Re: Talking Point: HD-2D Or 3D - How Should Square Enix Remake Chrono Trigger?

Purgatorium

@LikelySatan Toriyama's art has appeared in many mediums. The hand-drawn art he made for Chrono Trigger is great too. Remaking it in the style of DQXI would probably look fine but I feel it would take something away from the total project that was the SNES game.

I wouldn't mind seeing it. I've seen all kinds of CT art done in different styles. But it just feels unnecessary as a project for rereleasing the game.

Ultimately, though, it is just a matter of taste. Some people don't have any... that's probably unfair to say... but I've said it lol.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Dragon Quest III (NES)

@Perpetual_Change

A lot of games have maps and guides built into the game now, holding your hand throughout, and they call it quality of life. You don't need to read or flip through a digital guide either. You get a little HUD map and an arrow that tells you where to go.

Personally, I turn off those features when I can and use online guides, like you described, when I need to. But none of that can replace the experience of having a physical book with maps and lore.

For me, It's not really about the guidance but about the physical media and the deepened experience of the game's world.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Define 'Retro'?

Purgatorium

I use the term retro when describing the kinds of retro games I like, which is usually 16-bit or earlier. Only because it's an easy description. Many modern games attempt to replicate that style, not only in graphics but in gameplay, and I would qualify that as retro in a sense. I feel like games from that era are designed a certain way with both technological limitations and the expectations of gaming culture in mind.

For me it's not about age. It's about design.

Re: Nintendo Hacker Gary Bowser Says Conviction Was "A Blessing"

It's weird how some people are absolutely infatuated with the law. As soon as a court makes a decision it's all right?

Who makes the law? You all have your political leanings, I'm sure. Did you know that some lawmakers are the people you disagree with? Have you seen some of those clowns on the other side? The law is always right? Every punishment is just because they did the crime? ffs give your head a shake.

Re: EA Apparently Exploring The Idea Of In-Game Ads In Traditional AAA Titles

Purgatorium

You guys are against this but once they start putting in ads, late adopters (i.e. younger gamers) and people who'll grumpily put up with it to play their favourite games will just get used to it. Ads in games will be normal. Just like ads on websites, youtube, streaming service, your smart TV, your smart toaster, podcasts or billboards or on telephone polls, on the sides of buildings, train stations, buses, streamed into your dreams from Skynet. There's no escape. Those of us who remember the world before will slowly die away.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Want To Reuse Your Joy-Con On 'Switch 2'?

Purgatorium

I never use my joy-cons. I know they're praised up and down for their innovation or whatever, but they're way too small. I've never bought new ones. Sometimes, when the niece and nephews come over, they use the joy-cons and they still drift. They're garbage, guys. Never used them and still degrading. Seriously, I don't get it.

Re: Feature: 13 Studios That Should Take A Nintendo Series For A Genre Spin

Purgatorium

I Nintendo not meddling and diluting the final creative vision. It might be for the better; it might be for the worse. Better if indies stay indie though. These studios make great games. They have small teams and I'd rather not see Sabotage, for example , wasting its resources on a Kirby RPG.

Speaking to those examples: I'd like to play a darker, harder Zelda. I don't know about Extremely OK Games doing Splatoon but it would be cool to see a reverse situation where Nintendo does a Celeste-like Mario game.

Re: Feature: The Pitch-Perfect Storytelling Of Final Fantasy VI’s Opera, And How The Pixel Remaster Missed A Note

Purgatorium

A lot of fans love the opera scene and because of that changing it in any way was a risky move for Square Enix. It's a small part of the game that they didn't need to change to appeal to modern audiences. New players are playing a retro game. Why not let them experience a beloved scene the way it was originally made?

I'm a huge fan of FFVI. It's my second favourite game of all time, but I've never really liked the opera scene. The changes to the scene meant little to me but one thing in this article made me dislike it (the scene, not the article).

"Contextual prompts like these give the scene a feeling more akin to the infamous quick-time events of many games from console generations to follow. "

I'm an old timey gamer and I don't usually play games with quick-time event cutscenes. I hadn't realized at the time that was what it was. Now my curmudgeon alarm is going off. Press X to get off my lawn.

Re: Feature: 33 Games We're Surprised Still Aren't On Switch

Purgatorium

At this point, I'm not at all surprised that Chrono Trigger hasn't been ported to Switch yet. Same with Symphony of the Night. There's something about being "The Best Game Ever" that slows or stops the mad rush to port. I don't know what it is but there's something in the water there.

With Windwaker and Twilight Princess, I feel it's more about making re-releases different and far apart enough to keep up demand. They can't just be popping out every game for every new console.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Personal Favourite Super Mario Game?

Purgatorium

It's a tough choice honestly. I voted for SMB3 because I feel like that's my default. It's the best game imo, introduced me to the lore and really expanded my childhood imagination into the world of Mario, but SMB was my first, the one I played the most and probably the one I'm most nostalgic for.

And Mario 64 was such a huge leap at the time. I can't emphasize enough how important and mind-blowing the switch to 3D was at the time. It was a real moment and Mario 64, for all its faults, left such a lasting impression.

Re: Feature: Akira Toriyama, The Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest, And Chrono Trigger Artist That Inspired The World

Purgatorium

I don't know much about manga/anime art or how Toriyama influenced other artists, so this was quite informative.

My first introduction to his art was from Chrono Trigger, which at the time seemed like a hugely unique art style, which it is. Then I saw Dragonball and thought, hey, that dude's Crono!

Sad to hear about his passing. He created some of the most legendary characters and work.

Re: Back Page: The Best Cows On The Nintendo Switch

Purgatorium

I started reading while the morning coffee was brewing. I got to this line "this cow design is cow-shaped without being too literal or too boring," and realized we were going deep and needed to wait for the coffee before going any further.

The depth of analysis here. This is both important and serious. While pouring my coffee I realized that I didn't own a cow mug. Like I've drank the milk in the garden of Eden and seen my lack of cow for the first time.

Re: Talking Point: Is Knowing A Game's Ending Really That Bad?

Purgatorium

The question in the title is "is knowing a game's ending really that bad?" but the poll question is "would you want to know a game's ending before playing?"

These are two very different questions.

Is knowing a game's ending really that bad? No, it's not. I replay games all the time. I reread books. I rewatch movies.

Would you want to know a game's ending before playing? No, I don't want to know. If I'm playing it for the first time, I guess I'd rather not, but it likely won't change my experience that much.
