Twilight Princess, but a Bluepoint (RIP) style of remake. Redo the visuals to take proper advantage of Switch 2 horsepower, increase the frame rate and orchestrate the soundtrack.
Not releasing a new Animal Crossing on Switch 2 is just leaving money on the table. Pokopia is evidence of that. It’ll happen, same with Smash. We’re in a weird position where Nintendo games have gotten so evergreen that the need for sequels (and discounts) to drive engagement just isn’t there.
I turned 30 on February 13th, incidentally the release of the Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition. First game I ever played, my mum, brother and I huddled on the couch as we explored the then science fiction that was the Gameboy Advance, all while it poured rain outside. I actually phoned her when the remaster was revealed.
Donkey Kong would still be on most people’s lists if you were to ask them to name 10 video game characters, I reckon. The character has a huge amount of brand recognition but not much brand identity. Decades spent padding out Mario rosters between releases will do that to you.
Look, I get the complaints, but it’s almost as if Pokémon is a highly bankable property and not some random Gameboy game from 1992. Of course they’re going to chance their arm on a priced release, separate from NSO. This franchise has been coasting on the bare minimum for years because people keep buying. Nothing about this release is tone deaf or baffling. It’s completely keeping on with the precedent that’s been set.
I bounced hard off DQIII last year but I’m really enjoying VII. The presentation is stunning and the gameplay might as well be JRPG comfort food at this stage.
Probably not. The original has a bizarre place in my heart. I brought it on an inter-railing trip with me and my friends got really engrossed in the oddness of it, passing the 3DS around during long train rides and creating abominable Mii families. A case of right place, right time. I think I’ve just moved on since.
Mario Kart is the video game equivalent of a board game or a deck of cards. You just have one at the ready on the off chance you have company or need to amuse yourself.
I did not click with III at all so I’ll probably pass on this. A loving update but clearly not for me, challenge wise. NES gamers were built different, I tell you.
@Serpenterror haven’t most of Nintendo’s games over the last decade been developed by a younger generation, with the old guard more or less in consulting roles?
The performance issues were chronic and ruined the game for me. Not unplayable but severely unenjoyable. I’m curious to see how much of an improvement the patch brings.
I’m going to limit my praise for Ubisoft as they do pretty much encapsulate everything wrong with the gaming industry, but participating in a fan event as a means of directly reaching out and saying, “We hear you,” is pretty cool.
The original Rayman is the first game I ever played. It’s an important series to me.
It’s hilarious to me that Bubsy is so infamous as to stay in the conversation all this time.
I also think an ironic nostalgic revival, where the thing being revived is only remembered for being crap and the devs are aware of it, is kind of a brilliant premise. A sort of satire on reboot culture.
I’m looking forward to this. Based on the trailer, the gameplay looks solid and an aged up Bubsy actually makes for some funny dialogue. If it’s priced appropriately and the reviews don’t hate it, I’m in.
Got another Nintendo all timer on our hands here. Haven’t marvelled at a game with childlike wonder in a very long time. I love that it’s pulling from all corners of the Kongverse, from Rare to the arcade games, as well as being a new direction for the series that’s natural as it is jaw dropping. If DK gets demoted to Mario spin off character for another 10 years after this, I’ll go - wait for it - bananas.
The glory days of Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled were some of my fondest gaming memories. Crash fans basking in the comeback and seeing the devs lovingly reintroduce forgotten characters in post launch updates. 10 million is a well earned figure but it sadly seems Crash is back on the shelf at Activision.
@John_Deacon for what it’s worth, I put in close to 300 hours in Street Fighter 6 and did not spent a cent on additional content. This isn’t the case of Street Fighter 5 where the base game was barely a game and the rest came later.
I’ll be the first to arch a brow when people get outraged over what is a luxury hobby but equally, what did he think antagonising his consumer base was going to accomplish? At least Nintendo knows to keep its mouth shut until absolutely necessary.
Donkey Kong’s appearance hasn’t been meaningfully updated in 30 years. Any attempt to tweak the design is going to seem stark compared to characters that have been regularly iterated upon. Personally, I think the Rare design was beginning to show its age and a refresh was needed.
@8bitKirby obviously there is a single player audience that Nintendo will cater for. Donkey Kong is around the corner and Metroid Prime 4 is not far off either. 3rd parties are also bringing the goods at launch. These games don’t magically disappear because a multiplayer game is in the limelight.
Mario Kart is a Nintendo tentpole. 8 Deluxe has consistently been a top seller for 8 years now, nearing GTA V levels of evergreen. A brand new entry at launch is critical to kickstart the Switch 2.
The fact that Cyberpunk melted PS4s and Xbox Ones back in 2020 should also be a positive indication of the Switch 2’s processing muscle. As it is now, it’s an absolutely brilliant experience and an easy recommendation for those yet to jump in.

Great game, deserves its success.

@mattesdude critical success, I mean.
Re: "It's Truly Baffling" - Shigeru Miyamoto Comments On The Mario Galaxy Movie's Critical Reception
Miyamoto is learning the hard way that success in one medium does not automatically entitle you to success in another.
Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Would You Most Like To See Remade?
Twilight Princess, but a Bluepoint (RIP) style of remake. Redo the visuals to take proper advantage of Switch 2 horsepower, increase the frame rate and orchestrate the soundtrack.
Re: Miyamoto Expected "Significant Resistance Internally" To Fox In The Mario Galaxy Movie
The reports of this movie being an incomprehensible horror show of overstimulation has me so morbidly curious to see it lol.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
I feel like the reveal of Fox had us all genuinely hoodwinked for a moment that this was going to rise any higher than mediocre.

Wonderful write up. Happy Mother’s Day.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Tired Of The Talking Flower Yet?
I think they’re great but they need a variety of voice actors, not the overly corporate and sanitised Nintendo Direct voice over.
Re: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Introduces The Voices Of Yoshi, Wart, And The Honey Queen
The Super Mario Bros 2 characters are a welcome surprise. Hopefully the move isn’t too overstuffed.

Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Meet The Team
Oh my god these comments. If the game is bad, it’s not going to be because of the extra characters.
Re: Official Zelda Movie Photos Give Us Our Best Look Yet At Link And Zelda
Ah, a classic Miyamoto hostage tweet. Film looks good. Obviously a few pics aren’t enough to go off but the actors are on point in my opinion.
Re: Poll: What Do You Make Of The Mario Galaxy Movie's Leaked Yoshi Design?
It seems like this discourse happens every single time a character’s design is moderately tweaked. The DK Bananza fiasco feels like it was yesterday
