Haven’t had a problem myself and I’d say it’s slightly faster than Switch 1. Definitely feels like any download issues are with a person’s internet and not the system.
More costumes would be amazing. Idk why, but I love them so much haha.
Also, 3 lap gps seem like a no brainer. I guess Nintendo was just very proud of the “World” aspect, but a “classic” gp mode couldn’t hurt. They could’ve made it unlockable by completing the other gps so you at least had to play those first.
Definitely think this will be interpreted in a variety of ways. But I get what he’s saying. It’s like any entertainment product. Yes, at their core are elements of art, but they are also a product for consumers. Most movies, shows, books, etc. go through some revision to fit the audience and be marketable. Games are no different.
@Truegamer79 You’re probably missing all the Kamek characters. You need to be transformed into them when someone uses the item, then they unlock. These are characters like Swoop, Spike, the dolphin. You can look up a list of them, but good luck. It’s a lot of RNG.
Remakes are nice, but I’m not sure this one is really needed or should be a priority. I’d rather Square focus on the final VII remake and a new installment. Unless I’m just ignorant about how resources are allotted and it wouldn’t really impact other FF projects.
It’s dissapointing how they’ve let Mega Man flounder. I’m glad we’ve gotten so many retro collections and Mega Man inspired items/costumes in other Capcom games, but he needs his own title. They can’t keep using him as a Capcom mascot if younger generations develop no connection to him.
Definitely been satisfied with mine so far. I picked up 3 games at launch (MK World, Yakuza 0, and Guardians of Azuma). Still chipping away at them, but definitely feeling ready for that DK release!
@Teksette thank you! Nice profile pic, btw. I definitely feel that hesitation on starting big games, though. But what I’m liking about Guardians of Azuma is that it’s easy to play for small chunks at a time. I like to hop in and do a few in-game days when I can and I’ve been slowly chipping away at the story. I don’t feel too much pressure to finish it all at once, which is nice.
Forgot this game existed but impressed it’s still around. Still wish they had made a regular game instead of the freemium model, thought. I suppose one of these days I’ll check it out.
User reviews are honestly pretty useless since many of them tend to be in absolutes. Games/movies/shows/etc are either 10/10 perfection or 0/10 trash. And whichever users actually give nuanced reviews get lost in the sea of others. You also have the problem of there being no way to verify that a user has actually played or seen the thing they’re reviewing. Wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of 0/10s for MK are people upset at the price tag who haven’t bought a Switch 2 yet
At that price it’ll definitely be a barebones experience. That was my biggest problem with some recent Nintendo sports games like the Mario soccer one. Just isn’t enough to do
@Solomon_Rambling Absolutely. I also think majority of review readers only scroll down to the bottom to see the score. Which is a shame because most reviews have a lot of nuance in the article itself that isn’t captured by a simple score out of 10.
I truly wonder how this game is going to do on the Switch 2 when Mario Kart World came out the same year. Especially since with all the DLC it’ll be quite pricey.
Can’t imagine transferring the same pokemon from gen to gen like that and then losing them. Personally I always start fresh even though I’ve been playing these games since the GB. Each gen has a new team to use and is a new adventure.
It’s fine, but definitely more of a sandbox. Fun to explore if you just feel like cruising. That said, it is baffling there is no tracker for the P Switches and Peach coins though.
@OrtadragoonX Based upon your performance, you can be awarded up to 3 stars that are displayed next to the gold cup for that Grand Prix. Usually getting first in every race is enough to get 3 stars (though older games have made it much harder). So if you got the gold cup but say you only got first in one of the four races, you’d probably get either one star or no stars. It’s just an added little thing to go for.
I go till I get the gold cup then move on. Over time I’ll hop back in and try to get every cup to 3 stars, but I’m not going to prevent myself from unlocking stuff just to see some shiny stars next a cup lol
I like that it’s the first Mario Kart in awhile that feels like it tried something new. The connecting courses, the open world, and the variety of track possibilities is so unlike anything they’ve done before. It truly feels fresh.
Aside from Mario Kart, none of the other launch titles were grabbing me, so I double dipped. Just love Yakuza so much and was interested in playing this again now that I’ve finished the series. So far I’m loving it! It looks fantastic and feels like a true upgrade from the original.
I guess I’m definitely in the minority on liking the English dub. The Japanese is nice, but overall I prefer to be able to understand what they’re saying. It’s especially nice when they’re talking during gameplay so you can focus on what you’re doing without also trying to read text. Offers a new experience too since I already played it once with the Japanese voices.
As for the raid mode, it does seems pretty tacked on. Fun if you just want to enjoy the beat ‘em up gameplay and play as other characters, but otherwise there doesn’t seem to be a point to it? Other than earning money to unlock and upgrade characters that is. Big roster, but it’s a shame it doesn’t have a little more depth to it to give you a reason to grind out the money. Still, I’m not mad about having something extra to do.
Glad to finally see this review. The key part to me is that you said none of the mini games are something you’re likely to want to play again. If that’s the case, it doesn’t seem worth it to me. Would’ve been nice to have something in there that you’d want to play again and again, or something that had a bit more depth gameplay wise.
I’d say 2.5 - 3 hours for me. But in all honesty, I haven’t played Mario Kart in handheld for longer than 2 hours in one period. And I haven’t had to stop for low battery yet, but it will be pretty close to empty when I’m done.
@SwitchplayerJohn as far as I can tell, question blocks and peach coins just unlock stickers. That said, I haven’t gotten all the question blocks at a course yet, so not sure if there’s an additional thing.
As for karts, they seem entirely to unlock based on coins earned. Every 100, at least initially.
@ParsnipHero Fortunately the costumes are not RNG! Depending on what area you’re in, the food bags give a different costume if applicable. So for instance, when you’re in one of the beach areas, the food will unlock the swimsuit costume for whoever (if they have one).
At the moment it takes a little guess work but I’m sure guides will narrow down what costume is unlocked where, and you can just do it in free roam mode.
@DwaynesGames my thing with Welcome Tour is that it looks fairly on par with the games the 3DS came with. There were the Mii Plaza minigames, the AR card thing, and Face Raiders. So did those 3 games raise the cost of a 3DS? I guess they must have. At $10 though, it doesn’t feel like something that should be an extra purchase when Nintendo has included similar games with a system before.
And as far as the bundle, the 3DS had bundles that included Mario Kart or Animal Crossing or whatever and they still included the other pack-in 3DS games. PS5 does the same thing where Astro Bot is still included even if you get a bundle. I guess the Mario Kart bundles wouldn’t cost $10 more then if that’s what Nintendo is valuing Welcome Tour at.
I don’t begrudge anyone for buying the game, but it is a hard pill to swallow when other game companies — and Nintendo themselves in the past — have included such titles for free.
I’m a tad confused by that last bit. There is a “hidden” option to unlock medals for the games that require other hardware. So you can technically 100% the game without playing those? Or are you still somehow locked out of something? Guess I’ll just need to look up videos.
@Zuljaras I’m one of the Mario Kart addicts, I’m afraid. I was fully prepared to wait but the new MK just looked too cool haha. That and Donkey Kong next month.
A two year expiration? That’s absurd. Frankly having codes in the box for content on something billed as the “fighter edition” is always absurd. But we all know it’s there just to screw over resale.

Actually excited for this haha. The original was a pretty great Picross game (and I actually haven’t even finished all the puzzles yet)

So many Mario games hanging in there. He really is the gaming GOAT, huh?

Agree on the price point. I don’t think it was anything unexpected. Just a reality of inflation and increasing costs, unfortunately.
