Definitely sucks. Not that I used them that much, but every time I reached 699 or more, I got an Arcade Archives game for free.
Nintendo is devaluating its incentives more and more. No more Club Nintendo really good items, no more discounts on Wii U and 3DS games... The gold points is what we had left. Bad move imho.
I almost lost hope about a follow-up to the previous collection, and I'm very happy about these news.
This time we know in advance that there will be a Western release. Question now is will this time be released physically in normal stores? I have the physical Switch version of Kunio-kun: The World Classics Collection, but sadly the games are in Japanese, and they never patched the English translation of the Western digital release into the Japanese one.
I hope they proceed differently this time, especially seeing that the last two games are text heavy... but seeing in the trailer that some games are translated for the first time while the last couple aren't, I guess this is what we'll have, so there is only one remaining mystery: physical (available at Amazon) or not.
Plus I spotted an omission: there is no Kunio-tachi no banka here, but I guess that's because it was a separate release as River City Girls Zero, which causes a licensing issue. Too bad, but I'm glad for all the other games included, even the ones that aren't related to the Kunio brand.
That's more than obvious. And can apply to any new video game system.
Anyway, I was hoping for a 450€ with one game included. And that wouldn't be that much, especially seeing that there are powerful handhelds out there selling for much more money.
Wait, what if there were skins for the characters that allowed us to choose their own retro versions? A blond Pauline, Mario with a pixel look (or inverted clothes colors at least)...?
I wish there are even more characters and guests from third-party games. It's time for Sonic to appear in the franchise.
Anyway, it's about time to have a new Donkey Kong game. Really new. 40th anniversary was a missed opportunity for a game that people say saved Nintendo. I'd love a new title in DK '94 spirit: a remake of the legendary 4 first stages and dozens of stages completely new after that.
With no additions to justify the double dip, I'm happy with my Wii and 3DS versions. But asking full price is criminal. For people who didn't own it already, it's fine, but really: why not releasing it years ago? This doesn't give the Switch a sales boost in the end of its life.
I really wanted to buy it on Switch, after all I've been playing all previous main titles in handheld systems, but I was afraid that they would screw the frame rate up, so I guess it's time to move to PS5. There is no excuse after all the time they took and being the 8th year of the console.
One slight advantage of Japanese editions over LRG is the ability to purchase them from Amazon Japan and not having to pay insane shipping and customs, at least us Europeans.
Even without comparing them to LRG releases, I often prefer Japanese editions with soundtrack CDs -in some cases I'm not even into the soundtrack itself- and other stuff over standard PAL releases, because even with the shipping sometimes they end up being cheaper. For instance, that's what happens with Espgaluda II, Mushihimesama and Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu. We got vanilla PAL releases but the Super Deluxe Japanese ones have goodies and English text anyway.
I don't think the availability of some (even most) games on NSO has to mean that there are no people interested in owning them forever, not everyone subscribes.
Anyway, I bet they're going to release new collection not far from now, and that one will include, as usual, 85% of the games we already have, and a 15% of new ones. Roughly. And we're going to pay again. Of course.
It was driving me crazy, I didn't know what happened but now we know.
Anyway, I do have playtime showing in this period, even though those days the app didn't even show the days themselves (stopped on 12th). So it's weird to read that we shouldn't have those days registered.
Saw that coming. I didn't like what I had seen before. It's the same as with Joe & Mac. Nobody asked for this new art style, but at least they should offer the possibility to play with original graphics.
Good thing I have both original games on Switch thanks to the late Johnny Turbo's Arcade line.
After years with them releasing the games with no sign of getting a physical release ever, it's too little too late. We already have dozens of these games.
Anyway, if they can be bought on Amazon Japan it's good news for someone, I guess. I won't double dip. I didn't buy some of the games included in these collections for a reason, so I won't be doing it now.
Would've loved to get the original as an unlockable bonus.
I know it's on NSO, but I mean having the chance to own it.
With previous SNES remasters (Wild Guns, Pocky & Rocky and The Ninja Saviors) it wasn't so much of a deal, because they were facelifts with a couple additions, but this time we're talking about a NES game turned into a 16-bit like title.
I was watching its physical version on Amazon Japan, it didn't seem that it would be localised after such a long time, but now I'll wait for the announcement of a physical Western release.
Let's hope this means the price will go down as retailers such as Amazon use to slash the prices of their products.
I hope that the absurd price tag that has kept me from entering the series up until now is due to the collection being a Square Enix Store exclusive (although it has been available from other retailers somehow), and that wider release means more freedom to make offers happen.
In my case it's because I was waiting for a physical release. An indie like this, one of the ones which started it all, deserved a physical edition day one.
Many indie developers complain when the sales don't go as they expected, the creator behind The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa specifically ranted about people not buying DLCs, but I want to believe that I'm not the only one who waits for a physical release or a complete edition with all the extra content, and don't want to pay digital when there is a physical down the line for latecomers to grab. Done it many times already, I wanna be a latecomer now, if they don't release things physically day one.
I was afraid this would be down to it: just speed challenges. I love NES Remix, where the speedrunning was a big factor, but there were tweaks and unlockable things there that made it worth it to me.
The focus on online competition is what troubles me the most. I suck at it, and it looks like the challenges will be temporary, so a guy like me, who tend to play games when I have the chance and not when they're trending, won't enjoy it 100% I guess.
I pre-ordered the physical edition (why preorder digital stuff?) out of pure FOMO, but started to regret it a little after suspecting it would be no NES Remix.
Anyway, I guess after selling out it will be easy to find it a new home if I want.
@SpringDivorce I know. They usually got a little discounted and buying other items in the same order softens the blow, but the problem is they're often out of stock, like volume 2 for some months now.
Good selection of games, but as usual with Taito Milestones, there's a fair amount of titles that I already have on the Egret II Mini or on Switch itself, or that I'll have in a future Taito Arcade Memories volume 3 (or 4) for the aforementioned mini cabinet.
Too bad they're the Hamster releases but stripped off the addictive Hi-Score and Caravan modes.
Good thing they keep feeding the NES. A little more love for the SNES and the portables would be great, and the addition of PC Engine would be awesome.
I don't like Solar Jetman, that inertia drove me crazy on Rare Replay trying to get the screenshot challenges, but I see it is a beloved game, so I salute its arrival.
@BANJO Have you considered Amazon Japan? They will have a better collector's edition than ours, but also a standard physical version inexplicably missing anywhere else.
Well, I wouldn't call it a budget game. Its physical edition cost 60 euros. And a game that appeals to Nintendo nostalgia should have always been a physical widely available release.
Not for me. The nth remake/remaster, I already have it on 3DS still unfinished, but I'll be back. I guess the Switch version is the best one to get nowadays if you don't already own it, but it loses the stereoscopic 3D in the translation.
I'm not a fan of speedrunning because I suck at it, let's be honest. But I really liked NES Remix, despite having a strong speedrunning flavour, and yet the tweaking of some of the stages and games was the best part for me.
Now it's gone, as I was afraid, so I guess I preordered the physical edition out of pure FOMO. I hate knowing beforehand that I'm never going to be anywhere near the top of the online leaderboards.
They do it because they can, and their games sell well.
What troubles me is why they commemorated the 40th anniversary of the game that helped them survive as a video game company by releasing a remake and a remaster, and a few years after the actual anniversary.
It was time for a new platforming DK. This is the third time they release DKC Returns.
Still have to finish the 3DS version, but after reading this review I'll skip the HD one and stick to the original. For people who doesn't have it already, sure, it must be the best way to enjoy it, despite the lack of 3D effect, of course.
I was going to say the same as @SillyG. The previous collection wasn't and isn't available in Europe physically, I got mine from Amazon Japan. I'm afraid this will be the case too, but for once I'm glad this collection doesn't have any game that we already have on Switch, so no overlap this time. Finally.
I preordered the physical edition as soon as it was possible, but I'm not as hyped as then. I really wish they let you play at your own pace, not constantly comparing your stats with people online, ghost or otherwise.
It was a disappointment to me. I saw the DK cabin and got my hopes for a new game up, but no, they did it again: a new remaster/remake and DKC Returns itself. Sorry, but I already have it on two different systems.
After years of seeing that the law of supply and demand doesn't apply to Rocket Knight Adventures, because there are tons of it on second hand market yet the prices keep going up, I'm glad to see that the entire classic series collected turned out good. Now if only someone released it physically in Europe (thus avoiding LRG like in many other cases) I'd have the next most anticipated retro release.
Good to know, but I have all of them on my Amazon Japan wishlist. Physical forever if the option is there, and these games tend to come in great editions with soundtrack CDs.
If it has taken so long in order to be the entire trilogy, so be it. But if they're going to be released individually and take 3 years each, I don't like that as much LOL
Sonic Mania Plus came with a reversible alternate Mega Drive style cover. Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap came with a reversible alternate Master System style cover.

That's the kind of release I like the most lately. Give it the available-to-anyone-not-limited physical treatment, after all Digital Eclipse has released most of its collections physically, and I'm in.

Re: Opinion: Scrapping Gold Points Makes Sense For Nintendo, But It's A Bitter Pill For Loyal Fans
This is an ugly move, but honestly I have to say I never bought digital over physical for that meager 5% vs 1% of cashback.
Re: Nintendo Is Discontinuing Gold Points, One Of The Switch's Best Incentives
Definitely sucks. Not that I used them that much, but every time I reached 699 or more, I got an Arcade Archives game for free.
Nintendo is devaluating its incentives more and more. No more Club Nintendo really good items, no more discounts on Wii U and 3DS games... The gold points is what we had left. Bad move imho.
