Re: Soapbox: FOMO Nearly Ruined Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom For Me

Purgatorium

FOMO is such an awful thing. Not acting on your FOMO perpetuates the anxiety, but acting on it, i.e. trying not to miss out, rarely results in actually experiencing the thing you are afraid of missing out on.

It's like someone who wants to have the perfect vacation or family event, but they ruin it by obsessing over photos and planning every moment. Ironically you can't experience it because you're too focused on experiencing it.

It's hard to resist. I got that feeling playing TOTK too. Sometimes I have to remind myself that there are a lot of games I've played later than most people and absolutely loved them. BOTW is an example of this. I don't know how I could have benefited from playing it on release.

Re: Retro RPG 'Sea Of Stars' Approaches Release With Another Stunning Trailer

Purgatorium

@ZeldaLord Sure, hype distracts from the substance of a game. It builds and builds and we get further away from reality. Often when I build myself up to get excited about something I end up being disappointed. At the very least, I'd like to manage my expectations.

There are a lot of things that this game is trying to sell that many have tried and failed to sell before: the nostalgia for old school SNES RPGs, a new Chrono Trigger.

I'm not saying this game will be bad. I'm just saying that the hype might cloud my judgement and so I simply want to wait and see.

Re: Talking Point: Zelda: TOTK Isn't A Shoo-In For GOTY 2023, And That's A Good Thing

Purgatorium

I'm not seeing TotK for this year. If the competition is tight, critics will be searching for small excuses and the fact that TotK is so much like BotW is an easy excuse.

I don't think TotK could have beaten Elden Ring either. I love TotK and I've never played Elden Ring but critics were absolutely smitten with Elden Ring. Gaming sites were filled with article after article detailing praise and even opining about how it changed their lives. Nothing else stood a chance.

Re: Talking Point: After Three Months, What's Your Zelda: TOTK Completion Percentage?

Purgatorium

I've gotten slightly bored with it tbh. I wanted more Breath of the Wild from this game and that's what we got, but I didn't want 200 hours of more Breath of the Wild. Of course, I'm only realizing this after completing more than 200 hours of it so I only have myself to blame.

It's a great game that adds a lot to the BotW format but I've exhausted my interest in it. I haven't finished and I'll probably b-line through the story.

Who am I kidding? I'll try but a cave will likely distract me. Send help.

Re: Kickstarter Is Cracking Down On AI And Promoting Human Creativity

Purgatorium

Tech bros think all new tech is magic. They can't explain why but they speak as if it can solve all problems. Crypto currency and NFTs have zero useful applications. When it wasn't fully understood, tech bros imagined any possibility, but when it actually got used it was entirely used for scams.

So far all I've seen AI used for is spam. Fortunately, it is so awful that I doubt interest will get past the initial novelty.

I dislike being so cynical but I can't help it. I don't trust Kickstarter after their blockchain shenanigans. Real human creators are suing the makers of AI technology for stealing their work. I bet Kickstarter wants to avoid any legal trouble. They don't actually care about ethics.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Has Been Rated For Nintendo Switch

Purgatorium

I dunno. Mario punts a sleeping goomba? That seems so unnecessary. And you don't see Mario jumping on those rollerskating Koopas but surely you can. Do they deserve to be evicted from their homes? What did they do wrong? Looks like they're just having a nice day out rollerskating with their buds.

A lot of enemies in Mario games aren't attacking or menacing Mario. They're just hanging out. Maybe it deserves a more mature rating. Fantasy violence more like wanton cruelty.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy Color Library With Two Zelda Classics

Every few months NSO gets updated and it never motivates me to subscribe. I keep thinking that maybe if Nintendo provides X I'll want to sign up, but now I'm realizing I don't think I'll ever want this. It's decent value but I just don't want it.

It's mostly the subscription model for me. The price is fine but I'm sick of subscriptions. I don't care how many games are on it, which systems or how often they're updated. I just don't want to subscribe.
