Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Res462

If the system isn’t backward compatible, why would you think any of the NSO offerings would just be there? If they’re starting over on one thing, they’re starting over on everything, including however they’re emulating games to play on new, incompatible hardware.

I would much rather see them employ techniques used by Microsoft to get more out of past releases on new hardware, allowing backwards compatibility while boosting performance with little extra work on the backend.

BC is a consumer-friendly feature that is a good first step in the right direction for any piece of new technology. Unless they can show a good reason why they need to abandon the previous generation, they would be wise to include it.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct, Then?

@5th313ment This is such an overstatement it’s not even funny.

First, they’ve probably put out the most first party titles of anyone this year, even if you exclude the remakes, and even if you exclude the titles still to come.

Second, not even half the games are ports/remasters/remakes.

Third, this direct was announced to be primarily about the rest of 2023. It was never going to showcase anything that amazing that wasn’t already announced.

@Dm9982 LA Noire does not come on the full cartridge; it’s a 16GB cart with another 10GB (or more) download. It says so right on the packaging.

I’m not sure where your statistics came from, but there’s no way 16GB is the standard cart size. The Borderlands collection looks like it’s 8GB, leaving you another 42GB to download. BioShock requires another 32GB download.

While it’s true that this entire game could fit on a cartridge and the others would not, that doesn’t mean they will use a 16GB cartridge. They haven’t announced their plans or pricing yet for the physical version, outside of a mid October release date.

@PinderSchloss

Probably not.

If you keep playing, you'll eventually get better accustomed to the controls, and maybe the final ability you get will alleviate some of your concerns, but when people say "when will this game click with me?" about any game, I personally have found that to not be the case very often. I enjoyed the first area of The Witcher 3, which a lot of people tell you to get out of as quickly as possible because that's when the game really opens up. The one game that really comes to mind (for me) is The Outer Wilds, which I initially put down after a couple hours, only to come back to it with a different mindset and end up really enjoying it.

That being said, I played the BotW DLC before this came out, and I honestly don't know what anyone's talking about when they say they're playing through the same game. Sure, there are some things that are really familiar, and the musical cues in many areas are unchanged, but nothing (for me) has that 'recycled' feeling you're saying you have.

Maybe try getting to the first temple and seeing if anything changes? It took me a while to even want to do that because there's a ton of exploration options available and different things pulling me every which way because the game is clicking for me.

@Zuljaras while it’s true that there is a Zelda formula, I think you’re being more than a bit reductive.

Skyward Sword changed how combat worked by turning combat into a puzzle.

Majora’s Mask added a bunch of side quests and had the Groundhog’s Day mechanic.

Phantom Hourglass had the Zelda stuff where you had to manage both characters IIRC.

Most games added new items and abilities. ALBW ditched items in dungeons and made it so you could tackle dungeons in any order.

ALttP added the dark world.

We don’t really know enough about TotK to say what it is at this point.

Edit: whether or not these changes were successful is up to you, and it’s fine either way.

Re: Video: Everything The February 2023 Nintendo Direct Didn't Tell You

@Friendly Not a chance they announce a new console in October of this year and don't launch it for months; when they did that last time, they discontinued the production of the Wii U in November of that year. Announcing a new console would drastically lower the sales of the current hardware during the holiday season; should the console be backward compatible, anyone looking to purchase the current Switch with a new one on the horizon would just be spending money on lesser hardware, price cut or no (and I don't think we'll get one since they're selling well enough without one and costs have increased around the board due to inflation and gas prices, etc).

@sanderev

I disagree. What it did by merging traditional souls gameplay and a completely open world made it completely worthy of the accolades it received. The game delivered on its premise in ways few games today realize, and rewarded thorough exploration of its locales. The variety and scope of the world was incredible, and I found the vision of the devs to be something truly inspiring.

But you’re entitled to your own opinion.
