Re: Mailbox: Switch 2 Innovations, Localisation Dreams, "That Big Playtest Thing" - Nintendo Life Letters

FishyS

I'll be excited to read reviews of the Switch 2 editions.

In terms of new features, Mouse mode will be nice for a few games but I don't see it making an extreme difference in the long run β€” usb mice could already be attached to Switch and Nintendo will go back to that in a future console if there is a reason to.

GameShare is a nice idea but the fact that only 6 Games are currently compatible with it massively tempers my interest/expectations. Sure, you can also randomly share a low res video of your single player games with people without letting them interact with it, but why? I'm sure some people will enjoy that lesser aspect, but I don't totally understand the use-case personally.

Just GameChat itself I could definitely see Nintendo keeping for all future consoles because, like the additional power of Switch 2, it lets them more or less catch up with the other consoles.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (17th May)

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have mostly been dabbling in some smaller games:

  • Be Brave, Barb - The latest game by the developer of Dadish. You are a cactus going through therapy. This game is more of a puzzle platformer than others by this dev and your only control is jump β€” it's basically an auto-walker but you walk sideways and upside down as well and keep walking along whatever you run into until you jump β€” you could jump over an enemy or onto a different floating island or accidentally fling yourself off into space. Fun so far.
  • Squab - Cute cheap little precision platformer where you are a pigeon. It took less than an hour to 100% so I can't say I would recommend it but it was still kind of satisfying.
  • Picross LogiartGrimoire - My all-time favorite Picross game now has DLC so I snagged it. I'm trying no assists for now but the DLC goes up to the dreaded 40x30 so we'll see if I stay the course or not.
  • Catmaze - absolutely charming metroidvania which hadn't been on my radar until I ran into a review recently and noticed a deep sale. You are a young witch looking for medicine for your mother. I just started but really liking it so far.
  • Tetris 99 - Continuing my streak of just a little bit of Tetris 99 every week.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (10th May)

Not a lot of game time this week or weekend because of work, so I'm only playing a little of games I can play in short sessions. Happy Gaming and week all.

  • Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons - 100% finished with everything, no assists used! I have a ton of hours on that game. It may end up as my most played of the year. Good Picross game; 8/10.
  • Picross S7 - Started as my next Picross game. I'm not great at the mega puzzles with the weird multi-row rules.
  • Tempopo - Since I've been busy I only played one level this week πŸ˜… Still a cute game though.
  • Tetris 99 - Just a couple online matches this week.
  • Super Mario Maker 2 - Also only one level this week πŸ˜† I got on just to play one level by a followed creator.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects (April 2025)

FishyS

Definitely a slow month while waiting patiently for Switch 2. I tried the demo for Rusty Rabbit but it didn't click with me. I Robot looks cool but I think the graphics would explode my brain πŸ˜…

I bought a couple April eShop games and by far the best was Tempopo, a rhythm puzzle platformer with a tiny pinch of Captain Toad vibes. The Switch metacritic score of the game is sitting high at 89 though not many venues chose to review it; I'm curious what NL would have rated it as.

@sketchturner Is Cato good? I saw that on the eShop yesterday and was tempted to wishlist it.

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:

  • Hello Kitty Island Adventure - Doing some friendship farming while waiting for the big update later this month.
  • PokΓ©mon Trading Card Game (NSO) - I've never played any Pokemon trading card game so I decided to try the OG Gameboy one. I generally dislike deck builder games and I can't say I particularly like this game either, but I'm still glad I'm trying it just for the experience.
  • Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons - 270/270 main puzzles done and finished the first 60x45 collage puzzle.
  • Tempopo - Very slowly playing this musical puzzle platformer with an occasional level here and there.
  • Tetris 99 - Mostly playing one online competitive match a day.
  • Infinity Nikki - Not Switch, but I went back to this game after a big recent update. They completely retcon-ed the plot and lore of the game which is kind of crazy in the middle of an ongoing RPG. I don't play much anymore because I don't have a great device to play on but it's still a lovely game; I hope it comes to Switch 2.

Re: ICYMI: 12 Switch Games Will Receive Free Switch 2 Upgrades

FishyS

Most of these are obviously for graphical updates or adding mouse mode but... what does New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe need?

I'm sad Peach Showtime isn't on the list. Stunning game but with a lot of loading issues and occasionally performance snafus.

@somnambulance The 'find the stamp' thing could definitely use mouse mode.

Edit: I just noticed I own all but one of these games; that's kind of surprising considering there are a lot of Nintendo games I don't own and some of these are minor ones.

Re: Switch eShop Update Puts Less Focus On The Terrible 'eSlop'

FishyS

The Charts section has always felt a little pointless to me; I've probably only looked at it a few times in 8 years. The offers/deals section change is good, but as well as hiding some of the worst games, I really wish they would add more discoverability to good smaller games as well as more customization to what we see (e.g. removing or highlighting chosen publishers).

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:

  • Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons - 270/270 main puzzles completed. Woohoo! No hints used for any of them. Now to start the crazy collage puzzles.
  • Tempopo - Charming little musical puzzle platformer I've wanted for a while. Not exactly deep so far but super cute.
  • Donkey Kong '94 (NSO) - My next NSO game now that I've finished donkey kong country 3 SNES. It will be interesting to see the origin of Mario vs DK games.
  • Super Mario Maker 2 - After one of my longest gaps not playing since 2019, I decided to dip back in for some levels by creators I follow and some endless.
  • Tetris 99 - Continuing my never ending recently self imposed task to unlock everything πŸ˜…

Re: Poll: GameStop Offers A Tempting Switch 2 Trade-In Deal, But Is It Really Worth It?

FishyS

Between the expensive new sd cards making it so I can't transfer all my games immediately, the fact that I need a way to charge my old joycons to use with Switch 2, and the fact that a bunch of Switch 1 games currently have issues working on Switch 2, I will definitely keep my Switch for at least a year or so.

I also suspect my beat up 2017 Switch won't be worth much when I do eventually try to sell it...

@dskatter @dskatter FYI, Nintendo's short list of 'games without cloud save' is inaccurate so you have to check game by game; I have a few (even some major ones such as dragon quest games) which don't show up on the list but don't have cloud save. Of course, the biggest games without cloud save are Pokemon.

Re: Community: 38 Switch Games We Missed, As Recommended By You

FishyS

I love these articles. I've found a lot of good games through them in the past. As well as the ones I submitted, it's really great to see Haiku the robot, Leo's Fortune and Bzzzt get some love; those are great games.

Of the ones here I haven't played, Tevi and Endling are already on my wishlist and Youropa is on my backlog. Woodle Tree I've wondered about before so it may go on my wishlist. Howl and Sanabi and Twilight monk all look neat and were not on my radar.

Re: Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Won't Make It Easy For Physical Collectors In Japan

FishyS

@Kestrel Yep, not forever. Whether the servers shut down before or after the physical cartridges break is of course an open question though. No one knows how long Switch cartridges last, but the general assumption is they won't last as long as the old style e.g. snes carts. Ironically, because the game key cards don't store much information, they might last longer than full carts before they become too corrupted to play.

Re: Tired Of Pro Controller Charge Times? The Switch 2 Model Is A Huge Step Up

FishyS

I admit I have never noticed the Switch pro controller takes a long time to charge. I guess I just charge it over night when I need to.

@RupeeClock there are already a couple reviews floating around saying the new pro controller d-pad is much better.

@-wc- The fact they won't let the old controllers wake up Switch 2 is very annoying. Eventually I want a Switch 2 Pro Controller but they're a bit too expensive to get immediately.

Re: Mailbox: Switch 2 Price Drops, Remake Replacements, PokΓ©mon Acquisitions - Nintendo Life Letters

FishyS

The letter about remakes was fun. I think one difference about game remakes versus e.g. movie remakes, is that the old version is often just not accessible to a new generation of players who don't want to go out of their way to buy old expensive hardware. Link's Awakening is an exception because it's on NSO, but often remakes are the only way a new generation will see a game. In that sense, I'm all for them even if they change the original in some ways.

Re: Opinion: It's Time To Get Rid Of Fall Damage

FishyS

I'm kind of indifferent about fall damage. It's fun to be able to leap off tall things but it's also fun to be able to climb up tall things and have it be dangerous. I also like how Zelda Echoes does it in the Still World with agonizing screams so the player takes psychological fall damage rather than the character taking damage which gives a different type of deterrent to falling.

I think the variety is good from game to game. And I would much prefer fall damage to weapon breakage.

Also, Kirby already does take fall damage if the pit is deep enough.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (19th April)

Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:

  • Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (NSO) - Hoping to finish up the main game today. Although I've collected most of the secrets I'm probably not going to go for 100%.
  • Hello Kitty Island Adventure - Haven't played for a while just because I've been busy and the game sucks me into long play sessions but I'm at minimum going to finally do the multiplayer quest this weekend.
  • Pankapu - a pretty and relaxing 2D Platformer which has been on my backlog for a long time.
  • Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons - 263/270 main puzzles completed. Only fairly hard levels left so the home stretch may take awhile.
  • Tetris 99 - continuing my random urge to unlock all the themes. I've now finished unlocking all the special themes but have a ton of standard 15 point themes to unlock so this will take months more if I keep at it πŸ˜
