Royal about 94 hours in and at the beginning of the 7th palace. Stayed up too late one night watching all the interesting story progression after the 6th palace. I read that the game forces you to get to the bottom of mementos soon for the story so I am spending an in game day getting as deep as I can there since I had been neglecting it a bit. I don’t really care about getting and completing all the requests (I did some where I was interested or cared for advancing confidants).

I am kind of ready to play something else (been playing it exclusively since late November), but I am planning to try to finish this game first. I keep thinking about pausing it and playing something else, but I think if I do I won’t go back to it.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 3rd)

jon128

@JohnnyMind
Thanks! Yeah I plan to stick with it. For me the best part of the story so far was around the 4th palace. I think the summer just felt a little slow after that.

For the 5th boss, even after looking it up, getting a higher level persona, getting the right items, and turning the difficulty to easy, I barely finished in the time limit. I think now could probably do it on normal difficulty, because I think I now know the right details of exactly how Baton Pass works that is necessary for it. I think I get what they were going for, but I didn’t feel like the game lead me to the answer.

It is a pretty good example of the issues I have with RPGs sometimes where I find it hard to know if something is hard because it is a puzzle and I am missing something or if I am at the wrong level or if I need to use consumable items. I guess figuring out the answer between those could be viewed as a puzzle, but I guess I prefer to know if it is even possible to “just figure it out” or of leveling up or more items are the only option.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 3rd)

jon128

Still playing Persona 5 Royal. I am 77 hours in and just finished the 5th palace and got to the story bit that happens on the deadline date. It has felt like a bit of a slog lately (summer break was slow, 5th boss battle was annoying) , but I am going to try to keep going because I think the story is about to take some interesting turns.

Re: 94 Switch Games You Should Pick Up in Nintendo's 'Jump-Start' January Sale (US)

jon128

I think I will resist adding to my backlog. Persona 5 Royal has been taking all my video game time since late November and I am probably only halfway done at 70 hours (at 5th Palace).

After that I want to get to: Tunic and Super Mario RPG. Also I only did 3 of the main temples in TotK over the 45 hours I spent with that last year and I never did finished collecting all the things to get to the final boss in Metroid Prime Remastered.

I am interested in Outer Wilds and maybe Sea Of Stars though.

Re: Poll: How Often Do You Trade-In Your Switch Games?

jon128

I sort of regret selling my SNES, N64, GameCube, Gameboy Color, and DS all at various points in the past so my plan now is to never sell anything. I guess I say I “sort of regret” because I think I can pretty much play everything I care about on 3DS or Switch anyway.

I still prefer physical copies of games if they are first party titles, if is cheaper on sale or used (almost always except for day 1 buys).

If I don’t buy a physical game day 1 or on sale for 30%+ off I look for it on eBay for about the same discount.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 13th)

jon128

I’ll be playing Persona 5 Royal. I’ve been playing it for over 6 weeks and I am 56 hours in and finished the 4th palace. Even though this game is so long I am going to try to play it exclusively until the end. Last year I did a lot of starting and not finishing games, but it seems like for a story driven game like this I really need to play it straight through.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 6th)

jon128

Still playing Persona 5 Royal. About 50 hours in now and starting the 4th palace. The story in this game is very well constructed with all the flash back/forward and foreshadowing. I haven’t play a lot of story driven games, but am enjoying this one. Also the combat is usually fun and interesting (my biggest problem with RPGs in the past was not enjoying the combat).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 9th)

jon128

Enjoying Persona 5 Royal so far. I am hoping it will hold my attention in spite of its length. I’ve never played anything this long before. I am a bit curious what pace I am on. I know it is supposed to be about 100 hours, but I’d like to not go slow and end up half way done at 100 hours or something. Save file says I am over 15 hours in. Mementos just unlocked and am waiting for the second target.

It is like nothing I’ve played before so I think as long as it stays fresh and interesting I’ll stick with it for a while anyway. It is just hard to know if I can really play a game for 100+ hours when the most I’ve played a game is probably 45-60 hours.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 2nd)

jon128

I finished Paper Mario (N64) on NSO this week. I’ll definitely pick up the Super Mario RPG remake at some point (ideally on sale or used for >30% off. I try to only pay full price for games I buy day 1)

I was wanting to try another RPG with a more serious story and looked into a bunch of them.

While it has some darker themes (and is much much longer) than what I typically play, I was interested in Persona 5 Royal and physical copies were on sale for $25 USD so I picked that up to try. I am intrigued by it so far though and am curious to see where it goes after the first tutorial palace.

Re: Nintendo Updates Switch Online's N64 Release Schedule

jon128

@JohnnyMind Thanks! I’m interested in at least giving this one a try again to see how it is. Unrelated to this article, but after some comments you and I exchanged in a Mario RPG article a while back about me wanting to like RPGs, I’ve been playing Paper Mario on NSO and have been enjoying it! Going to try out some other non-Mario RPGs as well to see if I can get into them (although I will likely fall off of them due to length).

Re: Nintendo Updates Switch Online's N64 Release Schedule

jon128

Is it confirmed that we are really getting Jet Force Gemini outside of Japan? The articles seem to only mention Japan.

I would be interested to revisit this game. I played a bit on N64. I am not sure if it would have aged well or not. I was excited for Banjo-Kazooie which I played a bit of on N64, but (maybe unpopular opinion) I did not feel it aged well. I probably played about the same portion of it that I played as a kid.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Super Mario RPG On Switch?

jon128

I have been playing Paper Mario (N64) on NSO and enjoying it, so I now think I will get this. I am tempted to buy it day 1 but that would probably mean I would interrupt Paper Mario and not necessarily return to it. Not to mention the other unfinished games I have started this year.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 11th)

jon128

Playing Paper Mario on NSO. I want to see if I enjoy these games because of the Super Mario RPG and Thousand Year Door remakes. I generally have a hard time getting through RPGs even though I want to enjoy them. After some discussion of this in the comments on here on other articles I am enjoying Paper Mario. I’ll have to see if I keep enjoying it through to the end and then still want to play more similar games. I remember renting Super Mario RPG as a kid and not really understanding what an RPG was at the time.

I also have the Final-Final Test still to do in Wonder. I have 99 lives ready for a try at it when I am ready.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 4th)

jon128

@Yalloo maybe I’ll try it some more. Right now I am stuck on the spring feet part because I just feel like I have no control with that badge. I was even using Yoshi, even though I played the whole game with Mario and no badges. I think I’d probably prefer invisibility. If there was a checkpoint right before the spring feet bit it may not be as bad. I need to figure out if there is a trick to feeling in control with that spring feet badge. Also, Yoshi may be a mistake because maybe if I knew I couldn’t mess it up I’d do better.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 4th)

jon128

I think I’ve finished what I am going to do in Wonder. I’ve done everything but the Final-Final Test. I would love to do that too and like some of the sections I’ve played, but a combination of the check pointing and the always bounce and invisibility sections that just feel unfair to me, I am not sure I will.

After some discussions in the comments on here for Super Mario RPG, I think I am going to give Paper Mario on NSO a real try. Enjoying the first bit so far. (I don’t have the best history of enjoying RPGs, but I want to enjoy them).

Maybe some more Fire Emblem Awakening which I have been playing off and on for many months.

Re: Hands On: Super Mario RPG Is The Most Faithful Remake We've Ever Played

jon128

@JohnnyMind

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it. I think there is some potential for me to enjoy RPGs with the right mindset of focusing on the story, world and characters. I did enjoy Chrono Trigger (DS version) when I played it 4-5 years ago. I didn’t finish it though, I think I got to the final boss and thought I was going to need to grind a bunch to beat it and stopped.

I have enjoyed a couple of tactical RPGs as well and in the case of Triangle Strategy I enjoyed the story and not just the combat.

For Mario RPGs specifically I think I need to pick the one I want to try because I think there is a good chance that even if I like the first one I play I won’t necessarily want to play another one for quite a while. Recently I’ve played a little of Paper Mario on NSO and could maybe see myself getting into it.

I guess another thing that is hard for me with many RPGs is that they are long and I tend to prefer shorter games in general.

Re: Hands On: Super Mario RPG Is The Most Faithful Remake We've Ever Played

jon128

I want to be excited for this and TTYD remake, but me and RPGs…. It usually just doesn’t work because I get bored. It is a genre I really wish I could enjoy.

I think I want the combat in RPGs to be strategic and from my experience it seems to not be (or I am doing it wrong). Also maybe it is just supposed to be mostly about enjoying and being curious about the story/world/characters. Maybe that is the mindset I should try.

Curious if anyone else used to feel this way and now enjoys them.

Re: Soapbox: No, Mario Wonder's Most-Annoying Character Isn't The Talking Flower

jon128

The part where it was after every level got annoying. Aside from that it was easy to just ignore them. The little bits of narration after getting the royal seeds reminded me of SMW after completing a castle. I can’t say I actually read it much but I appreciated that the style of the narration and maybe the background music reminded me of SMW.

Talking flowers ended up being fun.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 28th)

jon128

@Morsel I spent so much time and lives on climb to the beat! Probably well over 100 attempts. There were at least two times I sat down and played nothing but that level for 45 minutes to an hour. I did finally get past it. And then I was able to do it again within 1-2 tries after that. I am going to have to go back for the purple coins if I am going to 100% though.

I generally don’t 100% games but with Wonder I am considering it. I think right now I have 100% in W1-W3 and petal islands. I have been going back to find things I missed.

I did 100% DKC:TF a few years back when I played that. (according to its measure — I think there was some collectible it didn’t track that I didn’t care about)

Re: Round Table: Let's Talk Mario Wonder - Surprises, Badges, Difficulty, New Characters

jon128

I finished the main game. Definitely very good. Planning to go back and collect some things I missed (tried to get all of the wonder flowers and most of the flower coins, but I definitely missed some). I also want to see if I can find the secret exits that I missed. I am exited that there are “proper” secret exits and not just collectibles that lead to bonus levels. I didn’t realize there were secret exits until I levels on the map in W8 to at looked inaccessible and then I found a secret exit in the level nearby.

Although when I was looking up what the indication of an alternate exit was (lack of check mark background) I also ran across that NSMBU had secret exits too and I guess I just didn’t do them when I played that.

I am curious if I’d like NSMBU better if I replayed it. I thought it was okay the first time but I wanted it to be more like SMW than it was. I really liked Wonder and felt it was much closer to SMW.

Re: Round Table: Let's Talk Mario Wonder - Surprises, Badges, Difficulty, New Characters

jon128

On W6, I read some of this and will probably read more once I am done to avoid spoilers. So far I just want to say that I love Jump Jump Jump and the harder version. I keep trying the harder version and still have not quite made it. I think I am getting very close to the end but that level tolerates zero mistakes. I have spent a lot of time dying in that level. Reminds me of something out of Celeste or maybe Bopopolis from DKC:TF.

The following is a bit of a spoiler, but I’ll try to be a bit vague:

I was really excited about the way the map leads to the harder Jump Jump Jump. It reminded me of SMW, although it ended up not being quite as similar to SMW as I thought it would be.

Re: Poll: What's Your Switch Controller Of Choice For Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

jon128

@Kidfunkadelic83 Yes! I have played Mario games like this ever since my dad told me as a kid how to hold the controller when playing Super Mario World. And now I had a similar experience with my kids and needing to explain to hold Y and hit B to jump further.

I definitely have nostalgia for the Y + B and would probably mostly play that way, but sometimes doing that motion a lot for precisely timed things will get uncomfortable for me.

I also have just thought about how I probably rarely let go of Y in most levels. Probably only when on a smaller platform and trying to get close to one edge to set it up to dash as much as possible before jumping.

Re: Poll: What's Your Switch Controller Of Choice For Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

jon128

Mostly my split pad pro, but when I do play docked I’ve used the pro controller. I did try the SNES pad because I was hoping for some Easter Egg like the sounds in the SNES app when having the official SNES pad connected, but didn’t notice anything.

I’ve tried a few control options for one special level that I am having a bit of a hard time with due to the rather precise timing involved. For that one I have tried mapping the button on the back of the split pad pro to Y because I always hold Y anyway and then I can just focus on B.

This also made me think that the game should have an “always dash” setting for increased comfort.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Showed 'Switch 2' Demos To Developers At Gamescom

jon128

My only excitement for a switch 2 comes from the fact that it probably means a new 3D Mario and maybe some dormant series being revived as a launch title.. But my excitement is tempered by the fact that playing this new 3D Mario title will require me to buy a $400 console on top of the probably $70 for the game.

Would I prefer Nintendo would just make a new 3D Mario game within the limitations of the switch? Yes.

Will than happen? No.

I am very excited to be getting Super Mario Bros Wonder on Switch though!

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Showcases Trio Of Brand New Power-Ups

jon128

@JohnnyMind Good point about the types of badges they’ve shown. I guess I am hoping the special ability ones interact with the level design in interesting ways so they don’t all end up being different variations of “easier”. For example I think it would be cool if certain wonder seeds were only accessible with the right badge. Things that are optional like that but fun to do. I guess I just want anything that encourages me to re-explore levels with the special ability badges and makes that experience interesting.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Showcases Trio Of Brand New Power-Ups

jon128

Badges seem cool. I hope they are not just ways to make it easier though, I’d like to see certain levels or interesting/useful collectibles that require them so you have to “come back with a badge” to do something. Also badges that make it different/harder and not necessarily easier would be good. It looks like maybe there is some of that. Invisibility badge seems like it would make it harder but in an annoying way.

Re: Talking Point: The Games We Got Rid Of - What Were We Thinking?

jon128

All the Nintendo games and systems I sold (SNES, N64, GBC, GCN, DS). Although, now that I can pretty much play everything I would want to play on Switch, I don’t regret it that much anymore.

Now I will never sell a Nintendo game or system again.

Never really regretted getting rid of the Dreamcast or Xbox 360 though.

Re: Talking Point: After Three Months, What's Your Zelda: TOTK Completion Percentage?

jon128

I’ve been much better at starting games than finishing them lately. I’ve played 45h of it and am at the end of the 3rd main quest dungeon that I have played. I should get back to this game. I’ll finish the main story at some point. I am not sure how much I will do beyond that. Probably not much, I am not a completionist at all. I do tend to feel bad about not finishing the main story of games though when I don’t do that, so I usually try to do that eventually for the majority of games.

Re: Talking Point: Is Super Mario Bros. Wonder Really A Departure From The 'New' Series?

jon128

The animation looks good and seems to have a lot of personality.

I’d like to see the wonder seeds unlock levels off of the main path and a substantial amount of them or some other variations on levels or something and aren’t just a bland collectible.

I would love if they did away with “lives”, but it looks like they are still there. Hopefully it at least saves after each level and not only at castles like NSMBU.

Maybe it is just me, but I am over flag poles as the exit. Why not use the SMW style or the SMB3 style or a new style? This won’t change and isn’t a bit deal though.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder, A Brand New 2D Mario Game, Is Coming To Switch

jon128

@DaniPooo A game that matches the old box art style would be awesome!

I am not sure about this one yet. I like that it looks different than the NSMB games. The thing I really want is SMW secret exits and branching paths (like a lot of secret exits and levels not just 1-2 per world that need me to collect all the star coins in the world or whatever to get). I’d also like the SMW aspect of it being fun to take powerups between levels. I am curious if this game will try any of that.

Re: Nintendo Direct Showcase Confirmed For Tomorrow, 21st June

jon128

I’d be interested to see what a new 2D Mario would be, especially if it is not in the “new” series or the “maker” because those have always been a bit underwhelming to me. I probably just have too high of a standard for 2D mario though. I’d want it to capture the magic of playing Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros 3 as a kid.

The things I really want a game to capture from SMW are: tons of secret exits and branching paths, ability to use items from one level in another (like powerups and different yoshis).

I’d be interested to see an indie dev do something that combines SMW secret exits and branching paths with some light metroidvania elements (gaining abilities and reusing them in earlier levels to find the secret exits). Not sure if it would work though.

I’d also probably be excited to buy a physical copy of something simple like a widescreen remake of SMW and SMB3 with maybe some added content.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 29th)

jon128

Metroid Prime Remastered, getting towards the end. I had this game for the GameCube back in the day and didn’t get that far into it. I have enjoyed playing it again and it is a great 3D translation of Metroid, but I still don’t like it nearly as much as Metroid Dread though. Probably because I am not fond of FPS, so those elements are less enjoyable.

Also, maybe some Fire Emblem Awakening which I have also been playing for the first time.
