Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (25th January)

jon128

I’ll probably finish up Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door today or tomorrow. Very good game. I enjoyed the first one, but this is better.

Then I need to decide what to play next. I’m leaning toward giving Xenoblade Chronicles 3 a try. I’ve never played a game in the series. Not sure if it will be for me and I am put off a bit by the length, but I am curious about the series since it is so well regarded.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (18th January)

jon128

Still playing through Paper Mario: TTYD for the first time. I have 5 of the 7 stars now.

Also thinking about what to pull of the backlog once I finish this one. Maybe 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim or Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I’ve never played any games like either of these before. I think XC3 will take me on the order of 100 hours (probably taking most of my gaming time over 3 months or more) so I have to make sure I am ready for that if I decide to play it.

Re: Poll: So, What Did You Think Of The Switch 2 Reveal?

jon128

I just want to see what games get announced in the April direct. I mostly want a new Mario game or maybe some completely new series. Mario Kart does not get me excited, unless maybe if they really put a unique twist on it or something. I like Mario Kart, but it just seems like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has everything that is needed.

I have plenty to play on switch still. I’ll probably still try to buy a switch 2 right away so I have one when a game comes along that I want to play.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (11th January)

jon128

Working my way through Paper Mario TTYD and still enjoying how each area is a bit different.

Due to holiday sales I have also built up a big backlog of switch games that I own but have not yet played:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (will be my first game in the series)
  • Pikmin 4 (also will be my first in the series)
  • Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp (played a bit of 1 on Wii U virtual console previously)
  • Unicorn Overlord
  • 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim

So I really don’t need a Switch 2, but that probably won’t stop me from preordering one as soon as I can, especially if we get a new 3D Mario game.

This backlog likely represents as much or more time than I have to dedicate to gaming for the entire year. (Assuming I stick with each game to complete the main story).

Re: Nintendo and Lego Are Collaborating On A New Game Boy Set

jon128

@Yoshi3 Yeah that is cool. When it came out (and when I had seen it briefly in the store in the past) I had no idea it had all that movement. I did hear about the Easter Egg of 1-2 inside a compartment.

Now that I realize all of the Nintendo LEGO sets targeted at adults have this type of movement it does seem like they’ll do something similar for the gameboy and not something electronic like I previously suggested.

Re: Nintendo and Lego Are Collaborating On A New Game Boy Set

jon128

@Yoshi3 I actually did not know about the movement feature on the NES Lego set. That is pretty neat.

I guess when I thought the Mario and Yoshi one was just the pixel art I was less interested in that as well until I saw that it moved and then I wasn’t sold until I saw it in person and saw how much depth they added to it and how many parts moved. The SNES Super Mario World game is particularly nostalgic for me though.

Re: Nintendo and Lego Are Collaborating On A New Game Boy Set

jon128

This does seem a little silly if it is just a Lego model of a game boy. Maybe it will have a “brick” that is a screen and electronics to make it playable and have a few classic games built in or something (similar to those Mario and Zelda anniversary game and watch things).

I did recently go to a Lego store with my kids and as a Super Mario World fan could not resist buying the Mario and Yoshi set. First time I’ve bought a Lego set as an adult.

Re: Rumour: New 'Switch 2' Photos Show Off A Very Legit-Looking Joy-Con

jon128

I’m hoping existing joycons are at least compatible with Switch 2 over wireless. Then maybe there will be a 3rd party adapter that will let me at least physically attach my MobaPad M6 HD to the switch 2 for handheld play. (Or maybe I could 3D print something — depending on the details of how the magnetic system works and if I could find appropriate sized magnets or ferrous metal to put inside).

I’d rather not go back from the OLED screen and comfortable full featured hand held controllers. Although it does sound like we are getting and LCD.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th January)

jon128

Playing Paper Mario TTYD on Switch. This is my first ever time playing the game. I am working toward the 3rd star. I am enjoying how the areas are more different from each other (at least so far) than they were in the original Paper Mario.

Also some Splatoon 2 with the kids. This game is only $15 on eBay so it is easy to pick up multiple copies to play together for local salmon runs. People still play it online also so we sometimes join each other in the same games online as well.

Re: Feature: Open Your Drawers - An Ode To Rummaging Through Houses In RPGs

jon128

I remember playing Chrono Trigger (potential spoiler ahead for a very old game) and liking how when you get put on trial near the beginning of the game they have a witness against you that talks about you stealing their lunch (if you stole it - which of course I did because it was the beginning of the game and I was figuring out how to get health refills).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (14th December)

jon128

I finished my first ever play through of Fire Emblem Three Houses which I have been playing on and off this year. I did the Golden Deer route and did all the main battles and paralogues on hard/classic. However, after I finished off every other enemy except for the boss on the last map, I found that I just had no way to take out the boss. This was a disappointing difficulty spike that didn’t really feel fair. I could maybe go back to the beginning of the month and grind a little or maybe buy and use just the right upgrades, but I was not confident in that so what I did was to just change the difficulty to normal and redo the battle to finish it.

Not sure what I am playing next. At one point recently I started Oracle Of Ages on NSO so maybe I’ll continue that. I should really get back to Tears of the Kingdom at some point too.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (2nd November)

jon128

I rolled credits on Animal Well last night. Great Game! I know there is plenty more puzzles to solve with how this game is designed, but I am not sure I’ll bother. I tend to only play the “main story” of games because there are so many games to play.

I haven’t decided if I am getting Brothership right away. I think it is going to be longer than I will want it to be and I still haven’t played TTYD remake so that is on my list to play at some point soon as well. I really like the art style though.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (26th October)

jon128

I have been playing Animal Well which I picked up on sale earlier in the week. Great game to go into knowing very little about it. I’m enjoying exploring it. I like the fact that it focuses on puzzles and platforming and not on combat.

It also seems like it is not supposed to be too long so I may even finished before Brothership comes out if I end up giving in and buying that right away rather than waiting to pick it up a little cheaper on eBay.

Re: Every Game In The Switch eShop 'Screaming Deals' Sale (North America)

jon128

I couldn’t decide what to play after finishing Echoes of Wisdom, but I have been interested in Animal Well since it came out and ended up picking it up on sale last night and played a bit and played a bit. It seems like I will enjoy exploring it.

I think it isn’t supposed to be too long so maybe I will finish it in time for Mario and Luigi: Brothership if I give in to my temptation to buy it day one.

Re: Random: The Latest 'Switch 2' Rumour? Scroll Wheel Shoulder Buttons

jon128

I’m not a huge fan of the clicking sticks we have today. I tend to accidentally click them when I just intend to move the stick quickly. I guess so tend to grip my controller too tightly for some types of games.

If they did this it seems like it would be easy to click when intending to scroll in the same way it is with the sticks.

Re: Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom Best Buy Pre-Order Bonus Revealed

jon128

I preordered yesterday from Best Buy. I doubt I’ll get the bonus since I ordered that late, but I am not too concerned about the bonus. I similarly did not get the Super Mario Wonder print last year.

I was a bit unsure of this game being too open, but I do prefer the puzzle element of Zelda games to the combat and after realizing that they have some tools (such as limited numbers of echoes and echoes maybe having different costs) to prevent the abilities from being ridiculously overpowered I have decided to give it a shot. Link’s Awakening and A Link Between Worlds are probably my favorite Zelda games so I am hoping there is enough influence from those in this game.

I like BOTW and TOTK, but I think having all the abilities at the beginning takes away some of the feeling of progression for me. I do have to get back to TOTK and finish the main story at some point. I really enjoyed it but stopped playing after ~45 hours.

Re: Talking Point: Will The Switch Ever Get A 'Nintendo Selects' Range?

jon128

@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot

This is what I do. Unless I really want a game day 1 I wait and buy it on eBay. Generally they can be found for $40-$45 on there (in good condition with the case) not too long after release. Some that are older or sold a ton may even be cheaper. Most recently I’ve gotten Super Mario RPG for ~$43 and Paper Mario TTYD for ~$45 (after tax and shipping)

Re: Poll: Do You Prefer Fire Emblem: Three Houses Or Engage?

jon128

I’m newer to tactics games and new to the series. I got interested in the series after playing Triangle Strategy and enjoying that.

Last year I played much of Awakening in the 3DS, I got to the final battle, but I kind of stopped there because I seemed under leveled or like I was going to need to sacrifice people and wasn’t interested in going back to level up. Or maybe I was just doing it wrong.

Anyway I started Three Houses recently. I haven’t been too into the monastery and relationship stuff. I usually just go once a month. I don’t even talk to everyone. Maybe I am supposed to. I have been doing paralogues as they come up this time because I think I skipped those too much in awakening. I’ve played like 50 hours and am only on chapter 10 or 11 (I think I spend too much time meticulously planning battle turns). So far the battles have been more interesting to me than Awakening. Overall world/story seems like it may become interesting.

Haven’t tried Engage at all, but since I mostly focus on the battles maybe I’d like it.

Been playing on hard/classic.

Re: Super Mario World Lego Set Revealed, Here's A First Look

jon128

Wow this is tempting as SMW is one of my all time favorite games. So far I have resisted all the “18+” Nintendo Lego sets they’ve done. My kids have some of the kid focused Mario Lego sets (add all kinds of non-Mario ones). I was tempted by the Mario 64 question block as well.

Re: Site News: Suggest Questions For Our Upcoming Switch Summer Survey

jon128

@HotGoomba

> Would you be interested in a virtual reality Nintendo system/accessory?

I feel like if it is at all possible to pull off adding a VR mode to switch 2, Nintendo will do it. It does seem like it would be kind of clunky though (but hopefully better than the Labo attempt).

I am interested in this being a poll question.

I am curious about how much folks here on NintendoLife play per day/week/month. And also about other consoles and when a game is available on multiple platforms do they choose switch. Others have mentioned these questions so +1 for them.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (11th May)

jon128

After finishing Super Mario RPG last weekend, I started Owlboy, which seems cool, but since I was also considering starting Fire Emblem: Three Houses, I ended up going back to FE: Awakening which I had not finished. I did chapter 20, and am now on 21 which I’ve had to reset a few times. While I had my 3DS out I also played a bit of Donkey Kong 94. So I guess I’ll have to see which game I stick with.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (27th April)

jon128

Still playing Super Mario RPG. I have 5 stars at this point.

Trying to decide what I’ll play next. I bought Owlboy on a whim at the end of the sale, so maybe that. I’ve also been trying to decide if I want to get TTYD right away or wait (leaning toward waiting so I don’t burn out on Mario RPGs). I also have Fire Emblem: Three Houses which I got last year but never started it because I never actually finished Awakening which I had been playing. I’ve also thought about giving the Pikmin 4 or Octopath Traveller 2 demos a try. I am also curious about Xenoblade Chronicles 3 but I am not sure if I’d like it. I haven’t played any of these 3 series before so maybe one of them would be good for something fresh.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th April)

jon128

@Yalloo Thanks for the recommendation of Death’s Door. I’ve heard about it but have not played it. For me my favorite part of Tunic was the in game manual and discovering the world through that. I don’t think Death’s Door has that, but I think I may like it anyway.

I hope some future games explore that in game manual concept some more. I’ve had this high level concept for a game that I would like to play that would simulate gaming as a kid in the 90s. Maybe a game within a game where there are “real world” segments where you glimpse pages of strategy guides or talk to kids at school about it. It seems like it would be very difficult to pull off though.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th April)

jon128

I sort of finished Tunic this past week. I say sort of because I stopped enjoying the combat at one point and used reduced difficulty and even no fail mode to get through some boss battles near the end. The exploration was great, I just wish the game ended sooner (or that I had not tried so much and burned out on the one battle before reducing difficulty)

Now I am playing Super Mario RPG.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (13th April)

jon128

Still playing Tunic. I think I am near the end now. I got slowed down by a boss that I tried for at least 3 of my evening play sessions in a row. I ended up using reduced difficulty to get past it. Now, near the end there is a bit where I am likely to need to do that again. I really like the exploration and the discovery of the in game manual but I wish I would have been quicker to temporarily reduce the difficulty in that one boss battle because spending so much time on that put me off a bit.

Next up is probably Super Mario RPG

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (30th March)

jon128

After about 135 hours over 118 days I finally finished Persona 5 Royal. I’m glad I pushed through to the end. I do wish the same experience could have been packed into fewer hours though.

Now I am playing Tunic which feels like a really special game. A great sense of exploration and that in game manual is great.

Re: Celeste Creator's Next Game 'Earthblade' Gets Delayed, Will No Longer Release In 2024

jon128

Looking forward to this, but happy to see them take their time with it.

Celeste is one of my favorite games of all time and one of the few games have played through at least 3 times. I listen to the soundtrack frequently as well. Just thinking about Celeste just makes me want to play it again…. But I think now that so have finished Persona 5 Royal my next game will be Tunic.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (23rd March)

jon128

Over 125 hours into Persona 5 Royal and I have a route to the treasure in the final Royal exclusive palace). So probably not too much more to go. I assume there will be a long multi-round (and probably multi-boss) battle to end it. Hopefully will finish it this week.

Also in non-digital games I’ll be playing some KeyForge today. Only in recent years have I started playing collectible card games at all (starting with a bit of casual Magic The Gathering), but I have found KeyForge to be a better fit for me.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 9th)

jon128

Still playing Persona 5 Royal. Doing the 8th palace now, but I did the things to unlock the extra content so still a ways to go. I am ready to be done with it but at something like 108 hours into it I may as well see it through to the end. I’ve enjoyed it but probably would have enjoyed it more if it was like half as long and just more dense.

Re: New Metroidvania From CERN Physicist Focuses On The Wonder Of Science

jon128

Sounds interesting. I was thinking recently that it would be neat if it were possible to have a game equivalent of an Andy Weir novel like The Martian or Project Hail Mary. The first time I read Project Hail Mary I felt like the beginning felt a bit like a video game. This seems different from that, but still interesting.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 24th)

jon128

Persona 5 Royal about 94 hours in and at the beginning of the 7th palace. Stayed up too late one night watching all the interesting story progression after the 6th palace. I read that the game forces you to get to the bottom of mementos soon for the story so I am spending an in game day getting as deep as I can there since I had been neglecting it a bit. I don’t really care about getting and completing all the requests (I did some where I was interested or cared for advancing confidants).

I am kind of ready to play something else (been playing it exclusively since late November), but I am planning to try to finish this game first. I keep thinking about pausing it and playing something else, but I think if I do I won’t go back to it.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 3rd)

jon128

@JohnnyMind
Thanks! Yeah I plan to stick with it. For me the best part of the story so far was around the 4th palace. I think the summer just felt a little slow after that.

For the 5th boss, even after looking it up, getting a higher level persona, getting the right items, and turning the difficulty to easy, I barely finished in the time limit. I think now could probably do it on normal difficulty, because I think I now know the right details of exactly how Baton Pass works that is necessary for it. I think I get what they were going for, but I didn’t feel like the game lead me to the answer.

It is a pretty good example of the issues I have with RPGs sometimes where I find it hard to know if something is hard because it is a puzzle and I am missing something or if I am at the wrong level or if I need to use consumable items. I guess figuring out the answer between those could be viewed as a puzzle, but I guess I prefer to know if it is even possible to “just figure it out” or of leveling up or more items are the only option.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 3rd)

jon128

Still playing Persona 5 Royal. I am 77 hours in and just finished the 5th palace and got to the story bit that happens on the deadline date. It has felt like a bit of a slog lately (summer break was slow, 5th boss battle was annoying) , but I am going to try to keep going because I think the story is about to take some interesting turns.
