Re: Atlus Listening To Etrian Odyssey Fan Feedback For Future Entries

Krisi

I'm gonna get so much hate for this.

I like all sorts of games. I try to play them with an open mind, and it's very rare that I play a game for a little while and don't at least get why people like it. So I tried out the demo of the remake of the first game on the 3DS before the eShop closed down, to see if I wanted to download the full game.

...It's not that I didn't like it. It's more like I couldn't fathom why anyone would enjoy this game. This pretty much never happens. The first-person camera with the same-looking corridors is bad enough, the battles seemed like the most basic RPG battles (which is not really a bad thing, but I don't think simple RPG battles are particularly enjoyable against common enemies), and the fact that you have to make your own maps seemed more cumbersome than anything. I could not see the draw (no pun intended) in stopping every few steps in an already very uninteresting looking, hard to navigate maze to just trace the walls of the path that the game already lit up for me. I get that exploring a new place is exciting, but this is just making you do extra steps that's not challenging or fun in the slightest. In my opinion, it would've been much better if either you had absolutely no map drawn for you whatsoever, and you had to basically create one like it was on a separate piece of paper, or if the game just drew everything for you. But even then, I don't think I would enjoy it, but at least I could understand why someone else would. And it's not the basic structure of the main game I dislike so much, I absolutely love Shiren the Wanderer for example.

But yeah, I'm glad this game makes so many people happy. I'm starting to feel like a weirdo for not enjoying it one bit. This really never happens.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Library With Another Game Next Week

Krisi

@RubyCarbuncle They didn't fix Bind, because that was intentionally how it worked in Gen 1. They did fix stuff like Focus Energy, which had the opposite effect from what it should've had, and they even reduced the amount of turns for sleep to make it more balanced.
But while Bind/Wrap/Fire Spin/Clamp are pretty good moves in Gen 1, they are still not too overpowered. They are all pretty inaccurate, and unlike in later gens, you could just switch out and the move would end immediately.

Re: Best WarioWare Games Of All Time

Krisi

@somnambulance I guess because the games were kind of less random - you controlled a small character in literally every single one, and they all had to be beatable with the moves of any character.
But I kind of agree with you, it worked surprisingly well, and it's great fun.

Re: Best WarioWare Games Of All Time

Krisi

I'm glad the first one is first. It remained my favorite after all these years. It's simple but fun, it was extremely fresh, and it had the most fleshed out side-games, and there were tons of them.
Gold would be my second favorite I guess. But Smooth Moves is up there with its multiplayer.

Re: Talking Point: Which Gaming Moments Made You Question Your Intelligence?

Krisi

Pokémon Crystal was my first Pokémon game when I was around 10. I could barely understand English, but I'm not sure it's really relevant here, because...
For one, I used my Master Ball on a Chansey. I thought it was so rare that I pretty much needed to use it.
Why didn't I use it on the legendary beasts? Well, because... I defeated them. And I was so proud, I remember searching for an NPC that would congratulate me on such a feat. Well, the only thing I accomplished is locking myself out of the Ho-oh sidequest, because you need to catch the three legendaries for that to happen (and trading them over does not work). Well.

Re: Japanese Best-Seller 'Ninja JaJaMaru' Gets Multiple Collections On Switch

Krisi

@PKDuckman Yeah, but the thing is that the Ninja-kun and Ninja Jajamaru-kun are different series by different companies. As I understand it, the original Ninja Jajamaru came about by Jaleco randomly deciding make an own game using the sprite from the Ninja-kun games they ported to the Famicom. But then again, Super Ninja-kun is on the collection, so... I don't know.

Re: Quiz: Do You Know The Meaning Behind These Pokémon Names?

Krisi

18/20. I'm really embarrassed about the Steenee one, I know I heard of them based on mangosteens. The other one I messed up was Mareep - that's the first time I heard of its name's origin, and it's pretty clever.

By the way, "nido" isn't the Japanese word for needle, it's "hari". But it's somewhat similar to how they would write/pronounce the English word "needle" (niidoru), which might be the actual origin. Then again, "ni" is "two", and "do" can mean "-times", so "nido" can also mean "twice", which might be a reference to how the Nidoran family is made of two evolution lines, but that might be a stretch.

Re: Japanese Best-Seller 'Ninja JaJaMaru' Gets Multiple Collections On Switch

Krisi

@HammerGalladeBro I think it makes some sense. The two separate ones are a Zelda-like and an RPG, and some people might not enjoy them if they were looking for some platforming action. Or some people only like adventure games, and are only interested in the smaller collection.

Anyway, I've pre-ordered the full collection months ago. I somewhat rarely pre-order games, but just die for semi-obscure Japanese retro games. And I've played 3 of these already, and they were quite fun.

Re: Chocobo GP To Get "No Further Large Scale Updates", Mythril Sales Discontinued

Krisi

@Dogorilla The free version only lets you play the online tournaments, and only has the beginning of story mode. The full version has the full story mode (obviously), more characters, a time trial mode and a series mode (basically like grand prix in Mario Kart), local multiplayer, and probably some more unlockables. The free version is like an expanded demo.

Re: Poll: What Was The First Pokémon Game You Played? Nintendo Wants To Know

Krisi

Crystal. Here in Hungary, much fewer kids had Game Boys (or any Nintendo systems for that matter), so I didn't really see others before that with the games. The anime and merch was pretty popular though, but all that only came here in 2000.

But I remember learning about Pokémon in Super Smash Bros before that. You know, I gravitated to that game because it had Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, and even Kirby, and then there was this yellow rodent thing and this Kirby-like singing guy and there were these balls you could throw that would release some other fantastic monsters. It really intrigued me. Then it was a revelation to me when I saw that it had an anime series about it when randomly switching the TV to some random German channel. Then when they announced that it would come to Hungary, I was really hyped from the start, and pretty much became the biggest Pokémon know-it-all in my class and friend circle. Then when I got Crystal (and later the other games as well) I was instantly hooked even though my English skills were not too great when I was around 10. Actually I learned so many new words and stuff from those games.

Re: Poll: So, Animal Crossing: New Leaf Or New Horizons - Which Do You Like Best?

Krisi

New Leaf has Panel de Pon, so it's instantly better.
But still, I liked New Leaf more. New Horizons was very bare bores at the beginning, and what they added with updates was mostly stuff that was already available from the start in older games. It still became a really packed game and had its great ideas from the start, but New Leaf wins out for me.
Oh yeah, and the crafting. While it was a neat idea, it became mostly a chore making new tools all the time, and also hitting random trees and rocks without end to have enough ingredients for everything. And while it was exciting at first, it really just became busywork - even more so than anything else seen in Animal Crossing games.

Re: Random: Pixel Artist Reimagines Paper Mario For Game Boy Advance

Krisi

@Aozz101x I don't think it's that shocking. The fact that the characters are paper is only really visible in an otherwise 3D game, where you can see how flat everything is compared to the backgrounds and structures, and that they are just flat sprites when they turn around. Sure, it could work some extent in 2D with some animation tricks, but the effect wouldn't be that pronounced. These fan-made screenshots are absolutely lovely, but it's not quite obvious that the characters are made out of paper to anyone not familiar with the original. I just don't think they would've done a Paper Mario game before the original DS.

Re: Back Page: All The Pokémon From Scarlet And Violet So Far, Ranked From Worst To Best

Krisi

Kabuto has some fake eyes. Also Masquerain I guess? And Dusknoir. And Sigilyph! Does Yamask count? Tapu Koko. Okay, Koffing does not count with the eyes of its skull marking, right? Ooooh Lileep and Cradily used to fool me so bad. Spinarak and Ariados. Ariados even has some Pokédex entries I think that say it's very hard to tell which end is which, which was always a bit silly to me. Also Falinks when it's defending I guess. Arbok! That definitely counts. And Goomy of course. This concludes my list of Pokémon with fake eyes I could come up with on the spot.

And come on, poison type Pokémon are really cool. It's one of my favorite types. But bug Pokémon ARE cute, so okay, you get a point.

Re: Switch Online Versions Of Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2 Won't Support Transfers

Krisi

@TommyTendo Yeah, it's definitely a balance thing. I mean it's like the game has a bigger roster right? You can't only use the final evolutions, but the weaker forms as well because they have the better moves.
But still, later opponents, especially in R2 are using the strongest evolutions with the best movesets, so you don't really have much of a chance with just rentals.

Re: Switch Online Versions Of Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2 Won't Support Transfers

Krisi

@ChibiSmoothie It does not really work that way. When importing Pokémon, you're still limited to the levels the game allows. So for cups with level 50 Pokémon, you can't use anything that's higher than that. Rental Pokémon, however, have horrible movesets that make it more frustrating than challenging to complete everything. Wanna use Charizard? I hope you like Ember and Scratch. Oh, you wanted to use Flamethrower and Slash? Gotta go with Charmander then with its horrible stats.

Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Legend Of Zelda Game?

Krisi

A Link to the Past.
I was around 3 or 4 (so it was around '95-96) when my dad bought it for us when he was working in Germany. It was in German. Which did not really matter that much, as I could not read in any language yet. But my mom was playing it more at that time, and she didn't know German either. It was still so intriguing and wonderful. Both me and my mom have been in love with the franchise since then, and we both played though all the games.

Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Series Would Work Best As A Free-To-Play Game?

Krisi

None of them, please. This trend needs to stop.
I understand that it won't and it makes quite some money for the developers, but speaking in hindsight as someone who got sucked into quite a lot of these: they all waste your time so much more than any other "paid" game. Sure, the more clever ones are made in a way that you don't really notice and they feel addicting, but you could use that time so much better. Even for other games.

If you don't let them waste your money, that means you bought stuff from them already - probably for even more money than a new game would cost. Now is Fire Emblem Heroes really that well-made or interesting as any of the mainline games? How about Mario Kart Tour? Or Animal Crossing Pocket Camp?
