Re: Video: For 365 Days, We Took Our 2DS Everywhere Just For StreetPass

Waluigi451

@burninmylight Nintendo did try to combat the rural issue a bit by partnering with companies like McDonalds to have “Nintendo zones” where you could pick up like 5 passes at once. I don’t live in a rural area, but I wasn’t in an urban one either so being able to go to my local McDonalds for some passes was a godsend.

In America at least, you’d have to be pretty rural to not live within a few miles of a McDonalds. I mean it wasn’t perfect, but it definitely helped people get easier access to passes.

At its peak, streetpass was such a great feature. It was even better when places like McDonalds would have “Nintendo zones” where you could pick up a few streetpasses at once, including special ones like Reggie. I definitely took it with me everywhere for passes and coins for quite a few years but, as they say, all things must come to an end.

I will say, as great as it would be on the Switch it just wouldn’t be the same. Part of the 3DS appeal was portability and being able to stick it in your pocket. Once I upgraded to the New 3DS XL I started taking it with me less and less because it was just too big to fit in my pocket comfortably. The Switch would have the same problem.

Re: Soapbox: Fire Emblem’s Future May Not Be In Turn-Based Combat

@WiiWareWave it’s a bad business decision to lose one’s identity. The core audience is what’s going to keep a series going because a casual audience chasing trends is fickle. Longtime fans have more brand loyalty as long as a series doesn’t completely abandon its identity.

It’s funny the article uses Persona as a comparison because at its core, Persona still has a similar combat system to the original 2 games. It never abandoned that part of itself to go full social sim lol

Re: Soapbox: Fire Emblem’s Future May Not Be In Turn-Based Combat

This take is very misguided, I’m sorry. Three Houses captured people’s attention for various reasons, but its overall success can be attributed to its strong characters and story. My take on the path forward for Fire Emblem is not to jump off a cliff toward social sim but to replicate what made Three Houses and Fates so popular: Choice.

In Engage, you’re forced to follow Alear and that’s it. There are no paths. But both Fates and Three Houses have you choose a kingdom to fight with and the ones you don’t choose, featuring characters you’ve gotten to know, are now your enemy. That’s what people like. People get passionate online about defending Edelgard, Dimitri, or Claude. Discussing the nuance of their various positions. It’s complex and makes you invested in these characters more than Alear’s story of “fight the evil dragon man” because, uh, he’s bad! It’s a more shallow story than Three Houses and that’s why people didn’t resonate with it.

Re: Review: Smurfs Kart (Switch) - Not As Smurf As Smurf, But Surprisingly Smurf

Waluigi451

Finally got this game, it’s currently on sale for $15.99, and it’s perfect for that price. It’s a really solid kart racer and has everything I want for my racing fix. Like this review says, it’s very similar to Mario Kart, but that’s not a bad thing. Controls are responsive, good selection of racers, and the visuals and courses are great. All around solid time.

While I do wish there were a few more tracks, 12 is serviceable. The 12 they have feel unique, but you can tell from the settings that the Smurfs are pretty limited on locations. I feel that if they added anymore, they wouldn’t have felt very unique. And the 12 are used as mirror courses, so that adds a bit to replay value. There are also time trials for extra challenge so they get a lot of use out of those 12 tracks.

If, like me, you want a fun racer that isn’t Mario Kart for some variety, this is a great option. Even if you don’t have any connection with the Smurfs, it’s a fun little game. Definitely worth the sale price.

Re: Nintendo Apparently Wanted Samus Aran's Fortnite Skin To Be A Switch Exclusive

Waluigi451

@Aerona Counterpoint, it incentives playing Fortnite on the Switch. That’s what Nintendo is all about, making sure you use their system because their content isn’t available anywhere else.

Guarding their IP is why they’re so successful because let’s be honest, most people probably play Fortnite on other more powerful systems rather than the Switch. Locking Samus to their system would force players to do otherwise.

Re: Soapbox: I Thought I'd Clear My Backlog In 2024, But The Switch Had Other Ideas

Waluigi451

Backlog is tough. Considering some games can take a 100 hours to complete, you really do have to prioritize what interests you.

My goal for this year is to stop buying things I won’t immediately play. If it’s a hyped game I’ll play right away then I’ll buy it. If not, it goes on the wishlist until I’m ready. It really helps because a backlog with dozens upon dozens of games is pretty daunting, especially if you just keep adding to it.

Re: Review: Felix The Cat (Switch) - A Cute But Costly Clowder

Waluigi451

The price for this is wild. It’s such a minimal collection. And Felix is not a big IP these days that will have people forking over the asking price to play. I just can’t justify paying full price for it.

I’ll wishlist it and try it out if it ever goes on sale. It’s a shame there isn’t more on offer here to get me to buy this day one.

Re: Talking Point: Why Isn't Nintendo Revealing Its Partner Devs Before Launch?

Waluigi451

Nintendo has always done a good job of placing themselves up front. Took me way too long to learn Pokemon was made by GameFreak or Fire Emblem was done by Intelligent Systems. They want the brand to be what people buy and it’s worked so far.

No one is buying a Peach game because of who made it. They’re buying to play as Princess Peach. The IP is what sells and it’s what Nintendo wants you to focus on.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy Advance Library Later This Week

Waluigi451

I can’t help but think it’s a shame Nintendo has committed to Switch Online for releasing old games. I would’ve loved an F-Zero collection that included the GBA games.

Other companies like Capcom and Konami have been putting out some fun compilation packages. F-Zero wooden been perfect for such a collection, but sadly Nintendo will never do it as long as it’s a selling point for Switch Online. Maybe someday…

Re: Talking Point: Should 'Third' Pokémon Games Make A Comeback?

Waluigi451

Don’t care if this is unpopular, but the move to DLC instead of the third edition is one of the best things Pokemon has done on the Switch. I much prefer being able to play new content with my team from the original rather than having to start over.

I did not enjoy having to play 80% of the same game for Ultra Sun and Moon just to get to some new stuff at the end. The new stuff was great, but having to start from scratch to experience it wasn’t a good time. I personally think the third games are best left in the past.

Re: Talking Point: Should We Be Expecting More From Remakes And Remasters?

Waluigi451

@Ryu_Niiyama well said. The only thing I’ll bother with in a game museum is photos. Concept art, promotional ads, etc. But even then, I won’t flip through them more than once. I never watch video interviews either. Like you said, if I wanted to see those things, I could probably find them elsewhere. But when it comes to a game? I just want to play it lol
