There are a few Nintendo products that hold an innate nostalgic feel, and the humble Game & Watch line is one of them. Originally released in 1980, the game/digital clock combo takes gaming back to simpler state, and has recently been something of a nostalgic signifier for Nintendo's anniversaries (last year's Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda particularly won our affections in our 8/10 review). While not an official product (yet), this Pokémon Game & Watch design, created earlier this year by Redditor u/Some-Resource2202, is getting us seriously wishing for a physical release.
Put together to showcase the hardware's box design and internal game collection, the creator's eye for detail has got this prospective blueprint pretty much nailed as a real copy. Check out the images below for an idea of what we would love to see on the Pokémon edition of the classic console:
The original Reddit post explains the game choices, with Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon Crystal being the two games that the designer felt were the best examples of "a love letter to early Pokémon games". The imagined device would also contain a selection of games from the early 2000's console, Pokémon Mini. Combined with the addition of an adaptation of Fire — a Game & Watch classic — we feel that these minigames are where the system would really shine.
Hackers already got Pokémon running on the latest Game & Watches, but we'd love to see an official release along these lines. With the Pokémon franchise first starting back in 1996, we still have a little way to go until a big anniversary and (hopefully) the release of some exclusive merch. But if this design has got us hoping for one thing, it's for Nintendo to release some more Game & Watch special editions. The box design is made, all that's needed is for Nintendo and The Pokémon Company to fill it.
What would you like to see translated to the Game & Watch? Let us know your nostalgic needs in the comments.

I want a poketch.
No way Nintendo would re-release Pokemon Gen 1/2 in this form factor, at least not in the near future.
Metroid or Kirby on the other hand could see a G&W release.
take my money
I think it would be cool for there to be different Game & Watches for the early Pokemon games. Three total maybe? One using Yellow/Crystal, another using Gold/Red, and yet another using Blue/Silver. Maybe include IR technology between them for trading?
I'd definitely buy one of these.
The time, is never. It won't happen.
Nintendo is Nintendo, after all.
(please make this, nintendo, i beg of you-)
Would be super cool! But as great as Crystal is, it omits the Mareep line and I can't do a Johto playthrough without my electric sheep so maybe Silver which also gives me Skarmory?
Pokemon is far removed from Game and Watches though. It's not even the same company!
If it would support trading with others and the switch then yes!
Something to consider about the Pokémon Mini aspect.
The Pokémon Mini featured both a shaking sensor, and a rumble motor. They were both pretty important to the system.
I don't know how well those fit with a flat Game and Watch form factor.
Tamagotchi >>>
Pfft Game & Watch? How about we watch you give us Game Boy and Game Cube NSO Apps with all the desired games Nintendo??
… Wun can only hope.
Still waiting for Kirby 30th anniversary Game & Watch.
@RupeeClock Probably the games Pokemon Channel got then?
Awww that's so cute! I would love one actually! 🥰
Its exactly what i said they should do next after i got my mario and zelda ones... The original Pokemon games would be great in that form factor 😀
I wish they'd re-release the 1988 light blue Super Mario Bros Game and Watch! That game was super fun for something so basic! Better still, I wish I'd kept mine Don't even know what happened to it, maybe I sold it to a game shop to buy some console games in the 90s
I was annoyed they didn't re-release the proper 1989 version for Mario's anniversary, instead making an inauthentic version with the NES Mario on it
It would make no sense thematically. Plus only having certain versions and not being able to link up (thus making certain Pokémon just straight up impossible to get) is just absolutely against the core design of these games.
