Re: Anniversary: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Turn 20 Years Old In The US

Krisi

If I remember correctly, LeafGreen was the first video game I bought on launch day with my own money. I was 12, and we only had the Internet for about a year at that point, so I wasn't really well informed about release dates before. I did play and love all the previous Pokémon games, but I played gen 1 after 2 originally, and I experienced most of its "shortcomings" and lack of quality of life improvements seen in the later games as annoying, so I was looking forward to the remake. And I did really like it. Nowadays, I actually think I prefer the originals, but FR/LG is really nice as well, and would probably suggest it over R/B/Y or Let's Go to people without prior experience with the series, or just Kanto itself.

I'm pretty sure I only bought main series Pokémon games on launch day after that point until I wanna say Super Paper Mario on a whim. The original Paper Mario is my favorite game to this day, and I just finished TTYD that summer, so I was like why not, even though the trailer I saw didn't really blow me away. The game itself turned out to be awesome, so all's good.

Re: Nintendo Direct June 2024: Time, Where To Watch, What To Expect

Krisi

Also some of my biggest wishes:
-New Rhythm Heaven
-A New Donkey Kong Country or Wario Land game
-Dragon Quest III remake release date, and the reveal of it actually being the remake of 1-3.
-Mameda no Bakeru finally coming out in English
-And on that note, Ganbare Goemon collection, baby!

I would be really happy of either of these was in.

Re: Best Pikmin Games

Krisi

You can flip the New Play Control games' covers for one that takes up the entire sheet. At least in Europe, I don't know about the rest of the world.

For me, idk what would the lineup be. I haven't played Bloom, and Hey is the last one for sure. 3 was the one that grabbed me the most. 1 is better than 2 for me, even though 2 is really good as well. 4 is... well, it was a bit disappointing for me, because it's too easy, but it adds so much new stuff that it's hard to dislike. And the mini Pikmin 1 remake is awesome. I'd probably still put it behind the rest.

So I think my list would be 3 > 1 > 2 > 4 > Hey.
I don't think many would agree with me.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS)

Krisi

@EarthboundBenjy And about Pokémon Dash... It's probably the worst game I've ever finished. It's incredibly bad. Like I am absolutely shocked how anyone in the development team thought it was worth releasing. How anyone expected it would even reach the quality of a 2/10 game. And I've beaten horrible games like Super Monkey Daibouken for the Famicom and Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for the Game Boy.
It's a racing game, you've got that right. You only have one character, Pikachu, no special moves or anything you could think of or anything. It pretty much has nothing to do with Pokémon except for the fact that all the racers are Pokémon sprites. You could change them to little cars or something and the game would not change a bit. I think a Pokémon game has to do at least something that relates to Pokémon in some way, or it's just a shameless cash grab trying to milk the name recognition for more sales.
But yeah, that part's just insulting. The really horrible part is everything else. You race by sliding the stylus rapidly on the screen in the direction you want to go. It's not fun at all, does not add anything to the game, and destroys your touch screen. It took me like 2 hours to finish the game, and the film on my screen had become noticeably much more scratched just in that amount of time. So it's a game that actually has negative impact on your hardware.
But would it be even decent with normal controls? No way. It has just a few cups, and each cup works like this: you have a stage you have to traverse, and it's fairly small. Then the next stage is the exact same, just expanded a bit. Then again. Then again. With very poorly designed stages that have no real roads or obstacles, only stuff that slow you down, placed down without too much thought. At the end, you navigate through a really large stage with checkpoints randomly thrown around it, and finding them in the correct order can be pretty confusing as well. And even with this much padding, it's extremely light on content. Which I think is the only positive trait of the game, because at least you can just finish it in one sitting and never touch it again. No wonder it was made by Ambrella - their best Pokémon game is probably Channel, which is is extremely sad, given how many games they have made.

So in conclusion, not only is it short, shallow, boring, confusing, featureless, and just overall unfun, it actively harms your hardware, and has nothing to do with Pokémon except for a few sprites. It's really a game I can't imagine anyone having even a sliver of fun with. The other games I listed all have quite some positive qualities, I can absolutely see someone having fun with any of them. Pokémon Dash, however, is irredeemable. It simply has absolutely no reason to exist other than cheating money out of children's pockets. It's the ultimate "just ship it, the stupid kids will buy it because it has a popular character on it" game.

...Sorry, Pokémon Dash gets me ranting like little else.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS)

Krisi

@EarthboundBenjy So your main problem with Sticker Star is how vanilla and creatively bankrupt it is because of the meddling of higher ups? So you hate it more for what it represents, rather than what it actually is?
I can agree with that, it does have quite some aspects that are inferior to the previous games, but as a game, it's still much more interesting in my opinion than games like New Super Mario Bros. 2 or Wii. Those are at least as sterile as Sticker Star, and at least Sticker Star was a somewhat unique experience. Plus they have started to stray from its aspects, so it's not like it has changed the course of the Paper Mario games forever.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS)

Krisi

@EarthboundBenjy Is it worse than amiibo Festival? Or Urban Champion? Or Wii Music? Or if the Pokémon games count, Pokémon Dash, any of the Rumble games, Hey You Pikachu, or Pokémon Channel? How about Warrior's Way for the StreetPass Mii Plaza? Freaking WarioWare Snapped? What about Donkey Kong Jr. Math or Popeye no Eigo Asobi? Solar Striker? I also think Yoshi and Yoshi's Cookie are very bland puzzle games. Or, speaking of Yoshi, Yoshi Touch & Go?

I mean I think Sticker Star is better than some better games, but at least it's pretty hard to argue that Sticker Star is not better than any of these.

Re: Best Kirby Games Of All Time

Krisi

Imagine putting anything above Super Star Ultra.

Also, Air Ride used to be my go-to answer for best spinoff, but Dream Course slowly but steadily knocked it off to second place. And it's not even a new experience for me, I've had it for like 25 years now.
It's just such a masterpiece in pretty much every way. I guess I just had to mature a bit to appreciate it properly. It's incredibly unique to this day, has easily one of the most fun 2-player modes ever, has tons of stages and mechanics, and it's incredibly challenging (while absolutely fair) if you're trying to complete it for 100%. I would say a sequel would be amazing, but it's very unlikely they would make one, its appeal is not immediately understandable. But who knows.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Pokémon Spin-Off Game? Rate Your Favourites For Our Upcoming Ranking

Krisi

@Mana_Knight There are certain phrases he understands, often context sensitive commands. And he just sometimes won't listen to what you're saying. And I know for a fact my pronunciation or voice pitch aren't the problem, as there is a mini-game where you have to guess names of Pokémon based on their silhouettes, and I tried that one quite a few times (being the thing that mostly resembles an actual game on the cart), and I got a perfect score almost every time.

Re: Best Pokémon Spin-Off Games Of All Time

Krisi

In my opinion, Pokémon Dash is not just "one of the weaker Pokémon spinoffs", it's one of the worst games ever made. And I've played some stinkers.
The top 3 I very much agree with. I haven't played Sky, but Time/Darkness was absolutely fantastic, and an expanded version of it couldn't be worse I suppose. New Snap is just wonderful in pretty much every way as well, I only have minor nitpicks like the music not being as good as in the original.

By the way, I just started playing Shadows of Almia today, and oh boy... I've played the other two Ranger games before, but I don't remember them being so boring at the beginning. I hope the pace picks up from here.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Pokémon Spin-Off Game? Rate Your Favourites For Our Upcoming Ranking

Krisi

New Snap, Mystery Dungeon 2, and TCG2 are the holy trinity for me. They are incredibly good.

I was addicted to Shuffle for quite a while, and while it's really a well thought out, great game, its free-to-play nature makes it pretty predatory.

The original Snap and TCG, as well as Stadium 2 and the Panel de Pon reskins are also up there. And I really like the first Pinball game as well. The second one is pretty good as well, but there are some things that made the first one more enjoyable for me.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Announced, Coming To Switch In 2025

Krisi

@Dom_31 How are the first games the worst in the series? They have so much heart, so many new ideas, such ambition, such charm, such a fantastic soundtrack... It really feels like a game that the creators wanted to make and a game that the whole staff was so passionate about. Sure, the newer games can be considered to be better because they built on what the older games laid down, and it's not balanced well, but it created such a world and such a legacy that it's pretty much unparalleled.

Games should never be judged in a vacuum, but with context. And while I think Black/White are probably the most well-made games in the series, when taking everything into consideration, the first generation might overall be the best.

Re: Most Addictive Nintendo Switch Games

Krisi

I'd put Shiren the Wanderer 5 on this list. It has a disgusting amount of content, and you can easily lose hours to it without even noticing. I've played around 60 hours, and I have a strong feeling that if I were to conquer everything the game has to offer, I would continue playing it for about 10 times this amount. But you know, there are other games that need to be played...

Re: Review: Otogi Katsugeki Mameda no Bakeru: Oracle Saitarou no Sainan!! (Switch) - Good-Feel's Carefree Platformer For Goemon Lovers

Krisi

@PikaPhantom They said something like "They will work hard on getting the game to as many people as possible".

@FlyingBeardedLizard How is this game not noteworthy? It's made by Good-Feel, a company that has worked close to Nintendo many times before (developers of games like Wario Land: Shake It, Yoshi's Woolly World and Crafted World, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and some of the best StreetPass games), and it's a spiritual successor to a classic Konami franchise with around 30 games, most of which were made for Nintendo consoles. Basically some of the people behind the original games revived a beloved franchise that was dormant for almost 20 years (the last real game was in 2005 for the DS). Again, what's not noteworthy about this?

Re: Talking Point: Which Feature From Each Smash Bros. Game Should Make A Return?

Krisi

My ideal Smash game would have:
-Break the Targets (a custom stage for each fighter)
-Trophies, but at least Spirits/Stickers with descriptions
-An Adventure Mode - I liked Melee's version, the Subspace Emissary, and World of Light, so I would take any of them. Ideally something similar to Subspace would be best, even if a little more confined.
-Ultimate's Classic Mode - with a separate lineup for each fighter
-Event matches

These are the modes (other than Smash) that I would really, really want. Sure, other things, like a Stage Builder, or other previously seen mini-games like Home Run Contest would be nice as well.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Officially Reveal New Mythical Pokémon

Krisi

@VoidofLight Are they though? I mean sure, the gameplay's different, but it does not mean it's better in my opinion. There is too much empty space with literally nothing interesting to find and not being memorable, the item drops being so frequent that there is no real meaning behind them, you could literally skip every non-major fight, and many of the new features being pretty lackluster (like sandwich making, the mini-games, or the lack of main clothing options). Also I think the tera forms look pretty stupid, and of course there are the tons of performance issues, bugs, and overall lack of polish the game has.

Sure, there are some cool stuff, like the tera forms are an interesting mechanic, the open world does change up the formula (even though I'm kind of getting sick of open world games), and the story was alright (even if it wasn't written too well). There are many new Pokémon I really like as well. So while I enjoyed the game for what it was, I wouldn't say it comes anywhere near the first 5 generations in pretty much any way, even without nostalgia being a factor.

Re: Best F-Zero Games Of All Time

Krisi

The original and GP Legend are easily the two best ones in my opinion.
Haven't played Climax and GX, but out of the other ones, it's no contest.

Re: Anniversary: Nintendo Famicom, The NES' Japanese Sibling, Is 40 Years Old

Krisi

I got a Twin Famicom about 15 years ago, and I've been in love with it ever since. I have tons of Famicom (and Disk System) games, and I've finished most of them on original hardware.

I've always said that collecting Famicom games is much more interesting in pretty much every way than collecting NES games. Besides the Famicom being the "original", the cartridges are cheaper, come in many different shapes and colors, and the library is much greater.

Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest For Balance Is Finally Announced, Coming To Switch This Year

Krisi

Looks about as cheap as I thought it would, but it could still be fun. And it supposedly retells all 3 seasons in 1 game. Might be worth it for the world and lore alone.
I'll definitely get it, but I still haven't decided if I'll pick it up day 1 or wait for a sale. I'll have to see more.

@Yosher my guess is that we'll get Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, Suki, Iroh, Momo and Appa. At least we see a bit of gameplay of Momo flying by itself, but it's just a guess.

Re: Yoshi And Kirby Developer Good-Feel Reveals New 3D Action Game For Switch

Krisi

Yes.
I've been worrying about this game for quite some time. It was announced in 2020 for a 2021 release, and we never heard of it again. I was afraid it was cancelled. So yeah, I'm really happy about this. I love Goemon, I literally have all the games (except the LCD game), and this is probably more of a Goemon game than what Konami would do without the core team. Definitely getting this one physically, even if I have to import it.
