Nintendo Of America is a mostly dependent branch of, and on its Japanese parent co. Because of this, it operates differently than a typical American co.
I wouldn't be surprised if some, or all of these are cases of miscommunication that ended up as one side expecting one thing, thinking one thing had been agreed/settled on, and the other side of a different understanding, doing something they also thought was agreed, and acceptable.
Plus, many co.s in America, and around the world have not yet gotten out of their Covid-19 mode of operations, where in the world it is appropriate.
@NintendoBMA: "I love the warmth and message of teamwork along with the importance of family togetherness. I can see there was effort to keep the people happy who are already familiar with the games, while making the movie accessible to new audiences. I like how Sonic blends and interacts with the human world. It actually works nicely and nothing new as the 3D Sonic games already contain people in it."
I totally agree with that.
@Everyone_Else The film was awesome. My theater has in the lobby some Sonic ring-toss games for kids, the posters for ticket purchasers. I have seen it twice: once with my friend opening night, and the by myself the next day. As everyone is commenting, there are some scenes that could have been pared back a little, although all of the scenes set up something revisited later in the film, and/or for revisiting later in the franchise.
Oh yeah, continuing the comment section joke: Morbius will outsell every Sony Spiderman Universe film (Venom, Venom 2, etc), and every Disney/Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date! And that's a fact (...in an alternate reality.) In all seriousness, I heard it's an ok film, just poorly paced, and a lot of people got tired of the delays, regardless of Covid-19.
I had previously commented in another article that I thought this year we'd at least hear about BotW2, if it didn't release. I'm not surprised about the delay. There are potentially many reasons for this.
I imagine Nintendo wanted to get this news out of the way, so it's a bad news item that can't be new information at E3. It can't be a black eye on Nintendo during E3, because they have already told us.
Another possibility is Nintendo is artificially stretching out releases. This may be to prolong the Switch, or could be in the wings for a dual console release, similar to Twilight Princess, and BOTW.
The opportunity to make the game better is good. Nintendo will likely make use of that time.
In addition to my above comment (56), I also believe Nintendo was smart to do this. Now that it's out there, this news can't be an "unfortunate" announcement at their E3 Direct, because they already told us here. This announcement now, prevents it from being negative press for Nintendo, instead of announcing this during their E3 Direct.
I assumed Nintendo would soon talk about this, to remind people it's still a thing; specifically, still in development. With chip shortages, and the delays caused by the 2020-2021 Covid-19 problem, it serves Nintendo to apparently flip the Switch for an extended lifespan, making this is a good move. It gives the Switch a title, that's probably going to be awesome, in its 6th year. I'm not ready for the Switch lifespan to come to conclusion. In addition, delays don't guarantee a title will turn out great, and simultaneously they can make a game turn out great, depending on the developers; in this case, Nintendo. I'm sure it will be awesome, as I already mentioned.
I thought I saw a Ms. Pac-Man graphic in the video. I thought there were legal issues with that, which is why the game probably doesn't have Ms. Pac-Man in it. It would be cool if it did. Along with Pac-Man Jr., or whatever it was called.
Some people enjoy developing for retro hardware. Of course, the CD-I was never intended to be a game console. It was always intended as a then-high-tech multimedia player. Another part of why Hotel Mario, and the 3 Zelda games were less than superb was that Phillips concentrated too much on the presentation of fmv (full-motion video), and not really much time into actual gameplay. They weren't concerned enough about anything, including quality, other than showing off the colorful backgrounds, and fmvs; key marketing features of the CD-I hardware.
Galaxy 2 for Super Mario 3D All-Stars. (Edit: As I understand it, Galaxy is not running on an emulator. Nintendo decompiled the code, and has the Switch re-compile it, for purposes of removing, and retooling features that were exclusive to the Wii hardware; namely, the Wiimotes.)
More N64 boards, and mini games for Mario Party Superstars.
Arms should be included (as a possibly unlockable bonus) in a sequel to the game. (Edit: Like how Factor5 included Rouge Leader in Rebel Strike.) It rinds me of genres where Nintendo predominantly only goes forward with one ip, like Mario Kart. People also like F-Zero, and Waverace, it's just that those aren't as profitable for Nintendo. Arms does not have to be shelved, due to the success of Smash, for example.
@nowthisisepic That's a possibility, although it's likely for another reason. It's possible Nintendo was able to quickly get the emulation of the game to a level of quality they feel is sufficient for now, and released it early. As I said, it's possible the monthly release schedule is picking up speed, although I doubt it. We'll all know if this more-than-one-per-month continues over the next few months.
@P-Man Yeah, like you, I'm almost certain we will see BotW2 this year, in some form. The Legend Of Zelda is one of Nintendo's showpiece ip (intellectual property/properties), so I imagine we'll see it during E3, or possibly during a surprise Direct featuring the game, or (a Direct) exclusively about it.
The Covid-19 pandemic also added time to the clock, via 2020-2021. I suspect BotW2 will make an appearance this year, or next year. I think It really depends on how much delay the title sustained vs. how much is complete, since Nintendo is not likely to mention it, unless they have some beta gameplay footage, or decent-length cinematic to show off. The only exception would be a title card, similar to Metroid Prime 4, just to remind people that it still exists, and is in development.
Edit: There are also the possibilities of Nintendo, to get it out faster, cutting not-so-easily noticed corners, like code optimization, and fixing it later via updates, or letting the game simmer, releasing it later for the purpose of Switch sales post-5yrs into the console lifespan.
Basically, this article points out the need of gaming co.s to make their games with emulation of those titles in mind; legal, and technical measures need to be taken. That's the problem with current video games, they are not being made with those needs in mind.
@UltimateOtaku91 If I remember right, you can, for most, if not all, selectively download update/dlc data separate from a game, even if you own the game.
I'll be looking for a physical copy. I prefer physical. Sometimes, the price cut justifies a download. Other times, the ownership of a physical copy outweighs the discount.
As I have been mentioning, the Switch will be 5yrs old this March. I would like to believe Nintendo will keep the Switch going further, especially since they only have the Switch as a hardware platform. They have profits from mobile, but only Switch for hardware. I would love to see the Switch go the distance, like the 3DS.
It's good Nintendo is updating their software. They are in a different position with NSO, than the Wii/3DS/Wii U eShops. Instead of an individual game that may have performance issues, it's an currently ongoing service that a variety of titles are a part of. It's a potential continual stream of money for Nintendo, provided enough people stay satisfied with it.
No co. is perfect. That is not an excuse for poor working conditions, or a poor working environment. It's just to say that businesses need to make sure their employees are in a healthy environment. Not necessarily comfortable, just healthy, which also means safe. Realistically, stuff goes on daily throughout all co.s that never reaches others' ears.
I still plan on purchasing the title. Like always, I will first be checking reviews, and such. I don't just purchase games, without seeing if I'd like it, or the game is playable.
Yeah, I'm sure support for various platforms will continue, as per current contracts. Afterwards, debatable... Additionally, many Switch versions of games will have to be built from the ground up, to be optimized for the console, or not released on it, period.
I might have gotten 1 of the spirits, during round one of circulation, or just seen it.
The Switch will be 5yrs old this March (2 months away). I hope Nintendo holds true to what they said at that investors' meeting a few years ago: keeping the Switch lifespan going far via different skus, and peripherals. Aside from the mobile phone games income, Nintendo now has only one hardware platform to make profit from. I'm enjoying my Switch, and have since I received it for Christmas a few years ago.
I would be moreso willing to download titles, as opposed to physical purchase, if said titles were significantly cheaper, in addition to my other reasons for preferring physical purchases.
Most co.s, including Nintendo, need to realize that upfront profits are not always better than long-term profits from repeat consumers/customers. Put some titles on good sale. Watch the long-term profits soar.
The beauty of the 2003/04 pc/XBox releases of KotOR/2, are that they could easily be modded. For Switch, it appears to be just the vanilla game, maybe with patches for bugs, or those patches will be added via later update. Either way, those tiers of packages are just ridiculous. If I get it, I'm probably going to just get it digitally, or standard physical edition. Those (tier) prices are a joke!
I will only upgrade to the expansion pack if enough titles I want to play are added. For right now, I am very content with a basic NSO sub.
I also don't like the AC:NH dlc being bundled in, if it's not free separately. Otherwise, it's paying for something that I will not ever use. It reminds me of how cable co.s in the 90's would put a literal few good, or popular channels in a package with mostly niche, or just unpopular channels. It speaks about the quality of the overall package, if Nintendo doesn't believe in offering (consumers/me) the ability to add an individual system that I want, or all of the offering, if I choose.
That said, I hope all of you who pay for this, get your enjoyment out of this.
I enjoy Super Rush, so the free dlc is a nice, and welcome addition. I'm looking forward to Dread, MP Superstars, and the Switch port of KotOR. Also, I'll be keeping eyes on Kirby. Edit: Also, I'm interested in the Final Smash dlc. That's a good name for it
The NSO expansion pack will be nice. I do wonder about the price kick, and how soon before Nintendo releases new hardware. I'm satisfied with my Switch, I enjoy it as often as possible, and I'm not saying I want new hardware. It's just that the N64 library shown seems like an exact duplicate of the Wii/WU Virtual Console library, and the Switch is about 4, & 1/2 yrs old. Unless Nintendo is going to keep consistent with what they mentioned a few years ago about prolonging the Switch lifespan, I get this feeling of a potential new machine in a few years worth of time. Nintendo has been very slow to add N64 games. If the price is right, I'll bite on the sub upgrade. Like I said, I thoroughly enjoy my Switch, and I am in no way wanting a new console.
It will be interesting to view a trailer. No matter the results, people will still complain. I highly doubt anyone would be making negative noise about Pratt, if his beliefs, and political views were aligned with the current moral, & political trends.
If people don't like the beliefs, and/or political views of someone, they just don't support the product. Nobody is holding a gun to anyone's head, telling them to see this film. In addition, being a Mario fan doesn't require seeing it, either.
@Everyone_Else I still wonder if Nintendo put new parts in the thing. Probably a new ac jack, at least. Simultaneously, I can attest to Nintendo consoles being durable. I can remember one of my used N64 systems accidentally fell from a table, landed upside down, with the cart inside, while it was powered on. I just picked up the machine, and continued playing. Similar events have happened many years ago when I was playing NES with family.
