Re: Pizza Tower Finally Dashes Onto Switch Today

@treechenho

I think a lot of people aren't aware of the casual bigotry in every day conversation. They don't believe themselves to be racists and wouldn't outwardly be racist but unknowingly engage in racism. Are you racist for saying things like that? Not necessarily. But are those things racist? Absolutely. Should you know this already? Yeah, probably.

Those comments, plus a few other red flags here make it clear to me. Awful people like this aren't always going to go to rallies and out themselves easily. A major MO of theirs is plausible deniability, which a lot of people are willing to grant them, unfortunately. You gotta make an informed opinion.

Re: Nintendo Direct August 2024 - Every Announcement & Game Reveal From The Indie World & Partner Showcases

Purgatorium

I prefer indie games but there wasn't much this time around for me. Suikoden, Dragon Quest and the DS Castlevania collection were the only highlights. Despite prefering indies, here I am excited for re-releases from Square and Konami. Ugh. What have I become?

Speaking of Square Enix. Kinda weird that the Shrek/Powerwash Simulator crossover ended up in the indie section.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Zelda: A Link To The Past And Four Swords (GBA)

Purgatorium

I like the drawn-on-parchment style of the European one but they did choose an odd image for Link. It's like the logo is getting in his way. He's gotta duck around it and close one eye to see around it.

Japan is probably better at representing the games but Europe got my vote because I've been here long enough. Y'all gonna vote for chibi Link. The European box art needed a boost.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Physical Edition Getting Wide Retail Release

Purgatorium

Having played them I gotta say, none of them supercede previous editions. The PSP remakes of I, II and IV are the best versions. V and VI are best on the SNES. The 3D version of III is best imo, but if you want the 2D pixels and the difficulty you can go for the Pixel Remaster.

But they are decent and playable. Music is great. Emulate older versions, but if you don't like that these will suffice.

Re: Random: How Do You Find Out The Best 16-Bit-Era Game? Play Them All, Of Course

People are way too hung up on the concept of objectively. There is literally no way to do this without personal preference. People on the internet see a ranked list and think it's meant to be objective and definitive. If there's a deviation from their opinion, then it's wrong. This is not critical thinking. It's the attempted appearance of critical thinking.

This is an amazing accomplishment and a lovely thing to share.

Also, Chrono Trigger is the best game ever. Objectively. End of debate.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Mega Man Zero 3

I can see how it's not visually appealing, but I get the feeling that European one is intentionally asymmetrical. The effect is better executed in the Japanese art and I'm guessing the other character is connected to this corruption or shadow-self. I haven't played it.

Re: Poll: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo Game Cartridge Design?

Purgatorium

I lean more towards the bulkier the better (within reason of course). I want something substantial and nowadays you get practically nothing physical from games. SNES/N64 were peak. NES was big but quite light.

That said, I did vote for the Game Boy cart. Physical media was still real. It managed to be both substantial and small. Slotting them into the bulky GB was real. The lived-in feel of a cyberpunk world. You touched it but you also connected digitally.

You don't connect to the Matrix with bluetooth. You jack it into your spine.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel - Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow

Purgatorium

The European one is moodier. This is a Castlevania game. Make it dark. I don't want any of those people in the NA/JP art to get in my way while I'm exploring Dracula's castle. Except maybe the woman in the red dress on the right. Bet she's a witch looking for some ritualistic chalice and could offer advice. And professor plum in the blonde bob would probably sell me something or turn into a monster. He can stay too. Everyone else can go back to the non-horror anime from whence they came.

Re: Soapbox: Why I Love A Good Map, And That Time I Mapped Yoshi's Melons For Nintendo Power

Purgatorium

Map appreciation article! I love maps. I have some old tattered game maps up on my walls from way back.. You can get old ones reprinted too. Physical maps really help you immerse into the game. Even platformers could use maps. I never played Yoshi's Story but I would have loved that fruit map.

In-game ones are cool. I loved the TOTK map and how it tracked your movement. But games need to come with printed maps again. That will never happen, but a man can dream

Re: Poll: Are You Ready To Move On From The Switch?

Purgatorium

I'll probably wait until there's a really good game I want to play it. Since there isn't likely going to be a new Zelda at launch, first party games won't do it for me.

The Switch is pretty good for the kind of games I like. I don't play a lot of high performance games. The only problem is that some system-undemanding indie games don't make it on Switch or take quite a while to get there. With a new console that might be even more pronounced.

Re: Don't Worry, Nintendo Likely Won't Utilise Generative AI In Its Game Development

Purgatorium

A lot of reasons why Nintendo shouldn't do this:

  • the hypocrisy
  • the legal ambiguity of copyrighting things made with generative AI
  • the damage it would do to Nintendo's reputation, in particular.
  • the fact that generative AI doesn't produce anything of quality.

Lot of people going on about it's potential. I don't think anyone has ever explained what it can actually do. Sounds exactly like crypto and NFTs.
