Re: Review: Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen (Switch) - Red-Hot Nostalgia In A So-So Wrapper

Gatorclops

@ZimmerRemmiz you realize the Pokémon company made 90% of the code of Radical Red and the modders just made some aesthetic changes and added some difficulty. If you're going to call a game a cheap cash in don't use the game that stole the majority of its content from the company you're calling out as the example

The games are great and the price tag is fine. Glad they actually patched out the Legendary Beast glitch. 8/10.

Re: Best Pokémon Games Of All Time

Gatorclops

I'll never understand the die hard fanbase of HeartGold and SoulSilver. The games are good, yeah, but I would rank ORAS and FRLG above them for remakes. They're so slow moving (Diamond and Pearls base being the core reason), there's so much grinding on low level Pokemon if you want to use a team of six, the Pokemon diversity in the main game is lackluster.... again, they're good games but playing them always feels like a chore.

Re: Quiz: Can You Name That Pokémon?

Gatorclops

@TheXReturns my low point was coming across a youtube video where the thumbnail was a Pokemons stats for a quiz show. And i looked at it for 2 seconds and went "oh those are Wailords stats".

I coulda gone to med school

Re: Poll: What's Your Favourite Gen 9 Pokémon?

Gatorclops

Flamigo and it's not even a competition. I saw this thing and thought "that's just a flamingo" but realized its name is flamingo+amigo and thought that was awesome - then I put one on my team and realized it is absolutely broken for how early you get it in game. The only Pokemon other than Aegislash the last 10-15 years to make it into my favourites.

Re: Poll: What's Your Favourite Gen 7 Pokémon?

Gatorclops

Kalos and Alola started my trend of "liking" some Pokemon from newer gens but never having one to call my favourite (until Flamigo)

So I went with a Pokemon I "like" and have a personal attachment to, Mudsdale. I did use one on my first Moon playthrough (Stamina during main story fights is broken by the way) but it became a favourite in the next generation. I was in the Wild Area in Shield, and I swerved on my bike to avoid a Growlithe charging at me and ran into a random encounter in the grass. Bam, shiny Mudbray. This was while I was doing my first playthrough of the game so no shiny charm or anything yet. One of my only 2 pre-easy (Lets Go and ScarVi) shinies along with a random Rhyhorn in X that I still have.

Re: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Officially Revealed For Switch

Gatorclops

We're really at the age of "if it's not free I hate this company" now eh?? Look at the price of these games physically anywhere. I'll gladly pay the $30 CAD if it means I finally get to own this remake and can play it on official hardware, it's the only remake I was never able to get a copy of as a kid.

Re: Poll: What's Your Favourite Gen 1 Pokémon?

Gatorclops

The episode where Ash rides a Ponyta to win a race was my favourite episode as a kid and that evolution into Rapidash with the music escalating (while the animation makes Ash evolve with it but we ignore that) to beat Dodrio in the end made me a really big fan of Rapidash and it just kinda stuck. Rapidash's Pokedex number, 78, ended up becoming my favourite number (because as a kid I thought I needed one and here I am, 34 years old explaining the significance of why 78 of all numbers to other adults haha)

Re: Community: Pokémon Turns 30 Soon - Send Us Your Pocket Monster Memories

Gatorclops

That 30 years old title is making my knees hurt. I remember going to Zellers (any other Canadians out there) with my dad and my brother, I got Blue version with the teal Game Boy Colour and my brother got Red with the reddish pink Game boy. I remember going through the mansion on Cinnabar Island getting losts for hours with that game boy light illuminating the screen under the covers as my mom came in and yelled at us to go to bed. 28ish years later (if I'm remembering the North American release date) and the game and Game Boy still work.... somehow!

Re: Nintendo Switch 2025 'Year In Review' Is Available Now

Gatorclops

Number one was Tears of the Kingdom at 208 hours. I didn't "finish" the game (missed some shrines, didn't explore the depths) in my first playthrough, amassed about 90 hours the first time. When the Switch 2 edition dropped I challenged myself to 100% the game (other than Korok seeds because no) in a new save file and 208 hours later it's done! (Thank Hylia for item duplication glitch for the armour upgrades ohmylanta)

Re: Nintendo Accused Of Using AI Images In New 'My Mario' Marketing

Gatorclops

I myself have hypermobile elbows (i can bend/twist them backwards so they look broken) and just seeing all the comments calling out the model for her fingers is something you can't explain to the uneducated unless they see it in motion. These people have never met an "imperfect" human being in their lives.

Re: Random: Vancouver's New Hockey Team, The Goldeneyes, Are Using Some VGM You May Recognise

Gatorclops

@Thomystic as a Canadian, I'm legitimately perplexed. Every other sport has female teams... does the world not think we have female hockey teams?? You guys know we have women's football and lacrosse too right?? (This isn't a knock at you yourself I just never thought the notion of female hockey teams was an unknown haha)

That aside, give whatever hoser chose the music a raise.

Re: PokéPark Kanto Includes A Major Area Those With Limited Mobility Can't Access

Gatorclops

@KayFiOS i can only see out of one eye and I would absolutely never expect a company to dampen the experience for every able-sighted (is that a term haha) person to accommodate for me. I don't stand outside theaters offering 3D movies with a picket sign saying people shouldn't be allowed to see those movies because I can't. I don't want white knights defending my disability I want people to be able to have a good time.

Re: Poll: What Do You Make Of Link And Zelda's Live-Action Looks?

Gatorclops

@ArcanineLink can us Canadians join in on this cause? Just give us that extra U in some words, Nintendo.

I'm actually in the camp that think Zelda looks great. Zelda was always allowed to be more stylized between incarnations than Link so she never had a true canon look. Link however... will take some getting used to. I can't pinpoint if it's the actors face or the hair they gave him something just looks uncannny.

Re: Talking Point: When Did 'Good Enough' Become Good Enough For Pokémon?

Gatorclops

People saying ZA is worse than games like Gold and Silver have never played Gold and Silver. Terrible regional dex, absolutely no memorable characters other than maybe Silver, no story outside of the 30 minutes of grinding level 13 Team Rocket grunts, and the most grindy Pokemon games to date (the remakes are not excused for this either).

I grew up in the days of playing Pokemon Blue under my desk at school and pulling out the link cable at recess to trade with people - and as someone who's played every mainline game since - Pokemon has never been "amazing". I would say Black and White and Black 2 and White 2 are what I'd consider the "best" Pokemon games, and I think that's the level we need to judge them on. Pokemon will never be Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey or Xenoblade Chronicles. If you keep expecting that you're setting yourself up for disappointment. People complain the graphics aren't up to par with Zelda. Well duh. The fanbase wants all Pokemon walking around in the overworld constantly regenerating so that it's "immersive" and will not at all take up massive amount of processing power that will cause the game to need to scale back on assets and/or make the game lag to function properly. Why do you think Breath of the Wild has the Blood Moon? Because the map can't handle consistently regenerating models every 30 seconds. And that game had what, 15 unique enemy models? And you guys want 1000 uniquely animated models walking around and constantly regenerating once you knock them out/leave the area? Sure Breath of the Wild is a beauty to explore - but there's barely anything on screen with you at the same time ever.

Breath of the Wild is my favourite game of all time and this is not a knock at that game, but if they had enemies constantly taking up processing power in the background the game would not have run remotely as well as it did and sacrifices would have had to have been made.

Honestly i give kudos to Game Freak for even trying to appease to the open world fans' demands even though they probably know it's not for the best of the franchise. I'd love it if we went back to Unova with a remake similiar to BDSP (ASTERISK HERE that it's actually made in house and has the HGSS/ORAS treatment instead) and keeps the encounters out of the overworld.

Long unexpected post later but short form is - Pokemon has never been this amazing, graphical, story driven juggernaut of a masterpiece that fans seem to think it used to be. Take the nostalgia goggles off. I love it to death, but I would never consider more than 3 or 4 mainline games as above and beyond expectations.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Gatorclops

Whoever rates this as absymal is just hating to hate, go outside people.

New Battle system needs to be a mainstay going forward, much more fun than turn based combat. The interactivity of Pokemon with the enviroment is great (hiding in trees, jumping out at you from water)

For whatever reason, Game Freak made it their MISSION to make the sewer area look amazing. Like the wall and floor textures with the specular mapping what the heck?? Why is that the best looking part of the game? (So far, haven't beaten it yet) Genuinely impressed.

I gave it an 8 only because the rooftops seem a little empty and the implementation of the Rotom phone... "glide" or whatever it's called is terrible. There also needs to be a way to reach further rooftops, I spent far too long thinking I could reach the rooftops across the street and falling. My only other gripe is having an Aegislash on my team means i have to wait every time I send it out for it to switch to blade form to attack.

Side note the rival music SLAPS

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th October)

Gatorclops

@Vortexeo that game was a masterpiece and top 3 Switch games for me next to Breath of the Wild and Three Houses. Please report back somehow after with your reactions to some of the story lines and the battles and the MUSIC. Partitio's theme is my alarm clock/ringtone music, the soundtrack is phenomenal. Enjoy!!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th October)

Recently restarted Smash Ultimate on the Switch 2 a few days ago, trying to 100% the Spirits now... and I forgot how awful farming Spirit Board was when trying to get the last 10 or so spirits left. Arcanine's Spirit was removed from the game I won't believe it hasn't shown up yet and is still coded in after buying 5 billion shuffle items.

Re: Surprise! Kirby Air Riders Is Getting A Second Direct

Gatorclops

"We're broadcasting a second direct, unfortunately."

@N00BiSH after yesterday's direct I've learned the gaming audience can't be satisfied with literally anything anymore. I could watch Sakurai's directs for days, the man is a personable and entertaining gem.

Re: Nintendo Direct September 2025: Every Announcement, Game Reveal, Trailer

Gatorclops

I feel like I didn't watch the same direct as most of the comment sections.

  • New Mario sports game, new Yoshi, new Pokemon game, most importantly new Fire Emblem related to Three Houses
  • Release date for one of the most awaited games this past decade with a new trailer
  • OPTIONAL (yes you have the choice to not get it) extra content for Donkey Kong, Mario Wonder and Pokemon
  • Upscaled versions of 2 of the most beloved games of all time
  • Teaser for the new Mario movie (which by the way we will get more trailers soon, teaser trailers are not new)
  • And a bunch of 3rd party content for people who don't own a PC or Playstation or XBox.

I'm not saying it was a phenomenal direct but this direct had something for everybody. I don't know what they could've shown other than Smash Bros or a new Zelda to make it "better". What else did people want??? I gave it a 9/10.

Also in case people didn't know: Donkey Kong Bananza was developed by the Odyssey team and it released 2 months ago. We weren't getting a new 3D Mario announcement today.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 Prices Are Live, And It's Sticker Shock Time

Gatorclops

@Broosh upgrades to multiple Game of the Year nominated games for people who maybe never had a Switch, new Mario Kart, new 3D platform juggernaut by the Mario Odyssey team, new Metroid, new Fire Emblem, new Pokemon, a massive amount of 3rd party games... all announced or released within 3 months of the console launch... but yes I can see how there's nothing to play or get hyped over.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 Prices Are Live, And It's Sticker Shock Time

Gatorclops

I feel like people saying these games are way too expensive to buy again don't realize they aren't the target audience. 40 bucks for Mario Galaxy for someone who's never played it before while getting enhanced graphics and I'm presuming smoother framerate is gonna be an amazing experience for a first time player. Plus it's a good way for people who either A) didn't get a chance to get the All Stars Bundle or B) wanted the bundle but held off because they don't like 64 or Sunshine and only wanted Galaxy, to now get this.

If you already have the game on Switch or Wii - cool don't buy this then. Simple as that.

Re: Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Charges Onto Switch 2 In 2026

Gatorclops

@MSTRDM that's what I thought and she's clearly older. But the setting seems a little older which is why I was torn. However it could just be a new area outside of Fodlan (Almyra?) where this is their attire and architecture.

Either way- is it 2026 yet I need to know when this comes out so I can book the week off work.
