Re: "A Knife Can Be Used For Cooking Or As A Weapon" - Level-5 Boss Defends GenAI In Game Development

@PinderSchloss AI images are bad references tools for artists in the same way that Wikipedia is a bad source. Even if your brain tells you it 100% correct, you need to know how you know that. You need a photo to verify with more certainty that what you're looking at is based on reality.

Using photos from a newspaper as a reference (like your ju-jitsu example) has never been a significant ethical controversy. Tracing is only an ethical controversy when it's utilised to deceive others in a given context. How an AI figures out how to generate an image of a fighter, is an ongoing ethical controversy.

@molkom My day job is animation and yes; generating loads of angles of an object you took IS far off from when animation went digital. The point of art IS the manual labour process. The end product is new and fresh and interesting BECAUSE of the manual labour involved. My favourite parts of my job are when I get paid to do things that are difficult and not strictly necessary for the company's end product, but strengthen my understanding of the craft and help make the end product look that bit more fresh and interesting. My least favourite bits are when I have do get out of the driver's seat and mindlessly click buttons and let the computer do all the manual labour. Like, art is not just about having the coolest ideas that pop into your head. Ai doesn't lead to better artistic output simply by virtue of letting you get the idea out faster.

It's always clear to me that the people who make arguments in favour of AI citing "less work for artists" don't make art of their own and don't take it seriously. And that's okay, I don't cook but like I'm gonna take my food opinions with a grain of salt when I'm talking to a chef!

Re: Ubisoft Employee Explains Why Star Wars Outlaws Is A Game-Key Card

LordPieFace

Honestly while I don't like these responses at face value, the fact that he openly admitted how the situation sucks suggests to me that it's genuine and may go SOME way to explaining the game-key card phenomenon among devs. DOESN'T explain why Square and SEGA went so all-in on game key cards for last-gen games though. Well, we know why, £££, but yeah.

I'm actually shocked that the Western boxart won by such a large margin. Looks cheesy, unclassy, like the call-of-Duty "Man with Gun" covers but for snowboarding. Japanese one has the vibe down a lot more. It may look like an ad, but it's a damn good ad!

Re: Sony Vet Shuhei Yoshida Says Nintendo Is "Losing Their Identity" With Switch 2

LordPieFace

Shuhei IS right. He's usually first to praise Nintendo's work. The fact that Nintendo's marketing Switch 2 by leaning so heavily on its beefy specs , while efforts to push the mouse feature are hushed & subdued, suggests that they're afraid to get too experimental. It's different from the Iwata philosophy. Besides first-party games, I see little reason to build my third-party library on Switch 2 instead of Steam Deck.

Yes many other Nintendo consoles pre-Iwata were defined largely by their graphical horsepower, but it's Iwata's philosophies that defined Nintendo as the Innovation Guys. Wii U and 3DS were upgrades, but they used their technological advancements to try things that were cool, even if theybwere doomed to be cast aside for the next console.

Re: PSA: Switch Online Includes Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack Access At "No Additional Cost"

LordPieFace

All of the incentives to try sweeten the deal for gated-off Online have always felt super slimy. I would happily take no Retro games, no Tetris 99, no free game upgrades or DLC expansions, if it meant that I could play Splatoon online for free.

Consoles requiring paid online is the most successful swindle in gaming and for me it free online was a legitimate selling point for the Wii U.

Re: Sony Lays Off 900 PlayStation Employees, Closes London Studio & Cancels Projects

@Setery I'm reminded of when MS & Sony were buying studios left & right, and investors were pressuring Nintendo to buy up other studios to compete. But Nintendo seems to have always been cautious on growth. Instead of buying Studios they seem to outsource a lot of 1st Party games to companies like Bandai Namco, and foster those relationships with the companies. Sony's not as guilty as Microsoft for snapping up random studios desperately, but they are indeed hellbent on growth and expansion to their own detriment.
