Re: GameCube Classic Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Is Heading To Switch

Obi-WonTheHighGround

Like I said, I knew, or at least had a very good feeling Nintendo would eventually remake PM:TTYD. It was, still is, too popular a game to simply include in a hypothetical NSO GCN library. Popularity sometimes equals profits. A hypothetical NSO GCN library would be neat, though due to GCN sizes, compression technology would be a must, or a large storage medium, which the Switch does not have.

Re: Video: Let's Talk About Those Switch 2 Rumours, Then

Obi-WonTheHighGround

@GrailUK That is a great idea. It wouldn't be out of Nintendo's realm to do such a thing, as during the lifespan of the e-Reader for the GameBoy Advance, Nintendo (already) did make a Mario Party game almost exactly like you described. The mini games were played by scanning a specific card, or cards through the e-Reader.

@Everone Else: I'm sure the Switch successor is likely already in the production phase, and has not been in the brainstorm phase for a good amount of time, now. Nintendo, and other technology co.s have had the experience of time offsets from Covid-19. The Switch will have been commercially available for 7 years in the next 8 months. Once a co. gets their product out of the factory, they are already working on a new product.

Re: Feature: 8 Strangest Super Mario Urban Legends - Which Mario Myths Are True?

Obi-WonTheHighGround

There are multiple Minus Worlds in SMB. Same for the Famicom version of the game. (You can even access some of these by starting SMB, don't turn off the console, taking out the cartridge, popping in Tennis, move your character around the court, pop SMB back in, and try the last world played trick, you'll end up in a glitch world; Tennis changes specific rom values that SMB uses to determine the last world you were in before a Game Over.)

The L Is Real is myth another good one. I spent a lot of time trying to unlock Luigi in SM64. Likewise Ninja Mario.

A common red herring for me, when I was little, was that game manuals, and box arts convinced me there were secret worlds, and such. The back of the SMB3 boxart is a good example. Later, I discovered that boxarts, and manuals were printed up before the finalized version of a game, so those screenshots on the box were once legit.

Speaking of SMB3, I've always wondered about those hanging globe lights in The Sky (World 5, later renamed Sky Land in second version of SMB3), the tower that connects to the cloud portion of that world. It must be the mandella effect, because I remember them being in the game manual, though I must have been looking at the chain chomp, or the walking candle flame (can't remember the enemy name).

Re: Round Up: Here's What Switch Fans Are Saying About The Pikmin 4 Demo

Obi-WonTheHighGround

@johnvboy Earlier I stated that for lgbtqia+ individuals, they should have the additional options to specify their gender, and preferred pronouns. For individuals choosing definitely male, or definitely female, it's a simple matter of "he", or "she". Edit: It's a system that caters to lgbtqia+ individuals, as well as men, and women. No need to nix one for the other.

Re: Round Up: Here's What Switch Fans Are Saying About The Pikmin 4 Demo

Obi-WonTheHighGround

@larryisaman @jowe_gv @Nintendo-or-Noth I'm just used to, and prefer, that if games have some form of character creation, that it be a little more definitive: Man, Woman, and as I stated above, another option so people who are lgbtqia+ won't be left out, either. I don't like character creators being limited to only androgynous options. Otherwise, what's the point?

@Everyone_Else As I said, it's a good game, to me, so far. Also, I like the addition of Oatchi. That could add some interesting gameplay, it could make things too easy, or both.

Re: Round Up: Here's What Switch Fans Are Saying About The Pikmin 4 Demo

Obi-WonTheHighGround

The character customization options are very limited. Plus, it wouldn't kill Nintendo to have gender options. Male, Female, and Other. The "Other" option could have the additional option of inputting preferred pronouns, if the player wants to. All it would take is Nintendo writing extra dialogue. (This also applies to Animal Crossing.) I wanted my character to be a "he", not a "they". I see that as laziness on Nintendo's part.

The gameplay, aside from what I mentioned, I found to be just fine, so far. Graphically, it rings Pikmin. Sound-wise, too.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 24th)

Obi-WonTheHighGround

Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Mega Man III (NES)
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
MegaMan X Legacy Collection
MegaMan Zero/ZX Legacy Collection

Also, I'll probably be installing KOTOR2:TSL, along with the RCM, because Aspyr didn't bring it to Switch. I've played it numerous times before, and it's fun. On a related note, I wish they would port the Super SW trilogy, and Rogue Squadron.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope "Should Have Waited" For Switch Successor, Says Ubisoft CEO

Obi-WonTheHighGround

I think Nintendo's rule is, to borrow a phrase used in Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean, "more like guidelines than actual rules".

It's likely Nintendo doesn't want to cannibalize Odyssey sales, whereas Breath Of The Wild was already a Wii U title, then Switch launch title, then had so much coverage from the game industry, and finally had dlc. In this scenario, BOTW sales likely have lowered, and leveled out. Along with how far we are into the Switch lifespan, Nintendo probably felt releasing another mainline Zelda would be a financially successful move, whereas Odyssey might have held, and possibly still does hold better leveled out sales, compared to the leveled out sales for BOTW

Re: Nintendo Direct Showcase Confirmed For Tomorrow, 21st June

Obi-WonTheHighGround

Keeping expectations in check. Simultaneously, a new Super Mario title sounds awesome. I also wouldn't be surprised if NSO library additions are included (Mario Party 3). I would absolutely love full, and proper emulation of the Super Gameboy, N64 Controller Pack, and N64 Transfer Pack at a minimum. It'd be cool if Nintendo emulated the Satellaview titles.

Re: Feature: That Time Nintendo Played God To Sell Pikmin To Gardeners

Obi-WonTheHighGround

Actually, yes, I do remember this marketing stunt. I also remember when Pikmin was the new ip from Shigeru Miyamoto, and Nintendo, through their Nintendo Power magazine, was hyping it up. What made the GameCube more hyped up was the transition to optical media, the jump in graphical capabilities from the N64, and the tech specs, in general.

On a related note, I wonder if Nintendo's next system will feature GameCube emulation. One thing I'd like to see, is Nintendo emulating the N64 Transfer Pack, though that really depends on if they have just dumped the Mario Golf/Tennis N64 ROM images, or edited the roms to remove the otherwise inaccessible characters, and such.

Re: Pikmin 4 Will 'Rise To The Occasion' In Brand New Trailer

Obi-WonTheHighGround

@Baler Actually I was wondering that, too. Animal Crossing: New Horizons had "styles", where you could change your character anytime. I wasn't impressed with getting rid of the option to definitely be a man, or a woman. They don't have to get rid of one type of option to have the other. I think it's Nintendo's way of having inclusivity, without bringing attention to it.

Re: Star Wars: KOTOR II 'Sith Lords' DLC Cancelled For Nintendo Switch

Obi-WonTheHighGround

Yes, I have heard that the issue is Disney, because they don't like how the TSLRCM changes canon. The funny thing is that the KOTOR titles, excluding the MMO, were never officially canon on the same level of the films.

George Lucas originally had a perspective of canon as 3-tiers, with his films, and anything else he gave his blessing to, as official canon (1st tier). For example, the cgi cartoon, The Clone Wars, retconning the earlier micro series Clone Wars. The Force Unleashed was also originally given George's green light as official canon. Licensed novelizations of the films were also considered canon. Any of Lucasfilm writers' work was 2nd tier canon. Licensed video games, novels, and everything else (3rd tier canon) were not considered official canon, and only considered acceptable, as in aligning with the canon, if it didn't contradict George's (1st tier) canon. Anyway, Disney has already contradicted their own Star Wars canon, so it's a bit ridiculous.

Re: Nintendo Japan To End Repairs For Wii U When Current Parts Inventory Runs Out

Obi-WonTheHighGround

"Ouch!" to that one. Such a shame Nintendo probably doesn't want to have long support for any of their systems, once they are no longer the flagship. They probably go with a mindset of support only for the duration of the console, an assumed arbitrary amount of time, and then "extended" life support is then totally reliant on stock of parts. No material object lasts forever, especially in the field of electronics, and specifically computers.

At the very least, the faulty internal NAND memory issue has a fix already out with Link in the wild.

I still play content on mine, and I still have Virtual Console, and WiiWare games that are not available on Switch, like the SNES Super Star Wars trilogy, and Equilibrio.

Edit: Currently, one of the most popular reasons people want a WU now is for homebrew. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future, you start seeing custom built WU consoles. After all, Nintendo tends to have leaks every now, and then, and there was already in one leak how to basically build your own Wii. The GameCube, Wii, and WU all use PowerPC, and similar architecture; The WU basically has Wii hardware/firmware inside.

Re: Tetris The Absolute Grandmaster 2 Plus Slots Into Hamster's Arcade Archives Next Month

Obi-WonTheHighGround

I absolutely love the "Arcade Archives" by Hamster. Donkey Kong, Nintendo's Versus titles like Vs. Super Mario Bros., Tetris: The Grand Master, both Rolling Thunder titles, and so on...

My Switch library has an Arcade Archives group. Now, if only Nintendo would allow you to either put specific groups on your Switch main screen, or be able to jump to all your groups from the main screen. The fact that you have to go to "All Software" makes the grouping feature largely irrelevant, unless you have a boatload of digital titles to sift through to find a specific one. That's a very specific case usage.

Re: As Switch Momentum Slows, Nintendo Expects Further Sales Decline Next Year

Obi-WonTheHighGround

I'm deeply satisfied, and impressed with my Switch. Obviously, as soon as a co. gets one product out the door, they are already working on the successor. That being the case, the successor has probably been in development for a long enough time, that it will have hardware that will be considered dated, even if not directly out-of-date. I wouldn't be surprised if it uses the Tegra X2, or another iteration of that tech line. Nintendo knows they can coast on their ip pretty far. Plus, Nintendo's cinch market has always been handhelds (G&W, Gameboy line, Virtual Boy, DS/3DS lines, & Switch; I included VB for completeness, despite being a commercial failure.). Nintendo likely will not sacrifice the next console's ability to be used in some handheld/on-the-go capacity, for the sake of hardware power. Remember, not all global markets are interested in consoles; some prefer handhelds. Another option would be Nintendo going back to having 2 platforms: console, and handheld. However, I believe that they won't go that way, because they would be torpedoing their mobile business.

Re: Four Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Games Have Been Added To Switch Online's Expansion Pack

Obi-WonTheHighGround

Pulseman is awesome. Too bad it's a one-off title. I figured it would be coming to NSO eventually.

I have to wonder if Nintendo re-licensed these titles from Sega, or was able to use them from some previously established license that hasn't run out yet. I'm going to assume it's a re-license for some titles, or an entirely new license contract with Sega for all the titles, simply listing out all the titles Nintendo wanted on the NSO service.

Re: Nintendo Offering Refunds On Wii U And 3DS eShop Credit In Japan

Obi-WonTheHighGround

The process to do this sounds more unnecessarily complicated than it needs to be. Laws surrounding digital licenses for content (physical, and/or digital) need to be more consumer friendly. The more consumer friendly digital becomes to purchase, legally backup/share/sell license/transfer license/etc., the more willing people will shift to physical. Of course, there are, and will always be people who prefer physical. I'm just saying that some of the deterrents to digital are the legalities.

Re: When Does The 3DS And Wii U eShop Close? Nintendo eShop Closure Guide

Obi-WonTheHighGround

The main issue why official digital game services will never be supported indefinitely, or retro game catalogues will never be complete, or have everyone's favorites, all has to do with licensing. It would be financially too much effort to make sure every game from a given platform is available indefinitely. On top of that, some co.s choose to not allow you to purchase individual titles, either because they have a temporary license that doesn't include allowing for individual purchases, and/or the co. wants to keep you paying for a service. A lot of people overlook the concept of how co.s would rather you pay a recurring fee, than purchase once, and the co. won't see any more of your money. I think Nintendo known that as much as we might have enjoyed the ability to digitally purchase titles, they'd rather we be charged the recurring fee for NSO; especially since not every title Nintendo puts on the service, they know will not make money, or just break even. It's like the cable co.s, they know people aren't going to buy niche channels, so they have to sell channels in packs, mixing the least selling with the most selling.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel - Super Mario Bros. 2

Obi-WonTheHighGround

Both are excellent! I love that the Japanese release of the western SMB2 has the subtitle, "U.S.A.". It is cool that the game has that designation, even if it's no more than a tweaked game that was previously released in another market.

Neither boxart is 100% original. SM(B)2:USA is the Doki Doki Panic art, with SMB characters. The oversized border is because DDP was a Famicom Disk System game. It would have been nice if the art took up more of the box. The western SMB2 is a a slightly altered redraw of some key artwork for SMB.

My vote is for the western art. It's more iconic, and nostalgic for me. Minus the background, the western SMB2 logo was on a lot of Nintendo licensed products back in the 80s: toys, clothing, beersteins.

Re: Nintendo Badge Arcade 'Free Plays' Might Be Over For Good

Obi-WonTheHighGround

I enjoyed Badge Arcade. I like that it received representation in Smash. If I had to guess off the top of my head, Badge Arcade Bunny will eventually pop up in some other Nintendo console/handheld/hybrid. Nintendo mostly doesn't leave their IPs forgotten in history to die.

As I recall, you could totally, or mostly get the badges you wanted, without spending anything. That's how those kinds of games should be. You can pay, and simultaneously don't have to, all the while being able to fully enjoying the game either way.

There are no game-based themes, though the Switch does have options for White/Black/Grayscale/Inverted Colors. I suppose Nintendo's thinking is that most of the aesthetic customization for the Switch, is mainly down to your choice of Joycon colors/themed. So, in a way, personalization is kind of carrying over from 3DS, just not to the same degree 3DS has. (On a related note, the groups function of the Switch is not a time-saver, as you still have to go to "All Software", just to get to your groups. It'd be nice if Nintendo would allow users to jump directly to their groups, or a specific group.)
