Re: Guide: How To Spot Bootleg Nintendo Video Games

jon128

I’ve found the r/gameverifying subreddit helpful as well.

I only have three DS games and one GBA game, but I bought them all off of eBay and think they are real. I haven’t opened the GBA one though to look at the PCB.

As a professional software engineer I like to respect intellectual property rights so I always try to buy legitimate copies. It just feels like the right thing to do.

I can see how some folks feel it doesn’t matter buying reproduction cartridges since on the secondary market the money is not going directly to the producers of the content anyway. However, I feel like the price of a game on the secondary market could influence rights holders when they are deciding on re-releasing or remaking games. Games having a good value on the secondary market may also help rights holders sell newer (physical) games for more money for longer if buyers feel confident in being able to resell them for a good price if they want to.

I buy digital and physical games, but I do feel good about the ability to resell physical games (even if I never intend to), it just feels like a good balance of rights. So I generally prefer physical copies especially for first party games.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (some of each mode). Enjoying it so far. I really liked 3D Land and 3D World is great so far. I think the video feature on 3D Land on here from last week hit the nail on the head when they said that it is the variety that makes these games great.

May play a bit of A Link to the Past if I want something else. I am on the final dungeon now. (Started it a couple years ago and returned to it for the last couple dungeons after finishing A Link Between Worlds last weekend).

Re: Nintendo Registers New Trademark For The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

I didn’t play it back when I had my first DS but I just bought a copy off eBay recently to try out at some point. I was going to buy spirit tracks too but I can’t justify $40 for it unless I play through Phantom Hourglass. I also haven’t played BOTW yet and it was on sale for $40 so I picked that up to add to the backlog.

I’d love to see windwaker HD and twilight princess HD come to switch.

I rented A Link to the Past as a kid and didn’t get very far. I also owned Ocarina of Time and Link’s Awakening DX as a kid and also didn’t get very far.

I have enjoyed rediscovering Zelda games as an adult though starting with Ocarina of Time 3D, A Link to the Past and Majora’s Mask 3D on the 3DS. I recently played through A Link Between Worlds which was the first one I didn’t look at a guide at all for. The others I’ve played always ran into things here and there that I had to look up.

I’m assuming I’ll be finishing A Link Between Worlds this weekend. One more sage to save then I’m assuming it is just a final dungeon and Boss. I’ve been enjoying it a lot. It looks really good in 3D. I haven’t had to resort to a guide or hints at all (I am not sure if this is because I am building up enough series knowledge now —having played OOT, MM and most of LttP — or if it is just because it is a newer/easier game).

Then maybe I will figure out what I didn’t finish in A Link To The Past when I played it a few years back and see if I feel like doing that.

I’d also like to play Link’s Awakening DX on 3DS, but if I start it after ALBW I doubt that I’ll have time to complete it before Mario 3D World comes out on Friday.

I went on a bit of a buying spree lately (All 3 GBC Zelda’s on 3DS VC, Phantom Hourglass, and Breath of the Wild). So I see a lot of Zelda in my future, but I will probably need to break it up so I don’t get burned out.

Re: Video: Super Mario 3D Land Deserves to Be Remembered

Great game! I first played it 2.5 years ago a bit after I got back into gaming with a New 2DS XL. A few months back I decided I had to experience it in Stereoscopic 3D so I bought a new New 3DS XL someone was selling. It was worth it. The 3D really adds to the experience. Currently enjoying the 3D in A Link Between Worlds as well.

Looking forward to 3D World + Bowser’s Fury next week. I’ve never played it. With the multiplayer maybe my kids will want to play it with me. They are currently really in to Mario Odyssey.

Finally finished Majora’s Mask 3D last weekend after starting it in 2018, taking a break for a couple of years and then getting back to it in August and then getting back to it again recently.

Started of A Link Between Worlds this week and I am really enjoying it. I played A Link To The Past a couple times as a kid but didn’t really “get” it. I played all but the last dungeon in LttP in 2018 also. I should get back to that at some point. I am trying to keep my own notes this time with ALBW to avoid feeling like I need to look at a guide if so end up taking a long break from it. I generally like to just use a guide if I get stuck on some puzzle that is too obscure, but sometimes I get sucked into following the guide more than I want to when I see all the things I could have collected by whatever point I am at in the game. Nothing wrong with following guides, but it does take away from my enjoyment a bit if I follow too closely.

I am feeling tempted to buy up the GBC zelda games on 3DS VC and authentic copies of the DS ones on eBay

Maybe some more Horace if I feel like a break from ALBW.

@Crockin I just got to chapter 9 about 7 hours in. It has been kind of up and down for me. Early on I was intrigued by where it was going to go with the story aspects. The platforming early on was definitely not great. I found some of the platforming in chapter 6 especially annoying. There are some things that reach out and kill you if you pass by too close which is annoying. In chapter 7 or 8 the platforming started to feel a lot better. I found the boss in chapter 8 quite annoying though. Platformers are probably my favorite genre. Celeste and DKC Tropical Freeze would be 10/10 for me (and Hollow Knight is another 10/10 for a metroidvania style).

Horace doesn’t compare to any of those as far as the platforming, but I don’t think that is what it is trying to be. I’ve enjoyed playing it but I am not yet sure if I will finish it. If Feb 12 and Mario 3D World comes before I am done chances are I won’t get back into it.

Update: 1 day later and I am starting chapter 12. I seem to keep picking it back up anyway.

Re: Microsoft Has A "Very Good Relationship With Nintendo" But Isn't Making Any Promises Moving Forward

It’d be great to see N64 Rare games on switch. I have been tempted to buy a current XBox One just for Rare Replay, but haven’t been able to justify it. Maybe if I can pick up one used really cheap after the new one comes out.

It seems like it would be a good move for both companies to get the N64 Rare games on Switch. I bet they could charge a good price for them. I know I’d pay $60 for just the N64 Rare games.

It seems like they wouldn’t have to put a lot of resources into getting the games on the switch either since they already have an N64 emulator. I remember reading that Rare games had their own GPU microcode or something since the stock GPU microcode had some issues. I read it in an article that was comparing PSX to N64, but Wikipedia also has a section about it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64_programming_characteristics#Microcode. If for some reason Nintendo’s emulator doesn’t already support that there may be some work there.

Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Is One Week Away - Which Game Will You Play First?

jon128

I’ll probably play sunshine first because I never played it. I have considered going chronologically as well though, but I think if I do that I will likely need a break from Mario after 64 and I do really want to try out Sunshine.

I rented 64 a couple of times as a kid in the 90s, but didn’t really “get” 3D platforming until after that. I did play the DS version a couple years ago and enjoyed it aside from the controls. Didn’t complete it because the controls got too annoying as the difficulty increased. So I am excited to try 64 with proper controls.

Re: Feature: So, What Happened To Super Mario Galaxy 2?

jon128

Someone else and I mentioned this in another comment thread but having played Galaxy 2 recently I feel like the pointer control aspects were more deeply integrated into the gameplay than with Galaxy 1. What I mean is that you had to manipulate the pointer and press the B trigger with Yoshi while also being able to quickly move and jump. I think that would be difficult in handheld mode on the switch. I think with Galaxy one the pointer usage was more optional and when it was not optional it was in more separate pointer centric sections.

I have not played Galaxy 1 recently though, so maybe it uses the pointer more than I remember from over 10 years ago when I first played through it the whole way.

Re: Nintendo Explains How Motion Controls Work In Super Mario Galaxy On Switch

jon128

@Toy_Link I agree with your “Yoshi’s Tongue” theory as a possible reason why Galaxy 2 was not included. I recently played through Galaxy 2 on the Wii and it definitely requires you to point and “Click” with the right trigger while still having quick access to the other controls. I think Galaxy 1 required less of this, but I’ve only played the first couple levels of it recently, my last full play through was back when it came out. But from what I remember the pointer controls were less critical to it or were in sort of separate sections where you’d have an opportunity to move your hands.

For example in one early level in Galaxy 1 there are pull stars around the lower star and you need to pull on them to get the power star, but you don’t have to worry too much about other controls in that segment. In Galaxy 2 I think there is one boss fight that relies heavily on pointing and launching projectiles with Yoshi, while also navigating around.

I am really excited this collection. I never played sunshine and really want to try it out. This way I can play it in handheld mode (which is my preferred way to game in general) and not have to pay $70+ for a used copy of it on eBay and also have to buy a GameCube controller to play it on my Wii.

I also didn’t play the original Mario 64 too much because I didn’t quite “get” 3D platforming right away when I was a kid when the N64 came out. I played The DS port a fair in the last couple years, but as the game progressed I had to give it up before completing it due to the control scheme in that version. I’ll be interested to try the original again. I think there is a chance I’ll like it better without the additional characters of the DS version actually.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Super Mario 3D All-Stars On Nintendo Switch

jon128

I am very happy with all the announcements today.

I may be alone on this but it would have been cool to see a physical Version of the classic Super Mario All Stars with Super Mario World bundled in as well. We have them in NSO, but, you know, what if I want to play them on my switch 20 years form now once NSO is gone 😀.

Galaxy 2 would have been cool as well, but I recently bought a used copy of both Galaxy games and played through Galaxy 2 on my Wii.

I’ve regretted selling the SNES and N64 and games I had for them when I was a kid, so now that I’ve gotten back into Nintendo games a couple years ago, I plan to never sell any of my stuff. I like the idea of physical copies since they can outlive the online service if I need to replace my hardware.

I am happy I never sold my Wii because I loaned it to my sister for about 10 years and got it back recently since she didn’t want it any more. 😄
