Re: Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time's Deku Tree Dungeon Is Still My All-Time Top Gaming Moment

Purgatorium

I love nostalgia. It's a warm and pleasant emotion mixed with a bit of longing and melancholy. It's not all a positive feeling and yeah it can be a bit depressing, but that's life. How are we supposed to forget the past?

And if you don't like this kind of indulgence, you don't have to read these articles. It sounds like I'm being flippant but, seriously, it's so empowering when you realize you can just not participate. Everything on the internet doesn't need to be catered to satisfy you. Not everything requires your participation, your appreciation or your comment. You can just not engage.

Re: Soapbox: Ganondorf's Villainous Intro In Ocarina Of Time Is One Of Gaming's Best

Purgatorium

Ganondorf was first named in A Link to the Past. In English at least, the name is mentioned in both the manual and by one of the maidens you rescue from a dungeon in the Dark World.

After looking it up: the maiden from the Swamp Palace says "You are the only one who can destroy Ganondorf, the thief-no, Ganon, the evil King Of Darkness!"

I remember playing OoT and thinking the story was the deeper lore hinted at in the backstory of ALttP. My impression from ALttP was always that the evil in Ganondorf's heart turned him into Ganon and OoT told that story in more detail. I've never really cared for the continuity. In my mind, Zelda games are often just the same story told in different ways.

I liked the unseen story in ALttP. I like it when a story or game has deep lore that is not made explicit and leaves much to the imagination. Prequels are rarely satisfying and it's best to leave things unsaid. But I agree, the introduction of Ganondorf in OoT was incredible.

Re: Mailbox: Mother Remakes, Dual Screens, Washing Machines - Nintendo Life Letters

Purgatorium

Earthbound remastered in the HD-2D style of Live a Live is such great idea. The fact that SE found a market for a game so obscure in the West just shows that Earthbound isn't too obscure to find a market itself. It's a real shame Nintendo won't do anything with that franchise.

Before I read the "Zeldies" letter, I thought it was a suggestion for a games award for the best "Zelda-like." Would be a competitive category every year for sure.

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Should Be Adapted For The Movie?

Purgatorium

I don't get what people see in the Ocarina story. It's the one people love and think is the best but is it a good story or just a good game? I think the time travel thing with young Link / adult Link would be disorientating.

The most interesting story, imo, comes during the young Link phase, but the conclusion would be done with adult Link, who would be the main lead (Chris Pratt).

Purgatorium

I played this when it came out and loved it. I never had a huge desire to replay it though. Unless this gets a steep discount in the future, I'm probably not going to get it. Despite that, I'm kinda just excited it came out and it's good. Happy for you all who've been clamouring for it for years.

Re: Random: Star Fox Dev Thinks Star Fox Adventures "Was Too British"

Purgatorium

@samuelvictor I'm not offended by that. It's true. A lot of what Canadians say about our identity is about contrasting itself with America and largely due to the fact that American culture is such a dominating force. The similarities shouldn't be canceled out. Things that are seen as American are also Canadian, but the emphasis is always on the differences.

I'm gathering that there's a subtle British-ness that isn't obviously British but doesn't suit outside markets. You could compare, say, the UK Office and the US Office TV shows or, to use a more contemporary example, the UK Ghosts and the US Ghosts. They have different styles of comedy. In the case of the US Ghosts, it's not as American as the US Office but you can see the clear differences between the UK version. Another example, I'm Canadian and I love Bake Off. The Canadian version of Bake Off is mostly the same but you can tell it is so Canadian. It's hard to explain to non-Canadians. They've tried multiple times to make an American version but the core format of the show just isn't translatable into "American."

OK, I'm rambling here. I don't know what this means for video games. What is a British game?
