Still a great game 6 years in. I realize Maximus Cups are effectively just one way Nintendo advertises new games, but I really enjoy them so I am glad they continue to exist.
Tetris 99 is my 7th most played game on Switch; I mostly only play during Cups, but even that adds up over 50 events.
Shovel Knight Dig - I keep falling off this game. It's kind of fun but I'm not sure if I will have the patience to beat it. But I do a run occasionally.
@Elektrogeist1287 They are arguably pandering by adding a hard mode. Apparently you are one of the people being pandered to, so enjoy your option and others can enjoy theirs.
I'll get the new Picross games eventually but I have a long Picross backlog right now so I'll probably wait for a sale.
It's interesting that Roller Katz BF: Episode 1 is re-releasing after being previously pulled off the eShop. I own the original on Switch but the new version apparently isn't offering rebates (or free-bates) for people who own the original. As far as I can tell, it is the same exact game but less scuffed.
Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration - Grabbed this on a good sale. I'm just starting the documentary part so it may be awhile before I delve into the games.
@SirLink I think the reviews of Bananza are good because.. it's an extremely good game. One of the most creative and pure fun games I personally have played in the last few years. I don't think reviews are generally especially biased towards Nintendo - Mario Kart World got good but not excellent reviews and 2 Nintendo games were amongst the worst reviewed games of the year.
Regardless, Bananza has basically no chance to win GotY. Not always, but Game Awards tend to tilt a bit towards Western games and against family-friendly games
@Aswannsong I believe Kirby has sold more than F-Zero, Metroid, Pikmin and Kid Icarus combined. Plus Kirby plushies are quite popular. Sure, Kirby is no Mario or Zelda or Pokemon, but it's still one of Nintendo's most popular franchises. The players on this website have scored quite a few Kirby games as above 8/10 so I wouldn't call it a '7/10 franchise'.
@SirLink Why shouldn't Bananza be in the list? It got better reviews than Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Death Stranding which are also in the list and has the same metacritic score as Silksong. For the most part, the contenders are just the games which got good reviews and Bananza was in the top 5 for the year review-wise.
Personally I think both the extremely good reviews and the GotY nomination are very deserved.
@eaglebob345 Yeah, I feel like Split Fiction got the short end of the stick. It reviewed very well and was fairly popular but I guess it just didn't have as much 'hype' as the other games.
@AlonditeFE I was surprised Bananza wasn't in action adventure. They often plop Nintendo games like Zelda in that category and leave 'action' for the more violent or fast-paced action games.
@TheBigK Although I agree they like to throw Nintendo a bone, Bananza is one of the best reviewed games of the year (Number 5 on metacritic) so it makes sense to be on the list.
@UpsideDownRowlet I feel like Deltarune should have been in the 'best ongoing game' category but that category is kind of non-creative - it includes Final Fantasy 14 and Fortnite every single year.
The ordering of Zelda games is always kind of funny when 2/3rds of them were extremely well received. I'm planning to get the new Hyrule Warriors later; sounds very good for a spinoff.
@Morsel That actually is a pretty fascinating combination of two games to play.
I was looking down the poll in this article yesterday and it's impressive how many very different but good games make the list. Over 200 games only got a single vote. I'm happy to always see Hello Kitty in the 3-4 vote range though.
@CaleBoi25 My point was that the phrase has a valid grammatically correct meaning. Instead of assuming people are bad at grammar, just troll them by assuming they mean the phrase literally 😝. It's just a passive-aggressive way to teach grammar without the other person realizing it. 😆
I have no conscious memory of when 'releases' started being used. If you had asked me before I read this article, I would have assumed that it had always been used. Now I kind of want to know the history.
What's wrong with the phrase 'I could care less?' Just assume people mean it literally; the person currently cares a certain amount and is capable of caring less than that amount.
Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:
Hello Kitty Island Adventure - I caved in and got the Switch 2 edition upgrade for $10. The game looked sharper for a few minutes but then my brain adjusted and I can no longer tell the difference. 😝 Not worth the upgrade, but oh well.
Kirby's Dream Buffet - The recent Nintendo Music release reminded me that I hadn't unlocked everything in this game so I have been playing again. Such a fun little game. I wish multiplayer was active, but it's still fun to play around against the bots now and then.
KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series - The recent Switch 2 OS update finally fixed this game! I'm restarting the first game in the collection. It looks really good on Switch 2 now that it doesn't instantly crash!
NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition - I got this game for a few dollars earlier this year and was waiting for it to be fixed on Switch 2 to play it. I decided to just start. If it breaks I'll swap to Switch 1 😅
I haven't used the ethernet port but I was having a lot of problems with the electrical/usb port for the first month or so and it was a common enough issue that Nintendo made a help page about it and offered to replace the dock. So a similar dock issue.
@rjejr It's mostly the same game but no city and there aren't in-app purchases. As far as I know, no item is truly limited because we can still get all the previous event items during new events. Some quests are definitely 'come back a day later' but it doesn't realy feel like a mobile game to me - I typically play between 30 and 90 minutes at a time and I skip some days since things are stored for several days so you don't really miss out on anything by skipping a couple days. The platforming and racing feels good with an actual controller as opposed to touch screen. And the game is quite pretty and expansive on a big screen, especially the new DLC map.
I also caved in and bought it. Mainly as an experiment to see what Switch 2 can do.The visuals are sharper which was briefly interesting but overall not worth $10.
Most of my games are supported and some of them have almost magical improvements on Switch 2. I do have games which aren't supported also and at least one of them isn't supprted even though Nintendo says it is supported which is a bit annoying — Nintendo support kind of just shrugged at their own error and didn't fix the database after I spoke to them .
I wouldn't mind more apps (YouTube, Crunchyroll) but I also don't care too much.
So, overall, I'm mostly happy even if there are a few annoyances.
Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I have been playing:
Kirby Air Riders - Playing the demo. I am not a huge fan of the chaotic city trial but the normal races seem decent and some of the mini games are fun. The tutorial had a bizarre and annoying bug for me but I assume that will be fixed by the time the game releases. I haven't decided whether I want to buy the game or not. For now I'll try more of the demo.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure - Waiting for a couple visitors to come and searching for a few missing collectables.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A - Doing the ranked battles. I kinda dislike the free-for-all format of these battles, but I want the prizes 😆
Super Mario Maker 2 - The new Nintendo Store app which includes daily playtime tells me I have played this game on 546 separate days 😅 It's been a few weeks, so I just felt like playing a few levels today.
I have quite a few of these on my wishlist but haven't managed to play any of them yet — the expensive Switch 2 games are taking too much of my time and money 😝
Happy weekend and gaming everyone. Not a ton of game time but I have been playing a bit of:
Mad Father - My Halloween game. An RPG Maker type game where you are a little girl in a mansion. The use of sound effects makes it remarkably horrifying in parts. Also, quite gruesome - I just keep dying horribly 😅
Hello Kitty Island Adventure - I mostly finished the DLC now and also finished the main flower quests. It's Hello Kitty's birthday so I'll play whatever the event is for that.
@Ramouz There is a huge free update coming in a couple months.
@Morsel @slowpoke_tail I have almost burned out several times but the update cadence has somehow worked perfectly for me. I originally thought I would be done after 30 hours. For a while I was only playing once a week (the game is much more forgiving than animal crossing in that way) but then I got Switch 2 and the game suddenly ran so well that it felt like a new game. Another time I thought I was out of things to do but I suddenly unlocked a ton of new quests. Then I was almost out of things to do for real and the huge DLC came out. It's weirdly addictive while also not being addictive.
I felt really happy watching the overview video and thinking how much I would have enjoyed the Hotel and Slumber Island... if this were 3-4 years ago. But I'm not sure if I will actually play it nowadays after being done with the game for so long.
The collabs are interesting and fitting since the game already has Mario stuff, although tying some of them to amiibos was an odd chose.
Nothing in the Switch 2 version particularly called out to me except the megaphone which is an adorable concept.
It's odd that all the good updates are in the free part - not really sure why they even bothered charging for the Switch 2 edition.
Some of the free updates are things I would have absolutely loved several years ago but I'm not sure if I can really get back into the game now after 600 hours of play and then a 3 year break. I may just continue to impatiently wait for a new animal crossing and not really bother with the update.
The nostalgia bias is overwhelming for Pokemon. Maybe in 30 years everyone will say Pokemon Z-A is one of the best Pokemon ever and gen 16-18 are awful.
Personally for me... it's never been an amazing series but it's always been a fun and cute series.
@LazyDaisy I suspect the main goal of patching this is so that the 9 million people who own the collection are reminded that they own Galaxy 1 and should go buy Galaxy 2.
@Pillowpants Considering Z-A sold 6 million in a few days even though the better version of the game is both $70 and on a console not many people own yet and even though it's not the main game of the generation, I think it's fair to say the Pokemon Company will not be seeing diminishing returns. I expect the Switch 2 Z-A bundle will sell like fire this holiday season also.
@ShadLink I'm not sure where I would rank Z-A yet, but Arceus is number 1 for me also.
Happy weekend and gaming everyone. This week I am playing:
Pokémon Legends: Z-A - I haven't actually had a chance to play all week but I will have a few hours to play this weekend so I should have a chance to proceed in the main campaign. First goal is to fight some more bosses. And then maybe buy some new clothes.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure - Trying to get my DLC friend to max friendship. Also playing to get the current event items.
Probably 8/10? I'm not done yet so it is possible that will change, but it's 8 at the moment. I am really enjoying the atmosphere of the game and even though the region is small, exploring and fighting in parks and platforming around roofs are all quite fun. And I love the clothing options after the S/V school uniforms.
I don't like the combat as much as in Arceus (in theory there is potential for lots of strategy but with the annoying timers counting down in practice I am much less strategic than I am in a normal Pokemon game) and the boss fights are not my favorite. The night time fight club thing is more fun than I thought it would be though.
I personally quite like the art style, not sure why people complain about it. And the soundtrack is catchy.
I could take or leave the megas.
Overall, quite enjoying the game although I am not in as love with it as I was Arceus (which I gave 9/10).
