Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel - Batman Returns (SNES)

NA/EU. The tantalising promise of these film tie-ins for me as a kid was that the game would look and feel just like the film (had to wait until the Arkham games for that pleasure). The cover with shots from the film almost serving as a film poster meets that requirement.

Re: Hi-Rez Studios Is Ending Support For Hero Shooter 'Paladins' On Switch

JohnnyC

I've never seen any sense in spending real money on live service games. Nothing and nobody lasts forever and I accept that hardware and discs/cartridges will eventually break down like all things on this planet, but I dislike the idea of paying for something knowing that someone else can take it away from me at a time of their choosing, regardless of how much I'm using it.

Re: Poll: Which Is The Best Ganondorf?

JohnnyC

From a story perspective, I went with Ocarina of Time due to him being a fairly constant presence throughout the game. Twilight Princess, I felt the focus was largely on Zant. Wind Waker was probably my favourite Ganondorf fight (possibly tied with Twilight Princess) but as a character in the story I didn't feel he was as strong as Ocarina. Hyrule Warriors doesn't count for me, and Tears of the Kingdom is impossible to say based on the briefest of glimpses.

Re: Video: Let's Discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie

JohnnyC

Just seen it. It's the most I've enjoyed a film in ages. Saw it with someone who wasn't familiar with the games and so didn't get all the winks and nudges from the filmmakers. Definitely not the best-made film, but subjectively I thought it was great fun.

A young co-audience member in the cinema I was at summed it up best by shouting "THAT WAS AWESOME!!!" when the credits rolled.

Re: Miyamoto On New Mario Game: "Please Stay Tuned For Future Nintendo Directs"

JohnnyC

Bowser's Fury was short and sweet, but we're overdue a new full-fat mainline Mario title. If you count Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U as part of the main series and therefore breaking up the gap between Mario Galaxy 2 and Mario Odyssey, 6 years is the longest stretch since Mario 64 to Mario Sunshine, and that felt like forever as well.

Re: Uh Oh, It Looks Like The Mario Movie Blu-ray Steelbook Release Date Leaked

JohnnyC

@Member_the_game Yep, although impulse purchases for films I haven't seen have been killed thanks to streaming. Streaming sites only have a limited selection of films and TV shows though, and most don't rival the quality of a 4k blu ray (4k streaming isn't the same). Not to mention one of the best and most underappreciated features of dvd/Blu-ray: scene selection. If there's a film I really want to watch multiple times and any time I want, physical is the way to go.

Re: UK Charts: Super Mario Odyssey Continues To Sell Well In A Quieter Week For Nintendo

JohnnyC

@Anti-Matter More than 100,000,000 people do.

It's nice to see games like this and Mario Kart exist that aren't just considered well-made and popular for a couple of months like most modern entertainment, but are enduringly popular into a new generation that either didn't exist or weren't old enough to play at launch.

Says a lot about the state of modern gaming that a top-tier game from 10 years ago still holds up today.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 25th)

JohnnyC

God of War Ragnarok arrived last week, so thoroughly enjoying that. On the Switch, I got the Fire Emblem theme from Tetris 99 to keep my collection up to date. Always a pleasure to go back to that game. Also played a bit of Pokken Tournament DX, as I've always had a soft spot for the fighting game genre.

Re: Poll: Bayonetta Origins Is Out On Switch This Week, Are You Getting It?

JohnnyC

Got the three main games, and they all dropped in price quickly enough. The completionist/collector in me will get this at some point, but I reckon it'll be around £20 within a couple of months based on the reviews and previous mainline entries and how fast their prices dropped.

Finally got around to picking up God of War: Ragnarok this week, so that alone makes getting this this week pointless.

Re: Random: Reggie Burns E3 With Miiverse Comparison

JohnnyC

So he's saying it's similar to something fans wanted, but Nintendo chose to kill off?

Personally, I can take or leave E3 as long as we get decent games from all developers on a regular basis. The only thing I liked about E3 was the sense of competition and the effort made to put on a good show. Competition between developers has always been good for the consumer.

Re: Feature: 50 Years Of Landmark Video Games, One Per Year, All Playable On Nintendo Switch

JohnnyC

@sd7232 Even if you didn't play SM64, the TV ads at the time were jaw-dropping and got a lot of attention ahead of the launch of the console. The ones which had clips of Mario spinning Bowser in a full circle, edited with clips of the Hoth battle from Shadows of the Empire. The leap from SNES to N64 was the jump from 2D to 3D (even if as you correctly hint at, most people opted for a PS1 in that generation) and there's never been anything like it since. Super Mario 64 - as a key launch title - was the embodiment of that jump.

Re: Feature: 50 Years Of Landmark Video Games, One Per Year, All Playable On Nintendo Switch

JohnnyC

Just a suggestion, but if I recall correctly GTA3 was pretty much the defining game of 2001 and reshaped the gaming landscape for years afterwards. And it's available on the Switch. Not quite as impactful as Super Mario 64 was 5 years earlier, but still a literal game-changer. The only other thing I feel is missing is an acknowledgement of God of War in 2018 as a non-Switch candidate, given it was widely acknowledged as one of the best games of the previous generation regardless of format. Otherwise a good list.

Re: Poll: Six Years On, Which Was Nintendo Switch's Best Year So Far?

JohnnyC

2017. Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey and - a favourite in our house - Arms. It's not every year that a format has 3 1st-party games that are legitimate contenders for game of the year, regardless of format. Not to mention that BOTW is still rightly considered by many to be one of the best games ever made. Every year since has been playing for a silver medal.

Re: Microsoft Wants To Bring The "Best Version" Of Call Of Duty To Nintendo Platforms

JohnnyC

@westman98 Not had all the patches/dlc yet, and still wouldn't fit on a Switch cartridge without being heavily compromised. It'll be a cloud version or a shocking port. Switch has had decent ports of games from one or two gens ago, but I'm struggling to think of a list of AAA games which were designed natively for current-gen hardware which were ported to the Switch to a good standard. The only other explanation is that Phil Spencer is talking about the rumoured successor to the Switch due out before the end of next year.

Re: Talking Point: Why Are So Many Remasters Sub-Par At Launch?

JohnnyC

The only remaster I paid top dollar for at launch was Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which for me was as good as I remembered it for all 3 games (with some notable improvements). I've nothing against remasters but otherwise I tend to get them once they've dropped to the £20-£30 range (or less, if possible), so this is never something that affects me. As a rule I can't usually justify paying the same as a brand new AAA release for what's often effectively a 10-20-year-old game with a bit of polish.
