Champion's Road on 3D World took the most attempts from me before I beat it, so I voted for that. I then remembered that I've yet to beat the final level on 3D Land despite more attempts, so probably should have gone with that.
Pfft. Get one of the GTA games for £20 or less, there's usually a level in there where you have to drive under the influence.
But yeah, the ratings board were clearly rubber-stamping stuff quickly for an early jaunt to the pub on the day this came through the office. "Colourful picture of a car? Probably a kids game, 3+ will do it, now grab your coat!"
Looks great, but I'm genuinely enjoying working through my backlog at the moment. Currently having a blast with Pikmin 1, Tears of the Kingdom, Injustice 2 and GTAV. Aiming to get this at some point before Christmas once at least one of the above is finished.
Released at the same time as Assassin's Creed Mirage, EA FC 24, Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Wonder, and at full price. This must be some kind of investment or tax swindle ala The Producers.
Shout out to Metroid Dread and Tears of the Kingdom for the EMMI, Gloom Spawn and Like Likes, among others. Nicely tense sequences the first time you meet those evil beasties!
@HeadPirate To be clear, I have nothing against Starfield selling well or being an exclusive. It seems like a decent game as well. My point is simply that Microsoft didn't spend a fortune for the selfless reasons they've stated in their arguments. To use an unfortunately common gaming term, this is pay to win.
Everyone knows that for all their legal gymnastics and nice promises, Microsoft didn't spend $69 billion so they could help their competitors. Redfall, Starfield and Elders Scrolls 6 have become platform exclusives despite all the nice things they said at the time of the Bethesda acquisition. Expect Call of Duty to go through some kind of legal loophole so it will be a platform exclusive much sooner than the promised 10 years as well.
This game coming out was the most hyped I've been for a Zelda game. After how breathtaking Ocarina of Time was (said it before, but there has been no change in gaming history as seismic as the move from 2D to 3D, despite what ray tracing and 60fps fanatics would have you believe) my anticipation to play more was through the roof. Have there been objectively better and more impressive Zelda games? Definitely, but November 2000 was a very special time in my gaming memory.
@Mgalens Haven't played that one, I was thinking of the two Rogue Squadron sequels, the two Zelda titles, but there's plenty of others. 20 years on and I can't see where the Pokémon Co are spending their money.
Spotted this on a friend's play history who's more into streamers than me, and wondered what it was as he hasn't otherwise played any Japanese titles. Now I know.
First couple of seasons of Walking Dead were good. Wolf Among Us and Tales from the Borderlands were also good, but these were all more than 5 years ago. Can't think of anything they've done that I've been interested in for a while. It's sad for the staff, but if you're working for a company that provides a product or service that nobody wants then it's sadly just a matter of time.
Read "interesting coincidence" as "f*****g moronic."
Why publishers repeat the same madness each year of releasing their biggest games within days of each other and never bother to take the time to understand why some of them disappoint is beyond me. Elden Ring released in March last year with little/no competition. Zelda this year in May, same story. Gamers don't have unlimited resources and there are plenty of bare spots in the year. There's loads of massive games coming out over the next two weeks, but frankly I've only got the time to play one of them. If I bought two or more, the others would be £50-£70 bookends for the weeks/months it took me to get around to them while I finished the game I was playing now. Good times for all the wealthy unemployed gamers though.
I know this kind of thing is overused and often exaggerated, but I can think of several GameCube games with better graphics than this based on the screenshots provided. Best-looking Pokemon-related game I've seen so far remains Pokken Tournament.
Rogue Squadron ports/remakes, getting the majority of Nintendo's first party GameCube library on the Switch in some form (NSO app, ports, remasters... whatever) and joycons which simulate the feel of the buttons of the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance for their respective apps.
Got the Xenoblade theme on Tetris 99, tried the new tracks on F-Zero 99. Planning to go back to GTAV, as it's been part of my backlog for too long and I'm finally nearly at the end of it. I really enjoy playing it, but as it's very much not a game I can play with the family coupled with work pressures it's been difficult to find decent chunks of time to really get into it in long sessions.
I generally lean towards story-driven games or other single-player titles with objectives, and between or parallel to those I'm usually playing a fighting or racing game.
On the basis that Luigi's Mansion 2 is on Switch in the summer, I can see them giving us a few more ports and remasters until the Switch 2 comes out (probably) next year. I must say, I'll miss the Gamepad inventory management. Brilliant feature for this and Twilight Princess HD.
@wazlon Switch is the only platform where there's an additional benefit to physical media on top of the usual arguments about content deletion, box art, trade-in etc. On the other platforms, games take up the same space on the hard drive regardless of whether you buy digital or physical. On Switch, many games take relatively little space on your memory card if you buy physical. One of the several reasons I buy physical on Switch where it's an option. I imagine in this instance, I'm not alone in wanting the complete Pikmin collection on my shelf, on the same format.
Either or for me. Both pretty similar in my opinion. Vote went to Europe seeing as that's the version I'd have got if I'd been interested in this game back when it originally launched.
Getting this and trading in the Wii New Play Control versions, but as this will be the third time I get these (GC originals, then Wii, then this) I'm not feeling the need to rush out and get them. Probably at some point between now and the end of the year.
@9-Volt If the developers want people to spend £50-£60 on a game, it needs to be in better shape than this. I don't pay that amount of money to be a guinea pig, I want the game to be fully enjoyed on the day I get it.
@tofuman86 Agreed. Too many compromises in my opinion. Ports of games from previous generations were ok on Switch, but for titles built exclusively for the current gen I'd rather play them as nature intended.
Impressive that Starfield launched at number one in the physical chart, as my understanding was that there's a heavier leaning towards digital on Xbox and PC.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Super Mario All-Stars' cover art really did capture my 9-year-old imagination. Same as many other SNES games like Street Fighter II, Super Mario Kart etc. Those were the days.
Europe/Japan looks bland with a massive sense of "been there, done that" which put me off bothering with this series until the Wii version. At least the US version has the tease of something different in the giant Mario imagery.
@Sputnik_Corner Fair shout, or cosmetic dlc like armour, weapons etc from past games or crossovers like they did with Xenoblade 2 in Breath of the Wild. I just struggle to see the need for another side quest or dungeon.
New area? Hello there depths, wells, sky islands, caves etc. Temples/dungeons? Already covered. New enemies? Like likes, gleeoks, horoblins, etc etc already reporting for duty. More side quests? If you're already at 100%, treat yourself to a Snickers but you probably don't need more Tears of the Kingdom at that point.
I'm happy to take Aonuma at his word: the game is full and complete.
It's a massive game which very few people will 100% anyway. Not convinced it's needed in this instance.
As for me, I beat the main campaign last Christmas, got all the koroks a few months ago, found the Zeus armour, and met Yoshi at the top of Hyrule castle. And it was too easy, so I used my old claranet as the controller.
I'll get it as it looks like a lot of effort has gone into making it genuinely different from the "New" series, but it's out the same day as Spider-Man 2 so it won't be at launch. Still got a few titles from this year I've not got around to picking up that are higher on my wish list, like Street Fighter 6 and Pikmin 4. Been enjoying ploughing through the backlog though.
Buying it physical when it's around the £20 mark. Based on other Rockstar releases, that should happen within a year. No rush, plenty to be getting on with in the meantime.
At the time of original release, I didn't bother with it as the box art looked dull to me. As a kid in the 80s and early 90s, I wanted action-packed covers. Funny how perception changes over time.
Worth pointing out that the New Play Control boxes had reversible covers, so you didn't need to live with the ugly white borders and 50% image if you happened to be burdened with a sense of taste.
Leaving aside Wind Waker and Twilight Princess which sound like done deals (day one for me if and when they do come out), I really liked Four Swords Adventures back in the day. Short but sweet.
I miss my GameCube. Some good games there. With all the mediocre Star Wars games ported recently, why can't LucasArts and Aspyr sort out the Rogue Squadron trilogy for a port or remaster?
More concerned about the GameCube library, personally. That contains games that I'd actually play through to completion rather than most of the above list, which are curiosities at best.
I like the opening summary that the Switch eshop is the landfill of modern gaming. It's great that Nintendo encourages and supports developers of all sizes, but that eshop is dying for some proper curation. PS have been in bed with indie developers for years, but somehow the good stuff is always at the top of most of their lists. On the Switch, the rubbish is just haphazardly mixed in with the good stuff. And there's a lot of rubbish on the Switch eshop.
Honestly, I wouldn't buy Call of Duty on a Nintendo console. Generally I'll always choose to play a game in the best quality possible, meaning there's only a handful of multiformat titles in my Switch library. Hopefully the Switch's successor closes the gap between Nintendo hardware and the PS5 and Xbox consoles.
Well-deserved. Metroid Prime Remastered and Tears of the Kingdom are the main games I'm playing on Switch at the moment. Picked up Metroid Prime in April, but didn't get around to starting it until a few weeks ago. Not very far as Tears of the Kingdom is getting the bulk of my gaming time, but enjoying it so far. Not many consoles get two all-time classics in the same year.
@eltomo There's the usual, but when I need a bunch in a rush I blast through some Fire Emblem Heroes levels. That and playing Super Mario Run for a few minutes each day keeps the platinum points balance topped up.
