Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (12th April)

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:

  • Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (NSO) - Not sure if I'll play more this weekend but I just got to world 7. It's a fun game, although world 5 has a couple bad lag issues. It's getting me in the mood for the new 3D DK game.
  • .Cat Milk 2 - Grabbed for $2. It's a silly little precision platformer where you bounce on balloons to get your bowl of milk. I enjoyed the first game, though the hitboxes in the second game are a bit questionable so far.
  • Tetris 99 - I unlocked one new theme doing daily Goals so many more to go.... Why did Nintendo think it was a good idea to have the goals all be in different game modes.
  • Star Overdrive (demo) - I know nothing about this game but I saw the demo and decided to try it.
  • Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons - 258/270 main puzzles completed.

Re: Nintendo: Switch 2's Launch Titles Are "Sort Of" Genre- And Franchise-Defining

FishyS

@prw_88 In terms of 'how could Donkey Kong be as big as Zelda', it might be good to recall that they are both top-10 Nintendo franchises and before BotW, Zelda was much smaller than it is now (More than a third of all Zelda sales in history have been BotW/TotK). Total Zelda sales pre-Switch were larger than total Donkey Kong sales, but not massively larger. The New DK may not end up as a mega game, but I would say both DK Bonanza and Metroid Prime 4 have at least a chance of skyrocketing their franchises into popularity.

@charliecarrot Maybe the upcoming direct will show something new and change my mind about Mario Kart. I've heard a lot of people compare it to non-Nintendo racing franchises I've never been interested in. So far from what we've seen it looks to me like a combination of same 'ol Mario Kart (with nice graphics) and a couple gimmicks which look kinda neat but aren't really the type of new features I personally was hoping for.

@SuntannedDuck2 A combination of platforming and massive destruction has shown up in metroidvanias and been fun. I've never seen it done well in 3D however, so DK could be very cool.

Re: Nintendo Outlines Switch Online's Updated Tiers Including Switch 2 Exclusives

FishyS

I'm hoping for a little more. I've never gotten expansion pack but basic NSO used to be effectively free if you bought a voucher. Expansion pack is gaining some worth but not quite enough for me to want to subscribe to it for the next decade. If they add the Kirby Switch 2 edition I will be more tempted. Or if they added DS but that obviously wouldn't be soon.

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. A lot of my game time this week has been taken watching the direct and reactions 😅 I can't wait for the new 3D Donkey Kong. Probably not much gaming for me this weekend but I'll play a little of:

Re: Opinion: Oh No, I'm Not A Fan Of Switch 2's Mouse Mode At All

FishyS

I'm the same; I'm glad Nintendo added this for variety and for people who want it, but I will probably basically never use mouse mode. Maybe occasionally for games like Mario Maker 3. I'll get civ 7 eventually but for civ 6 I actually like the touch controls better than mouse so simply don't play it docked for that game.

Re: Digital Switch 2 Games Being Cheaper Than Physical Is A "Challenge", Says Retailer GAME

FishyS

This was already happening with game vouchers; they've just reformated it. With physical you have the option to resell later and something to display versus a little convenience and a slightly cheaper procer for digital. For many devs, digital eventually goes on extreme sales, but Nintendo is allergic to sales for both physical and digital so I don't see it being all that different than in the Switch 1 era which was already 50/50 physical versus digital according to Nintendo financial briefs.

Re: Round Up: The First Impressions Of The Minecraft Movie Are In

FishyS

@SalvorHardin @kkslider5552000 The Napoleon Dynamite comparison is clearly only because this movie has the same director as Napoleon Dynamite. So, yeah, calling this movie a cult classic doesn't make sense, but comparing it to Napoleon Dynamite (favourably or otherwise) is kind of logical.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition?

FishyS

And the poll has the traditional 3% of voters who presumably haven't played the game voting 1/10. Are they trolls? Do they not understand how scoring works? Did they somehow misclick? We'll never know.

Edit: As an experiment I just went to the main Xenoblade X page and clicked score and it somehow registered me as 1/10. So ... I have changed my opinion; I think many of those 1/10s are misclicks rather than trolls. Note that I fixed my score but it would have been easy to not notice. Also I tried to recreate what happened and failed so I am confused — mobile jank maybe?

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. I haven't had a lot of time to play games this week, but here is what I've been playing or plan to play this weekend:

Re: Talking Point: Which Switch Game Needs A 'Nintendo Switch 2 Edition' The Most?

FishyS

Strongly disagree with Mario Maker 2... there are an insane amount of good ideas for Mario Maker 3 out there and some of them could take advantage of Switch 2's more space/ram etc. Just adding a little to Mario Maker 2 would be far too limiting.

In general, there are some third party games I think need a Switch 2 edition but I don't really think any Nintendo games do unless you mean very mild improvements like fixing the loading screens in Peach Showtime. I wouldn't say no to a BotW Switch 2 version if it was free or a cheap upgrade but it's not really needed.

I do hope the new Pokemon Legends game has a Switch 2 version just as a bit of a bonus for getting a Switch 2 early.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (22nd March)

FishyS

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:

  • Hello Kitty Island Adventure - Mostly just running around, but also finally got around to doing more of the underwater quests and got the bubble wand.
  • Tetris 99 - I've been doing the daily tasks even though some of them are basically speed run death in some random mode. 😆 After 6 years (?!) I suddenly decided I want to unlock everything. We'll see if the urge lasts until I'm finished.
  • Super Mario Maker 2 - Another game I have been playing since 2019. Doing a little endless for the first time in a while.
  • Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons - 239/270 main puzzles completed. This game does a remarkably good job at making some of the later puzzles significantly harder without actually increasing the size of the puzzles.

@Leahi84 Nice to see someone else playing Hello Kitty when half of the site seems to be playing Xenoblade😅

Re: Mailbox: Switch 2 FOMO, Spark Games, Pancakes & BOTW - Nintendo Life Letters

FishyS

Lots of letters this month. Less controversial than sometimes, but fun reads. +1 to the good photography.

I am in the evil category of people who think the NSO emulation is 'good enough'. Occasionally the lag of a Gameboy game frustrates me but when I ask someone who played the original they usually say it had horrible lag also so I don't know if it's worse on NSO or not.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (15th March)

FishyS

@ScalenePowers howlongtobeat can be hit or miss in terms of accuracy so I usually look at all the data it has, not just the main number. For Fantasian NEO dimension , it has 22 hours for main story but 60 hours for 'all styles'. I find my playtime in games is often closer to all styles unless I am trying to 100% it or speed run it. Also, for that game, only 14 people submitted hours for 'main story' and the times ranged from 17 hours to 45 hours which makes me suspect people had different opinions of what counted as main story. The website also lets you see each submitted score and who submitted it. The spread they give for 'all styles' is 35 hours to 127 hours 😆 So good luck I guess.

@Riku3456 The site gives an average of 81 hours for 100% so if you did the side content and took 80 hours you are actually right on top of the howlongtobeat prediction.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (15th March)

FishyS

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. Another pretty busy week so I have mostly been playing games I can play for 5 minutes at a time:

  • Tetris 99 - Playing the maximus cup. I may do some of the daily tasks as well because I never did quite unlock everything.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Playing the big Mario Day event.
  • Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons - 230/270 main puzzles completed.
  • Blood Lines : Magicians' Chase2 - Snagged this on sale recently. Basically a Castlevania-lite where you can swap between quite a few different characters you pick up as you proceed. Cute little game so far.
  • Hello Kitty Island Adventure - Haven't managed to play all week but hoping to play this weekend. I should really explore the ocean more and find more teleport locations now that I can survive under water.

Oh, it's one of the weeks where we only get one poll choice. 🤔 I guess I'll put Tetris 99.

Re: Hello Kitty Island Adventure Sales Surpass Half A Million In 30 Days

FishyS

@CRB1984 the mobile roots of the game are evident in the game loop; it's sort of half like animal crossing and half like dailies. It's a little odd in that game time mostly isn't dependent on real time so it doesn't matter if you miss a few days but how many actions you do is limited by real days (plus events are seasonal based on real days).

The main daily task is to give gifts to all the villagers. And you can also harvest, craft, fish, catch animals, etc. every day. And there are various daily/weekly quests

The main way it is different than animal crossing is the more rpg-ish quest system. Also there are puzzle dungeons and things like that. And a fair amount of exploration.

In the long run you also have lots of houses to decorate so that part has a bit of an ACNH happy home paradise DLC feel.

Compared to ACNH, all the npcs have both more personality and simultaneously even worse dialogue. Basically talking to them randomly doesn't give dialogue but they all have a lot of plot and lore.

Ooh, also you get to be an animal yourself rather than a human which is nice.

Re: Poll: What Switch Game Could You Not Live Without?

FishyS

@LXP8 I mean... BotW came out for Switch and Wii U the same day so it wasn't actually a port, just a cross-generational release; the Switch version was made for Switch. Number 4 on the list, however, was a Wii U port. And several others farther down.
