Great to read this. I preordered the collector's edition without any review (it clearly had some review embargo) and for Switch 2 despite knowing that shmups usually have performance issues outside PS5 and Xbox Series, but I needed to start buying third-party games for Switch 2. It looks like I've been lucky with my choice.
It's all of the above: manipulated data, but it's true that people complaining on Twitter is a minority sadly, but also it's true that many people hasn't jumped into Switch 2 because of lack of confidence in the success of this second iteration, game key crap, the price of games and system or a little of everything.
There was a time when GKC made people go to PS5 for some titles, now there's people buying technically inferior Switch 2 versions in protest for Sony's announced murder of the physical format. Even defending game key cards as the lesser evil!
Who knows what's the real data and what is taken into account, but yes, physical is dying and after Sony's move it's going to be sooner than expected.
Want to support this, it's from a Catalan studio on top of everything, so it comes from home, but I want it physically. I'm going to wait because I want to be on the side of the patient players that get the fruit when it's ripe. For once. If it doesn't happen, well, there's always the chance of a price cut. But glad to see people is enjoying it.
I've been wishlisting the physical bundle waiting for a price drop. The first entry itself became impossible to buy, but the bundle is the way to go, although not at the current price. Will wait for a format confirmation on Switch 2 and decide.
It was always coming. Of course it's going to come sooner or later. Early adopters will envy new users, but otherwise we wouldn't have been enjoying the console for more than a year now.
If not, that difference and trophy support will tip the balance. I want to have more third-party Switch 2 games in my collection, but a game like this one shouldn't perform worse than on PS5.
Aside from that, does anybody know if the patch is included in the cart without the need to download stuff? The timing is weird.
This is a tough one. There's some repetition with the Jaleco arcade cart and other titles that we have on Arcade Archives. But physically and for a good price I might cave in.
Anyway, I wish (but I'm losing hope) that the JaleColle series gets collected at some point. That is interesting and doesn't overlap with anything: Famicom/NES lesser known titles that are being released individually but would make for a fantastic 10 title physical collection.
@riggah I always keep my eyes peeled when it comes to retro collections and revivals but had missed that one completely. Really interesting, more for the Game Boy and the new versions than the arcade original already available on Evercade, but definitely going to get it. Thanks!
The thing is Sonic Racing Crossworlds was supposed to be pushed back for a change in format, from a gkc to a proper cart, due to the impopularity of the former. Good move by Sega...
...and now this. I don't understand.
I guess the explanation came from the same place as the rumours about different sized game carts being produced: invent.
Terrible way to handle things, I don't know how it worked out with Dragon Quest VII, but they don't even offer a real physical Switch 2 version, so I hope it sells poorly (won't happen, though).
And we can expect DQ XII to be a game key crap too.
I love amiibos, don't get me wrong, but I don't understand this release's timing, yet they missed the opportunity to make an Echoes of Wisdom Zelda to match Link's Awakening Link.
Looking forward to a physical release. That would save me from having to spend money on the original, which has seen its price rise in the last couple of years (if only I could go back in time and pay the 50 euros for that complete copy...).
And yes, of course, it has to be played on a Switch, and on handheld mode. Those graphics need it.
@EVIL-C I understand what you are trying to say, but you'd be surprised of the amount of grey-bearded remake buyers. It's a kind of product meant for new generations, but the old ones double and triple dip.
Here are some ideas if you want to make the Switch 2 more appealing despite de price rise, Mr. Furukawa:
-Excellent line-up already in Year 1 (it hasn't been), it shouldn't have to take a price rise to make the extra effort.
-Stop game key card BS, just offer more sizes and leave publishers without excuses (I mean it, a lot of people isn't interested because most third-party titles, especially the big names, are GKC)
-Call the time of death on Switch. I mean support it with updates if needed, but people isn't going to do the jump if they can buy the games for the old one, it has slowed sales on Xbox and PlayStation too.
-Dial down on remakes and remasters. People already has the games on Switch if not previous consoles. New games, please.
These aren't out of the box ideas. The sales have been great, but all this is what has kept the rest of potential buyers from buying the new console.
And the price rise won't help, of course. It already was a pricey system.
I still have to play Switch 1 version, but I understand that it ran much better on Switch 2, so now I'm intrigued about what this potential new version has to offer. I wish it was a free upgrade.
I'm definitely buying it, several first party releases haven't been my cup of tea and third-party ones are plagued with the gkc format and the awful Switch 2 tax, so I need a win or my Switch 2 library will be really small and I'll end up using the console as a Switch Pro only.
But I do wish it would have more challenge or even a Kirby-like second layer of challenge for more experienced players, for example collectibles that are harder to find, optional trials, et cetera.
It is a product meant for us Nintendo and video game lovers and as such I think we loved it. Critics don't review things with this factor in mind, not now, not with superhero movies, so I don't care, I was smiling through the entire movie.
15 GB, huh? Yet they are releasing it on a proper cart with the mandatory 64 GB of storage space. They're not giving us a game key crap because of "we don't want to pay 64 GB if almost 50 won't be used" reasons.
One more time, a small publisher puts others to shame.
That's a recurring issue for me. Uniqlo's licenses are great, but most of the designs are minimalist or have great art on the back. I want to see my T-shirt design when I look in the mirror. The good old way.
I've never played any of these games and as a retro games lover I'm excited about this release, but thanks for the review, it will help me to lower my expectations.
Should have always been this way, due to lower distribution and manufacturing costs. Yet has been the other way around multiple times thanks to sales on physical games' retailers.
@Grimley141 I'm with @SillyG here. We're trying to understand why this particular release has been managed this way. The Switch 2 version won't benefit from the extra power. We love that Switch 2 proper carts are released, but one has to wonder why some minor titles get the proper treatment while others don't, especially those coming from Capcom (not this case, it's Digital Eclipse and Atari) and Square Enix, the biggest offenders being giant companies put to shame by small publishers that are releasing their unassuming games on real carts.
What worries me is the narrative of "real carts are more expensive than game key cards for the companies". In the first place, why? They said there is only one size of Switch 2 cart (unless they start to manufacture more sizes as they should). Of course the digital versions are priced the same. No s*it! The real comparison should be why the Switch 2 version is always more expensive than Switch 1's but also PS5 and Xbox Series releases.
Paying extra just to support publishers in releasing real physical Switch 2 carts is something we shouldn't be accepting so easily. Nintendo should offer more options, not only 64 GB vs Game Key Cards.
I've been playing Switch 2 games on Switch 2 since the beginning, except from Super Mario Odyssey, which had a free upgrade anyway, and now I'm playing DQIII, which also has it, so I'm afraid I won't be able to tell the difference when I put a not-upgraded Switch 1 game on the device. I've always heard bad things about the way S1 games look on S2 on handheld mode, which is the way I play 98% of the time, so maybe I'll never experience it.
It would be great to switch it on an off on a game by game basis, but I guess I'll have it on and just turn it off with games that use touchscreen functions. Not a feature that I usually use, though.
Well, as mentioned the Saturn version isn't present, and there were slight differences. I don't know why it hasn't been included, but it makes it a less comprehensive collection.
Still buying it, the main attraction for me being the MS-DOS version with all the additional levels. I already have original copies of the PS1, GBC, GBA and Saturn versions.
I purchased it digitally on Xbox One long ago, but my backlog got so big that I didn't really play it. Now it's time, it was actually about time that this not only came to Nintendo, but got a physical edition in the first place, which took really long and was unlike Digital Eclipse.
Anyway, I wonder what the Switch 2 edition has that Switch 1 hasn't. The extra money hurts.
I thought that it was a game key card because it couldn't fit in a 64GB cartridge. It's 27 GB. Would've sold so much that they could have done it properly. No excuses.
Again, would have bought it right away if it had come with built-in games as an offline product. It takes some space that I don't have and don't want it to achieve ornamental status. Yet the service will end eventually and it will regardless of my intentions. They still could release a pack with all the games, hopefully physical, down the line, after all they did it with Tetris 99 (sadly not with F-Zero 99), so never say never, but I suspect they won't.
Oh... I was hoping this time would be different, but I learned my lesson with Aces, where it was also 5 hour content for solo players... so they yet again show no interest in satisfying the campaign-focused player. I think I'm gonna pass unless some day it appears heavily discounted.
I've said it again and again, but it should have been a retail product not tied to a subscription based line-up. People would've forked the 80 € for this with built-in games. I certainly would have. For an item that some day will be useless because the service will be discontinued... not so sure.
I would hate to buy the Japanese edition only to see it localized later, I still wake up sweating in the middle of the night after the Kunio-kun The World Classics Collection case, but due to some games being text-heavy (I think, but don't know how many of them are), I don't believe we're going to see it here... yet the Kunio-kun games ended up being localized and there were many, so never say never.
Fun fact: they're games coming from Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy and Game Boy Color, which makes sense emulation-wise, but... they skipped one GBC game. Weird.
I had the chance to try the real thing years ago and loved it. I'm definitely attracted, but I wish they had released it as a purchase not tied to the NSO, with all the games built-in, a sort of Virtual Boy mini. I don't like the idea of paying 80€ plus shipping for a device that will only serve its purpose as long as I'm subscribed / the NSO exists.
I played it on 3DS, it took me 125 hours to beat it -that 70-ish must be for gamers better than me, and it always takes me longer to finish games than what How Long to Beat says-, yet I didn't have any problem with that. I never felt it was a slog.
I certainly won't be able to tell what chapters are missing, but I don't like that they cut things out.
I would put "game key card" in the cons list. Anyway, it would be great to read about how Switch 1 version fares against Switch 2. Many of us would like to have it on a proper cartridge.
It's been 9 years since the original release, strangely (for the time, because now you can expect this sadly) digital only, and strangely never made it to the Wii U or the Switch.
It arrives sooo late, but the two additions will make me buy it again. Too bad the Mega Drive version of Bonkers (or Talespin) isn't included. Development companies were different, so...
I'm genuinely interested, I really am, but I'm not going to buy an expensive device linked to a subscription digital service that one day will stop being available. I would have bought it with all these games built-in.
If I don't have to start from scratch after 100%ing it, I might be in... Provided that I can sell my Switch version, as I have no doubt that they will release a proper physical release of this version too.
I'm not interested in multiplayer content either, but doesn't the article say that there are new collectables?
I think it's understandable: it has sold well, but it does lack a really appealing line-up in the foreseeable future. I mean I want Mario Tennis Fever (crossing fingers for more engaging content than Aces) and Yoshi, but we will be needing a killer new Mario sooner than later.
I admit that I don't regret buying it for Mario Kart World and DK Bananza, but third-party with most games being game key cards has been a huge disappointment, and as I could see it being the trend and not an exception, I knew my shelves wouldn't receive many Switch 2 games and non-Nintendo ones would be mostly PS5 versions for this reason.
I can imagine people not needing to jump from Switch 1 because of the intergenerational releases, and then seeing what is happening with GKC, so I don't blame them for not spending that amount of money for just a couple of must haves yet.
I don't think 7 quid is an issue, games don't have to be cheaper because they're old, and honestly people that want them almost for free and scoffs at legendary titles doesn't really want to pay for games at all and probably doesn't, they're probably the kind that says "I don't need it, I have an Anbernic".
But I also think that Hamster shouldn't charge 15 for any release, Namco System 22 or whatever, and they should do regular sales across their titles, not only once in months and from a very reduced group of games. After all these years, though, if they didn't change their policy that means that it works for them.
I have the original Skyrim Switch physical version. If I understood it correctly, if I want the Switch 2 Anniversary version I just have to cash 9,99 out?
Can it be done in foreign stores too or it has to be done in-game?

If I don't have to start from scratch after 100%ing it, I might be in... Provided that I can sell my Switch version, as I have no doubt that they will release a proper physical release of this version too.
I'm not interested in multiplayer content either, but doesn't the article say that there are new collectables?
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Kicks Off 35th Anniversary Celebrations In Style
I can see a new compilation on the 36-37th anniversary
Re: Switch 2 Sales Reportedly Struggled Over The Christmas Period
Re: Arcade Archives Celebrates 500 Retro Releases With Special Commemorative Game
Re: PSA: Skyrim's 'Anniversary Edition' Bundle Is Currently 60% Off, Includes Free Switch 2 Upgrade (Europe)
I have the original Skyrim Switch physical version. If I understood it correctly, if I want the Switch 2 Anniversary version I just have to cash 9,99 out?
Can it be done in foreign stores too or it has to be done in-game?
Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Has Sold Over 6 Million Copies
I'm still waiting for a significant price drop, but this particular collection is always 45 euros to 60+.
