Re: Soapbox: These Everyday Items Trigger Me Now, And I Blame Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Purgatorium

Shortly after the game got released, I was sitting at a stop light and noticed a bright red apple on the side of the road and further ahead some pipe cleaner-like purple flowers. They looked exactly like Warm Safflina. My brain was fully assimilated into Zelda at that point. I had to resist the impulse to rush out of my car and grab them.

The flowers made sense but where did the apple come from? Someone must have dropped it from a grocery bag. Good thing it wasn't bananas.

Re: Talking Point: What Was The Best Switch Moment Of 2023?

Purgatorium

Best TotK moment for me is when you finish the Great Sky Island and you step to the diving platform. You have this gorgeous view of the whole of Hyrule. The mountains and other floating islands in the distance. Previously you spotted some oddly shaped structures and clouds, dragons etc. to tickle your imagination then you just jump off.

Since that wasn't an option I voted for the Mario Wonder reveal. Even though I haven't played it yet, I loved seeing it. Seeing the look of Mario RPG remake was exciting too, even though I probably won't play it. They both look so good. Just makes ya happy to see.

I agree with Gavin on Star Trek: Picard. In true Star Trek fashion, it takes 2 seasons to find its footing. I recommended it to my mom, who is an OG Trekkie, but told her she should just watch season 3. You won't miss anything if you skip the first two seasons.

Not in true Star Trek fashion, Strange New Worlds finds its footing immediately. It is a fantastic show, amazing cast chemistry, deep characterization and acting (which you don't often get in the Star Trek tbh) and it's funny to boot. It's a show that loves Star Trek. In the same way that Lower Decks loves Star Trek, but that's a silly animated comedy (which is also great). I am a huge Trekkie myself and while I have a great affection for the older series, Strange New Worlds might be the best series ever. My nostalgic love of TNG and TOS prevent me from saying it unequivocally, but honestly, it's amazing. It *gets Star Trek.

Also the latest Doctor Who is so good If you got into Doctor Who from the 2005 revival with Nine and Ten but lost interest with the self-indulgent Moffat era, you will love the David Tennant miniseries and the new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. It's a return to form. David Tennant and Catherine Kate jump right back into it. Amazing chemistry, hilarious banter and comprehensible, fun stories.

And the new Doctor's really got it. Haven't seen much of him yet but he's got an ease and charisma, screen presence and chemistry with pretty much anyone on screen. The Christmas special was a delight too. Russell T. Davies knows how to establish characters and get you to care about them in just a few short scenes.

Re: Soapbox: It Feels Like Everyone Forgot The Best Switch RPG Of The Year

Purgatorium

I haven't played it yet despite getting pretty hyped up for it. I knew I would take 150+ hours to play Octopath and I wouldn't have that amount of time with needing to schedule in 250+ hours of Zelda. If I had even more time I would have gotten around to BG3, Mario Wonder, Sea of Stars and more Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters

It might be a great game, I have no doubt it is, but it came out during a year of heavy hitters, even in its genre.

I still don't know when I'm going to play it. It's in the queue at least.

Re: Talking Point: What Classic Sega Franchises Do You Want To See Rebooted?

Purgatorium

Glad to see Shining Force get so much love in the comments. SRPGs still sell. There's no reason not to revive it.

Also Phantasy Star would be great. I feel like the nostalgia market would be huge. Phantasy Star built the sci-fi RPG genre and it's come a long way since IV.

Think of what you could do with a modern iterations Phantasy Star and Shining Force, Sega.

I didn't watch it. I got all of my news about it from this site. Zelda won, BG3 won, a new Mana was announced and some other games from this article. I can't really give it a grade.

I'm interested in how Big Walk turns out. Untitled Goose Game was so good. My partner and I had a blast playing the co-op mode. So many goosey shenanigans. But I have no idea what Big Walk is like or how it will play with friends. We need more info, House House!

Re: Zelda Timeline Is Only Considered "To An Extent" During Development, Says TOTK Director

Purgatorium

I suspected as much and good on them. Crafting theories is fun but I never liked forcing the games into a canonical timeline. Sure they can connect one or two games to another but it's just as well that every new game is completely its own.

TotK barely feels like a sequel to BotW to me. It's a sequel in terms of game play and setting, but the two games never seemed to connect story-wise. And I was completely unbothered by that. I don't know why haters make it such a big deal.

Re: Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time's Deku Tree Dungeon Is Still My All-Time Top Gaming Moment

Purgatorium

I love nostalgia. It's a warm and pleasant emotion mixed with a bit of longing and melancholy. It's not all a positive feeling and yeah it can be a bit depressing, but that's life. How are we supposed to forget the past?

And if you don't like this kind of indulgence, you don't have to read these articles. It sounds like I'm being flippant but, seriously, it's so empowering when you realize you can just not participate. Everything on the internet doesn't need to be catered to satisfy you. Not everything requires your participation, your appreciation or your comment. You can just not engage.
